What your ESAT score does once it is sat, and what it stops doing

The Engineering and Science Admissions Test is the only written assessment in an Oxford Physics application. Oxford’s Department of Physics puts it without qualification: “Everyone who applies to study Physics or Physics and Philosophy at Oxford, without exception, must take the Engineering and Science Admissions Test, also known as the ESAT, a two-hour test that evaluates a student’s ability in both physics and maths.” Oxford applicants take three modules — Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics — and that combination is compulsory, not a recommended selection.

The format matters for what comes next. UAT-UK, which runs the test, states that each module “lasts 40 minutes and contains 27 multiple choice questions” and that the whole test “will be 120 minutes long for most candidates”. That is 27 answers per module, across three modules. No calculator is permitted and no dictionary. There is no negative marking: “Your final scores are based on the number of correct answers you give. You do not lose marks for incorrect answers.” Each module is reported separately “on a scale from 1 (low) to 9 (high) to one decimal place”, and there is no pass mark and no published grade boundary.

Read that list again from the point of view of what it can observe. The ESAT records which box you ticked, 27 times in each of three modules. It does not see the working, because none is submitted. It cannot tell a candidate who derived an answer from one who recognised it, and it cannot tell either of them from one who guessed, because guessing is explicitly costless. That is not a criticism of the test — it is a high-volume instrument doing a high-volume job — but it defines precisely what is left for December to establish.

The score then leaves your hands entirely. UAT-UK says results reach candidates “approximately four weeks after the test sitting”, but they reach the university earlier and independently: “Your results will be sent to any participating institutions included in your UCAS application. This happens automatically shortly after your test date.” Candidates cannot choose which institutions see a score, and there is no route to revisit one: “For this reason, we do not accept appeals of test scores.”

At Oxford the score has one function, and the Department of Physics names it: “The primary shortlisting criterion is the ESAT score, interpreted in the light of contextual data about candidates.” The scale of the cut is published too. With applicants per place “reaching typically 8-10”, the department shortlists “to reduce the number of interviewed candidates to around 2.5 per place (around 500 in total), which represent the maximum number of interviews the Department can provide”. Oxford’s own central figures for the Physics course record a three-year average across 2023 to 2025 of 31% of applicants interviewed and 11% successful, against an intake of 173.

So the score decides whether there is an interview at all, and then stands aside. It reappears exactly once more, at the end, which is the subject of the third section below.

Oxford Physics interview dates for 2027 entry: 9 to 15 December 2026

Oxford publishes a course-by-course interview timetable, and the Physics row for this cycle is specific: “Interviews at two colleges will take place between Wednesday 9 December and Tuesday 15 December.” That window is not shared across the sciences. The Engineering row on the same table gives a different and later span, and a candidate holding offers of interview in both subjects should read both rows rather than assuming one.

The invitation itself arrives in a defined window: “All applicants will receive a letter or email indicating whether or not they have been invited for interview, usually between the middle of November and early December.” The University’s central guidance confirms the format for this cycle in its own words: “Shortlisted applicants will be invited to online interviews in December 2026.” The Department of Physics says the same thing twice over on its admissions procedures page — “All interviews are virtual.”

The practical consequence of an online December is narrow but real. A candidate needs a quiet room and a working connection on a weekday inside a seven-day window, and the second of the two colleges interviews after the first has finished, so the two appointments are not necessarily adjacent. Oxford also undertakes to give at least 24 hours’ notice of any additional interview.

Three interviews, three marks out of 10: how Oxford Physics scores you after the test

Every shortlisted Physics candidate is interviewed three times, not twice. The Department of Physics sets out the arrangement in two steps. At the first college, “Candidates receive two interview marks from their first college. This is normally provided by two separate interviews, each marked out of 10, although in some cases colleges may give one long interview or three short interviews, and then marks are combined to give two final marks.” Then, separately: “All short-listed candidates are assigned to a second college, which is responsible for providing one (third) interview. This second college is chosen at random.” That third interview produces “one interview mark (out of 10)” and takes place after the first college’s interviews have concluded.

The department’s own admissions report says the same thing in a single sentence: “Every shortlisted candidate has two interviews given by a first-choice college and one interview given by a randomly allocated second-choice college. Each interview is marked out of 10 based on the academic judgement of the interviewing tutors.”

Two things follow that candidates routinely get wrong. The first is that the second college is not a consolation stage and not a signal of any kind — it is assigned to everybody, at random, before interviews begin. Its role is defined in advance: “If the first choice college is not able to offer a place to a candidate, the second college has first refusal on that candidate.” The second is that being moved between colleges earlier in the process carries no meaning either. In the 2025 admissions exercise, 90 applicants were reallocated to a different first-choice college at shortlisting, and the department states plainly that “Reallocation is not an indicator of the strength or weakness of an applicant”.

This is the point at which the ESAT reappears. “At the end of the interview process each candidate is assigned a numerical total score calculated from the ESAT score and interview scores, moderated by contextual information.” Oxford is careful about the standing of that number: it “is used to rank all applicants, but as the score does not incorporate all relevant information (such as examination results, references, and personal statements) this rank is not used as an absolute admission criterion.”

The ranking sorts candidates into three bands. “Band A, approximately the top 100 candidates; band B, approximately the next 200 candidates; and band C, candidates ranked below band B. Each year there are slightly over 200 offers made in total. Normally, almost all band A candidates are offered a place while rather few band C candidates will be offered a place.” Because every college can see every applicant through a central database, an offer need not come from either college that interviewed you: candidates “can receive an offer of a place from any college, including colleges which did not interview them”.

What a 6, a 7 and an 8 actually mean on an Oxford Physics interview mark

Oxford Physics publishes an annual report on its admissions exercise, and it is unusually direct about what its own marks mean. From the report on the 2025 exercise, for entry in 2026: “The scale is such that a mark of 6 broadly corresponds to ‘acceptable’, 7 corresponds to ‘good’, and an average interview mark of 8 or higher will likely result in an offer. Approximately 1% of interviews are scored as ‘10’.”

Those are narrow margins, and the report gives the distribution around them. In that exercise, “For applicants offered a place, the average interview mark this year was 7.95 (8.00 in 2024)”. A tenth of a mark separates the two cycles. It is worth saying what that does not mean: it is an average across three interviews, not a threshold any single interview has to clear.

Which brings the most useful sentence in the whole document. “While most of the accepted applicants have three good interviews (at least as viewed by the interviewers), 71 accepted applicants had one interview which scored less than a 7, and 9 accepted applicants had one interview which scored below 6.” The qualifier is the whole point: these are candidates with one weak mark out of three who were accepted anyway. One interview that goes badly is a recoverable event in this system, by design, because no single interview is decisive on its own.

And candidates are poor witnesses to their own performance. The department is explicit: “It is very hard for applicants to assess their own interview performance and we know from conversations with accepted students that it is extremely common for applicants to think that interviews which have gone well — even very well — have gone badly.” If you come out of an interview on 10 December convinced it collapsed, the published evidence is that you are not in a position to know.

These figures describe the 2025 exercise, which was run on the PAT rather than the ESAT. The interview structure they describe — two marks from a first college, one from a random second, each out of 10 — is word for word what the department’s current admissions procedures page still sets out, so the mechanism carries into this cycle even though the test in front of it has changed.

The five things a Physics interview is assessed against, and why the ESAT could only reach two of them

Oxford’s Department of Physics publishes the criteria its interviews are marked against, in a mock interview pack written by the department’s Access Officer and last changed on 22 November 2021. “The interviews are assessed against our Admissions Criteria, which are what we are looking for in potential students. These are: Motivation: a real interest and strong desire to learn physics. Ability to express physical ideas using mathematics; mathematical ability. Reasoning ability: ability to analyse and solve problems using logical and critical approaches. Physical intuition: an ability to see how one part of a physical system connects with another; and to predict what will happen in a given physical situation. Communication: ability to give precise explanations both orally and numerically.”

Set those five against three modules of multiple-choice answers. Mathematical ability and reasoning ability are partly visible in a right answer, and that is the part the ESAT is built to measure at scale. Physical intuition is visible only in fragments: a correct box tells you the prediction was right and nothing about whether the candidate saw why. Motivation and communication are not observable in the format at all. Oxford does not ask a single question about either in October, which is why it needs three conversations in December.

The department’s page on interviews explains what that conversation assumes you bring: “Admissions interviews for the Department of Physics are purely academic in nature and, while there is no formal syllabus, knowledge of the entrance test syllabus material will be assumed.” The ESAT syllabus, in other words, is the floor of the interview rather than its content. Oxford’s central statement of what it wants from a Physics candidate is the same idea in different words: tutors look for “the ability to apply basic principles to unfamiliar situations” and for “the ability to formulate a problem in mathematical terms and then extract the physical consequences from the solution”.

Communication is the criterion most often left out of preparation, and it is the one the mark scheme names last and most concretely: precise explanations, orally and numerically. The department’s own advice is to make the reasoning physically visible — “It’s often a good idea for the student to write things down while they are explaining their thinking. The more they explain their thinking, the better.”

What to do in the weeks between the ESAT and 9 December

Oxford Physics names its own recommended material, which is a better starting point than a reading list assembled from anywhere else. The most counter-intuitive item is the retired test. The department states: “The ESAT is now required for admission to Physics, however, you may find the PAT (Physics Admissions Test) past papers helpful for preparation for interviews.” It still hosts those papers. The PAT is no longer the admissions test and cannot be sat, but as a source of longer, working-led physics problems it is exactly the shape of thing an interview asks for, and Oxford says so.

Alongside them the department points to the British Physics Olympiad archive, naming the papers by level: “You might want to look at the following papers; Senior Physics Challenge (set in Y12) and Physics Challenge (set early in Y13).” It recommends Isaac Science for problem-solving practice, and a set of conceptual questions designed to be answered without much arithmetic. It also sends Physics applicants somewhere they would not think to look: the “I want to study engineering” question bank, which “is just as useful for all applicants not just those applying to engineering”, and specifically its “mathematics and physics questions at the level of university engineering admissions interviews”.

Two smaller points from the department’s own pack are worth knowing before the day. “The interview could last around 20-30 minutes.” And “There are often two interviewers in the interview, though there may be more. They want the student to feel relaxed so they may start with a general non-academic question, or maybe something based on the student’s personal statement, though equally they may jump straight in with an academic question.”

On the personal statement, the department sets a clear expectation about proportion: “You are likely to spend the great majority of your time talking about physics or mathematics, rather than about any wider interests you may have mentioned in your personal statement. Interviewers may, however, choose to ask you about specific topics you have mentioned, so please ensure that you are familiar with any topics you have mentioned.” That is not an instruction to prepare a statement defence; it is an instruction not to have named anything you cannot discuss.
