DfE's provisional summer 2026 English Language and English Literature grades for Sutton's schools, and one-to-one online GCSE English tuition built on them.
Book a Free ConsultationLeading Tuition's GCSE English tutors in Sutton are expert one-to-one online teachers who start from each pupil's own school and the weaker of the two English GCSEs, because DfE's provisional summer 2026 figures put grade 4 or above in English Language between 64% at Oaks Park High School and 100% at Wilson's School, and in English Literature between 59% and 100%.
Sutton means the London borough, DfE's local authority 319. Sixteen Sutton schools have 30 or more GCSE (9-1) entries in each subject, and together they made 3,430 English Language entries and 3,394 English Literature entries.
Our expert English tutors help Sutton pupils with English Language and English Literature as two separate GCSEs, one-to-one online, starting from the pupil's own school and the weaker of the two.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppEnglish Language and English Literature are two separate GCSEs with separate grades, and DfE reports them separately, so the two tables below are never added together. Each row gives the school's pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 beside its entries, because an entry count is not a headcount: a school's pupils may take a qualification that DfE's GCSE full-course table does not carry. Grade 4+ counts entries at grades 4 to 9, and grade 7+ counts entries at grades 7 to 9.

Across the same 16 schools, 2905 of 3394 English Literature entries were at grade 4 or above, which is 85.6%, and 1424 were at grade 7 or above, which is 42.0%. The share at grade 4 or above runs from 59% at Oaks Park High School, from 210 entries, to 100% at Nonsuch High School for Girls, Sutton High School GDST and Wallington High School for Girls. Wilson's School is at 99% in Literature, from 193 entries.
Entries and pupils differ at some schools. Oaks Park High School has 238 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 against 233 English Language entries and 210 English Literature entries, and Carshalton High School for Girls has 241 pupils against 234 and 228. The tables give DfE's counts as published and draw no conclusion from a gap between the two.
A pupil sits two English GCSEs, and at several Sutton schools the two shares are not close. At The John Fisher School, grade 4 or above is 72% (135 of 187) in English Language and 82% (153 of 186) in English Literature, a gap of 10 percentage points. At Oaks Park High School it runs the other way, with 64% (149 of 233) in Language and 59% (123 of 210) in Literature. Overton Grange School has 68% in Language and 73% in Literature, and Greenshaw High School 82% and 87%.
Glenthorne High School shows 90% in both subjects, from 284 entries in each, and Harris Academy Sutton shows 81% in both, from 210. At grade 7 or above the picture changes again: Wallington High School for Girls has 87% in Language and 78% in Literature, Sutton Grammar School 86% and 75%, and Wilson's School 96% and 88%.

Each cell in the table is a share of that school's entries in that one subject. The figures are counts and shares as DfE publishes them; the table makes no claim about why a school's two subjects differ. A tutor uses it differently: a pupil's own school gives a starting point, and the pupil's latest mock paper in each subject decides which GCSE the first sessions work on.
Expert one-to-one online GCSE English tutoring for Sutton pupils covers the Language and Literature papers separately, with a first diagnostic in each so the plan starts where the pupil is weaker.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppMy son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
Where nearly every entry reaches grade 4, the pass line stops telling schools apart, and the grade 9 counts do. Nonsuch High School for Girls recorded 74 grade 9 entries in English Language and 84 in English Literature, each from 204 entries. Wilson's School recorded 73 in Language and 57 in Literature, from 193 entries in each. Wallington High School for Girls recorded 60 and 41, from 208, and Sutton Grammar School 40 and 31, from 134.
Further down the table the counts are small. Glenthorne High School recorded 33 grade 9 entries in English Language and 43 in English Literature, from 284 entries each. Oaks Park High School recorded 1 in Language and 3 in Literature, and Overton Grange School 2 and 6. The John Fisher School recorded 3 in English Language and 0 in English Literature, from 186 Literature entries; DfE's rows for that school add up to its total, so the 0 is a recorded count and not a gap in the data.
Across the 16 schools, DfE's counts give 386 grade 9 entries in English Language and 368 in English Literature. Where the target is grade 7 or higher, the 7+ and 9 columns are the more useful comparison than the 4+ column: at Nonsuch High School for Girls the Language 7+ share is 93%, against 12% at Oaks Park High School.
The Department for Education's Get Information About Schools register lists five of the 16 schools as selective: Nonsuch High School for Girls, Sutton Grammar School, Wallington County Grammar School, Wallington High School for Girls and Wilson's School. Their grade 4 or above shares are 99% or 100% in both subjects. GIAS lists ten of the 16 as non-selective: Carshalton Boys Sports College, Carshalton High School for Girls, Cheam High School, Glenthorne High School, Greenshaw High School, Harris Academy Sutton, Oaks Park High School, Overton Grange School, St Philomena's Catholic High School for Girls and The John Fisher School.
Among those ten, English Language grade 4 or above runs from 64% at Oaks Park High School to 90% at Glenthorne High School, and English Literature from 59% at Oaks Park High School to 90% at Glenthorne High School. The combined figure for the 16 schools, 84.2% in Language and 85.6% in Literature, sits inside the range of the ten and below all five of the others, so it describes neither group. A family reads the row for the child's own school, and the group that school belongs to.
Sessions are one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard, so a pupil at any Sutton school can work with a tutor from home. A programme begins with a short diagnostic in each of English Language and English Literature against the pupil's own school and exam board, because the two GCSEs have separate papers and separate grades. The tutor then builds the plan around whichever of the two is weaker for that pupil, working through that pupil's own past papers and marking them against the real mark scheme.
Session notes go to parents after each lesson, and progress is reviewed against the pupil's own target grade at agreed intervals. Our GCSE English Language tuition and GCSE English Literature tuition pages set out each course, and the GCSE English hub covers both together. 91% of Leading Tuition students achieve their desired grades.
Book a call about GCSE English tuition for your child's school and weaker subject, and we will set out an English Language and English Literature plan with a tutor who teaches both one-to-one online.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppDfE labels the release provisional. Its key stage 4 performance release was published on 15 October 2026 and last updated on 28 October 2026, and the dataset behind the tables, Subject school level exam data version 2.0, covers the 2025/26 academic year. Any approved result amendments that schools requested have not been applied.
No Progress 8 exists for these pupils: DfE states that it is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for 2024/25 or 2025/26. Nothing in the tables measures how much a school added to a pupil's grade, and a school's English figures say nothing about its other subjects.
DfE's GCSE full-course table lists 20 Sutton schools for English Language and 16 for English Literature. Four of the 20 have between 2 and 7 English Language entries (Brookways School 7, Wandle Valley Academy 5, Grove Road School 4 and Greenholm School 2), and they sit below our cut of 30 entries, so they are not read here. Entries are not pupils, so those counts say nothing about the schools themselves.
For the wider Sutton picture see tutoring in Sutton, and for the same data on a different subject see GCSE maths tutors in Sutton. DfE publishes the source data on Explore education statistics.
No. DfE published its key stage 4 release on 15 October 2026 and labels it provisional, with approved result amendments that schools requested not yet applied. This page reads Subject school level exam data version 2.0, which gives 162 English Language rows for 20 Sutton schools and 157 English Literature rows for 16. A school's counts can therefore still change, and every figure here carries that caveat.
Four schools did, on DfE's provisional summer 2026 counts: Nonsuch High School for Girls (204 entries), Wallington High School for Girls (208), Sutton Grammar School (134) and Wilson's School (193). In English Literature the schools at 100% are Nonsuch High School for Girls, Wallington High School for Girls and Sutton High School GDST (105 entries). Wilson's School is at 99% in Literature, with 192 of 193 entries at grade 4 or above.
They are two GCSEs with separate grades, and DfE publishes them as separate subjects. Carshalton High School for Girls shows 234 English Language entries and 228 English Literature entries, and The John Fisher School shows 72% at grade 4 or above in Language against 82% in Literature. A tutor therefore diagnoses the two separately and starts with whichever is weaker, rather than treating English as a single score.
Across the 16 Sutton schools with 30 or more entries, DfE's provisional counts give 386 grade 9 entries in English Language, from 3,430 entries, and 368 in English Literature, from 3,394. Nonsuch High School for Girls accounts for 74 and 84 of them, and The John Fisher School recorded 0 in Literature from 186 entries. The two subjects are counted separately and are not added together.
The Get Information About Schools register, read on 31 October 2026, lists Nonsuch High School for Girls, Sutton Grammar School, Wallington County Grammar School, Wallington High School for Girls and Wilson's School as selective, and ten of the other schools on this page as non-selective. Their English grade 4+ shares are 99% or 100% in both subjects, against 59% to 90% for the ten non-selective schools.
The tables read only schools with 30 or more entries. DfE's English Language table lists 20 Sutton schools, and four have between 2 and 7 entries: Brookways School 7, Wandle Valley Academy 5, Grove Road School 4 and Greenholm School 2. Entries are not pupils, so a low entry count says nothing about a school. A pupil at any of the four can still work with one of our tutors online.
No. A share describes a year group, not one pupil. Overton Grange School has 68% at grade 4 or above in English Language and 73% in English Literature, and Greenshaw High School has 82% and 87%, yet a single pupil in either year can be stronger in the other subject. A tutor starts from the pupil's latest mock paper in each GCSE, then plans around the weaker one.
A family books a free consultation through the button on this page or by WhatsApp. The first step is a short diagnostic in English Language and in English Literature against the pupil's own school and exam board. Sessions then run one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard, working through the pupil's own past papers, with session notes shared with parents after each lesson.
Book a free consultation and we will build an English Language and English Literature programme around your child's own school and weaker subject.
