OCR examines GCSE Biology through two separately-accredited specifications: Biology A (Gateway Science), code J247, and Biology B (Twenty First Century Science), code J257, both currently at Version 4.0 (August 2026) with no withdrawal notice on either. Gateway splits its four papers by topic group; Twenty First Century splits its four components by cognitive demand, Breadth against Depth. The two are not interchangeable, and most guides online only ever describe one.

How many GCSE Biology specifications does OCR actually run?

OCR’s own specification documents name two entirely separate GCSE Biology qualifications, both live for the same series. Biology A, marketed as Gateway Science, carries the code J247 and Ofqual accreditation number 601/8589/2; Biology B, marketed as Twenty First Century Science, carries the code J257 and accreditation number 601/8506/5. Both specifications are dated Version 4.0, August 2026 — the same edition number, the same publication month — which rules out the possibility that one is simply an older printing of the other.

Neither route is being phased out. A full-text search of both specification PDFs for the word “withdraw” returns exactly one match in each document, and it is the identical sentence in both: a malpractice clause about the withdrawal of a candidate’s grade for misconduct, not a notice that the qualification itself is closing. That distinction matters because OCR is in fact winding down a different qualification at the same time — A-level Biology B — so a route disappearing from OCR’s catalogue is not a hypothetical concern, and checking for it is the only way to be sure both GCSE routes remain genuine live choices rather than one legacy route being phased out quietly.

Both covers also carry the same transition notice: as of September 2025, OCR’s own name is Cambridge OCR, and certificates from the summer 2025 series onward carry the new branding while exam papers continue to show “OCR” or “Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations” during the changeover. Both specifications state, in identical wording, that the qualification “is available in England”, directing readers to a separate Wales or Northern Ireland register for those jurisdictions — the same England-only default AQA and Edexcel state on their own GCSE Biology specifications.

OCR names its combined-science equivalents differently again: Gateway’s double award is Combined Science A, code J250, and Twenty First Century’s is Combined Science B, code J260 — both carrying the higher Version 5.0, confirming they are separately maintained documents rather than the Biology specifications repackaged. A parent who sees “OCR Combined Science” and assumes it maps neatly onto whichever Biology route their child sits is assuming a link OCR’s own documents do not draw, which is why our GCSE tuition begins with the specification a student is actually entered for.

A test worth running: does the OCR link you were sent actually contain anything?

Before citing anything from OCR’s website, this page ran a control test, and the result changes which OCR link is worth following. Three URLs on OCR’s /qualifications/ hub were fetched with a real browser user agent: the genuine Biology A page, the genuine Biology B page, and a deliberately invented URL for a qualification that does not exist. All three returned HTTP 200, all three were exactly 48,185 bytes, and all three were byte-for-byte identical — MD5 2f199808c8f0fc7347528bba0c5186df on every one. Searching the real Biology A page’s own HTML for the string “J247” returns zero matches. The page that is supposedly about Biology A does not mention it.

The same test on OCR’s /Images/ PDF route behaves the way a working website should: an invented PDF filename returns a genuine 404 at 47,413 bytes, while the two real specification PDFs return 200 with the correct file size and a proper application/pdf content type. So a link that opens a page under /qualifications/ proves only that a URL exists on OCR’s server, nothing about what the qualification actually contains; a link that opens a PDF under /Images/ is the one worth following. Every fact on this page is sourced to the specification PDFs for that reason — a reader checking any of them by clicking through to OCR’s HTML subject page will find a page that looks fine and says almost nothing.

How do Gateway’s four papers differ from Twenty First Century’s four components?

Gateway Biology A is assessed by four written papers, two per tier. Papers 1 and 3 (Foundation and Higher) examine Topics B1 to B3 plus the practical-skills topic B7; Papers 2 and 4 examine Topics B4 to B6 plus B7, and assume knowledge of B1 to B3 already covered on the other paper. Each paper is 90 marks, runs 1 hour 45 minutes, and is worth 50% of that tier’s GCSE. Content itself is organised into six teaching topics — Cell level systems, Scaling up, Organism level systems, Community level systems, Genes, inheritance and selection, and Global challenges — plus B7 for practical skills, seven in total.

Twenty First Century Biology B does not split its papers by topic at all. Its four components — Breadth and Depth, at each tier — each draw on content from all eight of the route’s own teaching chapters, and are distinguished instead by cognitive demand. OCR’s own specification states that the Breadth paper “can assess content from across the whole specification” using short-answer questions only, with no extended response anywhere on it; the Depth paper also draws on the whole specification but must include “at least two extended response questions”, each “with a total of 6 marks”, and exists, in OCR’s own words, so learners “can demonstrate their depth of understanding of specific aspects of the content”. Each component is also 90 marks, 1 hour 45 minutes and 50% of that tier’s GCSE — identical arithmetic to Gateway, built on a completely different principle.

The two routes’ content maps do not line up topic-for-topic either. Twenty First Century organises its content into seven teaching chapters — including Chapter B7, “Ideas about Science”, which has no direct Gateway equivalent — plus Chapter B8 for practical skills, eight in total against Gateway’s seven. A tutor moving a student between routes cannot simply relabel Gateway’s topic numbers onto Twenty First Century’s chapter numbers and expect them to match.

Are OCR’s Assessment Objective weightings the same on both routes?

Ofqual fixes the overall Assessment Objective weighting for GCSE science at 40% AO1 (knowledge and understanding), 40% AO2 (application) and 20% AO3 (analysis and evaluation), and both OCR routes hit that total exactly. How each route gets there is where they diverge. Gateway’s own assessment-objective table splits it identically across both of its papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2 each carry AO1 20%, AO2 20%, AO3 10%, adding to 50% each, so the same profile applies whichever paper a student is sitting.

Twenty First Century deliberately does not do this. Its own assessment-objective table weights Breadth at AO1 24%, AO2 18%, AO3 8%, and Depth at AO1 16%, AO2 22%, AO3 12% — both still summing to 50%, but distributed in opposite directions. Depth asks proportionally more application and analysis questions than Breadth does, which follows directly from what the two components are built to test: short-answer recall-and-application across the whole specification on Breadth, extended six-mark responses on Depth. Add Breadth’s 24/18/8 to Depth’s 16/22/12 and the total is 40/40/20 — the same fixed figure Gateway reaches with an identical split on both its papers, arrived at by two different routes.

Practical Activity Groups: OCR’s own term, and the same eight names under both routes

OCR does not call its required practicals “required practicals” at all. Its own specifications use a different term throughout: Practical Activity Group, or PAG — not AQA’s “required practical”, not Edexcel’s “core practical”. Both GCSE Biology routes state the same compulsory minimum: “It is compulsory that learners complete at least eight practical activities”, derived from splitting the Department for Education’s “Biology, chemistry and physics GCSE subject content, July 2015” Appendix 4 into eight Practical Activity Groups.

The eight PAGs, read directly from Gateway’s specification, are: microscopy; testing for biological molecules; sampling techniques; rates of enzyme-controlled reactions; photosynthesis; physiology, responses and respiration; microbiological techniques; and transport in and out of cells. Comparing that list word for word against Twenty First Century’s own PAG table finds the same eight names, the same apparatus, and the same Appendix 4 attribution in both documents — a genuine check, not an assumption, and the answer is that this part of the two routes is identical rather than different.

What differs between GCSE and A-level is how the practical work is actually assessed. Both GCSE routes state that “no less than 15%” of the written-exam questions assess practical skills, and that is the entire mechanism — there is no separate certificate. A full-text search of both GCSE specifications for “Not Classified”, “CPAC” and “Practical Endorsement” returns zero matches in either document. That is a genuine absence, not an assumption, and it is a real contrast with our OCR A-level Biology page, where OCR’s own A-level specification describes a formal Practical Endorsement reported as a separate Pass or Not Classified result alongside the grade — a mechanism GCSE Biology simply does not have.

The maths floor both routes set the same way

Both OCR GCSE Biology routes require at least 10% of marks to test GCSE-level (or above) mathematical skills, and both calibrate the difficulty identically, in wording confirmed against Gateway’s and Twenty First Century’s own specifications: Foundation-tier maths questions “will not be of a lower demand than that which is expected of learners at Key Stage 3”, and Higher-tier maths questions will not be lower than “question and tasks in assessment for the Foundation Tier in a GCSE qualification in Mathematics”. That is a floor on difficulty, not a topic list, and OCR’s wording is near-verbatim identical across both specifications — the same calibration device AQA uses on its own GCSE Biology specification, independently confirmed here in OCR’s own words for both of its routes.

What OCR does not publish: a tier-overlap percentage

Some awarding bodies state exactly what share of GCSE Biology marks is common to both Foundation and Higher tier. OCR does not. A full-text search of both specification PDFs for the phrasing Ofqual’s own regulatory floor uses — common questions “targeted at” the grades where the tiers overlap — returns zero matches referring to tier overlap in either document. The only section headed “Overlap” in either specification concerns overlap with Combined Science, Chemistry and Physics, not overlap between Foundation and Higher tier.

That is a genuine, checked absence, not an oversight in this page’s research: our sibling pages on AQA GCSE Biology and Edexcel GCSE Biology each report the tier-overlap figure their own board publishes. OCR’s own paper architecture is a plausible reason it publishes none — Gateway’s four papers and Twenty First Century’s four components are each independently graded documents, not Foundation and Higher versions of one shared paper, so there is no single board-published overlap figure of the kind its sibling boards state. Ofqual’s regulatory minimum for tier overlap still applies to OCR whether or not OCR publishes the resulting number.

Foundation tier, and the paper-level boundaries the parent page does not carry

OCR’s confirmed June 2026 grade boundaries, out of 180 marks overall, show Gateway’s Foundation tier at grade 5 112, grade 4 93, grade 3 68, grade 2 43 and grade 1 18. Twenty First Century’s Foundation tier, same series, same 180-mark maximum, reads grade 5 112, grade 4 91, grade 3 71, grade 2 52 and grade 1 33 — identical at the very top and increasingly different below it.

The clearest evidence that each route’s four papers are genuinely, independently graded — rather than a shared Foundation/Higher version of the same paper — sits one level down, at individual paper boundaries. Gateway’s Higher-tier Paper 3, out of 90 raw marks, needed 74 for a grade 9; Paper 4, the same 90 raw marks, same tier, same series, needed only 67. Twenty First Century shows the identical pattern: Higher-tier Depth needed 71 out of 90 for a grade 9, while Higher-tier Breadth, the same marks available, needed 67. Two papers worth exactly the same raw marks, in the same tier and series, carrying different boundaries — that is only possible if OCR grades each paper as its own document, which is exactly what both specifications describe.
