GCSE Chemistry and Combined Science Are Different Qualifications

A pupil can leave Year 11 having sat a GCSE in Chemistry, or having sat no Chemistry GCSE at all, because Combined Science — the double-award qualification a majority of pupils in England now take — produces two grades on a 17-point scale (9-9 down to 1-1) and never awards a standalone Chemistry grade. Ofqual's own explainer on the reformed science qualifications states that a pupil taking Combined Science "will study all three sciences and they'll cover roughly two thirds of the content of the single GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics." The Department for Education reports the two routes as separate rows in its own data: "Chemistry" for pupils entered for all three separate sciences as individual GCSEs, and "Science: Double Award" or "Combined Science" for the double-award route. Exam-board specification codes confirm the same split holds at board level: AQA's GCSE Chemistry is specification 8462, distinct from its GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy, specification 8464. OCR runs two separate Chemistry specifications of its own — Gateway Science Chemistry A, J248, and Twenty First Century Science Chemistry B, J258 — while Edexcel publishes its own equivalent GCSE Chemistry and Combined Science specifications under a different set of codes.

Nationally, the balance has been shifting toward Combined Science. FFT Education Datalab's analysis of the summer 2025 results, built on the figures JCQ and Ofqual published on results day, found that entries in the three separate sciences — biology, chemistry and physics together — fell by 6% year on year, while entries in double (Combined) science rose by 2%. Attainment moved the other way among pupils still sitting the separate route: more than 40% of triple-science entries nationally were graded 9-7 in 2025, with chemistry's own share of top grades up two percentage points on the year before, level with biology and one point ahead of physics. Both of those figures are national, not specific to Oxford or Oxfordshire — the next section shows what actually happens school by school across Oxford itself.

Which Oxford Secondary Schools Teach Separate GCSE Chemistry?

Oxfordshire enters proportionally more of its pupils for the separate sciences than England does as a whole. In the 2025 results, 36.0% of the 7,068 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 in Oxfordshire's state-funded schools were entered for biology, chemistry and physics together — DfE's own definition of the triple-science route — against 23.3% of pupils in England's state-funded schools (22.4% across all schools, state and independent). That is Oxfordshire's overall average; the picture at named Oxford schools is far more varied, and Chemistry's own entry count is usually the tightest of the three, as DfE's own subject-by-subject entry data for each school shows below.

At every school above except The Cherwell School, Chemistry supplies the lowest of the three separate-science entry counts: 191 against 194 Biology and 192 Physics entries at Matthew Arnold, 121 against 122 Biology entries at Cheney (level with Physics), and 61 against 69 Biology and 68 Physics entries at Oxford Spires Academy. Only at The Cherwell School does Physics fall lower still, by a single pupil — 161 Physics entries against 162 for both Biology and Chemistry. Because DfE's triple-science measure only counts pupils entered for all three sciences, a school's rate can never exceed its lowest individual subject count as a share of its cohort, which means Chemistry, not Biology, is usually what caps how high an Oxford school's own triple-science rate can go.

Matthew Arnold School, on Arnolds Way in west Oxford, recorded a 92.3% triple-science entry rate in the 2025 results — DfE's own published measure, not a figure derived from the entries table above, though here the two sit almost exactly together: 191 Chemistry entries over a 207-pupil cohort is 92.3% to one decimal place. The Cherwell School, on Marston Ferry Road, sits at 59.9%; Cheney School, in Headington, at 42.6%; and Oxford Spires Academy, in east Oxford, at just 28.4%, where 139 pupils took Combined Science against only 61 for separate Chemistry.

Why Does Chemistry Cap the Triple-Science Rate at Most Oxford Schools?

DfE's "entering for biology, chemistry & physics" measure counts only pupils who sat all three separate sciences, so a school's published rate can never be higher than its lowest individual subject count divided by its cohort — and at three of the four state-funded Oxford schools above, that upper bound sits almost exactly at the published figure. Matthew Arnold's 191 Chemistry entries against its 207-pupil cohort gives an upper bound of 92.3%, matching its published rate to one decimal place; Cheney's 121 Chemistry entries (tied with Physics) against 282 pupils gives an upper bound of 42.9%, against a published 42.6%; and Oxford Spires' 61 Chemistry entries against 215 pupils gives 28.4%, again matching exactly. At each of those three schools, in other words, nearly every pupil entered for Chemistry was also entered for Biology and Physics.

d'Overbroeck's, on Banbury Road, breaks that pattern and shows why the two figures are not the same measure. Its subject-entry table records 39 Chemistry entries against a 46-pupil Key Stage 4 cohort — an 84.8% upper bound, well above every state-funded Oxford school on this page. Yet DfE's own published triple-science rate for d'Overbroeck's is 71.7%, more than 13 percentage points below that ceiling. The gap means at least six of the school's 39 Chemistry pupils were not also entered for both Biology and Physics — proof that DfE's measure counts pupils entered for all three sciences individually, not simply whichever single subject has the fewest entries school-wide. A parent working out a triple-science rate from a school's own published entry counts, rather than from DfE's own percentage, would overstate d'Overbroeck's figure by a wide margin.

Does Combined Science Count Towards the EBacc and Attainment 8?

Choosing Combined Science over separate Chemistry does not, on its own, cost a pupil their English Baccalaureate science requirement. The EBacc is built from five pillars — English, maths, science, a language, and history or geography — and Combined Science's two GCSE-equivalent grades satisfy the science pillar exactly as fully as two of the three separate sciences would. There is no dedicated "science element" inside Attainment 8 in the way English and maths each get their own double-weighted slot: science, like the language and humanities pillars, competes for one of Attainment 8's three EBacc-qualifying slots rather than owning a slot outright.

Nationally, across the five EBacc pillars, DfE's own 2024/25 release records attainment as highest in English, then maths, then the sciences, then humanities, then languages — so a family choosing between Chemistry and Combined Science is not choosing between a "core" and a "lesser" science subject for EBacc purposes, only between two exam structures covering different amounts of content across biology, chemistry and physics.

One further measure is missing from every school and every local authority in England for the 2024/25 and 2025/26 results, Oxford's schools included: Progress 8. The Department for Education states plainly that progress measures will not be published for either year, because the pupils sitting GCSEs in that window had no Key Stage 2 assessment data after primary tests were cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic. No Oxford school, however strong its Attainment 8 or EBacc figures, can report a Progress 8 score for 2025.

Why Do Search Results for This Exact Term Miss the School Split Entirely?

The organic results actually ranking for "gcse chemistry tutors in oxford" are dominated by individual-tutor marketplaces, and every one of them treats GCSE Chemistry as a single undifferentiated subject. Superprof's Oxford chemistry page lists 469 individual tutors with no Oxford school named anywhere and no mention of Combined Science at all; several of its top-listed tutors describe themselves first as current University of Oxford students or medicine applicants, not as GCSE specialists — one an "Oxford biochemistry graduate (first class)," another a "3rd year medical student," a third a graduate with "a first class degree in MChem Chemistry" from the University of Oxford. Tutor Hunt's own Oxford chemistry directory is explicitly "ordered by proximity to Oxford town centre," yet its top-10 results include tutors based in Stadhampton (9.9 miles from the centre), Bicester (11.5 miles) and Grove (15.5 miles) — all listed among the "Oxford Chemistry Tutors."

Two of the remaining results are single sole-trader tutors rather than services built around Oxford's own schools. ChemHelp, run by Dr Ezi Williams, is a solo Chemistry tutor who taught for 12 years at St Paul's Girls' School in London before moving to Oxford in 2010; the page names no Oxford school and does not distinguish separate Chemistry from Combined Science anywhere. Cat The Science Tutor is run from Kidlington, just north of Oxford, by a tutor with a Masters in Chemistry from the University of Oxford; her page likewise carries no school-specific data. A further result illustrates a different failure mode entirely: the University of Oxford's own Department of Chemistry "college tutors" page — a staff directory of professors and heads of department, with no mention of GCSE anywhere — ranks for this exact search, the same university-versus-city confusion a parent searching for GCSE help does not want. None of the results distinguishes the two GCSE science qualifications, and none names which Oxford school teaches which.

DfE's Get Information about Schools register confirms d'Overbroeck's remains open. But its published triple-science rate, 71.7% from a 46-pupil cohort, sits well below what its own entry counts alone would suggest — a reminder that the qualification-split data above, from Matthew Arnold's 92.3% triple-science rate down to Oxford Spires' 28.4%, does not by itself predict a school's true triple-science rate at every school, independent or state-funded.
