A-level Physics in Twickenham is taught across sixteen providers in and around the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Of the ten whose Physics entry requirements we could read, three print a lower GCSE Maths grade on the Physics line than the same document asks for A-level Maths, and three more print none while requiring the Maths A-level. At the borough's eight state-funded schools, 140 of 142 Physics students also took Maths.
Our expert A-level Physics tutors help students across Twickenham and the wider borough work from their own board's papers and keep their Physics and their Maths moving together, whichever sixth form they attend.
Which providers does this page cover, and where does the boundary sit?
This page uses the local authority, not a postcode. The Department for Education reports A-level results by local authority, and Twickenham is a town inside Richmond upon Thames, local authority 318, so the page covers the borough. We took every establishment that Get Information About Schools (GIAS) lists as open in that authority with an official sixth form on 16 October 2026: 21. Fifteen of them returned a 2024/25 GCE A-level Physics row to DfE, twelve with a published score and three withheld as c. The other six have no Physics row in that dataset when matched by URN: Hampton High, Strathmore School, The German School, The Royal Ballet School, The Swedish School and Thomas's College.
Six of the fifteen carry a TW1 or TW2 postcode — Orleans Park School, Radnor House Twickenham (GIAS name: Kneller Hall School), St Catherine's School, St Richard Reynolds Catholic High School, Turing House School and Waldegrave School. The other nine sit in Richmond, Ham, Hampton, Teddington, Barnes, East Sheen and East Molesey, all within the same borough.
A sixteenth provider belongs in a Twickenham family's picture, and its row is handled separately. Richmond upon Thames College, on Langhorn Drive in Twickenham, closed on 4 January 2023, and GIAS records HRUC (Harrow, Richmond & Uxbridge Colleges) as its successor by merger, registered at Park Road, Uxbridge, in the London Borough of Hillingdon. DfE files the Physics row under HRUC, so a query for local authority 318 cannot return it. Our Twickenham A-level Chemistry page uses the same sixteen.
Does the Physics line ask for as much Maths as the Maths A-level it sits on?
A-level Physics leans on Maths throughout. The trouble is that a family reading only the Physics line of a school's entry requirements can come away with a lower number than the same school's own Maths line asks for. The table sets the two side by side for the ten providers whose Physics entry requirements we could read, from each school's own page or booklet, read on 16 October 2026.

Source: each provider's own entry-requirements page or booklet, read on 16 October 2026. Grades are GCSE grades 9 to 1. Where a line names no Maths grade the cell says so.
Read the first three rows as a student with GCSE Maths grade 6 would. At St Richard Reynolds that student meets the Physics line, and the same booklet requires them to take the A-level Maths whose own line asks for 7. At Turing House the Physics line calls grade 6 essential and recommends A-level Maths, whose line asks for 7. At the college the Physics line asks 6-6 where the Maths line asks for 7. The documents put the two numbers on separate lines; how a school treats a student who falls between them is for its sixth-form office to say, and it is worth asking before applying rather than after.
The second group states the Maths requirement the other way round. The Physics line names no Maths grade, but the document requires A-level Maths, so the grade that matters sits on the Maths line: 7 at Orleans Park, 7 to 9 at Christ's, and 8 or 9 expected at the Harrodian. A family that reads Orleans Park's Physics line learns the GCSE Physics requirement and nothing about the Maths grade the course will also need.
Three providers set the same grade on both lines, so the Physics line understates nothing: Grey Court, Waldegrave and St Catherine's, all at 7. Lady Eleanor Holles School sits apart in a way that suits the same reading. Its sixth-form page asks for Grade 7 to take any subject at A level and then sets Grade 8 for both Mathematics and Physics, with Grade 9 strongly recommended, so there the Physics bar sits a full grade above the school's general one.
The table covers ten of the sixteen providers. It does not include Hampton School, Lift Richmond Park, Hampton Court House, St Paul's School or Teddington School, whose own documents we could not read for a Physics requirement, or Radnor House Twickenham, whose prospectus sets one rule across subjects rather than a Physics line. Where a provider has no row here, ask its sixth-form office for the Physics and Maths lines before comparing it with the others.
Starting Year 12 with a GCSE Maths grade a notch below the bar? Our expert A-level Physics tutors begin with the algebra, rearranging and trigonometry that Physics assumes, so the Maths A-level and the Physics A-level are not competing for the same first term.
How many Physics students here take Maths as well?
DfE's maths and science subject-combinations data counts students rather than entries, so it can answer this. For the Richmond upon Thames local authority it covers 933 students, and its figures reconcile to the eight state-funded schools — Christ's, Grey Court, Lift Richmond Park, Orleans Park, St Richard Reynolds, Teddington, Turing House and Waldegrave — rather than to the borough's independent schools or HRUC. Its 142 Physics students, for example, equal the sum of those schools' GCE A-level Physics exam entries on Compare (7, 20, 8, 38, 13, 21, 17 and 18).
Of those 142 students entered for A-level Physics at the eight state-funded schools in 2024/25, 140 also took A-level Maths, and 48 also took Further Maths. For almost every Physics student at those schools, then, the Maths grade is not a side issue: it is an admission to two subjects at once. The independent schools are not in this dataset, so it says nothing about the 74 Physics exam entries at Hampton School, for instance; there the pairing is known only where a school's own document states it, as the Harrodian's does.

Five of the ten name OCR, four name AQA and one teaches a Cambridge International course. OCR publishes two Physics A-levels, Physics A (H556) and Physics B, Advancing Physics (H557). Of the OCR schools, the three that link a specification link Physics A, while Waldegrave and the college say only OCR. OCR is withdrawing Physics B: its final first teaching is September 2026 and its final A-level assessment is June 2028. For a student on an OCR course, the code on the exam entry tells a tutor which papers to use, and our OCR A-level Physics and AQA A-level Physics guides set out how the specifications differ.
The table covers the ten providers whose own pages name a board or link a specification. It does not cover Hampton School, Lady Eleanor Holles School, Lift Richmond Park, Hampton Court House, Turing House School or St Richard Reynolds Catholic High School; for a student at any of those, the specification code printed on the exam entry settles which papers are used.
St Paul's School is the exception to everything above. Its own Physics page says that after GCSE it offers "the two-year Cambridge International A Level course", a different qualification from the GCE boards, and DfE's GCE tables show fewer than five Physics entries there against 76 in Chemistry on Compare. Our London A-level Physics page sets out what that route involves.
Our expert A-level Physics tutors work with students at Orleans Park, Grey Court, Waldegrave, Turing House, St Richard Reynolds and the other borough sixth forms, from the student's own board, mock papers and practical write-ups.
What do the 2024/25 Physics value-added figures show?
Value added compares a sixth form's Physics results with those of students nationally who started from the same GCSE results. These figures are DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality. A score is a finding only when its 95% interval sits wholly above or wholly below zero. The matched entries column counts the students DfE could match to a GCSE record; the exam entries column is Compare's count of everyone entered for GCE A-level Physics, and the two are different measures that differ slightly at two providers.

Source: DfE institution-level subject value added dataset, 2024/25, GCE A level, A-level cohort, Physics, queried 16 October 2026; exam entries from DfE's Compare school and college performance service, subjects entered at 16 to 18. Every figure is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality; the interval column reports only whether that row's own interval clears zero, never a comparison between rows. Sorted by matched entries, never by score. HRUC's row is described in the text and is not part of this table.
Two of the twelve published intervals sit wholly above zero: Hampton School at 0.33 (0.06 to 0.6) on 74 matched entries and Radnor House Twickenham at 1.34 (0.47 to 2.22) on 7. None sits wholly below. The other ten include zero, among them the second-largest cohort, Orleans Park's 38 matched entries, whose interval stops at -0.03. The two that clear zero differ enormously in size, and cohort size is why a score on seven entries has to be roughly 0.9 or more to clear zero, since an interval's half-width is about 2.3 divided by the square root of the entries: Radnor House's 1.34 clears, while Christ's 0.78 on the same seven does not.
The three withheld rows are St Catherine's School, Hampton Court House and St Paul's School. DfE withholds a score when a cohort is small, and Compare lists fewer than five GCE A-level Physics entries at each. A withheld row is not a low one.
The college's row needs its own paragraph. HRUC's 2024/25 Physics row reads 1.0 with an interval of 0.5 to 1.51 on 21 matched entries, and Compare lists 28 GCE A-level Physics exam entries for the institution. It is not a measurement of the Twickenham site. DfE files it under Hillingdon because it follows the merged college, so the row covers students of the whole merged college, across its Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge campuses, and the score says nothing about Langhorn Drive on its own. It is not in the table above, and it is not in any figure below. Read beside the twelve, it would look like a thirteenth borough school, which it is not.
What do the twelve published scores say when they are added together?
No single interval above is narrow enough to rank a school, but the twelve published rows can be combined. Multiply each score by its matched entries and the twelve products sum to 68.78; divided by the 252 matched entries, that is a pooled score of +0.27. The intervals combine the same way. Each half-width divided by 1.96 gives a standard error, and the pooled standard error is the square root of the sum of the squared weighted standard errors divided by the total. That gives a half-width of 0.15, so the pooled score is 0.27 with an interval of 0.13 to 0.42. Taken together, the twelve providers' Physics entries sit above the national average for students with the same GCSE results, even though ten of the twelve intervals cannot say so one at a time. Like every score on this page, the pooled one is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants worked through again, and it is not a measure of teaching quality.
That is our arithmetic from published rows, not a DfE statistic, and it describes the entries in these twelve rows; it says nothing about how well any one department teaches. Two checks support it. It does not rest on the two providers that clear zero: leave out Hampton School and Radnor House Twickenham and the other ten give +0.20 with an interval of 0.03 to 0.38 on 171 matched entries. And the method reproduces a case where DfE publishes the answer: North Bristol Post 16 Centre's own pooled row sits beside its two member schools, and across 23 subjects the same arithmetic matched DfE's score and interval to within 0.01 in every one.
Matched entries are not a head-count. The 252 are students DfE could match to a GCSE record, against 254 exam entries on Compare for the same twelve providers, and the pooled score is not a count of the borough's Physics students. HRUC's row, for the reasons above, is outside it.

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
How do we teach A-level Physics across these routes?
A student at Orleans Park, Grey Court or Waldegrave is working to OCR's papers, one at Teddington, the Harrodian, Radnor House or St Catherine's to AQA's, and one at St Paul's to Cambridge International's. We start from the specification a student is actually entered for and from their own mock papers and mark schemes, because that is where marks are being dropped, and we plan the Physics alongside the Maths the student is taking, since the same algebra, rearranging and trigonometry carry both. Our A-level Physics guide sets out the specifications, the practical endorsement and where students typically lose marks.
If your child is taking Physics with Maths, our A-level Maths tutors in Twickenham page covers the borough's Maths provision at the same schools.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GCSE Maths grade 6 enough to start A-level Physics at a Twickenham sixth form?
It depends on the sixth form, and on which line you read. St Richard Reynolds, Turing House and the college name grade 6 on the Physics line, but each sets grade 7 for A-level Maths, and St Richard Reynolds requires Physics students to take that Maths A-level. Grey Court, Waldegrave and St Catherine's name 7 on the Physics line itself, and Lady Eleanor Holles School sets Grade 8 in the subject. Ask the sixth-form office how it treats a student between the two lines before applying.
Which Twickenham-area sixth forms require A-level Maths alongside Physics?
From the documents we read, four: Orleans Park School, Christ's, St Richard Reynolds Catholic High School and the Harrodian School, which allows an exception if the Head of Physics gives permission. Turing House School recommends it. The other providers in the ten we could read, and those we could not read, may have their own practice, so confirm it with the school.
How many Physics students in the borough also take Maths?
At the eight state-funded schools in Richmond upon Thames, 140 of the 142 students entered for A-level Physics in 2024/25 also took A-level Maths, and 48 also took Further Maths, according to DfE's subject-combinations data. That dataset does not include the borough's independent schools or HRUC, so it is not a borough-wide figure.
How many of the borough's Physics value-added scores clear zero?
Two of the twelve published scores: Hampton School at 0.33 (0.06 to 0.6) and Radnor House Twickenham at 1.34 (0.47 to 2.22). None sits wholly below zero. The other ten intervals include zero. These are DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality. Combined by matched entries, our own arithmetic gives +0.27 with an interval of 0.13 to 0.42 across the twelve, which is an estimate from published rows and not a DfE figure.
Is HRUC's Physics score a Twickenham figure?
No. Richmond upon Thames College closed on 4 January 2023 and GIAS records HRUC as its successor by merger, registered in Hillingdon. HRUC's 2024/25 Physics value added is 1.0 with an interval of 0.5 to 1.51 on 21 matched entries, and it covers the whole merged college across its Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge campuses, so it is not a measurement of the Twickenham site on its own, and like every value-added score it is a progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
Which exam boards do the borough's sixth forms name for A-level Physics?
Five of the ten whose pages name a board or link a specification name OCR (Orleans Park, Christ's, Grey Court, Waldegrave and the college), four name AQA (Teddington, the Harrodian, Radnor House Twickenham and St Catherine's) and St Paul's teaches a Cambridge International course. OCR has two Physics A-levels, A and B, so the code on the exam entry is what settles the papers.
