Four qualifications sit in the same broad subject area, and only one of them is GCSE Computer Science. The GCSE is the academic route, examined on the standard 9-to-1 scale, and it is one of the four subjects -- alongside Biology, Chemistry and Physics -- that can satisfy the EBacc science pillar. OCR's Cambridge National in Creative iMedia (specification J834) and Pearson's BTEC Tech Award in Digital Information Technology (2022) are entirely separate, vocational qualifications: both are live and current, both are included on Key Stage 4 performance tables in England, and neither counts toward the EBacc. A fourth qualification, GCSE Information and Communication Technology, is withdrawn; Ofqun's own 2011 subject criteria for it (Ofqual/11/5020) now carries a formal withdrawal notice on gov.uk, and none of the sixteen Bristol schools checked for this page show any ICT-labelled entry in 2025.

DfE's own subjects-entered tables do not merge the academic and vocational routes under one label at every school -- at three Bristol schools this page checked, they sit as two distinct rows. St Bede's Catholic College recorded 29 entries under "Computer Studies/Computing," a GCSE, and a separate 43 entries under "Computer Appreciation / Introduction," logged as a Technical Award -- more pupils on the vocational route than the academic one. Bristol Metropolitan Academy shows the same split, 50 GCSE entries against 20 Technical Award entries, and so does Bristol Cathedral Choir School, 30 against 20. DfE's own key stage 4 discount-codes spreadsheet -- the official document behind both subject-heading systems -- shows why that vocational row cannot be read as a single qualification: "Computer Appreciation / Introduction" is discount code CN1, and CN1 covers four different Technical Award qualifications from three different awarding bodies at once -- Pearson's BTEC Tech Award in Digital Information Technology, OCR's Cambridge National in IT, WJEC's Vocational Award in ICT, and even OCR's Cambridge National in Creative iMedia, whose own primary code is KA4 but which also carries CN1 as a secondary discount code. A school's 20 or 43 entries under "Computer Appreciation / Introduction" could be any mix of those four; DfE's per-school table does not say which, and this page does not guess. Cotham School's second row is labelled differently again: 14 entries under "Interactive Video," also a Technical Award, alongside its 40 GCSE entries -- a heading that does not match any description in DfE's own discount-codes spreadsheet closely enough for this page to name a specific qualification behind it either. The same spreadsheet's Computer Science discount code, CK1, cross-confirms every GCSE specification number this page found directly on the boards' own sites: AQA's, OCR's, Eduqas's and Edexcel's GCSE Computer Science qualifications all carry discount code CK1, and none of the four boards' Computer Science entries can be confused with a CN1 or KA4 vocational award inside DfE's own classification.

None of the four boards' current GCSE Computer Science specifications is permanent. The Government's own November 2025 response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review states: "We will replace the computer science GCSE with a GCSE in computing that better reflects the breadth of the curriculum," and separately: "We will also replace the computer science GCSE with a broader offer that reflects the entirety of the computing curriculum whilst continuing to uphold the core principles of computer science such as programming and algorithms, and explore the development of a level 3 qualification in data science and AI." The same document sets a general timetable for new GCSEs in reformed subjects -- "some are ready for first teaching in 2029 and the rest for first teaching in 2030" -- without stating which of those two years Computing falls into; this page does not guess a date the Government has not itself published.

Does Computer Science Count as One of Bristol's EBacc Sciences?

Yes, in principle. The English Baccalaureate's science requirement is satisfied either through Combined Science -- a single double-award GCSE -- or through three separate sciences chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science. A pupil sitting Biology, Chemistry and Computer Science therefore meets the same requirement as a pupil sitting the Biology-Chemistry-Physics triple, without ever sitting Physics. DfE publishes both measures separately: "pupils entering biology, chemistry and physics" and a distinct "pupils entering three out of four single sciences," the second of which allows the Computer Science substitution the first does not.

For Bristol's state-funded schools in 2024/25, the two measures are identical: 935 pupils entered the exact triple, and precisely 935 entered three out of four sciences, against a 4,130-pupil cohort (22.6% either way). Not a single Bristol pupil made the Computer-Science-for-one-of-three substitution that year. England's figures move apart where Bristol's do not: 145,726 pupils entered the exact triple nationally against 145,985 entering three out of four sciences -- a gap of 259 pupils who did substitute Computer Science, out of a 625,648-pupil state-funded cohort (23.3% either way, to one decimal place). Both Bristol and England figures here are state-funded populations, the correct comparator for a Bristol local-authority figure.

Combined Science is the far larger route into the EBacc science pillar at both levels: 2,907 Bristol pupils entered it (70.4%) against 442,902 nationally (70.8%), and the pillar's overall entry rate -- combining both routes -- stood at 93.0% in Bristol (3,842 of 4,130 pupils) against 94.1% in England (588,875 of 625,648). None of this means Computer Science has no relationship to Bristol's science provision beyond that single substitution measure -- a pupil can still take Computer Science alongside Combined Science, feeding Attainment 8's shared EBacc-subject bucket rather than the strict three-separate-sciences route -- only that, on DfE's own narrowest measure of the substitution the subject is built to allow, Bristol recorded none in 2024/25.

This entire measure is on a fixed shelf life. The Government's November 2025 response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review states plainly: "In advance, we will remove EBacc headline and additional measures at key stage 4. This will take effect for the key stage 4 performance measures for the 2025 to 2026 academic year to be published in autumn 2026." The 2024/25 figures compared above are therefore among the last the EBacc science pillar will ever generate in its current form. The same document proposes replacing today's EBacc structure with two dedicated science slots inside a reworked Attainment 8, and states the Department "will seek views on the need for a fourth category of science subjects, including computer science/computing" -- meaning whether Computer Science keeps any formal role as a substitute science subject at all is now an open policy question, not a settled one.

Bristol Brunel Academy leads on both measures at once: the highest raw entry count (66) and the highest rate (26.3% of its 251-pupil cohort). Collegiate School's 25.6% comes from a much smaller base -- 22 entries out of an 86-pupil cohort -- showing that a high rate and a high headcount are not the same achievement. Among schools with any recorded entry, Clifton College's 8.7% is the lowest, well below Clifton High School's 9.5% despite Clifton College's more than double the pupil roll. The two schools with genuinely zero entries, Orchard School Bristol and E-Act Bristol Academy South, are examined separately below.

AQA, OCR, Eduqas or Edexcel: Which Specification Is Bristol Actually Sitting?

Four boards currently offer GCSE Computer Science, and every code below was confirmed on the board's own live page or specification PDF. AQA's specification is Computer Science (8525) -- but that single code currently covers two specification versions running in parallel. OCR, which rebranded to Cambridge OCR from September 2025 (certificates for pupils who sat exams in summer 2025 already carry the new name, while teaching materials keep the OCR name until they are refreshed), offers GCSE (9-1) Computer Science, specification J277, qualification number 601/8355/X, first assessed in 2022 and now at Version 3.1 (May 2026). WJEC Eduqas's own reference-codes table lists GCSE Computer Science's Qual Code as C500QS, alongside qualification number 601/8291/X. Pearson Edexcel's is Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Computer Science, specification 1CP2, first teaching September 2020 and first certification 2022 -- a code that, like several other boards' codes this site has found, sits inside the specification PDF's own cover page rather than on Edexcel's live webpage, which renders its content dynamically and does not expose the code to a direct page read.

AQA's dual-track position is worth spelling out because it affects any Bristol pupil currently choosing options. AQA's own specifications page marks the existing version (Version 1.2, 29 November 2022, "for GCSE exams in 2022 onwards") as "Current," with "Last teaching 2026, Last exams 2026" and a next exam date of 13 May 2026. A separate "Updated" version (Version 1.3, 16 June 2025) is explicitly "for teaching from September 2025 onwards, for GCSE exams in 2027 onwards." Both carry the specification number 8525. A Bristol Year 10 pupil who began the AQA course in September 2024 is most likely on the outgoing version, sitting their final exam in the 2026 series; a pupil beginning in September 2025 or later follows the Updated version instead, with first exams in 2027 -- two different specifications under one code, running side by side for a period. Which board, and which version of that board's specification, a given Bristol school teaches is set by the school itself and by when a pupil started the course -- not by anything DfE's own performance tables publish.

Does Bristol's Programming Coursework Count Towards the Final Grade?

It depends on the board, and this page checked the current position at two of them directly rather than assuming it from how the qualification used to be assessed. OCR's live specification states plainly that "practical programming skills are assessed by examination in Component 2, Section B" -- there is no separate non-exam assessment component at all; a pupil's programming ability is tested inside the written papers, alongside the theory content. Pearson Edexcel takes a different administrative approach: centres are required to submit a Practical Programming Statement (PPS), which "confirms they have taken reasonable steps to ensure that each student sitting our GCSE in Computer Science has had the opportunity to demonstrate their programming skills in terms of design, write, test and refine programs in Python during their course of study." The PPS is completed by a member of the centre's senior leadership team and submitted by 31 May in the exam year; failing to submit it is treated as a malpractice or maladministration risk for the school, not a mark deduction for the pupil. Either way, a Bristol pupil's final grade -- on both boards checked here -- comes entirely from written examination, not from a scored piece of programming coursework.

Why Do Two Bristol Secondaries Show Zero Computer Science Entries?

On Compare School and College Performance's own subjects-entered page -- the surface every entry figure on this page is read from -- Orchard School Bristol (a 177-pupil cohort, part of the Amplify Education academy trust, confirmed open at the Get Information About Schools register) and E-Act Bristol Academy South (a 124-pupil cohort, renamed from E-Act Merchants' Academy on 1 September 2024, also confirmed open) both list every subject they enter pupils for, and neither list contains a computing-related row under any label this page checked for -- not "Computer Studies/Computing," not "Computer Appreciation / Introduction," not "Interactive Video," and not a Creative iMedia or Multimedia row either. This page read each school's full subjects-entered list rather than searching for one expected label and stopping, precisely because a different DfE surface can display the same underlying entry under a different subject description. That is a different pattern from Bristol Grammar School, where a documented IGCSE-reporting gap already explains a similar zero figure across several subjects, including science: Bristol Grammar School is an independent school, and its own curriculum pages confirm it teaches subjects that simply do not appear in DfE's approved-qualifications list for state performance tables. Orchard School Bristol and E-Act Bristol Academy South are both open, non-selective, state-funded academies, not independent schools running an unlisted qualification route, so the usual explanation does not obviously transfer to either of them.
