King Edward VII School's 65 entries are more than four times The Sheffield College's 14, and 65 times UTC Sheffield City Centre's single entry. All eight rows are recorded at GCE A level, not AS level, and sit apart from any BTEC 'Applied Sciences' row the same institution's table may separately carry — a different qualification, on a different specification, examined a different way.

The two UTCs are the sharpest finding here. University technical colleges combine mainstream academic subjects with technical, employer-linked learning and take pupils from age 13 rather than 11 — both of Sheffield's are open and confirmed at GIAS — yet between them they entered just 3 students for A-level Biology in 2025. A parent should check a UTC's own published entry count directly rather than assume, from its STEM branding, that Biology is well represented there.

What Are Sheffield's Overall A-Level Results, and Where Does Biology Fit Within Them?

DfE's 16-to-18 performance tables publish an average point score and equivalent letter grade for every A-level an institution enters, together with a progress score measuring the same students against their own GCSE starting points. They do not publish a subject-level score of the kind the GCSE tables carry for English or Maths — so there is no DfE figure that reads 'this is Sheffield's average A-level Biology grade' at any of the eight institutions above. Read alongside the Biology entry counts, the range is striking. Sheffield High School GDST posts the highest average result, grade A at 48.47 points, from a cohort of just 73 — fewer A-level students in total than King Edward VII School enters for Biology alone, within its far larger 254-student cohort. The two UTCs and The Sheffield College sit at the other end, all three banded 'below average' or worse on progress, and each entering single or low-double-digit Biology numbers.

Progress, not the raw average, is the more useful of the two figures for judging teaching rather than intake, because it measures the same students against their own GCSE starting points. Notre Dame High School is the only one of the eight banded above average, at +0.14, despite recording a lower raw average (35.42) than Sheffield High School GDST's 48.47. Sheffield High School GDST, King Edward VII School and Longley Park Sixth Form Academy are all banded average; Chapeltown Academy and both UTCs are banded below average; and The Sheffield College, at -0.98, is banded well below average — a band DfE applies, in its own words, when the score is lower than -0.6 and the entire confidence interval falls below zero.

Which Exam Board Do Sheffield's Institutions Use for A-Level Biology?

DfE's 16-to-18 tables record entries and results, not exam boards — which board sets an institution's papers has to come from the institution itself. King Edward VII School's own live sixth-form curriculum page, read 2 September 2026, lists 'Biology (AQA)' among its current A-level courses. That is a 2026 course list, not a record of which board its 65 Biology entries in the 2025 results were actually sat under, but it is the one Sheffield-specific, dated exam-board fact this page could confirm directly from an institution's own page rather than infer.

AQA, OCR (in two specifications, Biology A and Biology B/Advancing Biology) and Pearson Edexcel (also in two specifications, Biology A/Salters-Nuffield and Biology B) all currently offer A-level Biology, each first taught from September 2015. What Is the Practical Endorsement, and Does It Count Towards the A-Level Biology Grade?

A-level Biology, like A-level Chemistry and Physics, carries a Science Practical Endorsement reported separately from the A*–E grade. Pearson's own Biology B specification states plainly that 'the Endorsement will not contribute to the overall grade for this qualification, but the result will be recorded on the student's certificate' — a student who does not pass the practical assessment is recorded as 'Not Classified' instead. The convention is the same across boards: a strong written-paper grade and a Not Classified endorsement can sit on the same certificate, and an institution's overall average result, in the table above, says nothing about how its students perform on the practical component specifically, because DfE does not publish endorsement outcomes in the same tables.

How Does Studying A-Level Biology at Sheffield's FE College or UTCs Differ From a School Sixth Form?

The Sheffield College is Sheffield's only general further education college examined here, and A-levels are a minority programme within it: DfE records 118 students enrolled to study mainly A-levels in 2025, inside a far larger further-education population studying applied general and other qualifications. Its A-level retention — the share of those 118 students who completed their main study programme — is 76.3%, against 85.9% across Sheffield's state-funded schools and colleges and 93.1% across England's state-funded schools and colleges. That is roughly one A-level student in four not completing the programme they enrolled on, worth raising directly with the college rather than assuming from its overall size.

Chapeltown Academy, Sheffield's 16-19 free school, is a useful contrast on the same measure: its A-level retention is 98.3%, from 119 students enrolled to study mainly A-levels — well above both the Sheffield and England state-funded averages, despite Chapeltown's whole-programme average result, grade C at 29.72 points, sitting below the Sheffield state-funded average of 34.95. Retention and average grade measure different things: one is whether a student finishes the two years, the other is what grade they finish with.

Sheffield's two UTCs illustrate a different DfE quirk: an absent figure is not always a zero. UTC Sheffield City Centre had 80 A-level students complete their studies in 2025, but the separate 'students enrolled to study mainly A-levels' figure DfE needs to calculate retention is marked 'NE' on the institution's own page, meaning the data is not available for that measure — not that retention was zero or poor. UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park's equivalent figure is marked 'SUPP', DfE's code for a number suppressed because it is too small to publish — its own page states only 5 students were enrolled to study mainly A-levels there in 2025, alongside its 2 A-level Biology entries.

What GCSE Grades Does a Sheffield Sixth Form Ask For Before A-Level Biology?

Entry requirements for A-level Biology are set and published by the institution itself, not DfE. King Edward VII School's own sixth-form admissions page, read 2 September 2026, is explicit: 'Grade 6s in Combined Science or Grade 6 in GCSE Biology and Grade 6 in either Chemistry or Physics. Grade 6 in Mathematics.' A student needs a supporting grade in a second science and in Maths, not a grade 6 in Biology alone.

This page could not find an equivalent published, dated entry-requirement figure for the other seven institutions studied here as of 2 September 2026 — Notre Dame High School's sixth-form pages list Biology among its A-level subjects without publishing a grade threshold, and the remaining institutions' admissions pages were not found to specify one either. Where a requirement is not published, this page does not assume it matches King Edward VII School's; a family should ask the sixth form directly.
