GCSE Chemistry and Combined Science Are Different Qualifications, Not Different Tiers of the Same One

A parent searching for a GCSE Chemistry tutor in Cambridge is often really asking about one of two different qualifications, and which one applies changes what a tutor needs to teach. Separate Chemistry is sat as one of three individual sciences, alongside Biology and Physics, each examined and graded on its own on the standard 9 to 1 scale. AQA’s version of the qualification carries the specification code 8462, confirmed directly on AQA’s own GCSE Chemistry specification page. Pearson Edexcel’s equivalent carries the code 1CH0, OCR’s Gateway Science version is J248, and OCR’s Twenty First Century Science version is J258 — all four confirmed directly against each exam board’s own qualification pages, not assumed from a list.

Combined Science is a different product, not a shorter Chemistry course. Pupils on this route study all three sciences — Ofqual’s own guidance on the reformed GCSE sciences confirms that pupils taking combined science “will study all three sciences and they'll cover roughly two thirds of the content of the single GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics” — but sit it as a single double-award qualification, examined across all three subjects together rather than as three separate paper sets. AQA’s version, Combined Science: Trilogy, carries the code 8464; Edexcel’s is 1SC0; OCR’s Gateway Science version is J250; OCR’s Twenty First Century Science version is J260. The result is not one grade but two: Ofqual’s guidance explains that combined science pupils “will receive an award worth 2 GCSEs. It will consist of two equal or adjacent grades from 9 to 1, giving 17 possible grade combinations – for example, (9-9); (9-8); (8-8) through to (1-1).” A pupil graded 6-6 has not achieved “a grade 6” the way a separate-sciences pupil would; they have achieved a double award pitched at that level across all three sciences combined, and their results slip carries no Chemistry GCSE at all.

The distinction matters directly for how a Cambridge family plans support. A pupil sitting Combined Science needs revision built around two exam papers drawing on Biology, Chemistry and Physics content together; a pupil sitting separate Chemistry needs a full, standalone specification, with its own required practicals and its own paper structure, alongside two more full sciences running in parallel. Treating Combined Science as “a lighter version of Chemistry”, or treating separate-Chemistry revision material as adequate cover for the combined award, is one of the most common ways GCSE science support goes wrong for a family that has not first checked which qualification their child’s own school has actually entered them for.

How Many Cambridge Pupils Actually Sit Separate GCSE Chemistry?

Department for Education school performance data publishes each Cambridge secondary’s own subject entry numbers — not a rate, but the actual count of pupils entered for each GCSE. Five of the eight schools — Parkside, Trumpington, St Bede’s, North Cambridge Academy and Coleridge — enter exactly the same number of pupils for Chemistry as for Biology and Physics. At those five, the raw entry counts alone cannot single out one subject as harder to get a place on than another. The other three — Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology, Chesterton Community College and The Netherhall School — enter fewer pupils for Chemistry than for Biology, by margins of 1, 1 and 5 pupils respectively, and Physics never falls below Chemistry at any of the eight schools. Is Chemistry the Reason Some Cambridge Schools’ Triple-Science Rate Is Lower Than Their Biology Entries Suggest?

Department for Education’s headline measure for this — “entering for biology, chemistry & physics” — reports one combined percentage per school, built from pupils entered for all three sciences together. That single number hides which of the three subjects, if any, is actually the constraint. Comparing each school’s own Biology, Chemistry and Physics entries side by side, as the table above does, answers the question directly for Cambridge’s eight state secondaries: at every school where the three counts differ, Chemistry is the one with fewer pupils — never Biology, and never behind Physics alone.

Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology enters 103 pupils for Biology against 102 apiece for Chemistry and Physics — a single-pupil gap, but a gap all the same, and its published 98.1% rate is built from the 102, not the 103. Chesterton Community College shows the same shape at a larger school: 80 pupils sit Biology and 80 sit Physics, but only 79 sit Chemistry, and Chesterton’s published rate of 41.6% is exactly 79 divided by its 190-pupil cohort — not 80 divided by 190, which would round to 42.1%. The Netherhall School carries the widest gap of the eight: 60 pupils sit Biology, but only 55 sit Chemistry and only 55 sit Physics, so Netherhall’s published rate of 30.9% is built from the smaller number twice over, not from its highest-entered science.

St Bede’s Inter-Church School is a useful caution against reading too much into matching entry counts. It enters exactly 64 pupils for each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics — on the entries alone, indistinguishable from Trumpington Community College’s clean three-way tie at 32. Yet DfE’s own published combined-sciences rate for St Bede’s is 35.0% of its 180-pupil cohort, which works out to 63 pupils, not 64. The one-pupil difference means at least one of the 64 pupils entered for each science did not sit all three together — a pupil who, for instance, took Biology and Chemistry but not Physics, offset by a different pupil who took Chemistry and Physics but not Biology. Three matching subject totals do not guarantee one identical group of pupils sat all three; DfE’s combined measure counts pupils, not entries, and the two do not always move together.

None of these gaps is large — the biggest is five pupils at Netherhall — and matching entries at the other five schools may simply reflect timetabling rather than anything about Chemistry as a subject. But the direction is one-way across Cambridge’s own data: at every school where the three sciences are entered in different numbers, Chemistry is the one a school enters fewer pupils for, never Biology and never behind Physics alone — matching, at each of these three schools, the DfE-published rate confirmed above, though that is a fact about these three schools’ own pupil overlap, not a general rule about how DfE’s combined measure is built.

Why Isn’t Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology a Fifth Comparable School?

Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology’s Chemistry count looks like the outright winner in the table above, and by raw numbers it is — but CAST is not a fifth comparable data point alongside the other seven, in a way that matters for how a family should read it. CAST is a University Technical College, a specialist STEM school, admitting its main cohort at age 13 rather than the age 11 typical of Chesterton, Parkside and the rest, and it sits 2.39 miles from the city centre on the Department for Education’s own location-based school search — within the same three-mile radius as the other seven, but a different kind of school inside it.

CAST’s current Admission Policy sets a Published Admission Number of 104 places for its main Year 9 intake and a minimum of 30 for Year 12 external applicants — but the policy sets no Published Admission Number for Year 10 at all. A family wanting a Year 10 place applies through the Academy’s ordinary in-year admissions process, the same route used for a mid-cycle move into Year 9 or Year 11, rather than a second scheduled intake round. That matters for how long a pupil in CAST’s GCSE cohort has actually spent at the school: a pupil admitted through the scheduled Year 9 round has had at most three years there before sitting GCSEs, not the five years typical of an age-11 intake at Chesterton or Parkside — but a pupil who joined through in-year admission in Year 10 could have arrived at almost any point in the two years before GCSEs, and no single figure describes how long every such pupil has actually been enrolled.

Where Does Chemistry Sit in Attainment 8? There’s No Chemistry Element

A figure quoted for a Cambridge school’s “Attainment 8 Chemistry element” is describing something that does not exist. Attainment 8 measures a pupil’s average achievement across eight qualification slots, and the Department for Education’s own methodology sets out exactly what they are: “English language; English literature (double weighted providing both English language and English literature are taken); maths (double weighted); three further qualifications that count in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc); and three further qualifications that can be GCSE qualifications.” Science has no dedicated, double-weighted slot the way English and maths do. A Chemistry result — separate or as part of Combined Science — can only count inside the three EBacc slots, alongside a language and history or geography, or inside the three open slots, never as a slot of its own.

Chemistry still has a defined route into the EBacc measure, and it works the same way whichever science qualification a pupil sits. The Department for Education’s own EBacc guidance sets out the choice: “GCSE combined science – pupils take 2 GCSEs that cover the 3 main sciences, biology, chemistry and physics” or “3 single sciences at GCSE – pupils choose 3 subjects from biology, chemistry, physics and computer science.” A pupil on the Combined Science route at Coleridge Community College satisfies the EBacc science requirement just as fully as a pupil sitting separate Chemistry at Parkside Community College; the qualification differs, but the EBacc credit for science does not.

None of the figures on this page are Progress 8 scores, because none exist for this cohort. The Department for Education has not calculated Progress 8 — for any school, in any local authority — for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 academic years: “It is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26. This is because there is no KS2 prior attainment data available to use to calculate Progress 8 when the relevant cohorts reach the end of KS4 as primary tests and assessments were cancelled in academic years 2019/20 and 2020/21 due to COVID-19 disruption.” In April 2024 the previous government confirmed there would be no replacement measure for either year. A Progress 8 figure quoted for a Cambridge school in 2025/26 is an older, pre-2024 number, not a current one.

The next-nearest state secondary beyond that group, Impington Village College, sits at 2.96 miles — not just a slightly longer drive, but a different local government district. Checked directly against postcodes.io rather than assumed, Impington’s own postcode, CB24 9LX, resolves to South Cambridgeshire district, while The Netherhall School’s CB1 8NN and Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology’s CB2 0SZ both resolve to Cambridge district. The three-mile radius and the district boundary point the same way.

Castle School, Cambridge, also sits within this same radius — 1.03 miles from the centre — but as a state-funded special school rather than a mainstream secondary, it falls outside the eight-school comparison on this page.
