GCSE Physics and Combined Science Are Different Qualifications

A pupil can leave Year 11 having sat a GCSE in Physics, or having sat no Physics GCSE at all, because Combined Science — the double-award qualification a majority of pupils in England now take — produces two grades on a 17-point scale (9-9 down to 1-1) and never awards a standalone Physics grade. Ofqual's own explainer on the reformed science qualifications states that a pupil taking Combined Science "will study all three sciences and they'll cover roughly two thirds of the content of the single GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics." AQA goes further on its own GCSE Physics specification page, confirming that "the subject content and required practicals in our GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy are also in our GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics," so a school "can co-teach or move students between courses" — the two routes overlap heavily in content even though only one of them produces a standalone Physics grade.

Exam-board specification codes confirm the same split holds at board level, and every code below is checked directly against the awarding body's own specification, not assumed from a pattern. AQA's GCSE Physics is specification 8463, distinct from its GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy, specification 8464. OCR runs two separate Physics specifications of its own — Gateway Science Physics A, J249, and Twenty First Century Science Physics B, J259 — each paired with its own Combined Science equivalent, J250 and J260 respectively. Pearson Edexcel's GCSE Physics carries specification code 1PH0, confirmed inside the specification's own PDF text (the code does not appear in the visible HTML of Pearson's qualification-listing page), and its Combined Science equivalent is 1SC0, confirmed the same way.

Nationally, the balance has been shifting toward Combined Science. FFT Education Datalab's analysis of the summer 2025 results, built on the figures JCQ and Ofqual published on results day, found that entries in the three separate sciences — biology, chemistry and physics together — fell by 6% year on year, while entries in double (Combined) science rose by 2%. Attainment moved the other way among pupils still sitting the separate route: more than 40% of triple-science entries nationally were graded 9-7 in 2025, though physics's own share of top grades rose by only one percentage point, against two-point rises for both biology and chemistry — the smallest attainment gain of the three separate sciences, even as its entries fell alongside theirs. Which Oxford School's Physics Entries Are Its Tightest Science Subject?

Oxfordshire enters proportionally more of its pupils for the three separate sciences than England does as a whole. In the 2025 results, 36.0% of the 7,068 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 in Oxfordshire's state-funded schools were entered for biology, chemistry and physics together — DfE's own definition of the triple-science route — against 23.3% of pupils in England's state-funded schools and 22.4% across all schools, state and independent (700,688 pupils). That county-wide average hides wide variation between individual Oxford schools, and, unlike the assumption that Chemistry is always the constraint, which of the three subjects actually sets each school's own ceiling varies too, as DfE's own subject-by-subject entry data below shows.

Line up Physics against the other two separate sciences at each school and the assumption that Chemistry is always the tightest does not survive. The Cherwell School, on Marston Ferry Road, entered 161 pupils for GCSE Physics in 2025 against 162 each for Biology and Chemistry — Physics, not Chemistry, is this school's tightest science subject, if only by a single pupil. Cheney School, in Headington, entered 121 pupils for both Physics and Chemistry against 122 for Biology, so Physics ties Chemistry rather than trailing it. Matthew Arnold School comes closest to the pattern Chemistry usually claims: its 191 Chemistry entries sit one pupil below its 192 for Physics, both well below its 194 Biology entries, from a 207-pupil cohort. Oxford Spires Academy shows the widest gap of any school here, with 61 Chemistry entries against 68 for Physics and 69 for Biology, from a 215-pupil cohort where 139 pupils took Combined Science instead. And at The Swan School, a mixed free school on Marston Ferry Road that opened more recently than any other school in this survey, DfE's subject-entry table records an exact three-way tie: 41 pupils for each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, from a 120-pupil cohort.

DfE's own triple-science entry measure — the share of a school's cohort entered for all three separate sciences together — is a separate published figure, not a repeat of whichever subject count happens to be lowest, so treat the two data sets as complementary rather than interchangeable. Matthew Arnold's published rate is 92.3%, the highest of any Oxfordshire secondary school on DfE's list; The Cherwell School sits at 59.9%; Cheney School at 42.6%; Oxford Spires Academy at 28.4%; and The Swan School at 34.2%. The Swan School's rate happens to be almost exactly what 41 pupils out of its 120-pupil cohort rounds to, but DfE's own published data elsewhere shows that equal subject counts do not automatically mean the same pupils sat all three: schools with identical Biology, Chemistry and Physics entries have recorded triple-science counts below all three individual figures, not equal to them. So The Swan School's three-way tie and its 34.2% rate are reported here as two separate published facts, not as proof the same 41 pupils sat every exam.

Why Doesn't a School's Physics Entry Count Simply Divide Into Its Triple-Science Rate?

DfE's triple-science measure counts only pupils entered for all three separate sciences, which fixes the direction of two bounds rather than one. First, the minimum of a school's three subject counts is a ceiling on its triple-science count: the published rate can never be higher than that minimum divided by the cohort. Second, because triple-science entry requires Physics entry specifically, a school's own Physics share of its cohort can never be lower than its published triple-science rate — Physics's own rate is a floor under the triple-science figure, never a ceiling on it, at any school where Physics is not itself the lowest of the three subjects.

At The Cherwell School, where Physics genuinely is the lowest count, the two figures meet almost exactly: 161 Physics entries over a 269-pupil cohort is 59.9% to one decimal place, matching the published triple-science rate exactly. At Cheney School, where Physics ties Chemistry for lowest, 121 entries over 282 pupils gives 42.9%, three-tenths of a percentage point above the published 42.6% — close, not identical, because a tied count does not guarantee the same 121 pupils sat both subjects. Oxford Spires Academy shows a gap running the other way: its 68 Physics entries over a 215-pupil cohort would allow a rate as high as 31.6%, well above its actual published 28.4%, because Chemistry's lower count of 61 is the true ceiling there, not Physics's.

The gap is largest of all at d'Overbroeck's, Oxford's selective independent school on Banbury Road: its 42 Physics entries over a 46-pupil cohort would allow a ceiling as high as 91.3%, the most of any school in this survey, yet DfE's own published triple-science rate for the school is 71.7% — 19.6 percentage points lower. DERIVED (declared): a 71.7% rate on a 46-pupil cohort implies roughly 33 pupils entered for all three sciences, so at least 9 of d'Overbroeck's 42 Physics pupils were not also entered for both Biology and Chemistry — proof that even Physics, the subject with the most entries at the school, does not simply divide into its published triple-science rate.

Does GCSE Physics Content Differ From Biology or Chemistry?

Physics is generally treated as the most maths-heavy of the three separate sciences, and Pearson Edexcel's own GCSE Physics specification is explicit about where that shows up in practice: "the minimum level of mathematics in the foundation tier examination papers will be equivalent to Key Stage 3 mathematics," rising to "the minimum level of mathematics in the higher tier examination papers will be equivalent to foundation tier GCSE in Mathematics." Physics also carries its own dedicated equations appendix — Appendix 2 in Edexcel's specification, titled "Equations in Physics" — listing formulae pupils "should be able to recall and apply" outright, and a further set they must "select from a list and apply," both taken directly from the Department for Education's Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSE subject content document published in June 2014. Biology and Chemistry each carry their own mathematical-skills requirements too, but neither is built around a comparable named appendix of physical equations to memorise and apply under exam conditions.

The gap in maths content is set by regulation, not by convention. Ofqual's own GCSE subject-level conditions for single science require that, across a GCSE Physics qualification's assessments, the marks crediting mathematical skills are no less than 30% of the marks allocated to assessment objectives AO1 to AO3, against minimums of 20% for Chemistry and 10% for Biology under the same conditions. AQA's own guide to how its GCSE science exams work republishes the identical three figures for its own qualifications, marking them as requirements set by the DfE and Ofqual rather than an AQA-specific choice. For the two Combined Science qualifications, Ofqual sets a single minimum instead: no less than 20% of the qualification's total marks, split between biology, chemistry and physics in a 1:2:3 ratio — so even within Combined Science, physics content still carries the heaviest of the three weightings, despite no separate Physics grade ever being awarded.

None of this changes which qualification a given Oxford pupil is actually sitting. A pupil on the Combined Science route at Oxford Spires Academy or Cheney School still meets the same DfE-published minimum maths standards for whichever tier they sit, just examined across shared papers covering roughly two-thirds of the single-GCSE depth rather than through a standalone Physics paper. What changes is the volume and structure of content a Foundation or Higher tier Physics student needs to hold in place for their own exam, which is exactly why a revision plan built for Combined Science does the wrong job for a pupil sitting separate Physics, and vice versa.

Where Does Physics Sit Inside the EBacc and Attainment 8?

Choosing Combined Science over separate Physics does not, on its own, cost a pupil their English Baccalaureate science requirement. The EBacc is built from five pillars — English, maths, science, a language, and history or geography — and Combined Science's two GCSE-equivalent grades satisfy the science pillar exactly as fully as two of the three separate sciences would, Physics included. There is no dedicated "science element" inside Attainment 8 in the way English and maths each get their own double-weighted slot: science, like the language and humanities pillars, competes for one of Attainment 8's three EBacc-qualifying slots rather than owning a slot outright.

Nationally, across the five EBacc pillars, DfE's own 2024/25 release records attainment as highest in English, then maths, then the sciences, then humanities, then languages — so a family choosing between Physics and Combined Science is not choosing between a "core" and a "lesser" science subject for EBacc purposes, only between two exam structures covering different amounts of physics content.

One further measure is missing from every school and every local authority in England for the 2024/25 and 2025/26 results, Oxford's schools included: Progress 8. The Department for Education states plainly that progress measures will not be published for either year, because the pupils sitting GCSEs in that window had no Key Stage 2 assessment data after primary tests were cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic. No Oxford school, however strong its Attainment 8 or EBacc figures, can report a Progress 8 score for 2025.

Why Do Search Results for This Exact Term Ignore Oxford's Schools?

The organic results actually ranking for "gcse physics tutors in oxford" are dominated by individual-tutor marketplaces and university-student bios, and none of them checks which subject is actually tightest at a specific Oxford school. The Oxbridge Tutor Company's physics page lists its tutors by university credential rather than by GCSE specialism: one tutor describes a Bachelor's and Master's in Astrophysics from the University of Cambridge, another a Physics and Philosophy degree from the University of Oxford, a third Theoretical Physics at Jesus College, Cambridge — all current or recent university students, none tied to a named Oxford secondary school or its own results. Tutor Hunt's own Oxford physics directory is explicitly "ordered by proximity to Oxford town centre," yet its results include tutors based in Stadhampton (9.9 miles from the centre) and Witney (11.4 miles) among the "Oxford Physics Tutors."

A further result is a single sole-trader site rather than a service built around Oxford's own schools: oxfordphysicstutor.co.uk, run by Chris Hack, who taught for over a decade at St Paul's Girls' School and Magdalen College School before tutoring independently; the page names no Oxford secondary school's own results and does not distinguish separate Physics from Combined Science anywhere. Sponsored results for the same search — national marketplaces advertising GCSE and A-level physics tuition at scale — carry the same gap: broad subject coverage, published review counts in the thousands, and no city-specific data of any kind. None of the results distinguishes the two GCSE science qualifications, and none names which Oxford school teaches which, or checks whether Chemistry is actually that school's tightest science subject.

Is Oxford's Independent Sector Any Different?

d'Overbroeck's, a selective independent school on Banbury Road with its own boarding places, actually enters more pupils for Physics than for either of the other two separate sciences: its 2025 subject-entry data records 42 GCSE Physics entries against 40 for Biology and 39 for Chemistry, with no Science: Double Award entries recorded at all, from a 46-pupil cohort. DfE's Get Information about Schools register confirms d'Overbroeck's remains open. But its published triple-science rate, 71.7%, sits well below what its own Physics entry count alone would suggest — a reminder that the school-by-school data above, from Matthew Arnold's 92.3% triple-science rate down to Oxford Spires' 28.4%, does not by itself predict a school's true triple-science rate at every school, independent or state-funded.
