Almost every guide to Oxbridge physics interviews is written for a candidate who has done UK A-Level Physics. That candidate has met simple harmonic motion and the Young modulus, so a guide can treat them as shared ground and move straight to technique. A HKDSE candidate has met neither. Other topics are there but under a different name, which is its own kind of trap. The gap is not about ability or effort; it is a difference between two published syllabuses, and it is entirely knowable in advance.
We read the EDB/CDC–HKEAA Curriculum and Assessment Guide for Physics end to end rather than skim its topic list. Simple harmonic motion is not in it. Nor is pendulum, Hooke’s law, restoring force, damping or resonance: not as a compulsory topic, not as an extension topic, not inside any of the four electives. The compulsory part is five strands, and oscillations is not one of them.
That matters because a physics interviewer reaches for oscillations constantly. A mass on a spring, a ball rolling in a bowl, a molecule in a lattice, a child on a swing: each is a one-line route from an everyday object to a differential equation, which is exactly the kind of question an interview is built on. A UK candidate recognises the shape immediately. A HKDSE candidate who has never been shown it can still reason it out, but will spend the first two minutes deriving what the other candidate recognised on sight.

Every candidate takes the same five compulsory strands: Heat and Gases; Force and Motion; Wave Motion; Electricity and Magnetism; and Radioactivity and Nuclear Energy. Beyond that, the guide says candidates study any two of four electives — Astronomy and Space Science, Atomic World, Energy and Use of Energy, and Medical Physics — and schools choose. Two of those four areas are therefore missing from your physics, and which two is a decision made by your school, not by you.
No competitor guide can tell you which. That is the practical reason to write them down before you prepare rather than after: your own preparation list is different from the candidate sitting next to you in the same class year, and completely different from the UK candidate the standard guides are written for. If your school did not teach Atomic World, for instance, you have not met the guide’s single mention of quarks, which appears there as a historical aside about the structure of nucleons.
There is a second layer of variation inside the compulsory part itself. The guide splits it into a core component and an extension component, and says openly that some students are better served concentrating on the core. If your school took that route, some of the more demanding compulsory material is also missing. An interviewer will not know this, and will not ask. You should know it.
The 2027 HKDSE Physics Assessment Framework sets Paper 1, on the compulsory part, at 60 per cent of the subject mark across two hours thirty minutes. Within that paper, Section A is multiple-choice and carries 21 per cent of the subject mark; Section B, with short questions, structured questions and an essay, carries 39 per cent. Paper 2 covers the electives at 20 per cent, with each elective worth 10 per cent, and school-based assessment makes up the final 20 per cent.
Those figures are worth stating precisely because the commonly repeated version is wrong. It is HKDSE Mathematics whose compulsory Paper 2 is 35 per cent and entirely multiple-choice; Physics is not. Getting this right changes the diagnosis. A HKDSE physicist has written extended answers and one essay under exam conditions, and, if they sat as a school candidate rather than a private one, has done assessed practical work. What they have rarely done is argue a physics problem out loud while someone interrupts, and that is the actual difference an interview exposes.
The framework also states its own mathematical assumption in one sentence: the skills required are mainly based on those covered in the Compulsory Part of the HKDSE Mathematics Curriculum. A candidate may take that Compulsory Part alone, or add M1 Calculus and Statistics or M2 Algebra and Calculus. If you took the Compulsory Part only, your physics has been built without calculus by design. That is not a deficiency in an interview — plenty of good answers involve no calculus at all — but a question phrased as a rate of change needs a translation step first, and translation is faster with practice. Oxford’s published timetable places Physics and Physics and Philosophy between Wednesday 9 and Tuesday 15 December 2026. The full Oxford interview fortnight runs Monday 7 to Friday 18 December, and Oxford says candidates may be asked to attend outside the published timetable, so the Physics window tells you where to concentrate but not what to keep free. Cambridge runs its main interview period across the same fortnight, with winter pool interviews around mid to late January 2027.
Two Oxford statements deserve reading together. The first is that you may only be given a week’s notice of being shortlisted. The second is that the extensive logistics involved mean it is not possible to rearrange the time of interviews. Cambridge is more flexible, saying it cannot reschedule except in exceptional circumstances, and naming religious observance or exams among them. For a Hong Kong candidate, that asymmetry is the practical difference between the two universities in December.

Oxford interviews for 2027 entry are entirely online, on Microsoft Teams, with three technology tiers. The third tier calls for a touchscreen and stylus, which bears on Physics more than on most subjects. Oxford is explicit that no candidate or their school will be expected to purchase a touchscreen device, so the sensible step is to test what you already have, early, rather than buying anything.
Rehearse the hard slot, not the comfortable one
A 09:00 UK interview is 17:00 in Hong Kong and needs no adjustment at all. A 17:00 UK interview is 01:00 the next morning, and almost nobody has ever reasoned aloud about physics at that hour. Practising once at the time you might actually be interviewed is worth more than another hour of content revision.

In the 2025 cycle Cambridge received 574 applications from Hong Kong, made 109 offers and admitted 82 students: a success rate of 14.3 per cent. Across all non-UK applicants the figures were 8,300 applications, 1,221 offers and 890 acceptances, a rate of 10.7 per cent, against 19.6 per cent for UK applicants from 14,213 applications and 3,672 offers.
Two things follow. Overseas success is roughly half the UK rate, measured like for like in a single document and a single cycle; and Hong Kong sits comfortably above the overseas average. Oxford publishes only a three-year aggregate by country and states that UK-domiciled applicants are substantially more likely to receive an offer, without giving a per-country rate. No Oxford success rate for Hong Kong exists, and any figure you see quoted as one has been constructed.
Scale is worth holding in mind too. Oxford runs in the region of 20,000 online interviews in a December fortnight, from roughly 23,000 applications for about 3,300 places. At Cambridge, around 18 per cent of applications made in October 2025 went into the winter pool, and in January 2026 some 1,060 pooled applicants — about one in four of those pooled — were offered a place by a different College. Being pooled is not a verdict.
The order below is not a generic revision plan. It is derived from the specific difference between the HKDSE Physics guide and what a UK-trained interviewer is likely to assume, with the largest and most frequently used gap first.

Two further points sit outside the table. Cambridge recommends that, at the point of application, your English is equivalent to at least IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no element below 6.0 in order to take part in an interview; Oxford sets no pre-interview bar and never says the interview assesses English. And Oxford’s code of conduct requires candidates not to record the interview, not to let anyone observe it, and not to use any assistive technology, including artificial intelligence and automatic transcription tools. Oxford states that candidates will be at serious risk of having any offer withdrawn if they do not abide by it.

No. The EDB/CDC–HKEAA Curriculum and Assessment Guide for Physics contains no simple harmonic motion anywhere: no pendulum, no Hooke’s law, no restoring force, no damping and no resonance. Its compulsory part is Heat and Gases; Force and Motion; Wave Motion; Electricity and Magnetism; and Radioactivity and Nuclear Energy, and none of those five strands contains an oscillations topic. UK A-Level Physics treats simple harmonic motion as core, and interviewers reach for it because it is the shortest route from a spring to a differential equation. This is the single largest gap a HKDSE physicist carries into an Oxbridge interview, and the first thing to repair.
Two more absences matter, and one case that only looks like one. The Young modulus and stress–strain behaviour do not appear, so questions that start “why does this wire stretch?” begin from nothing. The diffraction grating is a different case, and worth knowing about: the physics is there, but the guide calls it the plane transmission grating and gives the equation as d sin θ = nλ, so a candidate who has learnt it may not recognise the UK name for it. Particle physics is not in the compulsory part at all: the word quark occurs exactly once in the guide, as a historical aside inside the optional Atomic World elective, and lepton does not occur at all. AQA’s A-Level, by contrast, teaches quarks and leptons as a named core topic.
More than the named absences, because the elective part is a choice. Candidates study the five compulsory strands plus any two of four electives: Astronomy and Space Science, Atomic World, Energy and Use of Energy, and Medical Physics. Whichever two your school did not teach are simply not in your physics, and which two varies from school to school. Before you prepare, write down which two you took. The other two are content an interviewer may assume a physicist has met, and neither you nor a generic preparation guide can know which they are.
Oxford’s published timetable puts Physics and Physics and Philosophy between Wednesday 9 and Tuesday 15 December 2026, inside the wider interview fortnight that runs Monday 7 to Friday 18 December. Cambridge’s main interview period is the same fortnight, 7 to 18 December 2026, with winter pool interviews around mid to late January 2027. Oxford states that candidates may be asked to attend outside the published timetable, and that you may get only a week’s notice of being shortlisted, so the whole fortnight has to be kept free rather than only the Physics window.
Cambridge asks, and Oxford does not. For 2027 entry Cambridge added a question to the interview section of its application asking what country and time zone you will be in during the first three weeks of December, and its own worked example reads: if you plan to be in China, Singapore, Hong Kong or Malaysia, select UTC +8. Cambridge says it collects this so that it can try to schedule online interviews at an appropriate time for applicants and interviewers. Oxford publishes nothing about time zones and states only that its timetable is in UK time. In December the UK is on GMT, so a 09:00 UK slot is 17:00 in Hong Kong and a 17:00 UK slot is 01:00 the following morning.

In the 2027 HKDSE Physics framework, Paper 1 on the compulsory part carries 60 per cent of the subject mark, and its Section A multiple-choice questions account for 21 per cent of the subject mark; Paper 2 on the electives carries 20 per cent and school-based assessment the remaining 20 per cent. HKDSE Mathematics is the paper that is 35 per cent pure multiple-choice. An Oxbridge interview asks for the opposite: a spoken argument with the reasoning left audible. The repair is rehearsal out loud, not more content.
HKEAA states it plainly: the mathematical skills required in the assessment are mainly based on those covered in the Compulsory Part of the HKDSE Mathematics Curriculum. A candidate may take that Compulsory Part alone, or add one of two Extended Part modules, M1 Calculus and Statistics or M2 Algebra and Calculus.
