Oxbridge Interview December Clash School Exams: Fourteen Countries Checked

Oxford and Cambridge interview in the same fortnight, 7 to 18 December 2026. Abroad, the question is what else falls inside it: a school exam, a results day or a public holiday. Across fourteen countries the answer runs from nothing (Singapore’s A-Levels end on 27 November) to exams on every school day of week one (UAE Ministry-curriculum schools). Cambridge accepts an exam as a reason on its application form. Oxford says it is not possible to rearrange.

This page is the country check and the decision that follows it. Every row names the students it applies to, because in several countries a date binds one kind of school and leaves the school down the road untouched.

What does each university do about a clash?

Cambridge publishes its rule in one sentence. On its interviews page it says it cannot reschedule interviews unless under exceptional circumstances, and that these may include unavoidable commitments such as hospital appointments or illness, religious observance or exams. It then builds the same rule into the application. Question 8.1 of My Cambridge Application asks whether you will be available for interview during the first 3 weeks in December; if you answer that you will not, question 8.2 asks for the dates and the reason. Cambridge gives examples of reasons it accepts — hospital appointments or illness, religious observance, exams — and of events it says it cannot usually schedule around: holidays, sports matches and concert rehearsals. The explanation field takes 300 characters.

For Cambridge, then, the useful question is not how inconvenient a date is but what kind of date it is. A national exam, your school’s own end-of-term paper or a resit sitting is the category Cambridge names and accepts. A family holiday, a fixture or a concert is the category it names and refuses. Cambridge is equally plain about the alternative: if you do not attend your interview, you will not be considered for a place. Most invitations are sent in November and some in early December, which is why an exam date you already know belongs in the application, not in an email after the invitation arrives.

The College, not the university, runs the interview, and one published College policy narrows the rule for a particular request. King’s College interviews every applicant in person in Cambridge, whether they are based in the UK or overseas. It will consider a remote interview for an exceptional reason, but among the reasons it says will not be considered sufficient is “scheduling conflicts (including conflicts with school timetabling and/or exams)”. A King’s applicant who cannot travel must say so on the King’s College Applicant Form, due by 5:00 pm UK time on 4th November 2026 — about five weeks before interviews begin. Emmanuel, also in person, runs its interview period from Monday 7 to Wednesday 16 December, two days shorter than the university’s.

Oxford’s position is shorter. Its interview guidance says the extensive logistics involved mean it is not possible to rearrange the time of interviews, and its timetable warns that candidates may be asked to attend interviews outside of the timeframes given. Oxford may give only a week’s notice that you have been shortlisted, and it aims to give a minimum of 24 hours’ notice of additional interviews. Oxford’s interview pages offer no way to declare a clash. One Oxford college, Corpus Christi, publishes an interview policy that schedules overseas candidates between early morning and late evening in their home time zone and adds that rescheduling interviews is not guaranteed — one college’s published policy, not the university’s.

Why can’t you plan around Oxford’s first-interview dates?

Because the first interview is not always the last one. Oxford publishes its interview timetable as 48 course rows, and each row has three parts: when most pre-organised interviews take place, the time by which you will be told about additional interviews, and the days those additional interviews can fall on. Oxford gives those times in UK time (GMT). Read only the first part and many courses look finished by the end of week one. Read the whole row and 34 of Oxford’s 48 course windows span Saturday 12 December once additional interviews are counted. Eight finish on or before that Saturday and six start after it. No single course’s window covers the whole of 7–18 December, but for those 34 courses the window reaches into both weeks.

Law is the clean case: every interview it publishes, first and second college, is over by Friday 11 December. History sits at the other end. A History applicant with a school exam on Tuesday 15 December will not know until 11am UK time on Monday 14 December whether that day is free, and History's second-college interviews start that same Monday. English and PPE tell applicants by Thursday 10 December and then run second-college interviews into week two. For an applicant abroad the notification time is also a UK time, so a deadline of 11am in Oxford arrives in the afternoon or evening across Asia and before dawn in the Americas.

The practical rule follows directly. If you have a fixed exam anywhere in 7–18 December, read your course’s whole row, not the first column, and tell your school’s exams officer about every date in it. Which countries have something inside 7–18 December 2026?

The table below is built from each country’s own ministry, examination board, admissions service or school calendar. Read the second column first: it says who the row applies to, and in the UAE and Thailand the answer changes with the school.

The UAE: one country, two calendars

The Ministry of Education’s 2026–27 calendar is headed “For public and private schools following the UAE Ministry of Education curriculum”. In those schools the end-of-term exams open on 25–27 November, pause for the National Day holiday on 2–4 December, and continue from 7 to 11 December. The calendar’s month grid gives December six school days; only five fall inside the interview fortnight, and all five are exam days. From 14 December students are on winter break, and the same week, 14–18 December, is set aside for make-up exams for Term 1, which binds a student who missed a paper. For this cohort the UAE is the heaviest clash of the fourteen countries. One caveat cuts the other way: the Ministry’s own school-leaving certificate is “Not accepted” by Oxford, and Cambridge says that on its own it is unlikely to be successful, so the cohort most tightly bound by these exam weeks cannot rely on that certificate alone.

Most Dubai private schools do not follow the Ministry curriculum. KHDA requires every private school in Dubai to abide by the government calendar’s start and end of year and its winter, spring and summer break holidays, and lists the winter break as starting on Monday 14 December 2026 for all schools. It does not impose the Ministry’s exam days. For a British, IB, American or Indian-curriculum student in Dubai, 7–11 December is an ordinary school week and 14–18 December is holiday. Abu Dhabi’s winter-break date was not verified for this page, so do not assume 14 December there.

Australia: results, not exams

Year 12 exams are over before the fortnight begins; the NSW HSC written exams finish no later than 5 November 2026. What lands inside it is results. Victorian students can see VCE results and their ATAR from 7.00 am on 10 December 2026. NSW HSC results are released on Wednesday 16 December, and UAC releases NSW and ACT ATARs at 9:00 am the same day. Queensland ATARs are released on 18 December 2026. The same day, UAC releases IB Admissions Scores for NSW and ACT students at 10:00 am and closes preference changes for December Round 2 offers at 11:59 pm, while VTAC releases IB notional ATARs in Victoria at 9am. Each time is the agency’s own, in its own time zone.

None of these is an exam, and none is a reason Cambridge’s form lists. It is a day you will want for a university preference list, and it may also be an interview day. Decide in advance who checks the result and when, so that an interview that morning gets your attention rather than your phone.

South Korea: scores on the 11th, and possibly a Korean interview

The CSAT was sat on 19 November 2026 and KICE notifies scores on 11 December, inside week one. The early-admission round then runs to its own deadline. The 2027 admissions rules announced by the Ministry of Education set the susi selection period from 12 September to 17 December 2026 — the window in which Korean universities run their own interviews and tests — and require first-round results by 18 December. A student applying through susi as well as to Oxbridge may therefore meet a Korean university’s own test or interview inside the fortnight. A written test is an exam in Cambridge’s terms and belongs in question 8.2; an interview is not on Cambridge’s list, so explain it as an unavoidable commitment and expect the College to decide. For Oxford, either is a clash to plan around.

The USA: no national answer

The easiest error here is to write a national rule. The ACT’s December national test date is Saturday 12 December, inside the fortnight. The College Board’s December SAT is Saturday 5 December, before it, and its dates apply to US and international test-takers alike. School exams depend on the district. Gwinnett County in Georgia runs high-school early release for exams on 16–18 December, inside week two. New York City schools close for winter recess from 24 December and hold Regents exams from 26 to 29 January. A US applicant has to check their own school’s calendar; no national rule covers it.

Thailand: the school decides

Thailand shows why every row needs a cohort. In state schools, Monday 7 December (the substitute holiday for 5 December) and Thursday 10 December (Constitution Day) are official holidays, as a state-school district calendar for 2026–27 lists them; the rest of December is term time. Two British international schools in Bangkok keep a different calendar. Shrewsbury International is closed on Monday 7 December, lists no closure on 10 December, and ends Term 1 on Friday 18 December. Bangkok Patana marks 7 December as a public holiday in lieu, lists nothing on the 10th, and ends Term 1 on 18 December. No national exam falls in the window for either group, so the only question is whether an interview lands on a school day.

Hong Kong, Malaysia and South Africa

Hong Kong’s JUPAS application period closes at 5:00 pm on 2 December 2026, before the fortnight. HKEAA’s HKDSE calendar puts one date inside it, and only for some candidates: anyone who applied for late entry or a subject amendment between 16 November and 4 December must pay by 11:59 pm on 8 December. It is a payment deadline, not an exam.

In Malaysia the only exam dates inside the fortnight belong to STPM candidates re-sitting papers. Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia runs the Semester 1 resit on 30 November and 1, 2, 3 and 7 December, and the Semester 2 resit on 10, 14, 15, 16 and 17 December. Malaysia’s SPM timetable was not verified for this page and is not stated here.

South African public-school learners finish Term 4 on 9 December under the national school calendar, so 7, 8 and 9 December are school days, and Wednesday 16 December is the Day of Reconciliation public holiday.

Singapore, Canada, India, China, Nigeria and Pakistan

Singapore is the clear case. SEAB’s 2026 A-Level timetable ends with Physics Paper 1 on the morning of 27 November, and MOE puts JC2 students on vacation from the end of the A-Levels to 31 December. Under Cambridge’s question 8.2 there is nothing to declare, and nothing needs to be. No Canadian collision was found either: in Alberta, for example, the November diploma exams end on Friday 6 November and the January session starts on Thursday 14 January.

For Class 12 applicants in India no collision was found, and the CBSE date sheet for 2027 has not been published, so no February date is quoted here. For China nothing is centrally published inside the window, and for Nigeria no collision was found. Pakistan’s HSSC second-annual date sheet was unpublished when this page was checked. Treat that as unknown, not as clear.

How do you raise a clash with Cambridge?

1. Name the category. An exam, a resit sitting or a religious observance is a reason Cambridge lists. A results day, a holiday or a sports fixture is not, and Cambridge says it cannot usually schedule around holidays.
2. Declare it in the application. In My Cambridge Application, answer question 8.1 with “I will not be available on one or more of the dates”, then give the dates and the reason in question 8.2. You have 300 characters, so write the exam, the date and the fact that the date is fixed — for example, the board, the paper and the day, and that your school cannot move it.
3. Read your College’s own page. In-person Colleges publish their own routes. King’s asks for any inability to travel on its Applicant Form by 5:00 pm UK time on 4th November 2026, and lists exam clashes among the reasons it will not accept for a remote interview.
4. If a clash appears after you applied, tell the College straight away. A resit date confirmed in November is still an exam; a Korean university interview is an unavoidable commitment you can explain. Either way it is a request, not an entitlement, so send the evidence with it.
5. Keep January open. Cambridge’s winter pool interviews run around mid to late January 2027, and a pooled applicant can be interviewed again.

What if the clash is with Oxford?

Oxford will not move the interview, so the other commitment has to move or be managed. Three routes cover most cases. If the exam is set by your own school — a mock or an internal end-of-term paper — ask the school, because a school can move its own paper and Oxford’s timetable does not move. If it is a national exam on a fixed date, read your course’s whole timetable row, first and additional interviews, and warn your school’s exams officer about every date in it before the invitation arrives, since shortlisting may come with a week’s notice. If it is a results release, decide beforehand who checks it and when.

Oxford interviews online, which removes travel from the calculation but not the clock: every time in its timetable is UK time. An afternoon interview in Oxford can fall after midnight on your own clock, which moves it onto your next local day — possibly the day of an exam.
