Every specification code matters here, because it changes what a family should actually check. Pearson publishes exactly one live Combined Science specification — 1SC0, with no second edition running alongside it. Its own qualifications page lists a single "Combined Science" tab next to separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics tabs, and no variant name appears anywhere across the specification document itself (checked 7 September 2026). That is worth stating plainly because it is not true of every science GCSE on every board, and a family switching from a marketplace listing that talks about "combined science" in general terms has no way to know whether they are reading about the qualification their child is actually sitting.

The Six Papers That Make Up Edexcel Combined Science (1SC0)

1SC0 is assessed across six written papers, split evenly across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Every paper is worth 60 marks and 16.67% of the qualification, and every paper is a written examination lasting 1 hour and 10 minutes — there is no separate practical exam and no coursework component within these six papers.

Each paper is set at Foundation or Higher tier, and Pearson builds 16 of the 60 marks on every paper as overlap questions common to both tiers — the same questions appear on the Foundation and Higher versions of that paper. That overlap is what lets a school move a borderline student between tiers relatively late, since a meaningful share of every paper is identical regardless of which tier they eventually sit.

How Is Edexcel Combined Science Actually Graded?

The single most misunderstood part of this qualification is that it is graded and certificated on a 17-grade scale from 9-9 down to 1-1, using the total mark across all six papers — individual papers are not graded on their own. That produces a double grade, such as "6-6" or "5-4", rather than the single number a separate GCSE like Biology awards. A school report that shows "Combined Science: 6-6" means one qualification worth two GCSE grades, both derived from the same 360-mark total, not two independently examined subjects.

Tier sets the range of grades a candidate can reach. Foundation tier covers grades 1-1 up to 5-5; Higher tier covers grades 4-4 up to 9-9, with one exception — Pearson allows a grade of 4-3 to be awarded on Higher tier when a candidate's mark falls a small number of marks short of the 4-4 boundary. That 4-3 grade functions as a safety net: a Higher-tier candidate who narrowly misses the pass-equivalent standard is not automatically dropped to the bottom of the scale, but there is no grade below 4-3 available on Higher tier at all — a Higher candidate who falls further short receives a U.

Because the mark is combined across all six papers before a grade is set, a weak result on one paper can still be recovered elsewhere in the same tier. A student who under-performs on a single Chemistry paper is not marked down on "Chemistry" as a separate outcome; their mark simply contributes less to the 360-mark total that determines the double grade. That has a practical consequence for revision: because the papers are combined rather than graded individually, targeted work on a candidate's weakest paper affects the same overall total as work on their strongest, so tutoring time is best spent wherever the mark is easiest to move, not necessarily on the subject a student says they find hardest. What Marks Did 1SC0 Need for Each Grade in June 2026?

Pearson published its June 2026 grade boundaries for 1SC0 alongside every other GCSE. Out of a maximum 360 marks across the six papers, Foundation tier's top available grade, 5-5, needed 231 marks, and grade 4-4 needed 194 marks. On Higher tier, the top grade, 9-9, needed 282 marks; grade 4-4 needed 108 marks; and the 4-3 safety-net grade needed 99 marks.

Line up the two tiers on the single grade both can reach, 4-4, and the difference is stark: Foundation tier needed 194 out of 360 marks — 194 ÷ 360 = 0.539, or 53.9% — while Higher tier needed only 108 out of 360 — 108 ÷ 360 = 0.300, or 30.0%. That is an 86-mark gap on the same paper set, and a 23.9-percentage-point gap in the proportion of the paper a candidate needed to get right.

That gap is not evidence that Higher tier is "easier" to pass. Foundation and Higher are different populations, not the same cohort marked on different curves: the Higher paper contains harder content overall, so a Higher candidate can score a lower percentage of the total and still demonstrate the additional knowledge the tier is designed to test. The two figures answer different questions — "how much of the Foundation paper" against "how much of the harder Higher paper" — and treating them as directly comparable is the mistake, not the boundaries themselves.

How Are the 18 Core Practicals Assessed, and What Is Due by 15 April?

1SC0's specification sets 18 mandatory core practicals that every candidate must carry out during the course, spread across the Biology, Chemistry and Physics content. There is no separate practical exam and no NEA (non-exam assessment) mark for combined science — all six papers are written examinations, so the practicals are not marked directly. Instead, questions drawing on the core practicals are built into the six written papers themselves, testing whether a candidate understands the method, the variables and the sources of error in the practical they carried out, rather than assessing their hands-on technique on the day.

Centres carry an administrative obligation attached to the 18 practicals that has nothing to do with exam content: a Practical Science Statement confirming that a candidate has completed all 18 must be submitted to Pearson by 15 April in the year the candidate sits their exams. A parent whose child's school has not yet confirmed this is worth asking about directly, since it is a compliance deadline that sits outside the exam timetable and can be missed without a family ever hearing about it.

Because the 18 practicals surface as written questions rather than as a hands-on assessment, the most useful preparation is not repeating the practical itself but working back through what a written question on it actually asks: identifying the independent, dependent and control variables, explaining a method's sources of error, and interpreting the kind of results table or graph a practical of that type would produce. A student can carry out a practical correctly in the school laboratory and still lose marks on the exam question built around it, if they cannot explain the reasoning behind the method in writing under timed conditions.

Which Equations Does 1SC0 Expect Your Child to Know From Memory?

Pearson's specification carries a dedicated appendix, "Equations in Combined Science," and it is genuinely two separate lists, not one generic equations sheet. The first list must be recalled and applied unaided — a candidate is expected to know these equations and select the right one for a question without being prompted. The second list, confined to the physics content, is printed on the exam paper's own formulae sheet and does not need to be memorised at all; a candidate only needs to know when to use it and how to rearrange it.

That distinction changes how revision time should actually be spent. Treating every equation the same way — either trying to memorise the ones that are given anyway, or assuming the formulae sheet covers everything and skipping recall practice — wastes time in one direction or loses marks in the other. The efficient split is recall practice for the first list and rearrangement-and-application practice for the second, and a tutor working from the specification's own two-list structure, rather than a single undifferentiated "equations sheet," is the difference between the two.

How Many Students Sit Combined Science, and Is It Usually Foundation or Higher Tier?

Ofqual recorded 951,510 combined science entries across all exam boards in England for summer 2026, up 1.8% on the year before — but Ofqual's own release flags that this figure is double-counted, because combined science counts as the equivalent of two GCSE grades, so it represents roughly 475,755 candidates rather than 951,510 individual pupils. That scale, not the double-counting itself, is the point for a family choosing tutoring: combined science is one of the largest single entries in the GCSE system, and the figure spans every board, not Edexcel's 1SC0 alone.

Tiering behaves very differently for combined science than it does for the three separate sciences. In summer 2026, 39% of combined science entries sat the Higher tier paper, against 84% for Biology, 87% for Chemistry and 86% for Physics — an average of roughly 85.7% across the three separate sciences. That is a gap of around 47 percentage points between combined science and its separate-science equivalents, and it holds across all boards, not just Edexcel.
