Leading Tuition's GCSE Biology tutors in Ealing are expert one-to-one online teachers who prepare students for the separate GCSE (9-1) in Biology. DfE's provisional summer 2026 table counts 852 Biology entries from 3,320 pupils at the 15 Ealing schools with 30 or more entries, and 820 of those entries reached grade 4 or above.

Ealing here means the London Borough of Ealing, DfE local authority code 307. The table below the first section lists every one of the 15 schools by name, with its Biology entries set beside the number of pupils in its year group, so a parent can plan from the school their child actually attends.

Our expert GCSE Biology tutors help students across Ealing at both Foundation and Higher Tier, building each programme around the student's own school, exam board and latest mock paper.

How many pupils at each Ealing school sit separate GCSE Biology?

Start with the entry, because every other figure depends on it. DfE's rows are for GCSE (9-1) Full Course Biology, the separate qualification. A pupil who takes Combined Science appears in different rows, so a school's Biology count is a count of its separate Biology entries and not of its whole year group. DfE's pupils-at-end-of-key-stage-4 figure is the year group beside it.

Twenty-one Ealing schools have a Biology total in DfE's summer 2026 table. This page sets a cut at 30 entries, which leaves 15 schools and 852 entries between them, and names the other six in a later section. The 852 entries come from 3,320 pupils, so across these 15 schools 25.7% of the year group was entered for separate Biology (852 divided by 3,320).

The share of pupils entered differs between schools, from 11% to 70% across the 15. These are counts of entries. They say which qualification route a school's pupils took and nothing about how well any of them was taught.

What this changes in our programme: the first question we ask an Ealing family is which qualification the child is entered for. A student in the separate Biology group sits two Biology papers of 100 marks each. A student on Combined Science sits a different qualification, and we plan that one differently. The percentages above are why we ask before we plan and do not assume.

Where the grades sit at each school: grade 4, grade 7 and grade 9 counts

Grade 4 and grade 7 are the two thresholds this page counts, chosen by us as the points at which a tutor's planning changes. Counting at grade 4 and above shows how many entries cleared the lower threshold, and counting at grade 7 and above shows how many cleared the higher one. Grade 9 is reported separately because DfE gives it its own row.

Across the 15 schools, 820 of the 852 entries were at grade 4 or above, which is 96.2% (820 divided by 852). Entries at grade 7 or above number 472, or 55.4% (472 divided by 852), and 169 entries were at grade 9, or 19.8% (169 divided by 852). Subtracting 820 from 852 leaves 32 entries below grade 4 (including ungraded).

The table gives each school's count. Eight of the 15 schools have no entry below grade 4: Ada Lovelace Church of England High School, Brentside High School, Ealing Fields Church of England High School, Featherstone High School, The Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School, Twyford Church of England High School, Villiers High School and William Perkin Church of England High School. Seven schools have at least one entry below grade 4 (including ungraded).

What this changes in our programme: where a school has few entries below grade 4, our sessions spend little time on recovery and move to exam technique early. Where the count below grade 4 is larger, the first block of sessions rebuilds the topics that cost marks on both papers before technique work starts. We read the child's own mock paper to decide, because a school's count describes the group and the child's paper describes the child.

Our expert GCSE Biology tutors help students across Ealing move from a grade 4 or 5 to a grade 6 or 7, working paper by paper through the topics a student's own mock results show to be costing marks.

The 348 entries at grades 4 to 6: what a move to grade 7 asks of the two AQA papers

Take the 472 entries at grade 7 or above away from the 820 at grade 4 or above and 348 remain: entries at grades 4, 5 or 6, or 40.8% of the Ealing total (348 divided by 852). That band is our planning frame, not a DfE category. DfE reports each grade separately; we group 4 to 6 because it is the band in which a move up to a 7 is the realistic target of a programme, and the questions that decide that move are the open-response ones.

AQA's GCSE Biology (8461) is used here as the worked example. It has two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes (105 minutes) and 100 marks, 50% of the GCSE each, so 200 marks in all and a little over a minute per mark. Paper 1 assesses topics 1 to 4: Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response; and Bioenergetics. Paper 2 assesses topics 5 to 7: Homeostasis and response; Inheritance, variation and evolution; and Ecology. Both are sat at Foundation or Higher Tier. AQA lists the question types as multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response.

For a student aiming at a 7, our planning treats the open-response questions as the ones to rehearse most, because they ask for connected reasoning and not a list of facts. AQA states that questions drawn from the required practical activities count for at least 15% of the overall marks, and that a minimum of eight experiments is required for single science. We cannot say which board each Ealing school enters; a family should check their child's school and tell us, and the same structure of work applies to any board's papers.

What this changes in our programme: sessions for a student in the 4-to-6 band are built around the papers, not around topics in isolation. A typical block takes one paper, sets the topics in order, then moves to timed open-response questions with the tutor marking against the mark scheme and showing where a sentence earns the mark and where it does not. The one-to-one format means the questions a student gets wrong decide what is covered next.

You can read the wider approach on our GCSE Biology tuition page, and the borough overview on the Ealing tutoring hub.

Our expert GCSE Biology tutors help Ealing students who sit at grade 5 or 6 build the extended answers that Paper 1 and Paper 2 reward, working one-to-one and online from the student's own mock paper.

Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

The six Ealing schools below the 30-entry line

A cut of 30 entries keeps the tables above readable and keeps small totals from being over-read. Six Ealing schools fall below it, and they are listed here by name with the two figures DfE gives for each. Together they made 49 entries.

Two points on reading this table. First, a total with no grade rows is a withheld breakdown, not a zero: DfE withholds the grade breakdown for Ayesha Siddiqa Girls School, Ealing Independent College and North West London Independent Special School, so no grade count is shown for them anywhere on this page. Second, a small Biology total beside a larger cohort tells you the entry route was different; it does not tell you how the school teaches. The page makes no further claim about these six schools.

For a family at one of the six, the useful number is still the cohort, because it is the size of the year group your child sits in. What this changes in our programme: we plan from the child's own entry. If your child's school enters few pupils for separate Biology, the child is in a small group, and one-to-one sessions are the practical way to get past-paper practice that suits that group.

How firm are these figures? Reading DfE's provisional release

DfE's key stage 4 release for 2025/26 was published on 15 October 2026 and last updated on 28 October 2026. DfE labels its data provisional: it is based on results supplied by awarding organisations, and approved result amendments that schools may have requested have not been applied when aggregations were calculated. We retrieved the school rows from DfE's subject school level exam data on 2 November 2026.

Two consequences follow. A school's count may move in a later release, by a few entries either way, so the tables are best read as a snapshot of summer 2026. And there is no Progress 8 to set beside them: DfE states that it is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for 2024/25 and 2025/26, because there is no key stage 2 prior attainment data for those cohorts. For this reason the page does not compare schools or rank them.

The source is DfE's open data, which anyone can query. The release page is on DfE's Explore education statistics service, and the paper structure above comes from AQA's GCSE Biology 8461 assessments page.

How our online GCSE Biology sessions work for a student at an Ealing school

Sessions are one-to-one and online, so an Ealing student joins from home with a shared whiteboard and does not travel across the borough. Our expert GCSE Biology tutors take the student's school, tier, exam board and latest mock paper as the starting point, and the first session sets out which topics on each paper come first.

A student whose school entered few pupils for separate Biology often has less past-paper practice available in class, so the sessions supply it. A student in a larger group gets time on the individual questions a class cannot reach. Leading Tuition reports that 91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and the Trustpilot line below is read from our public profile.

Families in Ealing also use our GCSE maths tutors in Ealing and GCSE English tutors in Ealing alongside Biology, since the maths skills in the Biology papers and the extended writing in open-response answers draw on those subjects.

Ready to start? Our expert GCSE Biology tutors help Ealing students prepare for both papers, one-to-one and online, with each programme built around the student's own school and mock results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is separate GCSE Biology the same as Combined Science in these Ealing figures?

No. The rows count GCSE (9-1) Full Course entries in Biology, the separate qualification, and 15 Ealing schools with 30 or more entries made 852 of them in summer 2026, from 3,320 pupils at the end of key stage 4. Combined Science is a different qualification with its own rows, which this page does not use. A school with a low Biology count can still have many pupils sitting science; the count says which qualification was entered, not how many studied science.

Does a school's Biology entry count say anything about the quality of its teaching?

No. DfE's table counts entries and grades; it does not measure teaching. The share of pupils entered for separate Biology runs from 11% to 70% across the 15 schools, and that spread reflects which pupils are entered for the separate qualification. DfE also states that Progress 8 cannot be calculated for 2024/25 and 2025/26, so no value-added measure exists for these cohorts. Read the counts as a description of the qualification route, never as a ranking.

How many Ealing Biology entries reached grade 4 and grade 7 in 2026?

Across the 15 schools, DfE records 820 of 852 entries at grade 4 or above (96.2%) and 472 at grade 7 or above (55.4%), with 169 at grade 9 (19.8%). That leaves 348 entries at grades 4 to 6, which is 40.8% of the total and the band our planning frame treats as the main target for a move up to a 7. Thirty-two entries were below grade 4 (including ungraded).

Which Ealing schools had fewer than 30 separate Biology entries, and what does DfE show for them?

Six: Alec Reed Academy (20 entries, 174 pupils), Ark Acton Academy (15, 115), Ark Soane Academy (7, 167), Ayesha Siddiqa Girls School (3, 15), Ealing Independent College (2, 35) and North West London Independent Special School (2, 23), together 49 entries. DfE withholds the grade breakdown for the last three. A withheld breakdown is not a zero, and a small Biology total says nothing about a school beyond the count itself.

Are the summer 2026 GCSE Biology figures for Ealing final?

No. DfE published the key stage 4 release on 15 October 2026, updated it on 28 October 2026 and labels the data provisional: approved result amendments that schools requested have not been applied in its aggregations. A school's counts can therefore move in the revised release. This page states the retrieval date, 2 November 2026, so a reader can see which version the numbers come from.

How long are the AQA GCSE Biology papers and what do they cover?

AQA's 8461 specification has two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks and 50% of the GCSE, at Foundation and Higher Tier. Paper 1 covers topics 1 to 4 (Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response; Bioenergetics) and Paper 2 covers topics 5 to 7 (Homeostasis and response; Inheritance, variation and evolution; Ecology). Question types are multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response. This describes AQA 8461 only; a family should confirm which board their child's school enters.

Can online one-to-one tuition cover the required practicals in GCSE Biology?

It covers the part that is examined. AQA states that questions drawn from the practical activities count for at least 15% of the overall marks, and that a minimum of eight experiments is required for single science. A student does the experiments in school; in our online sessions the tutor works through the method, variables, results tables and graph questions that the papers ask about, using past-paper style questions and the student's own write-ups.

How does an Ealing student start GCSE Biology tuition with Leading Tuition?

A family books a free consultation through the button on this page or by WhatsApp. We ask for the school, the tier, the exam board and the latest mock result, then plan one-to-one online sessions around the two papers. Leading Tuition reports that 91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and sessions are online only, so an Ealing student can join from home.
