Bromley's sixth forms entered 404 students for A-level Physics in 2024/25: 348 at fifteen state-funded schools and 56 at five independents. Three schools account for 187 of the 404. What sets the borough apart is who takes it. Of the 348 state-funded entrants, 101 were girls, 29.0% against 23.0% across England, and Bromley's girls have entered Physics at a higher rate than England's in each of the last five years.

That is who sits the papers, not how any school teaches them. Below: where Physics is taught in Bromley, the five-year trend, the split between girls and boys school by school, what DfE's value-added table can show once nine of its 22 rows are suppressed, and the GCSE maths grade each sixth form asks for.

Where is A-level Physics taught in Bromley?

Bromley is its own local authority, DfE code 305, so the borough and DfE's sweep are the same thing. Of 27 Bromley establishments with post-16 records, 22 have an A-level Physics row in DfE's 2024/25 value-added dataset. DfE's tables of exam entries and A-level students cover 24 of the 27 and show Physics entries at 20 of them: 404 in all.

Five have no Physics row: Baston House School, Darul Uloom London School, Harris Academy Orpington, London South East Colleges and Orion Coopers. In DfE's table of A-level students Darul Uloom London School has 1, London South East Colleges 2 and Harris Academy Orpington 23, and Baston House School is in neither table. Orion Coopers is the odd one out: its September 2026 entry criteria list A-level Physics (grade 7 in GCSE Maths, grade 6 in GCSE Physics) and its board list names AQA 7408, yet none of its 62 A-level students entered Physics in 2024/25. Those are different years and different kinds of source, so we draw no conclusion about whether the course runs now. A family weighing that school for Physics should ask it.

The 404 entries are lopsided. St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School has 95, Newstead Wood School 59 and Eltham College 33: together 187, or 46.3%. Outside those three no provider has more than 32, and nine of the other seventeen have fewer than ten. Each entry is one student sitting A-level Physics once; the value-added table below uses a smaller count.

Is A-level Physics growing in Bromley?

Yes, and faster than the sixth forms themselves. At Bromley's state-funded providers 348 students entered A-level Physics in 2024/25, up from 274 in 2020/21, while A-level students rose from 2,257 to 2,414 (+7.0%). Physics went from 12.1% of A-level students to 14.4%; England's state-funded share moved from 12.9% to 13.0%, so Bromley went from below the England share to above it.

The 348 counts every student who entered Physics, including 11 who entered no other maths or science A level; DfE gives both counts and the 11 are part of the 348, not added to it. The table covers state-funded providers only, which is why it differs from the 404 entries above: the 56 independent entries sit in DfE's school-level tables, and where the two overlap they agree exactly, because the fifteen state-funded schools' own entry counts add to 348.

Do girls take A-level Physics in Bromley?

More than across England as a whole, though still a minority. In 2024/25, 101 of Bromley's 1,292 female A-level students at state-funded providers (7.8%) entered Physics, against 7,658 of 141,405 across England (5.4%). Among boys the two are level: 247 of 1,122 (22.0%) in Bromley and 25,675 of 115,561 (22.2%) in England. Girls are therefore 29.0% of Bromley's Physics students and 23.0% of England's.

This is not one good year. Bromley's girls' rate has been above England's in all five years, by between 0.8 and 2.4 percentage points, and its boys' rate below England's in all five. These are counts of whole year groups, not a sample, but small enough to move: girls entering Physics went 80, 85, 66, 87, 101, so twenty students shift the rate by about a point and a half. The claim is the five-year direction, not any one gap. DfE's tables do not say why.

Which Bromley sixth forms do the girls and boys taking Physics attend?

The table covers the twelve providers with nine or more Physics entries. Each percentage is DfE's published share of that school's female or male A-level students who entered Physics; the count beside it is that share applied to the school's A-level students, which at these sizes is exact and matches DfE's exam-entry count for every school. The state-funded rows add to the 101 girls and 247 boys above.

Eight further providers entered between 1 and 6 students each, 30 in all, and their sex split is not itemised: Kings London (closed 27 March 2026), Bishop Justus CofE School, Farringtons School, Orion Eden Park, Babington House School, Chislehurst School for Girls, Charles Darwin School, and Harris Girls Academy Bromley.

Four state-funded schools hold 75 of the 101 girls: Newstead Wood School (31, 19.5% of its 159 female A-level students), St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School (18, 21.7% of 83), Bullers Wood School (13, 10.0% of 130) and Langley Park School for Girls (13, 7.9% of 164). At Langley Park School for Boys (4 of 120 female A-level students), Hayes School (6 of 125), Ravens Wood School (3 of 73) and Darrick Wood School (5 of 85) between 3 and 6 girls entered Physics, and at Harris Academy Beckenham none of 36 did. A girl taking Physics at one of those schools was one of a handful across her whole year group, though DfE's tables do not show how a school timetables the subject.

The register's gender label describes the main school, not the sixth form: GIAS lists St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School as a boys' school, yet DfE counts 83 female A-level students there, and lists Newstead Wood School as a girls' school, yet DfE counts 58 male A-level students, 28 of whom (48.3%) entered Physics. At three providers the two sexes' rates sit within five percentage points: Eltham College (30.0% of 20 girls, 34.2% of 79 boys), The Ravensbourne School (9.8% of 51, 8.3% of 60) and Langley Park School for Girls (7.9% of 164, 7.0% of 43).

What can DfE's Physics value-added score tell a Bromley parent?

DfE publishes a 2024/25 Physics value-added score for 13 Bromley providers and suppresses nine. One of the 13 has a 95% interval wholly on one side of zero: Bishop Challoner School, -1.50 on 7 matched entries. It closed on 4 July 2025, so it says nothing about a school a family can choose today. The other twelve intervals contain zero, so for every open Bromley sixth form with a published score the figure cannot be told apart from the national average. It is a progress measure for one cohort in one year, not a measure of teaching quality.

Suppression removes rows, not students. DfE's exam-entry table shows eight of the nine suppressed providers with between 1 and 6 Physics entries each, 30 in all: 7.4% of the borough's 404 entries, against 41% of the rows. The ninth, The Tutorial Foundation, is in neither school-level table, so its size cannot be bounded.

Against Chemistry and Maths, Physics intervals overlap at all 13 providers that publish both; against Biology they are disjoint only at Harris Academy Beckenham: Physics +0.34 (-0.33 to 1.01) on 12 matched entries, Biology -0.83 (-1.29 to -0.38) on 21. GIAS links that school and Harris Girls Academy Bromley to Harris Federation Post 16, whose centre row sits in Croydon's sweep, so nothing here is counted twice.

What GCSE maths grade does a Bromley sixth form ask for Physics?

Physics asks more of GCSE Maths than Biology does at most of the sixth forms that state both. The table covers the fourteen providers whose own entry documents we read for Physics, with the Biology line from the same document beside it. Of the nine that state a maths grade for both subjects without a route condition, five ask for a higher grade for Physics, 7 against 5 or 6, and none for a lower one; the other four ask for the same. Orion Eden Park words its maths bar for the Combined Science route only, so it is left out of that count. At Newstead Wood School the grade is 7 for both, but its document calls it an advantage for Biology and a requirement for Physics.

Source: Each school's own published entry requirements, course guide or prospectus, read on 16 October 2026. Eltham College states no maths grade and asks for grade 9 or 8 in Physics itself; St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School asks for grade 7 in Physics and either A-level Maths or grade 8 in GCSE Maths. The table covers these fourteen providers only.

Grade 7 is the commonest maths bar for Physics: seven of the fourteen ask for it outright and an eighth, Orion Eden Park, for students coming through Combined Science, against three at grade 6 (Bullers Wood School, Darrick Wood School and Bishop Justus CofE School) and one at grade 5 (Charles Darwin School). Most documents are for 2026 entry or 2026-27; two (Harris Girls Academy Bromley, Orion Eden Park) are for 2025-26 and Eltham College's file is named for 2027 entry. Grades can move between intakes, so confirm the current figure with the school.

Does A-level Physics need A-level Maths in Bromley?

In practice almost always. Of the 348 students at Bromley's state-funded providers who entered Physics in 2024/25, 325 (93.4%) also entered Maths, against 89.4% across England, and 130 also entered Further Maths. The 23 who did not are the exception: 11 entered Physics with no other maths or science A level, and 12 with another science or Computer Science but not Maths.

In writing the picture is looser. Ravens Wood School and both Harris schools make A-level Maths a condition of taking Physics, Langley Park School for Boys strongly recommends it, St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School accepts a student without it only on grade 8 in GCSE Maths, and Eltham College describes the two as complementary but not essential together. Our Bromley pages for A-level Maths, Biology and Chemistry cover the same sixth forms for those subjects.

Which exam boards do Bromley sixth forms use for Physics?

Among the providers cited here whose documents name a Physics board, OCR is the commonest. Six name OCR: St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School, Langley Park School for Boys, Bullers Wood School, Darrick Wood School, Bromley High School GDST and Chislehurst School for Girls, the last two giving OCR's Physics code, H556 (written H556A by Chislehurst School for Girls). Four name AQA (Newstead Wood School, Ravens Wood School, Orion Eden Park and Orion Coopers) and one, Langley Park School for Girls, names Pearson Edexcel. Where a document says only OCR we have not guessed the specification. A tutor needs the student's board first; our pages on OCR, AQA and Edexcel A-level Physics cover each in detail.

How does Leading Tuition work with Bromley A-level Physics students?

A first session establishes the sixth form, the board it enters and where the student actually loses marks. In Physics that is rarely evenly spread: a student who understands forces and fields can still lose marks across a whole paper to rearranging equations, unit conversions or reading a graph, and that is a maths problem to be taught as one. A tutor then works through past papers on the student's own board, marks against the published mark scheme, and sends parents notes after each session. In a group of under ten, as at nine of the twenty providers, there may be no parallel class to compare with, so we put more weight on timed practice and on the practical-skills questions the written papers test.

Students still at GCSE who are aiming for a sixth form's Physics bar can start on GCSE Physics and move across. Our A-level Physics tuition page covers the course itself, and our wider tutoring across Bromley page covers our other levels in the borough. Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026, and 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.

Frequently asked questions

How many students take A-level Physics in Bromley?

DfE's 2024/25 exam-entry table shows 404 A-level Physics entries across 20 Bromley providers: 348 at the 15 state-funded schools and 56 at five independents, one of which, Kings London, has since closed. St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School has 95, Newstead Wood School 59 and Eltham College 33, together 46.3% of the total. At state-funded providers the number rose from 274 in 2020/21 to 348 in 2024/25.

Do girls take A-level Physics in Bromley?

Yes, at a higher rate than across England, though they are still a minority. In 2024/25, 101 of Bromley's 1,292 female A-level students at state-funded providers (7.8%) entered Physics, against 5.4% in England, and girls were 29.0% of Bromley's Physics students against 23.0% in England. The rate has been above England's in each of the last five years. Four schools hold 75 of the 101 girls: Newstead Wood School, St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School, Bullers Wood School and Langley Park School for Girls.

Can a DfE Physics score tell me which Bromley sixth form teaches Physics best?

No. DfE publishes a Physics value-added score for 13 Bromley providers and suppresses nine. Only one interval lies wholly on one side of zero, Bishop Challoner School at -1.50 on 7 matched entries, and it closed on 4 July 2025. The other twelve contain zero, so for every open Bromley sixth form with a published score the figure cannot be told apart from the national average.

What GCSE maths grade does a Bromley sixth form ask for A-level Physics?

It varies, so check the school's own document. Of the fourteen providers covered here, seven ask for grade 7 in GCSE Maths for Physics outright, one more on its Combined Science route, three ask for grade 6 and one for grade 5, and the other two set different tests. Of the nine that state a maths grade for both Physics and Biology without a route condition, five ask for a higher grade for Physics, 7 against 5 or 6, and none for a lower one.

Do I need A-level Maths to take A-level Physics in Bromley?

Not always in writing, but almost always in practice. Of the 348 students at state-funded Bromley providers who entered Physics in 2024/25, 325 (93.4%) also entered Maths, against 89.4% across England. Ravens Wood School and both Harris schools make A-level Maths a condition of taking Physics, and Langley Park School for Boys strongly recommends it.

Why does DfE's Physics table leave out so many Bromley providers?

DfE suppresses a value-added score when the group is too small to publish. Nine of Bromley's 22 Physics rows are suppressed, which is 41% of the rows, but DfE's exam-entry table shows eight of those nine providers with between 1 and 6 Physics entries each, 30 in all against 404 in the borough. The ninth, The Tutorial Foundation, is not in DfE's school-level entry table.
