A-level Chemistry in Twickenham is a sixth-form subject taught across sixteen providers in and around the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, fifteen registered in the borough and one filed under a neighbouring authority. All sixteen returned a 2024/25 Chemistry row to the Department for Education, fourteen with a published score. The largest cohort is St Paul's School, at 74 matched entries and 0.64. At no sixth form do both sciences produce a result distinguishable from the national average.

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students across Twickenham and the wider borough with the organic, inorganic and physical papers, whichever board their sixth form enters and whatever stage their practical record has reached.

This page covers the borough rather than the town alone, because the sixth forms a Twickenham family applies to are spread across it. Six of the fifteen carry a Twickenham address in the Department for Education's Get Information About Schools register — Waldegrave School, Orleans Park School, St Richard Reynolds Catholic High School, Turing House School, Kneller Hall School (which trades as Radnor House Twickenham) and St Catherine's School. The other nine sit in Barnes, Hampton, Ham, Teddington, Richmond, East Sheen and East Molesey. The sixteenth teaches in Twickenham but is registered in another local authority, and is dealt with below.

Which borough providers hold a Chemistry result clear of zero?

Parents reasonably treat "good at science" as one property of a school, and the borough's own 2024/25 figures do not support that. Setting the two sciences beside each other is worth doing because they are not equivalent in demand: Ofqual requires A-level chemistry to assess at least 20 per cent level 2 mathematics against 10 per cent for biology, which our A-level Chemistry page sets out along with the practical endorsement and the required practicals each board sets. The table below gives both subjects for all sixteen providers, and the sections after it work through what it shows.

Value added is the Department for Education's per-subject progress measure. It compares a student's result in one subject against the results of students nationally who began with the same prior attainment, so it already adjusts for how strong the intake was. Each score is published with a 95 per cent confidence interval and a count of matched entries, and the only sound reading of a single score is whether its interval lies entirely above or entirely below zero. If the interval crosses zero, the result is not distinguishable from the national average for that prior attainment, however large the headline number looks.

Where do Chemistry and Biology part company at the same sixth form?

Applying that test to both sciences at the same sixteen providers gives a clean result. Five providers have a Chemistry interval that excludes zero. Two providers have a Biology interval that excludes zero. They are not the same providers: at no sixth form in this borough do Chemistry and Biology both clear the bar, and nine of the sixteen have no result in either science that can be told apart from the national average.

How large does a Chemistry cohort have to be before the measure can say anything?

The caveat matters as much as the finding, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion. Cohort sizes differ between the two subjects at the same school, and the width of a confidence interval is governed by how many entries sit behind it. Across the published Chemistry rows in this borough, the half-width of the interval multiplied by the square root of the matched entries sits in a narrow band between 2.234 and 2.258. A sixteen-entry cohort therefore cannot produce a narrow interval however well the subject is taught, and a forty-six-entry cohort will produce a narrow one even if the teaching is ordinary. Teddington School's Chemistry interval spans zero on 16 matched entries while its Biology interval clears it on 32; that is a statement about how many students sat each subject at least as much as about the department.

So the finding is not that these schools teach one science better than the other, and none of these figures says anything about an individual student. It is that the measure separates the two subjects at seven of the sixteen providers and never points the same way twice at one school. A family choosing a sixth form on its science reputation is working from a figure that does not transfer between subjects.

What do the two withheld Chemistry rows turn out to be?

Two of the withheld rows resolve without guesswork. The Department for Education suppresses small cohorts, and its Compare school and college performance subject tables publish the entry counts the value-added table withholds: St Catherine's School entered 2 students for GCE A level Chemistry and Hampton Court House entered 3. Those are the cohorts behind the two letter c entries. One provider sits apart for the opposite reason — St Paul's School entered 76 students for GCE A level Chemistry in the same table, against 1 for Biology and 4 for Physics, so the borough's largest Chemistry cohort sits at a school whose Biology figure is withheld and whose sciences are not all entered by the same route.

One point of reconciliation, because the page prints two different kinds of count. The entry figures above come from the Compare subject tables and record every student entered for the qualification. The counts in brackets in the value-added table are matched entries, meaning only those students whose prior attainment the Department for Education could match to a national record. The two differ slightly and for an ordinary reason: St Paul's School shows 76 entered against 74 matched, Grey Court School 24 against 23, Orleans Park School 20 against 19, and St Richard Reynolds Catholic High School 17 against 16. Neither number is wrong, and a small gap of this kind is a fact about the intake rather than an error in the data.

Which provider teaches in Twickenham but files its results elsewhere?

The sixteenth provider is the one physically in Twickenham. Richmond upon Thames College closed as a separate institution on 4 January 2023, and Get Information About Schools records HRUC as its successor by merger, listing it at Park Road, Uxbridge, in the London Borough of Hillingdon; its 2024/25 Chemistry figure of 0.11 therefore covers the whole college across its Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge campuses rather than the Twickenham campus alone. What a local authority 318 query leaves out is that data row, not the establishment, which is still listed there as closed. On the college's own course pages, A-level Chemistry is OCR and A-level Biology is AQA — two different awarding bodies for the two sciences, in the same building.

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students at Waldegrave, Orleans Park, Turing House, St Richard Reynolds and the other borough sixth forms, working from the student's own board, their mock papers and the practical activities they still have to complete.

Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

How do we work from your child's own Chemistry specification and practical record?

The spread above is the reason our teaching starts from the specification a student is actually entered for rather than from a generic A-level Chemistry scheme. Across the borough the boards we found named for Chemistry were AQA 7405 at Christ's Church of England Comprehensive Secondary School and St Catherine's School, OCR at Waldegrave School, Grey Court School and Orleans Park School, OCR at the Twickenham campus of HRUC, and the OCR A syllabus at St Paul's School. The papers are weighted differently between those boards and the required practicals are not the same twelve, so past-paper practice on the wrong specification is close to wasted time.

Entry requirements vary in shape as well as in level. Five of the providers we read name a GCSE Mathematics grade inside their published Chemistry requirement — grade 5 at Orleans Park School, grade 6 at Grey Court School, Turing House School and Richmond upon Thames College, and grade 7 at St Catherine's School — while others run a whole-profile rule instead, as St Paul's School does in asking for eight (I)GCSE passes at grade 7 including the subjects to be taken at A level. Where a school does name a Maths grade it usually names the same one for Biology, as Turing House does, so this is the subject's mathematical demand showing through rather than a local rule aimed at Chemistry.

In practice our work runs along three lines. We start from the student's own mock papers and their school's mark scheme, because that is where marks are actually being dropped. We work through the practical write-ups alongside the theory, since the techniques the endorsement requires reappear in the written papers as calculation and as sources of error. And we are explicit about what the local data can and cannot tell a family: a sixth form's value-added figure describes a cohort of between 9 and 74 students in this borough and says nothing about any individual.

If your child is taking Chemistry alongside Biology, our A-level Biology tutors in Twickenham page sets out that subject's boards and entry requirements at the same schools, and our A-level Maths tutors in Twickenham page covers the borough's Maths provision.

Frequently Asked Questions

If a borough school is strong in Biology, does that mean its Chemistry is strong too?

Not in Richmond upon Thames. Five providers have a Chemistry value-added interval that excludes zero and two have a Biology interval that excludes zero, and no sixth form appears in both groups. Teddington School clears the bar in Biology and not in Chemistry; Waldegrave School clears it in Chemistry and not in Biology. Part of that is cohort size, because a 16-entry subject cannot produce a narrow interval, but the practical consequence for a family is the same: a school's reputation in one science is not evidence about the other.

Can my child's Chemistry board differ from their Biology board at the same school?

Yes, and in this borough it does. At HRUC's Richmond upon Thames College campus in Twickenham, the college's own course pages give A-level Chemistry as OCR and A-level Biology as AQA. Elsewhere in the borough the Chemistry boards named were AQA 7405 at Christ's and St Catherine's, OCR at Waldegrave, Grey Court and Orleans Park, and the OCR A syllabus at St Paul's. Check the subject page rather than a school's general curriculum page, because one sixth form can enter two sciences with two different awarding bodies.

Why is a school's Chemistry value added shown as the letter c?

Because the cohort was too small for the Department for Education to publish a figure. Two providers here are shown that way for Chemistry, and the entry counts behind them are published elsewhere in the same service: the Compare school and college performance subject tables list 2 GCE A level Chemistry entries at St Catherine's School and 3 at Hampton Court House. A suppressed row is not a poor result and should not be read as one. It means the number of matched entries fell below the threshold at which a score can be shown at all.

Whose figure is the HRUC Chemistry row, and which campus does it cover?

It covers the whole college. Richmond upon Thames College closed as a separate institution on 4 January 2023 and Get Information About Schools records HRUC as its successor by merger, listing it at Park Road, Uxbridge, in the London Borough of Hillingdon. Its 2024/25 Chemistry value added of 0.11, with an interval of -0.4 to 0.61 across 20 matched entries, therefore spans the Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge campuses together and is not a figure for the Twickenham site on its own. That interval includes zero.

Which borough sixth forms name a GCSE Maths grade for Chemistry?

Five of those we read. Orleans Park School names grade 5, Grey Court School grade 6, Turing House School grade 6, Richmond upon Thames College grade 6, and St Catherine's School grade 7. The spread matters more than any pattern: a student holding grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics meets Orleans Park's published bar and does not meet St Catherine's. Where a school names a Maths grade it often names the same one for Biology, as Turing House School does in the same table, so this is not a requirement aimed at Chemistry alone.

Which schools on this page are actually in Twickenham?

Six of the fifteen Richmond upon Thames providers carry a Twickenham address in Get Information About Schools: Waldegrave School, Orleans Park School, St Richard Reynolds Catholic High School, Turing House School, Kneller Hall School, which trades as Radnor House Twickenham, and St Catherine's School. HRUC teaches at Langhorn Drive in Twickenham but is registered in Hillingdon. The remaining nine sit in Barnes, Hampton, Ham, Teddington, Richmond, East Sheen and East Molesey, all within the same borough and all realistic options from Twickenham.
