GCSE German is a modern foreign language GCSE, offered in England only by AQA (8662) and Pearson Edexcel (1GN1), both first taught from September 2024. Cambridgeshire — the local authority covering Cambridge and a much wider area — saw its state-funded GCSE German entries fall 21.1%, from 526 to 415, between 2018/2019 and 2024/2025, according to the Department for Education’s own statistics API. Cambridge’s own eight state-funded secondaries account for 124 of Cambridgeshire’s 415 entries in 2024/2025.

GCSE German’s Board Landscape: Two Current Specifications, Not Four

Two exam boards currently offer GCSE German in England for first teaching from September 2024. AQA’s own specification page confirms its current code is 8662, and the board’s own page for the older 8668 code states plainly: ‘This is the legacy specification. Please visit GCSE German 8662 for the current specification (first teach Sept 2024).’ Pearson Edexcel’s own hosted specification PDF confirms its code as 1GN1 on its cover page: ‘Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in German (1GN1) First teaching from September 2024 | first certification from 2026.’

OCR’s own live GCSE qualifications listing carries no German entry anywhere on it — among languages, only Latin (J282) and Classical Greek appear. A plausible OCR German GCSE URL and a deliberately nonsensical control URL returned byte-for-byte identical pages this session, confirming that a resolving OCR web address proves nothing on its own; only the board’s own subject list, which enumerates real qualifications, is evidence of absence. WJEC Eduqas’s GCSE German, qualification number 60189277, is listed as Archived on the government’s own qualifications register, with funding approval ending 17 November 2025 — the same date Eduqas’s GCSE Spanish was archived — and Eduqas’s own current qualifications listing carries AS/A Level German and a vocational Global Business Communication award, but no GCSE German at all.

How Has GCSE German Changed in Cambridgeshire Since 2018/2019?

No Leading Tuition page has used the Department for Education’s statistics API to show a subject’s entries over time before this one. Queried directly for Cambridgeshire — the local authority covering Cambridge and a much wider area beyond the city — state-funded GCSE German entries ran as follows across the seven years the dataset covers:

Cambridgeshire’s German entries fell 21.1% across those seven years, from 526 to 415 — a county figure, not a Cambridge-city one. Over the same period and the same county, French rose by an almost identical margin in the opposite direction, 21.1%, from 1,290 to 1,562, and Spanish rose 72.0%, from 907 to 1,560. German is the only one of the three languages that fell across the period. That the French rise and the German fall land on the same 21.1% is a coincidence this page states plainly rather than explains: no source ties the two moves together, and nothing here should be read as one causing the other.

German’s own path was not a steady decline. Cambridgeshire’s entries fell in 2019/2020, rose again in 2020/2021, fell for two further years to 419 in 2022/2023, rose to 439 in 2023/2024, then fell to 415 in 2024/2025. A citywide reader should not assume the fall was a single smooth slide; it was a series of moves in both directions that happened to net out downward.

Which of Cambridge’s Eight State Secondaries Still Enter Pupils for GCSE German?

Department for Education school-level data for 2024/2025 — independently re-verified this session at each school’s own subjects-entered and additional-entry-and-achievement-measures pages, not carried over from the sibling French and Spanish pages, though every figure agrees with theirs — lets Cambridge’s own eight state-funded secondaries be checked one by one. This is a city-level table, not the Cambridgeshire county figures above. Sorted from the highest German entries to the lowest:

Six of the eight state-funded secondaries checked for this page entered at least one pupil for German in 2024/2025. St Bede’s Inter-Church School entered the most by a wide margin, 70 of its 180-pupil cohort, 38.9% — comfortably the largest German department of the eight. The Netherhall School follows at 37 of 178, 20.8%. Chesterton Community College entered 12 of 190 (6.3%), and three schools — Parkside Community College, Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology and North Cambridge Academy — entered 3, 1 and 1 pupils respectively, each under 3% of their own cohort. Coleridge Community College and Trumpington Community College recorded zero German entries in 2024/2025.

Every one of the six German-entering schools also entered pupils for Spanish in 2024/2025. Five of the six also entered pupils for French — Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology is the exception: it enters German and Spanish but recorded zero French entries, a finding the sibling GCSE French tutors in Cambridge page examines directly. This page does not know which single board, AQA or Pearson Edexcel, any of these six schools has chosen for German; Department for Education entry data records how many pupils sit the subject, not which specification.

Zero German entries at Coleridge and Trumpington in 2024/2025 is not the same claim as ‘these schools have stopped teaching German’. No school-level German entry data exists for any year before 2024/2025 — only the Cambridgeshire-wide county figures in the previous section reach back to 2018/2019 — so this page cannot say whether either school ever entered German pupils in the past. Both schools do enter pupils for French and Spanish, so a zero German figure describes a specific subject choice, not an absence of language teaching.

Cambridge City’s Share of Cambridgeshire’s German Entries

Combining the city-level table above with the county-level trend gives a comparison Department for Education does not publish as a single figure. Cambridge’s eight state-funded secondaries’ 124 German entries in 2024/2025 are 29.9% of Cambridgeshire’s 415 county-wide total — nearly double the 16.1% share of Cambridgeshire’s Key Stage 4 cohort that the same eight schools account for (1,104 of the county’s 6,836 pupils). Put plainly: Cambridge city supplies a larger share of the county’s German entries than its share of the county’s pupils would predict.

Two schools explain most of the gap. St Bede’s Inter-Church School and The Netherhall School together entered 107 of Cambridge’s 124 German entries — 86.3% of the city total — leaving the other six schools to account for the remaining 17 entries between them. A county-wide average for Cambridgeshire would therefore describe neither a typical Cambridge school nor a typical school in the wider county; German in Cambridgeshire is concentrated in a small number of departments, and two of the largest sit inside the city itself.

What This Means for Choosing GCSE German Support in Cambridge

Two facts sit alongside each other for a Cambridge family weighing up GCSE German support. First, the county-wide trend: Cambridgeshire’s German entries fell 21.1% between 2018/2019 and 2024/2025 while French and Spanish both rose, so a family choosing German is choosing a subject moving against the local grain, even though the specification itself — AQA 8662 or Pearson Edexcel 1GN1 — is newly reformed rather than declining in rigour. Second, the city-level picture: whether a Cambridge pupil sits German inside a well-established department of 70 pupils, as at St Bede’s Inter-Church School, or as one of a handful at a school entering one or three, depends entirely on which of the eight state-funded secondaries they attend.
