Every parent comparing London sixth forms is handed one progress number per school, covering every A level it enters. The Department for Education also publishes a second number almost nobody quotes: a value-added score for Chemistry alone, with a confidence interval, institution by institution. It exists for 428 institutions across London in 2024/25, and at three of the five providers checked here it disagrees with the headline figure.

Which A-Level Chemistry Score Does the DfE Actually Publish for Your Child's London Sixth Form?
Two different measures sit in the Department for Education's 2024/25 release and they answer different questions. The first is the whole-cohort A-level progress score shown on every institution's page on the Compare School and College Performance service: one number covering every A level that provider enters, from Art to Further Maths. The second lives in the DfE's Schools and colleges — qualification and subject value added file, and it is reported per subject. Ask it for GCE A level Chemistry and it returns, for each institution, a number of entries in the measure, a value-added score, and a lower and upper confidence interval.
Five London institutions were checked for this page, one in each of five boroughs, and each was verified as Open at the DfE's Get Information about Schools register by Unique Reference Number on 19 September 2026 rather than assumed to be trading. They are deliberately five different kinds of provider: a Roman Catholic sixth-form college, a free school sixth form, a selective grammar school, an independent school and a non-selective academy.

Read across a row and the two right-hand columns are not restatements of each other. St Paul's School posts the highest Chemistry value added of any London institution with 50 or more entries in the measure, +0.64, well clear of its own whole-cohort +0.36. Mossbourne Community Academy's whole-cohort score is −0.1; its Chemistry score is −0.61, six times larger and jointly the lowest in London among institutions of that size, alongside The Coopers' Company and Coborn School in Havering. And St Dominic's Sixth Form College is banded below average overall on −0.06 while its Chemistry score is a fractionally positive +0.02 on an interval that straddles zero.
Why Does The Latymer School Score −0.27 in Chemistry and +0.08 in Biology?
The Latymer School in Edmonton is the clearest case on this page, and it is a single school in a single year. Its whole-cohort A-level progress score is −0.03, confidence interval −0.11 to +0.05, banded Average because that interval spans zero. Its A-level Chemistry value added, from the same 2024/25 release, is −0.27 with an interval of −0.49 to −0.06 — entirely below zero. Its A-level Biology value added, in the same file, is +0.08, interval −0.16 to +0.32, spanning zero in the other direction.
A parent reading only the headline number sees Average and learns nothing about either. The confidence intervals are what make the contrast real rather than noise: Chemistry's sits wholly on one side of zero, Biology's does not, so the two are not simply a high and a low draw from the same distribution. This is a selective school whose whole-cohort average result is A−, 47.33 points, well above the England figure of B− at 36.1 — a reminder that raw grades describe who a school admits, and value added describes what happened afterwards.
The same split appears elsewhere with different sizes. St Dominic's Sixth Form College enters 226 students for A-level Chemistry and 220 for Biology, two departments of almost identical size, and its Chemistry score of +0.02 sits against Biology's −0.14. At Mossbourne Community Academy the three sciences point in three directions: Chemistry −0.61, Biology −0.32, Physics +0.18, though the Physics interval spans zero and should not be read as above average.
It would be easy to present this as a rule that Chemistry always diverges. It is not one. At London Academy of Excellence Tottenham the two sciences agree: Chemistry +0.22 with an interval clear of zero, Biology +0.17 with an interval that just touches it. The honest summary is that a subject score and a whole-cohort score are different questions, and on the five providers here they gave different answers at three of them.

Why Do Two London Sixth Forms Enter Chemistry and Biology With Different Exam Boards?
Knowing the board is not the same as knowing the course, and two of the five providers here publish enough to show why. The Latymer School's own Chemistry department page states that at GCSE “The Chemistry department follows the AQA Specification” and then, for the sixth form, “We follow the Edexcel specification”. Its Biology department page says something different again: “Our curriculum is based on the AQA A Level biology syllabus 7041/2”. So a Latymer student taking both sciences sits two awarding bodies at A level, and the one that changes board between GCSE and A level is Chemistry.
London Academy of Excellence Tottenham publishes its boards subject by subject on one curriculum page, and the same split appears: Chemistry is entered with OCR A H432, Biology with AQA. The page also describes the Chemistry papers — Paper 3 is named as “Unified Chemistry”, covering the entirety of the course — which is the OCR A paper structure, so the course can be identified from its module names and not only from the label.
The same test works at Latymer. Its published Year 12 and Year 13 topic lists run Redox I and Redox II, Energetics I and Energetics II, Kinetics I and Kinetics II, Organic chemistry I, II and III, and Modern analytical techniques I and II. That roman-numeral pairing is the Pearson Edexcel A-level Chemistry topic structure, 9CH0. It is worth checking, because two providers can both name OCR and still be teaching different courses: OCR's Chemistry A and its Chemistry B (Salters) are separate specifications with separate papers, and a tutor working from the wrong one is working from the wrong past papers. Does Your Child's Chemistry Specification Set 12 Practicals or 16?
The Department for Education's subject content for A-level science sets a floor: students “will be required to have carried out a minimum of 12 practical activities, which will contribute towards the Practical Endorsement”. For chemistry it also lists what those activities must cover — titration using burette and pipette, distillation and heating under reflux, purifying a solid product by recrystallisation, thin-layer or paper chromatography, setting up electrochemical cells and measuring voltages, and measuring rates of reaction by at least two different methods.
Boards are free to exceed that floor, and they do not agree. AQA's A-level Chemistry specification, 7405, numbers its required practical activities one to twelve, ending with the separation of species by thin-layer chromatography, and tells teachers that “A rich practical experience for students will include more than the 12 required practical activities”. Pearson Edexcel's 9CH0 sets sixteen: “The 16 core practicals will provide the basis from which some of the Paper 3 examination questions will be drawn”, with the specification noting separately that evidence for the endorsement must cover the twelve techniques through a minimum of twelve of them.
Four practicals is not a trivial difference over two years, and it is decided by which specification a sixth form entered rather than by the subject. A Latymer student on Edexcel carries sixteen; a student at an AQA centre carries twelve; both clear the same regulatory minimum. There is a further rule worth knowing before results day, in Ofqual's conditions for science: where a student is not awarded a grade A* to E in the written papers, an awarding organisation “must ensure that no certificate is issued in respect of that Learner's practical science assessment, regardless of the result for that assessment”. The practical work does not stand alone on the certificate.

Why Does Chemistry Ask a Higher GCSE Maths Grade Than Biology at One London College and Not Another?
There is a regulatory reason a sixth form might set a higher maths bar for Chemistry than for Biology. The DfE's subject content states that “The assessment of quantitative skills will include at least 10% level 2 or above mathematical skills for biology and psychology, 20% for chemistry and 40% for physics”. Chemistry papers are required to carry twice the mathematical demand of biology papers.
Whether a given London provider acts on that is a separate question, and the two that publish subject-level bars answer it differently. St Dominic's Sixth Form College sets out its requirements course by course: A-level Chemistry needs grade 7 in GCSE Maths, grade 7 in GCSE Chemistry and 7,7 in Combined Science, while A-level Biology needs grade 6 in Maths and 7,6 in Combined Science. Chemistry is the only science at that college asking for 7,7 rather than 7,6. Its general bar — “at least 7 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including, English Language and Mathematics” — is a college-wide floor and not a Chemistry requirement.
London Academy of Excellence Tottenham sets grade 7 in Mathematics for Chemistry and grade 7 in Maths for Biology: the same bar. Its difference falls elsewhere, because its Biology criteria also require a 7 in English Literature or English Language and its Chemistry criteria do not. So within one city the Chemistry-versus-Biology entry gap runs in two directions, and there is no London-wide rule to quote. The only reliable answer is the one your child's target sixth form publishes.
A third route is not a grade at all. The Latymer School requires grade 7 in each subject a student intends to take and at least six grade 7s overall, plus, for applicants to Maths, Biology, Chemistry or Physics, a written test: “The total test time is 72 minutes”, designed, the school says, to emphasise rational thinking rather than revision. Where in London Is an A in Chemistry Most and Least Common?
A citywide Chemistry figure for London does exist, but only at one geography. The DfE's 16-18 results tables carry a London regional row, E12000007 — not a local authority row, which is why a page about GCSE results correctly says London has none. In 2024/25 that regional row records 10,193 students who completed A-level Chemistry during 16-18 study, of whom 30.58% were awarded A* or A, the DfE's own cumulative figure rather than two rounded numbers added together. 816 students, 8.005%, took an A*.
That single number hides a very wide city. Pulling all 33 local-authority rows inside the region and adding them gives exactly 10,193 — this page's own arithmetic, shown so the denominator is checkable: every student in the citywide figure sits in one of the 32 boroughs or the City of London, with none double-counted and none missing. The spread between those rows is the finding.

Sutton at 55.09% and Tower Hamlets at 10.45% are both real boroughs with real Chemistry cohorts of several hundred students, and they are more than five times apart on the same measure in the same year. Barnet enters the most students of any London authority at 851; Islington the fewest above zero at 92. A tutor or a parent quoting “London” at 30.58% is quoting a figure that describes almost none of these places accurately, which is why this page names the borough or the institution every time.

Is Chemistry the Biggest of the Three Sciences at a London Sixth Form?
Across the London region in 2024/25 the three sciences finish close together at the top and far apart at the bottom: Biology 10,340 students, Chemistry 10,193 and Physics 6,828. Chemistry finishes just behind Biology citywide and comfortably ahead of Physics. Its grade shape differs from both: Chemistry's A* share is 8.005%, the lowest of the three — Biology is 9.671% and Physics 12.566% — while its A*–A of 30.58% sits above Biology's 28.404% and below Physics's 34.285%. On this page's own subtraction, that means grade A alone accounts for 22.6% of the London Chemistry cohort against 18.7% in Biology: the A* is scarcer in Chemistry, and the A is more common.
At provider level the ordering flips. Chemistry entries exceed both Biology and Physics entries at all five institutions here: St Dominic's 226 Chemistry against 220 Biology and 93 Physics; London Academy of Excellence Tottenham 161 against 139 and 69; The Latymer School 112 against 74 and 61; Mossbourne 58 against 54 and 36.
St Paul's School is the fifth, and the one that shows why those counts need care: 76 A-level Chemistry entries, but 1 in Biology and 4 in Physics, and its Biology and Physics value-added rows are suppressed by the DfE. The subjects-entered table states that it “only includes qualifications approved for inclusion in attainment and progress performance measures”, so a low count there can mean a qualification outside that approved list rather than a small department. No source was found confirming which qualification the school enters for those two subjects, so this page reports the counts and does not explain them.

What matters more than the number is the confidence interval: The Latymer School's Chemistry interval of −0.49 to −0.06 lies entirely below zero, while its Biology interval of −0.16 to +0.32 spans it. An interval that crosses zero should not be read as a result in either direction.
