A-level Chemistry in Bromley is a school sixth form subject: all 24 of the borough's Chemistry rows in DfE's 2024/25 subject value-added dataset belong to school sixth forms, and 18 of them publish a score. London South East Colleges, Bromley's further education college, carries three GCE A level rows in that dataset and none of them is Chemistry. Two schools, St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School and Newstead Wood School, account for 210 of the 454 matched entries.

That shapes the practical question behind a search for a tutor. A Bromley student doing Chemistry is almost certainly doing it at their own school, often in a small group, and the published figures that look like a guide to quality mostly cannot carry that weight. What follows is where the subject is taught, what the numbers do and do not show, and what a Bromley school's own entry criteria ask for.

Where A level Chemistry is actually taught in Bromley

Bromley is its own London borough and its own local authority, DfE code 305. That makes the authority sweep and the town the same thing, which is not true of every place on this site - a Guildford page has to be carved out of Surrey. Filtering the dataset's school list on that code returns 27 Bromley establishments with post-16 records, and 24 of them return an A-level Chemistry row for 2024/25.

The three that do not are worth naming, because one of them is the institution a family is most likely to assume is the fallback. Baston House School and Darul Uloom London School are small independents with little or no A-level provision in the table. The third is London South East Colleges, the borough's further education college, with a campus in Bromley itself.

In this dataset the college returns three GCE A level rows - English Literature, Polish and the all-subjects total - and all three are suppressed. There is no Chemistry row. Its remaining rows are BTEC and VRQ Level 3 qualifications. Its own course finder, which lists categories from Access to Higher Education through T Levels and Science, offers no A level category at all. We are describing what those two sources show, not what the college teaches: that is a statement about the published record.

The consequence for a family is concrete. In many London boroughs a student who wants A-level Chemistry but cannot get a place at, or does not want, their own school's sixth form can pick up the subject at a general further education college. On the published record for Bromley that route does not appear, so the realistic options are a school sixth form inside the borough or a provider outside it.

Two schools enter almost half of Bromley's Chemistry candidates

Across the 18 Bromley providers that publish a Chemistry score, there are 454 value-added-matched entries. St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School holds 122 of them and Newstead Wood School 88 - 210 between two schools, against 244 shared among the other sixteen.

One number governs how the rest of this page should be read. Eleven of the 18 published providers have fewer than 20 matched entries, and the smallest has six. Descending, the counts run 122, 88, 36, 31, 24, 20, 20, 18, 15, 13, 12, 12, 8, 8, 7, 7, 7 and 6. A typical Bromley A-level Chemistry set is not a cohort in any statistical sense; it is a dozen students in a room.

Two points of care about that 454. It counts only students whose prior attainment DfE could match, so it is smaller than the number who sat the papers, and it is a different measure from the exam-entry counts Compare publishes. Our Bromley A-level Biology page is built on Compare's subjects-entered figures and gives St Olave's 85 and Newstead Wood 80 for Biology. Those are not Chemistry numbers and they are not the same measure, so the two sets should never be read across as though one showed a change in the other.

What Bromley's Chemistry value added can and cannot separate

DfE publishes a subject-level value-added score for A-level Chemistry with a 95% confidence interval around it. Before any of the figures below are read, it is worth being exact about what that column is. It is a progress measure for one subject, one cohort and one year, and it is not a measure of teaching quality: it records where a single year group finished against a national comparison, not how well a department teaches, and one unusual set of leavers can move it a long way. The score is the average grade difference against students with the same prior attainment nationally, which matters for what follows: the measure already adjusts for how able the intake was on arrival. A figure is only a finding when its interval lies wholly one side of zero.

On that test Bromley is mostly silent. Fourteen of the 18 published intervals contain zero. Four clear it, and they are set out below alongside the largest cohorts that do not.

The obvious frame to put on that table is that Bromley's selective schools lead it. The table says otherwise. The borough's two selective state grammars sit on opposite sides of zero: St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School returns 0.04, an interval of -0.16 to 0.25 that cannot be told apart from average, while Newstead Wood School returns -0.35 with an interval lying wholly below it. The one provider whose interval clears zero upwards is Eltham College, an independent school, on 20 entries. Three of the four rows that clear zero at all clear it downwards.

That is what the measure is for. Value added exists precisely so that a school cannot score well simply by selecting able students at eleven, and a borough with two grammars landing either side of the line is the statistic doing its job rather than failing.

The reason so little separates is arithmetic rather than teaching. The width of each interval tracks the size of the cohort behind it: St Olave's 122 entries buy an interval about 0.41 grades wide, while Bishop Challoner's eight buy one of about 1.59. At the cohort sizes most Bromley sixth forms run, a Chemistry department would have to be extraordinarily far from average before the published figure could say so. For eleven of the 18, the honest reading is that the dataset does not distinguish them.

So the figure is a poor way to choose a sixth form for Chemistry, and a reasonable way to notice that a question is worth asking. A score whose interval clears zero is worth raising at an open evening. One that does not is, on its own, not evidence of anything.

Biology finally clicked

My daughter was struggling to see how the different topics in A-level Biology connected to each other before her mocks. A few sessions focused on exam technique and past papers made a real difference to her confidence.

The two Bromley schools whose sixth form Chemistry is counted in Croydon

Two Bromley schools in this dataset do not run their sixth form alone. GIAS records a Sixth Form Centre School link from Harris Academy Beckenham and from Harris Girls Academy Bromley to Harris Federation Post 16, URN 135416 - an establishment whose own GIAS record places it in Croydon. That centre carries ten such links in total, across six London boroughs.

The centre publishes its own A-level Chemistry row: 123 value-added-matched entries. Its member schools publish rows too, and they can be added up. Nine of the ten publish a matched Chemistry count - Harris Academy Merton 22, Harris City Academy Crystal Palace 21, Harris Academy South Norwood 16, Harris Academy Beckenham 15, Harris Academy Purley 14, Harris Invictus Academy Croydon 13, Harris Girls' Academy East Dulwich 10 and Harris Girls Academy Bromley 7 - which comes to 118.

Only one member enters Chemistry without a published matched count: Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich, whose value-added row is suppressed. Compare puts its A-level Chemistry exam entries at five. The tenth member, Harris Academy Beulah Hill, has no 16-to-18 data at all in Compare. The two counts are different measures, so they are not subtracted from one another; they agree. The same caution applies at the centre, where Compare gives 127 A-level Chemistry exam entries against the 123 matched entries in the value-added table.

For a Bromley parent the practical point is about reading the small numbers, not about arithmetic. Harris Girls Academy Bromley's Chemistry row shows seven matched entries and a score of -0.94 on an interval running from -1.79 to -0.09; Harris Academy Beckenham shows 15. Taken alone those look like two very small, struggling departments. Taken with the link record, they are two schools inside a federation post-16 operation whose combined Chemistry entry is more than a hundred. Neither reading is the whole picture, and a parent at either school is entitled to ask how and where the teaching is actually delivered.

The maths grade a Bromley sixth form attaches to Chemistry

Newstead Wood School, the borough's second largest Chemistry provider, publishes its GCSE requirements subject by subject. Its Chemistry row asks for GCSE Chemistry at triple award, or grade 8-7 in double-award Science including grade 8 in the Chemistry modules. The sentence the school adds after that is the one worth reading: Since 20% of the marks at A Level require mathematical skills at a higher level GCSE, a Grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics is an advantage.

The same page attaches 10% to Biology and 40% to Physics, and its wording hardens as the share rises - for Physics a grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics stops being an advantage and becomes is required. Those floors are set by DfE's subject content for A-level sciences rather than by the school; our Leeds A-level Chemistry page covers how they work across the three sciences. What matters here is that a Bromley school has read them and set its own bar accordingly, in public, where a parent can check it.

Underneath that sits the school's general sixth form threshold: eight GCSE passes, four at grade 6 or above and four at grade 7 or above, with a minimum grade 7 in both Mathematics and English. The practical consequence for a Bromley student is that it is possible to clear a school's Biology bar and miss its Chemistry one on the maths alone. Criteria and exam boards differ across the borough, and our Bromley A-level Biology page sets them out provider by provider.

How Leading Tuition works with Bromley A level Chemistry students

We start from the sixth form the student is actually in, because in Bromley that varies more than the subject does. A student in St Olave's 122-entry cohort and a student in a set of seven are doing the same specification under very different conditions: the first has a department with parallel classes and a full set of past-paper routines, the second may be the only person in the room taking a particular question style seriously.

A first session establishes which specification the school enters and where the student actually loses marks - almost always a split between recall, the quantitative work and the extended six-mark answers, and almost never evenly. Chemistry rewards diagnosis because its failure modes are so distinct: a student who can write a flawless mechanism and still cannot finish a titration calculation needs maths teaching, not more organic chemistry.

From there a tutor works through past papers on the board the school enters, marks against the published mark scheme rather than an impression, and sends parents notes after each session. Where a student is in a very small set, we put more weight on exam technique and timing, because a small department often has less capacity to run full mock cycles. Where a student is in a large one, the work is usually about not getting lost in it.

Students who are still at GCSE and aiming at a sixth form's Chemistry requirement can start on GCSE Chemistry and move across. Our subject page for A-level Chemistry tuition covers the course itself, and our wider tutoring across Bromley page covers our other levels in the borough. Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026, and 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you study A-level Chemistry in Bromley?

In a school sixth form. Twenty-four of the 27 Bromley establishments in DfE's 2024/25 subject value-added dataset return an A-level Chemistry row, and every one of them is a school. London South East Colleges, the borough's further education college, returns three GCE A level rows in that dataset - English Literature, Polish and the all-subjects total - and no Chemistry row, and its own course finder offers no A level category at all. Its other rows there are BTEC and VRQ Level 3 qualifications.

How many students take A-level Chemistry in Bromley?

The 18 Bromley providers that publish a Chemistry score between them account for 454 value-added-matched entries in 2024/25. That figure counts only students with matched prior attainment, so it is not the same measure as the exam-entry counts published on Compare. Six further Bromley providers return a suppressed Chemistry row, meaning the cohort was too small to publish. The spread is steep: 11 of the 18 published providers have fewer than 20 matched entries.

Which Bromley school has the largest A-level Chemistry cohort?

St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School, with 122 value-added-matched entries in 2024/25. Newstead Wood School is second with 88. Between them those two schools hold 210 of the borough's 454 matched Chemistry entries, which is almost half. The third largest, Langley Park School for Girls, has 36. After that the numbers fall away quickly, and the smallest published Bromley Chemistry cohort is six.

Can a DfE Chemistry score tell me which Bromley sixth form teaches Chemistry best?

Rarely, because most Bromley Chemistry cohorts are too small for the measure to separate them. Fourteen of the 18 published Bromley intervals contain zero, which means the figure cannot be distinguished from the national average. Only four clear it: Eltham College above, and Newstead Wood School, Bishop Challoner School and Harris Girls Academy Bromley below. Value added also already adjusts for prior attainment, so a selective intake is not supposed to raise it.

Do Bromley's grammar schools score higher for A-level Chemistry?

Not on this measure. Bromley's two selective state grammars land on opposite sides of zero. St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School returns 0.04 with an interval of -0.16 to 0.25, which contains zero and so cannot be told apart from average. Newstead Wood School returns -0.35 with an interval of -0.59 to -0.11, which lies entirely below it. Any claim that selective schools lead the borough on Chemistry value added is contradicted by the borough's own table.

Why is my child's Bromley sixth form Chemistry counted in Croydon?

Because two Bromley schools are members of a sixth form centre in another borough. GIAS records a Sixth Form Centre School link from both Harris Academy Beckenham and Harris Girls Academy Bromley to Harris Federation Post 16, URN 135416, which sits in Croydon. That centre publishes its own Chemistry row of 123 matched entries, and the nine member schools that publish a matched count sum to 118. Both Bromley schools also publish their own Chemistry rows, of 15 and 7 entries.

What GCSE grades does a Bromley sixth form want for A-level Chemistry?

It varies by school, so check the sixth form's own published criteria. Newstead Wood School, the borough's second largest Chemistry provider, asks for GCSE Chemistry at triple award or grade 8-7 in double-award Science including grade 8 in the Chemistry modules, on top of a general bar of eight GCSE passes with a minimum grade 7 in both Mathematics and English. Our Bromley A-level Biology page tables the entry criteria and exam board provider by provider across the borough.

Does a Bromley sixth form ask for a maths grade for A-level Chemistry?

At least one says so explicitly. Newstead Wood School attaches a maths expectation to each science in its published GCSE requirements, and for Chemistry writes that since 20% of the marks at A Level require mathematical skills at a higher level GCSE, a grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics is an advantage. Against Physics, where the share is 40%, the same page says a grade 7 is required instead. That school's general sixth form bar is already a minimum grade 7 in both Mathematics and English. Criteria differ across the borough, so check the sixth form's own published list.
