Physics is not the borough’s tightest constraint on triple science, though: that title belongs to Chemistry, by a single pupil, even before accounting for two schools where DfE’s own data puts the true triple-science count below either subject’s own entries.

What Is the Difference Between GCSE Physics and Combined Science?

A pupil entered for separate Physics sits it as one of three individual science GCSEs alongside Biology and Chemistry, each graded on its own on the usual 9-to-1 scale. A pupil entered for Combined Science instead sits one double-award qualification covering all three sciences together, producing two grades on a 17-point scale running from 9-9 down to 1-1 — Ofqual’s own guidance describes “two equal or adjacent grades from 9 to 1”, giving seventeen possible combinations from 9-9 down to 1-1. The two pathways are not two names for the same outcome: a Combined Science pupil has no GCSE called “Physics” on their certificate at all.

DfE’s own Key Stage 4 statistics keep the two pathways in separate rows, with a footnote that makes the distinction explicit: “Combined Science GCSE is a Double Award and is included in this table for the purpose of comparison with other Science subjects.” Both pathways can satisfy the science element of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) — DfE defines the EBacc plainly: “The EBacc shows how many pupils are entering GCSEs (or AS level qualifications) in core academic subjects at KS4. The EBacc consists of English, maths, science, a language, and history or geography.” A borough-wide “GCSE science” figure that does not say which pathway it describes is not describing either one precisely.

Nationally, GCSE Physics is set by three exam boards, each verified against its own specification rather than trusted from memory. AQA’s specification is Physics, 8463. Pearson Edexcel’s equivalent is Physics, 1PH0, confirmed from the specification PDF’s own cover page. OCR offers two separate Physics specifications: Gateway Science (Physics A, J249) and Twenty First Century Science (Physics B, J259). Which of these a Reading pupil sits depends on their own school’s choice of board, not their postcode — DfE does not publish exam-board choice at local-authority level, so this page does not attribute a specific board to any specific Reading school.

Is Physics Reading’s Tightest Constraint on Triple Science, or Is Chemistry?

Both sides of the comparison below cover the same population: DfE’s subject-level local authority data is state-funded schools only, and the England row is the same dataset’s state-funded national total, not an all-schools or all-ages figure.

A naive assumption might expect Physics, often described as the hardest of the three sciences to recruit into, to be Reading’s tightest bottleneck on triple science. Reading’s own 2024/25 figures say otherwise: Physics entered 725 pupils, one more than Chemistry’s 724 and four fewer than Biology’s 729, so Physics sits in the middle of the three, not at the bottom. DfE’s own triple-science pillar — pupils entered for Biology, Chemistry and Physics together — came to 722 pupils in 2024/25, lower than all three individual subjects, exactly as it must be: a pupil counted in the triple-science total has to be entered for all three, so the triple-science count can never exceed any single subject’s own entries.

That relationship holds as a share of Reading’s 1,652-pupil cohort too. Physics’ own share is 725 ÷ 1,652 = 43.9%; Chemistry’s is 724 ÷ 1,652 = 43.8%; Biology’s is 729 ÷ 1,652 = 44.1%; and the triple-science share is 722 ÷ 1,652 = 43.7%. Every subject’s own share sits at or above the triple-science share, which is the correct direction: the triple-science rate is a floor under each subject’s own rate, never a ceiling on it. Chemistry’s 43.8% sits closest to that 43.7% floor, making Chemistry — not Physics — the borough’s tightest constraint on its triple-science total, by a margin of exactly one pupil. That is a pattern in this year’s Reading data, not proof that Physics recruits more easily than Chemistry here; the next section shows it can flip at individual-school level even where the subject counts look identical.

Which Reading Schools Show a Triple-Science Pupil Count Below Their Own Physics Entries?

The borough-wide entries above blend all ten of Reading’s state secondaries into one figure. To see whether Physics moves in step with Biology and Chemistry at every individual school, we went beyond the subjects-entered table and pulled a different DfE page for each school: its own additional-entry-and-achievement-measures page, which publishes a school-level triple-science entry rate — the percentage of pupils entered for Biology, Chemistry and Physics together — alongside the school’s own Key Stage 4 cohort size. That rate is DfE’s own published figure, not something calculated from the subject-entries table above.

The school list itself comes from an independent GIAS search: fetching all 126 Reading local authority establishments across every phase and filtering locally to Secondary phase and Open status returns 11 schools. One of the 11, River Academy, is a free school that opened on 1 September 2024 with an 11-to-18 age range and had no Year 11 pupils at all in 2024/25 — its first Year 7 intake will not reach Year 11, the GCSE year, until 2028/29 — so it carries no 2024/25 results and is excluded below. The other 10 all reported outcomes. Hartland High School was created as a new establishment on 1 January 2025, the direct successor to John Madejski Academy on the same site with the same pupils, so its 2024/25 results are still published under the old name; the table carries that name.

These ten schools’ own KS4 cohorts sum to 1,623 pupils, 29 short of the 1,652-pupil LA total above — both figures cover state-funded schools only, so the gap is not Reading’s independent schools (which DfE’s local-authority data excludes entirely) but the small number of state-funded pupils in alternative-provision and special-school settings that this table does not itemise by name. DfE does not publish the raw triple-science headcount per school directly, only this rate, rounded to one decimal place — so the whole-number counts below are the single integer consistent with each school’s own published rate and cohort size, shown with the working, not an independent DfE figure. At eight of the ten schools, that arithmetic lines up exactly with the school’s own Physics entries, because Biology, Chemistry and Physics are identical there: Reading School’s 100.0% of 149 is 149; Kendrick’s 96.1% of 128 is 123.0, matching its 123 Physics entries; Highdown’s 27.0% of 248 is 67.0; Maiden Erlegh’s 25.0% of 180 is 45.0; Blessed Hugh Faringdon’s 34.9% of 186 is 64.9, rounding to its 65 entries; John Madejski Academy’s 2.4% of 125 is 3.0; and King’s Academy Prospect’s 15.1% of 205 is 31.0.

Only two schools break that pattern, and at both, the true triple-science count comes in below even the lowest of the three subjects’ own entries. Reading Girls’ School enters 164 pupils for Biology and 163 each for Chemistry and Physics, yet its published 97.0% rate of a 167-pupil cohort is consistent with only 162 pupils entered for all three sciences together — one fewer than either Chemistry or Physics alone. UTC Reading enters 78 for Biology and Physics and 77 for Chemistry, yet its published 96.2% rate of 79 pupils is consistent with only 76 pupils entered for all three — one fewer even than Chemistry’s own lowest count. In other words, at both schools, some pupils entered for two of the three separate sciences are not entered for the third, so the school’s own Physics entries slightly overstate how many of its pupils are doing full triple science. That is what Reading’s own two-school pattern shows this year, not evidence of a mechanism that would apply to any other city or cohort.

What Does Separate Physics Cover That Combined Science Does Not?

Beyond the certificate itself, AQA’s specification — the largest of the three boards by entries nationally — sets out concrete differences between separate Physics and Combined Science, verified directly against the specification document rather than trusted from memory. Students taking AQA GCSE Physics must complete ten required practical activities in total. Eight of these are shared with GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy and GCSE Combined Science: Synergy, but two — required practical activities 2 and 9 — are Physics-only, as AQA’s own specification states: “Practicals 1, 3‒8 and 10 are common with GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy and GCSE Combined Science: Synergy. Practicals 2 and 9 are GCSE Physics only.” The apparatus and techniques students must master follow the same split: of eight apparatus categories, seven are shared with Combined Science and one, covering the interaction of waves with matter, is Physics-only — “AT 1‒7 are common with combined science. AT 8 is physics only.”

Physics-only content extends to a whole topic area. AQA’s specification lists “Space physics (physics only)” as its own numbered section, content Combined Science: Trilogy students do not cover at all, alongside seven topics — energy, electricity, particle model of matter, atomic structure, forces, waves, and magnetism and electromagnetism — that are largely co-teachable across both qualifications. Practical work also carries real weight in the exam room: AQA’s specification states that “questions in the written exams will draw on the knowledge and understanding students have gained by carrying out the practical activities listed below. These questions will count for at least 15% of the overall marks for the qualification.” Both tiers are graded the same way as Reading’s other separate sciences — Foundation Tier 1 to 5, Higher Tier 4 to 9, with an allowed grade 3 for a candidate who narrowly misses a 4 — so the practical and content differences above, not the grading structure, are what actually separates a Physics course from a Combined Science one.

Physics also carries the heaviest mathematical-skills requirement of the three separate sciences, though as a floor rather than a fixed share. Ofqual’s own GCSE Subject Level Conditions and Requirements for Single Science set that floor directly: the marks crediting mathematical skills must be “no less than” 30 per cent of the combined AO1-to-AO3 total for Physics, against 20 per cent for Chemistry and 10 per cent for Biology. AQA’s own guidance to schools states the same three minimums in one line — “A minimum of 10% of marks will test mathematical skills in biology; 20% in chemistry; and 30% in physics” — and marks the requirement as one set by the Department for Education and Ofqual, not by AQA itself. The same guidance adds that the two Combined Science qualifications split mathematical skills across all three sciences in that same 1:2:3 ratio. A course with at least three times Biology’s mathematical-skills floor is not simply “more content” than Combined Science; it demands sustained numerical fluency alongside the physics itself.

Why Doesn’t Attainment 8 Show a Separate Score for Physics?

Attainment 8 measures a pupil’s best results across eight qualification slots — DfE’s own definition: “Attainment 8 measures the average achievement of pupils in up to 8 qualifications. This includes: English language; English literature (double weighted providing both English language and English literature are taken); maths (double weighted); three further qualifications that count in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc); and three further qualifications that can be GCSE qualifications (including EBacc subjects) or any other non-GCSE qualifications on the DfE approved list.” Physics sits inside that middle group of three EBacc slots, alongside a language and history or geography — there is no separate “Physics element” the way there is an English element and a maths element. Kendrick School’s own results confirm this in practice: its Attainment 8 sub-score for “EBacc slots” — the bundle covering science, languages and humanities together — was 25.6 in 2024/25, against a Reading-wide EBacc-slots average of 15.2 and an England average of 13.5, next to Kendrick’s own overall Attainment 8 score of 84, with no Physics, Biology or Chemistry figure broken out anywhere in that published breakdown.

Progress 8, the companion measure that tracks results against pupils’ Key Stage 2 starting points, is not published at all for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 cohorts. The Department states it plainly: “It is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26. This is because there is no KS2 prior attainment data available to use to calculate Progress 8 when the relevant cohorts reach the end of KS4 as primary tests and assessments were cancelled in academic years 2019/20 and 2020/21 due to COVID-19 disruption.” and confirms none is coming: “In April 2024 the previous government announced that there will be no replacement for Progress 8 for 2024/25 and 2025/26.” DfE’s next Key Stage 4 release, covering the 2025/26 cohort, is due in October 2026.

How Should Families Choose the Right Physics Support for Reading’s Two Science Pathways?

The practical difference between the two pathways matters more than the borough-wide averages above suggest. A Combined Science pupil is working towards two grades across all three sciences inside one qualification, so a single weak topic in Physics can pull down both grades at once. A triple-science pupil sits Physics as a separate paper with its own grade, its own required practicals and its own Space physics content — but three exams also means three specifications and three revision timetables inside the same academic year.

Reading’s own entry pattern means both situations are common here. A family at Reading School or Kendrick is very likely managing a triple-science course aimed at grades 7 to 9 across Physics, Biology and Chemistry; a family at Reading Girls’ School or UTC Reading is more likely managing Physics as part of that same triple-science group, but should not assume every one of their child’s Biology or Chemistry classmates is sitting an identical set of three sciences; and a family at The WREN School or John Madejski Academy is almost certainly managing Combined Science, where the realistic target may be a secure grade 4 or 5 across both papers.

At Reading Girls’ School, Biology, Chemistry and Physics entries are 164, 163 and 163, but the Department’s own additional-measures page puts the school’s triple-science entry rate at 97.0% of its 167-pupil cohort — a figure consistent with only 162 pupils entered for all three sciences together, one fewer than either Chemistry or Physics alone. At UTC Reading, Physics and Biology both enter 78 pupils and Chemistry 77, but the published 96.2% rate is consistent with only 76 pupils entered for all three — one fewer even than Chemistry’s own lowest count. At Reading’s other eight secondaries, where all three sciences carry identical entries, the published rate lines up exactly with that entry count instead.

Why does The WREN School report zero pupils for separate GCSE Physics?

Because none of its 156 GCSE-cohort pupils sat it: The WREN School’s own subjects-entered data lists no Physics, Biology or Chemistry GCSE entries at all, and 152 of its 156 pupils entered for Combined Science instead. That is not a physics-specific gap — it applies equally to Biology and Chemistry at that school — and GIAS records no admissions-policy value for The WREN School, so this page does not classify it as selective or non-selective either.

Which exam boards set GCSE Physics, and what do the specification codes mean?

Nationally, GCSE Physics is set by three boards: AQA (Physics, specification 8463), Pearson Edexcel (Physics, 1PH0) and OCR, which offers two versions — Gateway Science (Physics A, J249) and Twenty First Century Science (Physics B, J259). Why doesn’t Attainment 8 show a separate score for Physics?

Attainment 8 has eight qualification slots — English and maths each double-weighted, three further EBacc slots and three open slots — and Physics results sit inside the EBacc slots alongside Biology, Chemistry, languages and humanities rather than having a line of their own. Kendrick School’s own published breakdown shows this directly: its Attainment 8 sub-score for “EBacc slots” was 25.6 in 2024/25, next to an overall Attainment 8 score of 84, with no separate Physics, Biology or Chemistry figure printed anywhere in that breakdown.

Is there a Progress 8 figure for Reading’s 2024/25 Physics cohort?

No. The Department states plainly: “It is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26. This is because there is no KS2 prior attainment data available to use to calculate Progress 8 when the relevant cohorts reach the end of KS4 as primary tests and assessments were cancelled in academic years 2019/20 and 2020/21 due to COVID-19 disruption.” It also confirms none is coming: “In April 2024 the previous government announced that there will be no replacement for Progress 8 for 2024/25 and 2025/26.” Any Progress 8 number attached to a current Reading Physics result predates that cohort.

The Department’s next Key Stage 4 performance release, covering the 2025/26 cohort, is scheduled for October 2026 according to the publication’s own release timetable. That update will show whether Reading Girls’ School and UTC Reading’s below-minimum triple-science counts persist, and whether Chemistry remains the borough’s tightest constraint on triple science rather than Physics.
