Cambridge Maths · Warwick — STEP preparation guide for International Baccalaureate students
Book a Free ConsultationThe Sixth Term Examination Papers (STEP) are required by the University of Cambridge as an offer condition for Mathematics and are sometimes required or recommended for Warwick. If you are studying the International Baccalaureate and aiming for a Cambridge Maths offer, this guide explains the specific content gaps between IB HL Maths and STEP, and how to bridge them effectively.
STEP is a paper-based mathematics examination set by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing. There are two papers: STEP 2 and STEP 3 (STEP 1 was discontinued). Each paper is 3 hours long with 12 questions — 8 in pure mathematics, 2 in statistics, and 2 in mechanics. You answer 6 questions of your choice. Cambridge Maths typically requires STEP 2 at grade 1 or above as an offer condition. Some other Cambridge courses and Warwick Maths may also include STEP conditions. STEP is sat in June, alongside A-level exams.
Unlike the TMUA (which is sat in October for interview shortlisting), STEP is a final condition of your offer. You must achieve the required grade to secure your place. It is one of the most demanding undergraduate mathematics entrance examinations in the world — questions require extended, rigorous written solutions, not multiple choice.
IB Maths Analysis and Approaches HL provides solid preparation for the pure mathematics core of STEP: calculus (differentiation, integration, differential equations), algebra (complex numbers, matrices to some extent, proof by induction), trigonometry, and probability. Students with strong IB Maths AA HL grades have a good foundation to build on.
Several STEP topics are either absent or underrepresented in IB Maths AA HL:
Many students — and some school teachers — have an inaccurate mental model of what Grade 1 on STEP 2 requires. The grading works as follows: STEP 2 has 12 questions. Candidates attempt at most 6. Each question is marked out of 20. Grades are assigned based on total marks: roughly speaking, Grade S (outstanding) requires approximately 90+ marks, Grade 1 requires approximately 60–85 marks, Grade 2 requires approximately 40–59 marks.
Grade 1 — the standard Cambridge offer condition — therefore requires fully correct solutions to approximately 3 questions out of the 6 you attempt, with partial credit on others. This is achievable with consistent preparation but requires significantly more mathematical depth than A-level or IB HL Further Maths.
The most common mistake in STEP preparation is attempting too many questions in practice sessions before solutions are thorough enough. STEP rewards depth: three completely correct solutions score higher than six half-correct solutions. Practise completing questions fully before moving on, and treat partial solutions as diagnostic tools for identifying where your mathematical toolkit has gaps rather than as acceptable exam performance.
IB HL Further Maths students have a stronger starting point for STEP 3 than HL Maths AA students, particularly in complex numbers and matrices. However, the mechanics gap remains significant for all IB students and is worth addressing early.
Leading Tuition's STEP tutors have achieved Grade S and Grade 1 on STEP 2 and STEP 3 and understand the specific challenges facing international IB students. We provide intensive one-to-one STEP preparation, working through question types by difficulty and building the mathematical depth required for Grade 1. Start of Year 13 (September): Read the STEP specification. Identify content gaps vs your IB syllabus. Begin Cambridge STEP Support Programme from module 1.
October–February: Cover mechanics modules using A-level Further Maths materials. Continue STEP Support Programme. Attempt some STEP 2 pure questions without time pressure.
March–April: Begin timed practice on full papers. Prioritise pure mathematics questions initially.
May–June: Full timed 3-hour sittings once per week. Review solutions against mark schemes in detail. Identify question types you are consistently losing marks on.
Students who achieve STEP grade 1 typically spend 15–20 hours per week on STEP preparation during the final months. This is a demanding commitment alongside IB final exams — plan your overall Year 13 timeline carefully. See also our guide on STEP and TMUA together for Cambridge Maths.
Yes. Cambridge Maths applies the same admissions requirements to all applicants regardless of nationality or curriculum. International students studying the IB must meet the STEP 2 grade 1 condition just as A-level students do. STEP is sat in June, administered by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing at approved centres worldwide. The key difference for IB students is that the IB curriculum has specific gaps relative to A-level Further Maths that need to be addressed during preparation.
The main gaps are: (1) Mechanics — STEP includes calculus-based Newtonian mechanics not covered to this depth in IB. (2) Further Pure — polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions, 3D vectors, and matrices beyond 2x2 extend beyond IB HL Maths. (3) Statistics — STEP uses A-level Statistics distributions that differ slightly from IB. (4) Extended proof writing — STEP requires multi-page formal mathematical proofs at a depth beyond IB HL. Plan to spend six to nine months addressing these gaps.
Start at the beginning of Year 13 (September). This gives you nine months before the June sitting. Begin with the Cambridge STEP Support Programme modules to systematically cover content gaps, then move to timed past paper practice from March onwards. Students who start in January or later consistently find the content preparation period too short and underperform in the mechanics sections specifically.
