In 2024/25, Reading entered 724 pupils for separate GCSE Chemistry — within a handful of Biology (729) and Physics (725) at borough level, according to the Department for Education. School by school the picture is not uniform: of Reading’s ten state secondaries with a 2024/25 GCSE cohort, only Reading Girls’ School and UTC Reading show Chemistry trailing the other two sciences, each by exactly one pupil.

What Is the Difference Between GCSE Chemistry and Combined Science?
A pupil entered for separate Chemistry sits it as one of three individual science GCSEs alongside Biology and Physics, each graded on its own on the usual 9-to-1 scale. A pupil entered for Combined Science instead sits one double-award qualification covering all three sciences together, producing two grades on a 17-point scale running from 9-9 down to 1-1 — Ofqual’s own guidance describes “two equal or adjacent grades from 9 to 1”, giving seventeen possible combinations from 9-9 down to 1-1. The two pathways are not two names for the same outcome: a Combined Science pupil has no GCSE called “Chemistry” on their certificate at all.
DfE’s own Key Stage 4 statistics keep the two pathways in separate rows, with a footnote that makes the distinction explicit: “Combined Science GCSE is a Double Award and is included in this table for the purpose of comparison with other Science subjects.” Both pathways can satisfy the science element of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) — DfE defines the EBacc plainly: “The EBacc shows how many pupils are entering GCSEs (or AS level qualifications) in core academic subjects at KS4. The EBacc consists of English, maths, science, a language, and history or geography.” A borough-wide “GCSE science” figure that does not say which pathway it describes is not describing either one precisely.
Where Does Reading’s Chemistry Entry Count Diverge From Biology and Physics, School by School?
To check whether Chemistry moves in step with Biology and Physics at every Reading school, we went beyond the borough-wide entries above and pulled each school’s own subject-entry breakdown directly from the Department’s Compare School Performance service. The school list itself comes from an independent GIAS search: fetching all 126 Reading local authority establishments across every phase and filtering locally to Secondary phase and Open status returns 11 schools. One of the 11, River Academy, is a free school that opened on 1 September 2024 with an 11-to-18 age range and had no Year 11 pupils at all in 2024/25 — its first Year 7 intake will not reach Year 11, the GCSE year, until 2028/29 — so it carries no 2024/25 results and is excluded below. The other 10 all reported outcomes and are named in the table.
Two of the ten need a note before the numbers. Hartland High School was created as a new establishment on 1 January 2025, the direct successor to John Madejski Academy on the same site with the same pupils, so its 2024/25 results are still published under the old name; the table carries that name. UTC Reading admits only from Year 10 (age 14) rather than Year 7, so its 79-pupil cohort had spent just two years at the school — a difference this page flags wherever UTC Reading’s figures appear, rather than comparing them directly against an 11-16 school’s.

Eight of the ten schools show identical Biology, Chemistry and Physics entries — Reading School and Kendrick enter effectively their whole cohort for all three (149 of 149, and 123 of 128, with the rest doing Combined Science); Highdown, Maiden Erlegh, Blessed Hugh Faringdon and King’s Academy Prospect each show a smaller, identical triple-science group alongside a larger Combined Science majority; John Madejski Academy enters just 3 pupils in each separate science against 112 in Combined Science; and The WREN School enters nobody in any separate science at all, with 152 of its 156-pupil cohort sitting Combined Science.
Only two schools break that pattern, and in both, Chemistry is the odd one out. Reading Girls’ School enters 164 pupils for Biology and 163 each for Chemistry and Physics; UTC Reading enters 78 for Biology and Physics and 77 for Chemistry — the sole lowest of the three there, rather than tied with Physics. Both gaps are a single pupil, consistent with the borough-wide pattern in DfE’s own local-authority data, where Chemistry’s 724 entries are also the lowest of the three separate sciences — though a two-school, one-pupil pattern is not evidence of a mechanism, just of what Reading’s own data shows in 2024/25.
Summed across these 10 schools, the entries come to 725 Biology, 723 Chemistry, 724 Physics and 862 Combined Science — within 1 to 4 pupils of DfE’s own published local-authority totals (729, 724, 725 and 866), a gap of around 29 pupils that DfE’s data does not itemise by school.

Why Doesn’t Reading’s Triple-Science Pillar Total Match Any Single Subject’s Entries?
Triple science is DfE’s own term for pupils entered for Biology, Chemistry and Physics together, and it is tracked as a separate measure inside the EBacc’s science pillar — not calculated by taking the smallest of the three subject totals. Reading recorded 722 pupils entered for triple science in 2024/25: lower than Chemistry’s own 724 entries, and further still below Physics’s 725 and Biology’s 729. Chemistry sits nearest of the three to that combined figure, but the gap confirms the two are genuinely separate Department measures, not one derived from the other.
DfE also publishes a score Attainment 8 does not: the EBacc science pillar’s own average point score (APS). Reading’s all-schools APS was 5.02 in 2024/25 against England’s 4.47, with the borough’s two selective schools recording 8.49 and its non-selective schools 4.41. The APS exists as a distinct measure because science counts twice inside the calculation — DfE’s own guidance explains it divides by “6 (the science grades count in 2 pillars, meaning a total of 6 pillars)”, the only subject group in the whole EBacc that counts twice for a single result.

Which Exam Boards Set GCSE Chemistry, and What Do the Specification Codes Mean?
Nationally, GCSE Chemistry is set by three exam boards. AQA’s specification is Chemistry, 8462, split into a Foundation Tier graded 1 to 5 and a Higher Tier graded 4 to 9, with an allowed grade 3 for a candidate who narrowly misses a 4. Pearson Edexcel’s equivalent is Chemistry, 1CH0. OCR offers two separate Chemistry specifications: Gateway Science (Chemistry A, J248) and Twenty First Century Science (Chemistry B, J258). Which of these a Reading pupil sits depends on their own school’s choice of board, not their postcode — DfE does not publish exam-board choice at local-authority level, so this page does not attribute a specific board to any specific Reading school above.

Does Attainment 8 Have a Separate Chemistry Score?
No. Attainment 8 measures a pupil’s best results across eight qualification slots — DfE’s own definition: “Attainment 8 measures the average achievement of pupils in up to 8 qualifications. This includes: English language; English literature (double weighted providing both English language and English literature are taken); maths (double weighted); three further qualifications that count in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc); and three further qualifications that can be GCSE qualifications (including EBacc subjects) or any other non-GCSE qualifications on the DfE approved list.” Chemistry sits inside that middle group of three EBacc slots, alongside a language and history or geography — there is no separate “Chemistry element” the way there is an English element and a maths element. Reading School’s own results confirm this in practice, not just in DfE’s general definition: its Attainment 8 sub-score for “EBacc slots” — the bundle covering science, languages and humanities together — was 25.8 in 2024/25, next to an overall Attainment 8 score of 83, with no Chemistry, Biology or Physics figure broken out anywhere in that published breakdown.
Progress 8, the companion measure that tracks results against pupils’ Key Stage 2 starting points, is not published at all for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 cohorts. The Department states it plainly: “It is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26. This is because there is no KS2 prior attainment data available to use to calculate Progress 8 when the relevant cohorts reach the end of KS4 as primary tests and assessments were cancelled in academic years 2019/20 and 2020/21 due to COVID-19 disruption.” and confirms none is coming: “In April 2024 the previous government announced that there will be no replacement for Progress 8 for 2024/25 and 2025/26.” DfE’s next Key Stage 4 release, covering the 2025/26 cohort, is due in October 2026.

How Should Families Choose the Right Chemistry Support for Reading’s Two Science Pathways?
The practical difference between the two pathways matters more than the borough-wide averages above suggest. A Combined Science pupil is working towards two grades across all three sciences inside one qualification, so a single weak topic in Chemistry can pull down both grades at once. A triple-science pupil sits Chemistry as a separate paper with its own grade, so a weakness there does not touch Biology or Physics — but three exams also means three specifications, three sets of required practicals and three revision timetables inside the same academic year.
Reading’s own entry pattern means both situations are common here. A family at Reading School or Kendrick is very likely managing a triple-science course aimed at grades 7 to 9 across Chemistry, Biology and Physics; a family at Reading Girls’ School or UTC Reading is more likely managing Chemistry as part of that same triple-science group, but should not assume an identical entry pattern to Biology and Physics without checking; and a family at The WREN School or John Madejski Academy is almost certainly managing Combined Science, where the realistic target may be a secure grade 4 or 5 across both papers.

That is not a chemistry-specific gap — it applies equally to Biology and Physics at that school — and GIAS records no admissions-policy value for The WREN School, so this page does not classify it as selective or non-selective either.
Is Chemistry Reading’s tightest constraint on the borough’s triple-science total?
It comes closest of the three, though not exactly. Reading’s own triple-science pillar — DfE’s count of pupils entered for Biology, Chemistry and Physics together — was 722 pupils in 2024/25, lower than Chemistry’s own 724 entries and further still below Physics’s 725 and Biology’s 729. Chemistry’s entry count sits nearest to that combined figure, but the triple-science pillar is a separate, stricter pupil-level measure DfE publishes in its own right, not simply the smallest of the three subject totals.

Why doesn’t Attainment 8 show a separate score for Chemistry?
Attainment 8 has eight qualification slots — English and maths each double-weighted, three further EBacc slots and three open slots — and Chemistry results sit inside the EBacc slots alongside Biology, Physics, languages and humanities rather than having a line of their own. Reading School’s own published breakdown shows this directly: its Attainment 8 sub-score for “EBacc slots” was 25.8 in 2024/25, next to an overall Attainment 8 score of 83, with no separate Chemistry, Biology or Physics figure printed anywhere in that breakdown.
