Does every Birmingham secondary school actually teach GCSE Computer Science?

The tell sits in two columns on a school's own Department for Education entry list, not in the word “computing” itself. GCSE Computer Science is filed under DfE's own subject description “Computer Studies/Computing”, qualification type GCSE. But the same subject-entries tool records a second, entirely different heading, “Computer Appreciation / Introduction”, filed as a vocational Technical Award rather than a GCSE. A school can enter pupils for either, both or neither, and the qualification-type column is the only reliable way to tell which.

That range is wide enough to matter for any family assuming Computer Science is entered near-universally, the way Biology or Chemistry usually is. At King Edward VI Aston School, a selective grammar, 80 of 140 pupils sat the GCSE in 2024/25 — 57.1% of the entire cohort. At King Edward VI Northfield School for Girls, a non-selective school a few miles away, just 10 of 141 pupils did, 7.1%. At two schools the vocational alternative actually overtakes the GCSE. King Edward VI King's Norton School for Boys entered 45 pupils for a vocational Technical Award in computing against 35 for the GCSE, out of 171 pupils — more pupils took the vocational route than the academic one. At Yardleys School, DfE's own entry list records two separate Technical Award qualifications under that same single “Computer Appreciation / Introduction” heading — 41 entries and 79 entries, with the public subject-entries tool not naming which specific award is which — a combined 120 of 176 pupils, 68.2% of the entire cohort, against just 35 GCSE Computer Science entries, 19.9%. A school entering nobody for the GCSE, or entering more pupils for a vocational alternative than for it, is not a school that ignores computing altogether; it has chosen a different qualification, and only DfE's qualification-type column shows which.

Does GCSE Computer Science count toward the EBacc science requirement — or is it optional there too?

Computer Science is one of four subjects that can satisfy the English Baccalaureate's science requirement, and the Department for Education's own guidance sets out exactly how a pupil qualifies. Pupils need one of two options: “GCSE combined science — pupils take 2 GCSEs that cover the 3 main sciences, biology, chemistry and physics”, or “3 single sciences at GCSE — pupils choose 3 subjects from biology, chemistry, physics and computer science”. A pupil can satisfy the science pillar without ever sitting a physics exam, provided Computer Science is one of their three single sciences.

Birmingham's state-funded secondaries entered 94.8% of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 for the science element of the EBacc in 2024/25, against 94.1% nationally — but that figure is satisfied overwhelmingly through combined science, which most Birmingham pupils sit, rather than through Computer Science specifically. It is a completely different, much broader measure from the 27.1% of Birmingham pupils entered for the exact biology-chemistry-physics triple against 23.3% nationally, used on our Birmingham GCSE Physics page. A pupil entered for Biology, Chemistry and Computer Science together — three single sciences, satisfying the pillar's second route — counts inside the first, 94.8% figure, but not inside the second, 27.1% figure; the two should never be added, subtracted, or treated as versions of the same statistic. Department for Education also publishes a narrower measure again, counting only pupils entered for any three of the four sciences including Computer Science specifically — this page could not independently confirm that narrower Birmingham figure within the school-comparison tool used for the rest of this page, so it is not stated here.

Which exam boards currently offer GCSE Computer Science, and how is it assessed?

Four boards currently offer GCSE Computer Science to English schools, each checked directly against its own live specification page or the Department for Education's qualifications register on 2 September 2026. AQA's GCSE Computer Science is specification 8525. OCR's is GCSE Computer Science (9-1), J277. Pearson Edexcel's is its Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Computer Science, 1CP2, named on the front cover of its own specification PDF. WJEC Eduqas's is Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Computer Science, Qualification Number 6018291X on the Department for Education's own list of qualifications approved for funding, which shows the qualification's funding approval running through 31 July 2027.

None of these four codes is new for 2026, but AQA's carries two live editions at once, and the DfE entry figures above and the exam content a Birmingham pupil sits today belong to different ones. AQA's own site publishes a “GCSE Computer Science 8525 (Current)” edition, last examined in 2026 — the edition the pupils counted in every 2024/25 entry figure above actually sat — alongside a “GCSE Computer Science 8525 (Updated)” edition, first taught from September 2025 with first exams in summer 2027. Both carry the same specification code, 8525; only the content and the exam-series dates differ. AQA's own introduction to the Updated edition is explicit that it is revised, not replacement, content: “This is the specification for first teaching in September 2025. For the current specification, please follow this link.” A pupil who has already started the course sits whichever edition their own school entered them under; anyone starting the course from September 2025 onwards sits the Updated edition, since the Current edition's final sitting was summer 2026.

No board counts coursework toward the final grade, on either AQA edition or on any of the other three boards, but the second paper is not assessed the same way everywhere. AQA and OCR test programming through a traditional written paper. On AQA's Current edition (last examined 2026, the one the 2024/25 entry figures above reflect), Paper 1, Computational thinking and programming skills, is a 2-hour written exam worth 90 marks and 50% of the GCSE, with Paper 2, Computing concepts, making up the other half at 1 hour 45 minutes; AQA's own Updated edition (first taught September 2025, first examined 2027) keeps an identical split under the same paper names and weightings, with only the underlying content trimmed. OCR's own specification shows a similar shape, two written papers of 1 hour 30 minutes each, 80 marks apiece, each worth 50% of the GCSE. Pearson Edexcel and WJEC Eduqas instead run a practical on-screen exam for their second component: Pearson Edexcel's own specification sets Paper 1 as a written exam and Paper 2, Application of Computational Thinking, as a 2-hour on-screen exam in which students design, write, test and refine real code inside an IDE using Python 3; WJEC Eduqas's own specification sets an identical split, a 1 hour 45 minute written Component 1 and a 2-hour on-screen Component 2, with candidates' work submitted to WJEC electronically. Whichever format a board uses for that second component, none treats it as separate coursework: both of AQA's editions, plus OCR, Pearson Edexcel and WJEC Eduqas, each require schools to submit a “Practical programming statement” (AQA and OCR's term) or “Practical Programming Statement” (Pearson Edexcel and WJEC Eduqas's term) — a written declaration confirming every pupil had the opportunity to develop practical programming skills during the course. It is a compliance declaration in every case, not a piece of assessed coursework, and failing to submit one is treated as a malpractice matter for the school rather than a mark deducted from any pupil. Ofqual's own 23 January 2019 announcement explains why every current specification works this way: after malpractice was found in the original, grade-bearing non-exam assessment, an ungraded interim task ran for students sitting exams up to 2021, after which “exam boards will be free to adopt approaches to assessing programming skills by examination” from 2022 onwards — the point from which every specification since, on every board, has been fully exam-assessed with no coursework counted toward the grade at all.

AQA's update to 8525 revises content inside an existing qualification; a separate, larger change is already committed for later. The government's own response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review, published 5 November 2025, states plainly: “We will replace the computer science GCSE with a GCSE in computing that better reflects the breadth of the curriculum.” The document gives no first-teaching date for this replacement, and none should be assumed from it.

Is every “King Edward VI” school in Birmingham equally likely to teach GCSE Computer Science?

No — and, as on our Birmingham GCSE Physics and GCSE History pages, assuming otherwise from the name alone is an easy mistake to make. Six of Birmingham's eight state grammar schools carry the King Edward VI name, and every one checked for this page confirmed “Selective” at GIAS, the Department for Education's Get Information about Schools service, on 2 September 2026. But the King Edward VI Foundation also runs several non-selective schools that admit without an entrance test, also confirmed at GIAS, and their Computer Science entry rates look nothing like their selective namesakes'.

Two of the names above are easy to confuse with each other, and they are different schools entirely. King Edward VI Handsworth School is a selective girls' grammar, 51.6% GCSE Computer Science entry on a 192-pupil cohort. King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys is a separate, selective boys' grammar a short distance away, 40.3% on a 149-pupil cohort. Neither should be confused with King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy, a non-selective school also confirmed at GIAS, where 19 of 160 pupils sat the GCSE, 11.9%, against 16 more for a vocational Technical Award. A fourth school worth noting sits outside this pattern altogether: Lordswood Boys' School records no admissions-policy value at GIAS at all — neither “Selective” nor “Non-selective” — so this page does not classify it either way; its own GCSE Computer Science entry, 23 of 97 pupils, 23.7%, is reported here without a selectivity label attached. Selectivity itself is not the only predictor, either: The University of Birmingham School, a non-selective academy with no King Edward VI Foundation link, entered 64 of 151 pupils for the GCSE, 42.4% — higher than four of the five selective grammars in the table above.

How does Birmingham's pattern compare with England's national trend in GCSE Computer Science?

Entries for GCSE Computer Science are falling nationally, not just varying school to school within Birmingham. The National Centre for Computing Education's own results-day figures show 82,428 students entered for the qualification across England in 2026, down 7.1% from 88,750 in 2025 and 92,778 in 2024 — though still above the 80,027 entered in 2019, before the pandemic. The same source records the proportion of entries from female students rising slightly, to 23.0% in 2026 from 22.8% in 2025, a gender split that has been a well-documented feature of this subject nationally for years and is not something Department for Education's school-level Birmingham data breaks out on its own, since small subject cohorts are routinely suppressed at that level of detail.

Where a national breakdown does exist, attainment runs in the opposite direction to entries: grades have improved even as the number of pupils sitting the exam has fallen. 29.9% of the 2026 national cohort achieved grade 7 or above, against 29.6% in 2025, and female students outperformed male students at both thresholds checked — 36.0% of girls reached grade 7 or above against 28.1% of boys, and 76.2% of girls reached grade 4 or above against 68.9% of boys. None of these national figures is Birmingham-specific, and none should be read onto any individual Birmingham school without its own published breakdown.

How does Birmingham's overall GCSE performance compare with England, and what's missing?

One measure many parents expect to see is missing from every figure above, and it is missing everywhere in England, not just in Birmingham.
