GCSE Business Studies Tutors in London: Who Actually Enters It

GCSE Business Studies carries no EBacc pillar, so nothing forces a school to run it. DfE's 2024/25 data shows Kingsbury High School in Brent entering 142 pupils -- 48.0% of its cohort -- while Michaela Community School, two miles away, enters nobody at all. GCSE Business Studies: an optional subject with no EBacc pillar

The EBacc consists of five pillars: English, maths, science, a language, and history or geography. Checked against DfE's own Secondary accountability measures guidance, the science pillar itself is satisfied only by combined science or by up to four single sciences -- biology, chemistry, physics and computer science -- and Business Studies is not named anywhere in that structure. Nothing pushes a school to timetable it and nothing pushes a pupil to choose it: it competes for space in the optional blocks alongside art, drama, a second language, sociology, and the vocational Technical Awards, against whatever a school decides its cohort should study once the EBacc core is filled.

That competition is about to matter less to how schools are judged, though not to what they teach. DfE's own Government response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review, published 5 November 2025, states plainly: "In advance, we will remove EBacc headline and additional measures at key stage 4. This will take effect for the key stage 4 performance measures for the 2025 to 2026 academic year to be published in autumn 2026." Read in full for this page, that document gives its own reasoning: "we believe the current structure has hampered progress in subjects which strengthen our economy and society including the arts, and therefore should make changes which recognise the value of these subjects and the importance of a broad pre-16 curriculum." Every EBacc figure used on this page is the 2024/25 measure -- the most recent year actually published -- and none of them is described as current or ongoing.

Does a school's EBacc entry rate predict its Business Studies numbers?

To some extent, on the 11 schools checked for this page -- but the direction is not a given, and this page tested it rather than assumed it. Computed directly on the 11 (full-EBacc %, Business Studies % of cohort) pairs sourced individually below, the correlation between full-EBacc entry and Business Studies entry across Brent and Hackney is negative: Pearson r = -0.58 (r = -0.69 with Claremont High School excluded as the clearest outlier). That is consistent with -- not proof of -- an EBacc-heavy option block leaving less room for Business Studies. With only 11 schools, a confound cannot be ruled out: schools differing in overall curriculum breadth, not specifically in an EBacc-versus-Business trade-off, could produce the same pattern, and this page does not claim to have identified a causal mechanism. Two Hackney academies illustrate the pattern at its strongest: Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy enters 98.7% of its cohort for the full EBacc and enters nobody for GCSE Business Studies; Michaela Community School in Brent, at 74.4% full-EBacc entry, also enters zero. Kingsbury High School and Queens Park Community School, at the opposite end with full-EBacc entry of 33.1% and 34.6%, run the two largest Business Studies cohorts on this page by share, at 48.0% and 52.1%.

Claremont High School in Brent is the clearest exception to that overall pattern: an 81.3% full-EBacc entry rate -- exactly double England's 40.5% state-funded average for 2024/25 -- sits alongside 46.3% of its cohort in GCSE Business Studies and a further 11.0% in GCSE Economics, a combined 57.4% doing one non-EBacc business subject or the other. A high EBacc rate and a large Business cohort are not mutually exclusive at every school; they depend on how many total option slots a school actually builds into its curriculum, not on the EBacc rate alone. A page checking a different city could plausibly find the opposite relationship, or none at all -- this page reports what Brent and Hackney's own 11 schools show, not a rule for every city.

What tracks Business Studies uptake more closely across all 11 schools checked here is the Languages pillar specifically, not the five-pillar headline figure. DfE's own national 2024/25 data records that of pupils entered for exactly four of the five EBacc components, 88.4% are missing Languages -- nationally, by far the most commonly dropped pillar. On this page's own sample, the three schools with the lowest Languages entry -- Queens Park Community School (34.6%), Kingsbury High School (41.2%) and Alperton Community School (44.4%) -- show the three highest Business Studies uptakes: 52.1%, 48.0% and 39.5% of cohort respectively. The three schools with the highest Languages entry -- Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy (98.7%), Mossbourne Community Academy (98.1%) and Michaela Community School (94.0%) -- show 0%, 25.7% and 0%. Claremont, again, is the exception: 81.3% Languages entry alongside 46.3% Business Studies, evidence that a bigger curriculum can accommodate both rather than trading one for the other.

Why doesn't London have one GCSE Business Studies figure?

London is not a local authority, so it carries no results row of its own in DfE's tables. London Councils, the umbrella body for London local government, describes itself as "the collective of London local government, the 32 boroughs and the City of London Corporation" -- and any figure that simply says "London" is really a named borough, a grouping of boroughs, or an England-wide average. Every figure on this page states which.

Rather than reconstruct a borough-wide average from all of London's schools, this page checks 11 named, individually verified state-funded secondary schools across two boroughs: Brent and Hackney. Which Brent and Hackney schools actually teach GCSE Business Studies?

Kingsbury High School, a non-selective academy in Brent with a 296-pupil cohort, enters 142 pupils for GCSE Business Studies -- 48.0% of the year group, the highest share on this page -- while running a below-average 33.1% full-EBacc entry rate against Brent's own 60.5% and England's 40.5%. Its Languages entry, 41.2%, is the specific pillar dragging that headline figure down, close to Brent's own average of 66.2% but well short of it. Preston Manor School, an all-through academy a short distance away, shows a similar shape: 131 Business Studies entries from a 250-pupil cohort (52.4%) against a 47.2% full-EBacc rate, with Languages at 66.4% -- almost exactly matching the Brent average, the single pillar propping up an otherwise middling EBacc figure.

Queens Park Community School's numbers show the clearest single-pillar constraint on this page: its full-EBacc entry rate, 34.6%, is identical to its own Languages entry rate, 34.6%, while its Humanities entry sits at 91.9% and its Science entry at 100.0%. Languages alone is the ceiling on this school's EBacc figure, and its Business Studies cohort -- 110 of 211 pupils, 52.1% -- is the second-highest share on this page. Alperton Community School follows the same pattern at a larger scale: 324 pupils, 128 in Business Studies (39.5%), full EBacc at 43.5% against a 44.4% Languages entry rate barely above it.

Claremont High School is the outlier that breaks any simple trade-off. Its 272-pupil cohort carries an 81.3% full-EBacc entry rate -- the highest on this page, more than double England's 40.5% -- yet 126 pupils (46.3%) still sit GCSE Business Studies and a further 30 (11.0%) sit GCSE Economics, a combined 57.4% of the cohort in one non-EBacc business subject or the other. Ark Elvin Academy sits at the opposite end of the Brent range: a 78.4% full-EBacc rate, close to Claremont's, but only 30 Business Studies entries from 199 pupils (15.1%) -- evidence that a high EBacc rate can coexist with either a large or a modest Business cohort, depending on how many total option slots the school's own curriculum design actually offers.

In Hackney, Mossbourne Community Academy (206 pupils) enters 53 for GCSE Business Studies, 25.7% of its cohort, against a 97.1% full-EBacc rate -- a school clearly capable of pushing entries hard across the core, still leaving room for a quarter of its pupils in Business. Stoke Newington School and Sixth Form, the borough's lowest full-EBacc entrant here at 28.7%, enters 55 of 254 pupils (21.7%) for Business Studies, with Languages entry at 40.9% the specific constraint on its EBacc figure, similar in shape to Queens Park and Alperton in Brent. Haggerston School enters 49 pupils for Business Studies (26.9% of 182) and a further 15 for Economics (8.2%), alongside a 74.7% full-EBacc rate -- a smaller-scale version of Claremont's pattern, both subjects running alongside a strong EBacc entry rather than instead of it.

What happens at the two schools that enter nobody at all?

Michaela Community School, a free school in Brent widely known for an unusually narrow, knowledge-focused curriculum, carries just 19 distinct subject rows on its entire DfE subjects-entered table -- checked line by line, none of them Business Studies, Economics, a BTEC Enterprise award or a Cambridge National in Enterprise and Marketing. Its 117-pupil cohort sits English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Religious Studies and Science: Double Award at 114-116 entries apiece -- essentially the whole year group -- alongside French at 110 and Geography or History for most of the rest. A 74.4% full-EBacc entry rate and a 94.0% Languages entry rate leave almost no room in the option block for anything outside that core, and Business Studies is one of the subjects that lost out entirely.

Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy in Hackney also enters zero for GCSE Business Studies, and zero for any vocational business or enterprise qualification -- but it is not a school with no vocational provision at all. Its own subjects-entered table carries two Technical Awards its option block does make room for: Hospitality/Catering Studies (10 entries) and Sports Studies (12 entries). At a 98.7% full-EBacc entry rate -- the highest of the 11 schools checked here -- and a matching 98.7% Languages entry rate, this school's option block is almost entirely consumed by the EBacc core, and what little room remains went to catering and sport, not business. A school with no GCSE Business entries and no vocational business alternative is not automatically a school that ignores vocational education altogether; it may simply have chosen a different vocational subject for the handful of slots it had left.

Which exam board, and is GCSE Business Studies assessed by coursework?

DfE's published performance data does not record which exam board an individual school uses, so this varies school by school and none of the 11 schools on this page is attributed to a specific board here. Checked directly against each board's own specification page or PDF, 2 September 2026, all four current GCSE Business Studies specifications remain live with a single edition each -- no AQA-style dual-edition trap of the kind found on other GCSEs. AQA's specification carries code 8132, for first teaching in 2017. Pearson Edexcel's carries code 1BS0, first teaching from September 2017, first certification from 2019, with the specification at Issue 2 -- a content-clarification revision to paper timings, not a second competing edition. OCR's carries code J204, Ofqual qualification number 603/0295/1, also first taught from 2017. WJEC Eduqas's carries Ofqual qualification accreditation number 603/0305/0, teaching from 2017, first award 2019, and is explicitly not available to maintained schools and colleges in Wales -- an England-facing variant of the WJEC brand.

What is worth adding for a London parent comparing all four current boards: none carries a non-exam assessment component, but the papers are not built the same way. AQA and Pearson Edexcel each split their two papers 50%/50%, both lasting 1 hour 45 minutes. OCR's two components, J204/01 and J204/02, also split 50%/50%, but each lasts only 1 hour 30 minutes -- confirmed directly in OCR's own specification PDF, which states the qualification is "a linear qualification with 100% external assessment." WJEC Eduqas is the genuine outlier of the four: its two components do not split evenly at all -- Component 1, "Business Dynamics", runs 2 hours and carries 62.5% of the qualification, while Component 2, "Business Considerations", runs 1 hour 30 minutes for the remaining 37.5%.

What's the vocational alternative when a school skips the GCSE?

Two vocational qualifications occupy the same curriculum space as GCSE Business Studies for a school choosing not to run the academic route. Pearson's BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Enterprise, the current 2022 specification, carries Ofqual qualification number 603/7063/4 over 120 guided learning hours, and is graded Distinction* to Pass rather than 9 to 1. OCR's Level 1/Level 2 Cambridge National in Enterprise and Marketing, specification code J837, sits in the same space and is confirmed on OCR's own qualification page as "Included on KS4 tables in England." Neither counts as a science, language or humanities subject for any EBacc purpose, whatever a school's own marketing might imply.

Despite that, neither vocational qualification appears by name on any of the 11 schools checked for this page in 2024/25 -- including the two schools that enter zero for the GCSE. Michaela Community School's 19-row subjects-entered table carries no BTEC or Cambridge National row of any kind, in business or otherwise; Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy runs Technical Awards, but in catering and sport, not enterprise. On this small, specific sample, a school skipping GCSE Business Studies is at least as likely to run no business-adjacent qualification at all as it is to route pupils into a vocational enterprise alternative -- a pattern worth checking directly on a specific school's own DfE Compare page rather than assuming either way.
