A-level Chemistry entries for the 17 Oxford-area sixth forms and colleges that entered the subject in 2024/25, each provider's own published GCSE entry grade, and the specification each one teaches.
Seventeen Oxford-area sixth forms and colleges entered students for A-level Chemistry in 2024/25, 488 entries between them. The Cherwell School is the largest at 88, Oxford International College second at 81 and Magdalen College School third at 71.

But the number that decides whether your child can start the course at all is not on that list. It is the GCSE grade their sixth form asks for, and across these 17 providers it ranges from a grade 8 in the sciences down to five GCSEs at grade 4 — with only one naming a grade on its own Chemistry page, and one more naming the sciences as a group. The rest fold Chemistry into a general rule about “the subjects you intend to study”.
Which Oxford Sixth Forms State a Chemistry Grade, and Which Just Say “the Subjects You Intend to Study”?
Almost every sixth form in the city publishes an entry requirement of some kind. Very few publish one that names Chemistry. The distinction matters because a general rule and a subject rule behave differently in a borderline year: a student sitting on a 6 in Chemistry knows exactly where they stand under the first and has to ring the admissions office under the second.
The Swan School is the clearest case in Oxford, and as far as we can establish the only provider in the city that publishes a Chemistry-specific grade on a Chemistry-specific page. Its A-level Chemistry page states the requirement as “7 in GCSE Chemistry or 7-7 in GCSE Combined Science”, and names the specification in the same breath: “AQA A level Chemistry (7405)”. A Year 11 student can read that page and know, without contacting anyone, both the grade they need and the papers they will sit.
Most of the rest publish a general threshold that Chemistry then inherits. Headington School Oxford expects “Grade 7 or above in subjects they wish to take at A Level, or, for subjects not previously studied, a 7 in facilitating subjects” — so Chemistry requires a 7, but by inheritance rather than by name. Magdalen College School makes offers “conditional on achieving six A*, 8 or 9 grades at GCSE, including in the subjects the candidate intends to study for A Level”, which is a materially higher bar and again reaches Chemistry through the general clause. St Edward's School is the strictest of the three, requiring a grade 8 rather than a 7 in any science a candidate intends to continue; our Oxford 16+ tuition guide sets out that threshold and the wider sixth-form entry picture in full.
At the state providers the published bar is lower and the subject-level detail is deferred. Cheney School asks that “you must achieve at least 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 and above including Maths and English Literature or Language”, then adds that “You must also gain the individual entry requirements for your chosen options” — the Chemistry-specific figure sits in a subject guide rather than on the page. Oxford Spires Academy expects “At least five grade 5's with a minimum of grade 4 in both English and Maths” and states plainly that “each subject has its own specific entry criteria, the details of which can be found in the Sixth Form Course Guide”.
Three providers — The Cherwell School, Greyfriars Catholic School and The Oxford Academy — publish no Chemistry entry grade we could read on a public page at the time of writing; each routes sixth-form enquiries to an application portal or a downloadable guide instead. Activate Learning, which runs the City of Oxford College campus, publishes a general A-level threshold that our Oxford 16+ tuition guide sets out, but we could not read a Chemistry-specific figure on its own course pages. In none of these four cases are we treating silence as evidence of a low bar, or of any bar. It means a family shortlisting them should ask the admissions office directly rather than assume.

Which Specification Is Your Oxford Sixth Form Teaching, and Why Is “OCR” Not an Answer?
Two Oxford sixth forms can both tell you they enter Chemistry with OCR and still be teaching courses that share almost no content structure. OCR sets two separate A-level Chemistry specifications: Chemistry A, and Chemistry B, known as Salters. They are different courses with different module sequences, different papers and different past-paper banks. A student revising from the wrong one is revising the wrong subject.
Magdalen College School states its route outright on its own Chemistry page: “The pupils study the OCR A specification”, with the course “broadly split into Physical and Organic chemistry modules”. The Swan School, as above, names AQA 7405. Those are the two providers in the city that publish the answer plainly.
d'Overbroeck's does not name a board, but it does publish its module list, and that is enough to identify the course. Its Chemistry page states that “The first year consists of three modules: Foundations in Chemistry The Periodic Table and Energy Core Organic Chemistry”. Those are, word for word, modules 2, 3 and 4 of OCR Chemistry A, whose own specification summary reads “Module 2 - Foundations in chemistry Module 3 - Periodic table and energy Module 4 - Core organic chemistry”. OCR Chemistry B (Salters) organises the same subject into contexts instead — “Elements of life Developing fuels Elements from the sea The ozone story” — and shares not one module name with that list. This identification is ours, not the school's: d'Overbroeck's publishes the modules, OCR publishes the specifications, and the match between them is a deduction we have made and shown our working for, not a statement the school has issued.
That is the practical test for any Oxford sixth form that has not named its specification. Ask which board, then ask which specification within that board, then check the module names against the awarding body's own published list. Two questions, not one.
Why Does A-Level Chemistry Carry Twice the Maths of Biology and Half of Physics?
The difference is written into the assessment itself, and it is the single best explanation for why sixth forms treat the three sciences differently at the entry gate. AQA's own scheme of assessment sets the floor for each subject. For Chemistry: “20% of the overall assessment of A-level Chemistry will contain mathematical skills equivalent to Level 2 or above.” For Biology the equivalent line reads 10%, and for Physics 40%. Chemistry sits exactly in the middle, at double biology's mathematical load and half of physics'.
That ordering shows up in what schools ask for. At The Swan School, which publishes all three science requirements on comparable pages, the GCSE bar is the same grade 7 for Biology, Chemistry and Physics — but only the Physics page adds a co-requirement, stating that a student “must also study Mathematics at A Level”. Chemistry, at 20%, does not carry that condition at the same school; Physics, at 40%, does. The pattern is consistent with the assessment weightings rather than with anything about the schools.
It is worth being precise about what this does not explain. The practical endorsement — the separate pass or not-classified judgement reported alongside the A*-E grade — is often described as what makes chemistry distinctive. Numerically it is not. AQA's specifications set the same floor for all three: at least 15% of the overall assessment of A-level Chemistry, of A-level Biology and of A-level Physics tests knowledge and understanding of practical work in the written papers. Which Oxford Providers Enter Chemistry at AS Level as Well as A Level?
Four of the 17 entered students for AS-level Chemistry in 2024/25 alongside the full A level, 143 AS entries in total — and at two of them the AS cohort was the larger of the two.
Oxford International College entered 81 students for A-level Chemistry and 93 at AS, more at the one-year qualification than at the two-year one. Activate Learning shows the same shape: 25 at A level against 48 at AS. Cheney School and Oxford Spires Academy each entered a single AS candidate, which reads as an individual arrangement rather than a cohort. The remaining 13 providers entered nobody at AS.
For a family, the AS figure is a signal about intake rather than about teaching quality. A provider entering more students at AS than at A level is typically taking students in partway through the two-year programme — Year 12 joiners, transfers and retake candidates — rather than running a single cohort from September of Year 12 to June of Year 13. That changes what a student walking in at the start of Year 13 is walking into, and it is worth asking about directly.

No — and the answer is easy to get wrong, because the equivalent biology qualification is going and the two are often assumed to be the same decision.
OCR's own Chemistry B (Salters) page states: “We will withdraw the AS Level Chemistry B (Salters) (H033) qualification after the next academic year. The final first teach date will be September 2026. The final assessment opportunity will be June 2027.” The AS is named. The A level is not. A-level Chemistry B (Salters) does not appear anywhere on OCR's published register of qualification withdrawals.
Biology B is a different story. OCR's page for that subject states that “we will stop offering our AS Level and A Level Biology B (Advancing Biology) (H022/H422) qualifications”, with “The final assessment opportunity for A Level will be June 2028”. Both levels go. So a sixth form running Salters chemistry keeps its A level and loses only the AS route; a sixth form running Advancing Biology loses both, on a longer timetable.

Four awarding bodies offer A-level Chemistry in England: AQA, with specification 7405; OCR, with Chemistry A and Chemistry B (Salters); Pearson Edexcel; and WJEC's England-facing board Eduqas, whose A-level Chemistry carries the reference code A410QS. None of the A-level routes is closing. The practical consequence for an Oxford student is narrow but real: if your sixth form has been using the Salters AS as a staging post at the end of Year 12, that option ends with the June 2027 sitting, while the A level it leads into carries on unchanged.
What Happens to Chemistry at Oxford's Two International Baccalaureate Providers?
Two institutions in the city put students through a chemistry qualification that is not an A level at all, and the Department for Education records the two qualifications separately.
St Edward's School runs both side by side. In 2024/25 it entered 13 students for GCE A-level Chemistry, 11 for IB Chemistry at Higher Level and 4 at Standard Level. Its own Chemistry page confirms the arrangement: “In the Sixth Form pupils can choose to take Chemistry as an A Level or IB course.” Read the A-level figure alone and the school looks like a small chemistry centre; count all three and 28 students sat a chemistry qualification there that year. The school's grade 8 science requirement applies to both routes, since its published threshold covers subjects taken “at A Level or at Higher Level in the IB”.
St Clare's, Oxford is the cleaner case: it recorded no GCE A-level Chemistry entries at all in 2024/25, because it teaches the International Baccalaureate Diploma rather than A-levels. It entered 20 students for IB Chemistry at Higher Level and 17 at Standard Level. That is a substantial chemistry cohort by any measure, and none of it appears in an A-level comparison. A family that has shortlisted St Clare's for chemistry is choosing a different qualification, assessed differently and graded on a different scale — our IB tuition pages cover what that involves.
Is Every “Oxford” Sixth Form Actually in Oxford?
Not quite, and it is worth being explicit about which boundary this page is using. Oxford is a local authority district in its own right, with its own Office for National Statistics code, sitting inside the county of Oxfordshire. Sixteen of the 17 providers on this page are recorded in the Oxford district on the Department for Education's Get Information About Schools register.
The seventeenth is not. Matthew Arnold School, which entered 18 students for A-level Chemistry, is recorded on that register in the Vale of White Horse district, not Oxford. It is close to the city and carries an OX2 postcode, and it is a reasonable provider for an Oxford family to shortlist — but “within a few miles of the city centre” and “in the Oxford district” are two different tests, and a page that slides between them is telling a family something untrue about where a school sits. We have used proximity to the city as the inclusion test here and named the one provider where the two tests disagree.
One further point of hygiene, since several Oxford sixth forms have changed web address in the last two years: Headington School Oxford now publishes at headingtonschool.com, and Oxford Spires Academy's site has moved to its trust's domain. The Swan School and Cheney School are each reachable at a different address from the one older directories list. Every requirement quoted on this page was read on the current live host in September 2026, not on a cached or redirected one.
A note on the figures themselves. The entry counts here are Department for Education 16-to-18 results for the 2024/25 academic year, the most recent published. The DfE service that currently carries them is being retired and replaced from autumn 2026, so this page cites the data by year and source rather than pointing readers at a service that is closing. The 2024/25 figures remain the 2024/25 figures wherever they are subsequently published.

This differs from biology, where OCR is withdrawing both the AS and the A level in Biology B (Advancing Biology), the A level with a final assessment in June 2028.
How much mathematics is there in A-level Chemistry?
At least 20% of the overall assessment carries mathematical skills at Level 2 or above, according to AQA's own scheme of assessment.
