How Pearson's 76 June 2027 entry options for 9FM0 work, and which of them put more than one paper in a single afternoon.
Book a Free ConsultationPearson Edexcel A-Level Further Mathematics (9FM0) is a four-paper Level 3 Advanced GCE worth 300 marks that a Year 13 student sits in a single May/June series. The two Core Pure papers are the same for everyone. Everything after that is decided by the entry option code a centre submits alongside 9FM0 — and Pearson's Information Manual publishes 76 of those codes for June 2027, not the ten option pairs the specification describes.
Already know which optional papers your child is entered for? Our expert A-level Further Maths tutors help Year 13 students with the exact 9FM0 route their school has entered — the two Core Pure papers plus the specific Option 1 and Option 2 papers on their entry code, rather than a generic Further Maths syllabus.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppThe specification is clear about the shape of the choice. Students take two of eight optional papers, drawn from two columns: Option 1 holds 3A Further Pure Mathematics 1, 3B Further Statistics 1, 3C Further Mechanics 1 and 3D Decision Mathematics 1; Option 2 holds 4A Further Pure Mathematics 2, 4B Further Statistics 2, 4C Further Mechanics 2 and 4D Decision Mathematics 2. Pearson's own wording sets the rule and then does the arithmetic: “Students choose a pair of options, either: any two Option 1 papers, or a matching pair of Option 1 and Option 2 papers This makes a total of ten different option pairs.” Six of those ten pair two Option 1 papers together; the remaining four are the matched pairs 3A with 4A, 3B with 4B, 3C with 4C and 3D with 4D.
What the specification does not print is the code a centre actually types. Appendix 9 hands that job somewhere else: “Students must be entered for 9FM0 along with the entry code for the optional route that they wish to take. The entry codes for each optional route are provided in the UK Information Manual. For students taking more than the two optional papers (see page 4 ‘Content and assessment overview’), entry codes are provided for each combination of options they may wish to take.” That last sentence is where the number stops being ten.
The A level and AS level section of the Pearson Qualifications Information Manual 2026/2027 lists 76 distinct 9FM0 entry options, running from 9FM0 A0 to 9FM0 H3, each one marked available for the June 2027 series. Ten of them carry two optional papers and are the specification's ten pairs. The other 66 carry three, four, five, six, seven or all eight, because the specification permits it: “Students are permitted to take more than the two optional papers if they want to extend their course of study.” At the far end sits 9FM0 H3, a single code covering every optional paper Edexcel publishes.
| Optional papers on the entry option | Entry options available, June 2027 | Example code |
|---|---|---|
| Two (the specification's ten option pairs) | 10 | 9FM0 A0 — 3A and 4A |
| Three | 16 | 9FM0 A1 — 3A, 3B and 3C |
| Four | 19 | 9FM0 C9 — 3A, 3B, 4A and 4B |
| Five | 16 | 9FM0 D9 — 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D and 4A |
| Six | 10 | 9FM0 F7 — 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D, 4A and 4B |
| Seven | 4 | 9FM0 G8 — all but 4D |
| Eight | 1 | 9FM0 H3 — every optional paper |
| Total | 76 | — |
Source: Pearson Qualifications Information Manual 2026/2027, A level and AS level section, pages 29–38, retrieved 26 September 2026. The counts are this page's own tally of Pearson's table; Pearson prints the rows, not a total.
The ten baseline routes are worth naming, because they are the ten the specification itself describes. 9FM0 A0 is 3A with 4A; B0 is 3A with 3B; C0 is 3A with 3C; D0 is 3A with 3D; E0 is 3B with 3C; F0 is 3B with 3D; G0 is 3B with 4B; H0 is 3C with 3D; J0 is 3C with 4C; and K0 is 3D with 4D. There is no I0 — Pearson's lettering skips the letter I. Every one of the 76 shares the same subject code, the same Ofqual qualification number, 603/1499/0, and the same 16–18 performance-table discount code, 2330. The differences are entirely in which papers arrive.
The reason the extra 66 exist is a rule Pearson states in the awarding section of the specification, and its wording is worth reading closely: “Where students take more than two optional papers, the combination of papers that result in the best grade will be used. The combination of papers that is graded may not be the combination that gives the highest number of marks. The total mark will be the total from the combination that produces the best grade.” Because the qualification is graded on 300 marks from the two Core Pure papers plus two optional papers, and because — in Pearson's words — “the different routes within the qualification may have different grade thresholds”, a student can score more raw marks on one pair and still be awarded on another. The per-route boundaries themselves are set out on our Edexcel A-Level Further Maths page.
One administrative detail follows from all this and catches families out. A Year 13 student is never entered for individual papers. Appendix 8 of the specification lists the paper codes and then says plainly: “These codes are provided for reference purposes. Students do not need to be entered for individual papers.” So there is no paper-level entry to inspect. The one place the route is recorded is the entry option code on Edexcel Online, and an exams officer can read it out.
Pearson published its final GCE timetable for summer 2027, and the ten 9FM0 papers are not distributed the way the entry options are. The two Core Pure papers and the four Option 1 papers each have a date to themselves. All four Option 2 papers share one.
| Paper | Code | Date, summer 2027 | Session | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core Pure Mathematics 1 | 9FM0 01 | Wednesday 12 May 2027 | Afternoon | 1h 30m |
| Core Pure Mathematics 2 | 9FM0 02 | Thursday 20 May 2027 | Afternoon | 1h 30m |
| Further Mechanics 1 | 9FM0 3C | Tuesday 25 May 2027 | Afternoon | 1h 30m |
| Further Statistics 1 | 9FM0 3B | Thursday 10 June 2027 | Afternoon | 1h 30m |

Core Pure secure but the applied papers behind? Our expert A-level Further Maths tutors work paper by paper through Further Pure 1 and 2, Further Statistics 1 and 2, Further Mechanics 1 and 2 and Decision 1 and 2, at the depth and in the order a student's own 9FM0 route calls for.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppFor a student on any of the ten standard option pairs this changes nothing at all. Each of those routes carries at most one Option 2 paper, so the Monday 21 June 2027 afternoon session holds one paper or none. The collision only appears on the routes a centre has to choose deliberately. Of the 76 entry options, 33 carry two or more Option 2 papers: 24 carry two, 8 carry three, and 9FM0 H3 carries all four. Eleven of the 76 carry no Option 2 paper at all and the remaining 32 carry exactly one.
That distinction matters, and it is worth being precise about it. This is not a case of several codes for one paper being timetabled together, which is a scheduling convenience that affects every candidate equally. Here the papers are genuinely different examinations, and whether a student meets two of them in one sitting depends entirely on which of the 76 routes their centre entered — a choice, made months earlier, that a family can ask an exams officer about.
The arithmetic at the extreme is straightforward. Four papers of 1 hour and 30 minutes is six hours of examination in one afternoon. UK afternoon sessions begin at 1:30pm, and Pearson's own conduct note sets out what happens next: “Candidates with more than one examination in a session should take these consecutively. A supervised break may be given between consecutive examinations.” A supervised break is permissive, not guaranteed, and the wording puts the decision with the centre.
How unusual is that? This page grouped all 143 A-level paper rows in Pearson's Summer 2027 GCE final timetable by date, session and specification code, giving 139 groups. Exactly one holds more than two papers: 9FM0 on the afternoon of Monday 21 June 2027. The next largest is Politics 9PL0, with two papers on the afternoon of Tuesday 15 June 2027. That is a count of one document on 26 September 2026 and it is not a claim about any other awarding body.
For a Year 13 student the practical reading is simple. Ask which entry option code the school has used, count the 4-series papers in it, and you know whether 21 June 2027 is one examination or several. If it is several, the closing stretch to 21 June 2027 has a shape that a generic revision plan will not match, and the Option 2 papers — Further Pure 2, Further Statistics 2, Further Mechanics 2 and Decision 2 — are the ones to bring forward.
My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
Pearson publishes its own dated rows for the June 2027 series, and the route decision is bounded by them rather than by the teaching. For UK centres, basedata is issued on 20 November 2026, the entry deadline is 21 February 2027, late fees are charged from 22 February 2027, and amendment fees are charged from 22 April 2027. Centres outside the UK work to a different row: their June 2027 entry deadline is 21 March 2027, a month later, which is why an international school's dates should never be read across to an English one.
The 22 April 2027 date is the one that bears on the route, because of what an amendment is. Pearson defines it directly: “Amendment fees will be charged if you change a subject/unit option or tier from the high late fee date. You will not incur a fee for changing candidate details (such as name amendments) unless a certificate has been issued.” On 9FM0 a subject option change is a move between the 76 entry codes. Sixty days separate the 21 February 2027 entry deadline from the 22 April 2027 amendment date, and the first 9FM0 paper follows 20 days after that, on 12 May 2027.
Two further dates complete the administrative picture for a Year 13 cohort. Modified papers for the June 2027 series had to be ordered by 31 January 2027, three weeks before the entry deadline itself. Results are released to centres on 11 August 2027 and may be given to candidates on 12 August 2027.
Our expert A-level Further Maths tutors help Year 13 students with Pearson Edexcel 9FM0 as their school has actually entered it. That means the two Core Pure papers every route shares, and then the specific Option 1 and Option 2 papers on the entry code — Further Pure 2, Further Statistics 2, Further Mechanics 2 or Decision 2 — rather than a course that treats all ten pairs as interchangeable. Where a centre has entered a student for a third or fourth optional paper, the programme has to cover more ground before 21 June 2027 than a two-paper route does, and that is a scheduling question as much as a teaching one.
Work usually starts by establishing three things: the entry option code, which of the four Option 1 dates between 25 May and 18 June 2027 apply to them, and how many papers land on 21 June 2027. Everything after that follows from the answers. A student on 9FM0 K0, with Decision 1 on 15 June and Decision 2 on 21 June, has a very different final month from one on 9FM0 B0, whose last paper is Further Pure 1 on 18 June.
Sitting more than two optional papers this summer? Our expert A-level Further Maths tutors help Year 13 students carrying a three- or four-option 9FM0 route cover the extra ground before June 2027, working to the papers named on the entry code rather than to a standard two-paper course.

For how the boards structure the qualification differently, see the A-Level Further Maths board comparison, and for students taking Further Maths alongside single Maths, our Year 13 Edexcel A-Level Maths page covers 9MA0. Pearson's own documents are the primary source throughout: the Edexcel AS and A level Mathematics (2017) subject page carries the specification, the Entries and Information Manual carries the entry options and key dates, and the exam timetables page carries the Summer 2027 final timetable.
Seventy-six. The A level and AS level section of the Pearson Qualifications Information Manual 2026/2027 lists 76 distinct 9FM0 entry options, running from 9FM0 A0 to 9FM0 H3, each marked available for the June 2027 series. Ten of them carry two optional papers and match the ten option pairs the specification names. The other 66 carry three, four, five, six, seven or all eight optional papers. All 76 share the subject code 9FM0, the Ofqual qualification number 603/1499/0 and the 16 to 18 discount code 2330.
Yes. Pearson's 9FM0 specification, Issue 4 of June 2023, states that students are permitted to take more than the two optional papers if they want to extend their course of study, and Appendix 9 confirms that entry codes are provided for each combination of options they may wish to take. The Information Manual bears this out: 66 of the 76 June 2027 entry options carry three or more optional papers, and one of them, 9FM0 H3, covers all eight optional papers Edexcel publishes.
Pearson uses the combination that produces the best grade, and its wording is deliberately precise: where students take more than two optional papers, the combination of papers that result in the best grade will be used, and the combination that is graded may not be the combination that gives the highest number of marks. The award is made on 300 marks from the two Core Pure papers plus two optional papers, each paper carrying 75 marks and 25 per cent of the qualification. Pearson also notes that different routes may have different grade thresholds.
All four Option 2 papers. Pearson's Summer 2027 GCE final timetable places Paper 4A Further Pure Mathematics 2, Paper 4B Further Statistics 2, Paper 4C Further Mechanics 2 and Paper 4D Decision Mathematics 2 in the afternoon session of Monday 21 June 2027, each lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. The four Option 1 papers are spread across four separate dates: Further Mechanics 1 on 25 May 2027, Further Statistics 1 on 10 June 2027, Decision Mathematics 1 on 15 June 2027 and Further Pure Mathematics 1 on 18 June 2027.
Only on the entry options that carry two or more Option 2 papers, and there are 33 of those among the 76. Twenty-four carry two, eight carry three and 9FM0 H3 carries all four, which is four examinations of 1 hour and 30 minutes, or six hours, in the afternoon session of Monday 21 June 2027. Pearson's timetable note states that candidates with more than one examination in a session should take these consecutively, and that a supervised break may be given between consecutive examinations. UK afternoon sessions start at 1:30pm.
The UK entry deadline for the June 2027 series is 21 February 2027, but that is not when the route is fixed. Pearson charges amendment fees from 22 April 2027, and defines an amendment as changing a subject or unit option or tier from the high late fee date. On 9FM0 that means a move between the 76 entry codes. Sixty days separate 21 February 2027 from 22 April 2027, and the first 9FM0 paper is 20 days later, on 12 May 2027. International centres work to a later entry deadline of 21 March 2027.

Its Ofqual qualification number is 603/1499/0. It is four externally examined papers totalling 300 marks, and Pearson requires that students complete all assessments in May or June in any single year, so a Year 13 cohort sits the whole qualification in one series.
