Test Format

TMUA is a 2-hour 30-minute test with two papers of 20 multiple-choice questions each. Paper 1 (Applications of Mathematical Knowledge) tests application of calculus, algebra, functions, and statistics. Paper 2 (Mathematical Reasoning) tests formal logical reasoning and proof. No calculator is permitted.

TMUA Scoring and What a Competitive Result Looks Like

TMUA is scored on a 1.0–9.0 scale. The scale is not linear — the difference between 5.0 and 6.0 represents far more improvement than the difference between 4.0 and 5.0, because there are more candidates clustered in the middle of the distribution. The approximate percentile benchmarks are: 5.0 = median (50th percentile), 6.0 = 70th percentile, 6.5 = 80th percentile, 7.0 = 90th percentile, 7.5 = 95th percentile.

Cambridge Economics typically shortlists candidates scoring 6.5 or above. Cambridge Maths and Computer Science shortlist candidates from similar score ranges. A TMUA score below 5.0 essentially makes a Cambridge interview invitation very unlikely, regardless of predicted grades. Scores of 7.5+ are genuinely exceptional and place you in the top 5% of all TMUA candidates worldwide.

The score is reported directly to universities — you cannot choose which universities see it. This is an important point for applicants who perform unexpectedly poorly: unlike the UCAT (where you can choose whether to apply to universities that see your score), TMUA scores go to all universities that require it as part of your UCAS application.

Cambridge applicants can also sit in January (4–8 January 2027). The fee outside the UK and Republic of Ireland is £133.
