The ESAT for 2027 entry is sat between 12 and 16 October 2026. Oxford Engineering Science interviews for the same cycle fall between Monday 14 and Thursday 17 December 2026, with overseas candidates possibly a week earlier. That is a different and later window than the one Oxford publishes for Physics, and what happens inside it is not a second sitting of the test.

Oxford’s course page is unambiguous: “All applicants must take the Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) as part of their application. All Oxford applicants must take the following three modules: Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics.” That is a requirement rather than a typical selection, and there is no module choice to get wrong.
The format bounds what the score can possibly tell Oxford. UAT-UK, which runs the test, states that each module “lasts 40 minutes and contains 27 multiple choice questions” and that the whole test “will be 120 minutes long for most candidates”. No calculator is allowed and no dictionary. There is no negative marking — “You do not lose marks for incorrect answers” — and each module is reported “on a scale from 1 (low) to 9 (high) to one decimal place”, with no pass mark and no published grade boundaries.
A multiple-choice module records the answer and nothing else. It does not see an assumption being named, a model being simplified, or a candidate changing their mind halfway through and saying why. That is not a flaw in the test; it is the boundary of the instrument, and it is the reason a second assessment exists in December.
Once sat, the score leaves your control. Results reach candidates “approximately four weeks after the test sitting”, but they reach Oxford separately and sooner: “Your results will be sent to any participating institutions included in your UCAS application. This happens automatically shortly after your test date.” There is no appeal. UAT-UK states that because the scoring process is quality assured at every stage, “we do not accept appeals of test scores”.
What is worth knowing is that Oxford does not then discard it. Its Engineering Science course page describes the interview and the score working together at the offer stage: “Enthusiasm for engineering combined with high ability in mathematics and physics is essential for those wishing to study any engineering course. These qualities will be tested at the interview and combined with an assessment of your predicted and attained examination performance (especially in mathematics and physics, and your ESAT score) to decide who will be offered places.” The interview supplements the score; it does not replace it or overturn it.
The department puts the same point more bluntly in its own FAQ: a strong predicted grade profile is not enough, because “you must also do well on the Engineering and Science Admissions (ESAT) test and attend an interview with an engineering tutor, who must be convinced by the end of it that the course is right for you”. Oxford’s published figures for Engineering Science, a three-year average across 2023 to 2025, record 37% of applicants interviewed and 15% successful, against an intake of 174.
Oxford publishes a course-by-course interview timetable. The row it labels Engineering reads: “Most interviews will take place on Monday 14, Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 December, and some interviews may take place on Thursday 17 December. Overseas candidates may have interviews in the week commencing Monday 7 December.”

Two details in that row repay attention. The first is the overseas provision: a candidate applying from outside the UK may be interviewed in the week commencing 7 December, a full week before most of the cohort, so an assumption built on the mid-December dates can be a week wrong. The second is that this is not the Physics window. Oxford lists Physics separately, at two colleges between 9 and 15 December, so a candidate weighing the two courses is looking at genuinely different diary entries.
The invitation arrives before any of it: “All applicants will receive a letter or email indicating whether or not they have been invited for interview, usually between the middle of November and early December.” On format, the University’s central guidance is current and explicit: “Shortlisted applicants will be invited to online interviews in December 2026.”
Ten engineering problems with the reasoning written out, not just the answer

The Department of Engineering Science publishes the shape of the day: “Candidates invited for interview will be seen at two colleges on the same day, usually one interview will take place in the morning and the other in the afternoon.” Both interviews are standard. Neither is a contingency, and a second-college interview is not a signal about the first.
The two are not the same length and do not do the same job. On the morning interview, the department writes: “The morning interview will last for about 30-45 minutes and will take place at your preferred college (and the one that you’ve been allocated). The interviewers will ask you to talk about why you’re interested in studying engineering and why you chose Oxford. You will also be asked some maths and physics questions, based on topics you’ve already covered at school.”
The afternoon is shorter and narrower: “The afternoon interview will take place at another college. It will last for about 30 minutes and may consist of the maths and physics questions only.”
That asymmetry is worth planning around. The motivation questions — why engineering, why Oxford — are asked in the morning, at the college you named or were allocated, inside a longer slot that also carries technical work. The afternoon may be technical from the first minute. A candidate who has rehearsed only one of those two shapes has prepared for half the day.
The Department of Engineering Science publishes what it wants an interview to demonstrate, in a document of its own hosted on the department site. “Candidates invited for interview should expect an academic or technical interview. They should be able to demonstrate: Fluency in expressing core knowledge and ideas in physics and mathematics. Ability to apply existing knowledge methodically to new situations. Ability to assimilate and apply new concepts. Rapidity in thinking and reasoning” — and, listed separately, “to be able to discuss their: Commitment to intense and sustained learning. Interest in and enthusiasm for the engineered world.”
The split in that list is doing real work. Four qualities are to be demonstrated, live, on a problem. Two are to be discussed. They are not interchangeable, and preparing for one does not prepare you for the other.
Now set the four demonstrable ones against what you did in October. Rapidity in thinking and reasoning is the quality the ESAT tests most directly: 27 questions in 40 minutes is a speed instrument by construction. Fluency in expressing ideas in physics and mathematics is only half-visible in a ticked box — the expressing is exactly the part that is not submitted. Applying existing knowledge methodically to new situations shows up in the answer but not in the method, and a correct answer cannot distinguish a method from a recognition. And the ability to assimilate and apply new concepts is not testable in the format at all, because a multiple-choice paper introduces no new concept and offers no help with one.
That last quality is the one December exists for, and Oxford says so in the same document, describing what an interviewer is doing when a candidate gets stuck: “Usually, the candidate has not covered all the material at school and help is provided by the interviewer to assess how quickly the candidate develops an understanding of the new idea.” The help is not a concession. It is the measurement.
The same document works one question in public, which makes it more useful than any reconstructed example. “The candidate is asked to consider the engineering design of a vertical faced gravity dam wall... This question is open-ended and allows the interviewer to engage in a dialogue with the candidate about what is involved in considering the problem. The issues that need to be addressed include the forces acting on the wall, which requires an understanding of mechanics (physics/maths).”
What makes it worth studying is not the dam. It is that Oxford then states what the question is for: “This question is designed to provide information covering the first four bullet points above and would provide an indication of the last bullet point.”
Read against the list, that is precise. One open-ended problem is expected to yield all four demonstrable qualities and an indication of enthusiasm for the engineered world, which is the last bullet. The fifth quality — commitment to intense and sustained learning — is not claimed for it, and the page will not claim it either. So a single technical problem is carrying most of the assessment, and the part it cannot reach is the part the morning conversation about motivation is there to cover.
The department’s own account of how the dam question escalates is a template for how to behave in any of them: identify the forces, which needs mechanics; discuss the weight of the wall, the water pressure and the line of action of the resultant force, “possibly leading to an integral if the candidate has covered the relevant mathematics”; then assess stability, with the interviewer prompting toward failure by sliding or overturning if nothing comes to mind. The level reached “will depend on the candidate’s responses as the discussion progresses”. Nobody is expected to arrive at the end unaided.
Oxford is unusually direct about preparation for this course, including about its limits. “The interview is a chance for us to see how good you are at understanding, developing and explaining new ideas — so it’s not a test of how much you know.” That sentence is quoted constantly without the one that follows it, which is the one that makes it usable: “However, the more background knowledge you have, the more you will be able to make use of this in the interview.” Knowledge is not the target, but it is the raw material.
On what to actually do: “The questions are all based on topics you will have covered at school, so you’re expected to have some familiarity with them — even if you haven’t covered them in a while! It’s worth looking back through your notes from school, but don’t try and cram for the interview.” Revisiting school material is endorsed. Cramming is specifically discouraged, by the people asking the questions.
The instruction candidates most often disbelieve is this one: “If you get stuck or are unsure about anything, it’s okay to ask your interviewer for help. That won’t count against you — you’re expected to need help at some point.” Taken with the assessment note above, asking is not damage limitation. Being helped is the condition under which the fourth quality can be observed at all.
For problem material, Oxford’s Department of Physics — not the engineering department — maintains a resource list that points engineering candidates somewhere specific: the “I want to study engineering” question bank, which it says “is just as useful for all applicants not just those applying to engineering”, directing readers to its “mathematics and physics questions at the level of university engineering admissions interviews”, indexed “into smaller groups of about 10-20 questions by topic”.
One last warning from the department, about the personal statement rather than the maths: “resist the temptation to exaggerate your interest or overstate your experiences. Your interviewer will probably ask you about the hobbies and work experience that you mention, and you’re sure to be found out!” The morning interview opens on motivation, so anything named on the form is live material.
