Eleven Kingston sixth forms enter A-level Biology; DfE's progress data cannot pick one out, but their exam boards, GCSE grades and application routes differ.
Book a Free ConsultationKingston upon Thames has eleven sixth forms that enter students for A-level Biology, and the Department for Education's 2024/25 value-added data cannot pick one out: no interval sits wholly above zero, two sit wholly below it and nine span it, across 354 matched entries. What separates the eleven is the exam board, the GCSE grade each asks for and the route an outside student takes to apply.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Kingston upon Thames with the content, the practical endorsement and the exam technique of whichever specification their sixth form enters, and with the GCSE grade a sixth form asks for. Book a short call and we will build a programme around your child's own school, board and target grade.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppEvery score on this page is DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality. The published rows are set out below beside what each school says on its own website about its A-level Biology board, entry grades and admissions route, as read on 29 September 2026.
The table covers local authority 314, Kingston upon Thames, which is its own authority and not a district of a larger one, so a sixth form across the boundary in Richmond upon Thames, Merton or Surrey does not appear in it, no matter how close it sits. Filtering the Department for Education's institution-level subject value-added dataset, published on 23 April 2026, to that authority, to the GCE A level qualification and to Biology returns eleven rows for 2024/25. All eleven are published and none is suppressed. Our Kingston A-level Maths page explains what value added compares and why an interval that spans zero is not a finding, so that method is not repeated here.
The table is sorted by the number of matched entries behind each score, largest first, never by the score itself.
| Sixth form | Value added | 95% confidence interval | Matched entries | Interval vs zero |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Tiffin Girls' School | 0.09 | -0.14 to 0.33 | 79 | Spans zero |
| Tiffin School | 0.01 | -0.26 to 0.28 | 60 | Spans zero |
| Coombe Girls' School | -0.23 | -0.52 to 0.07 | 51 | Spans zero |
| Surbiton High School | 0.11 | -0.27 to 0.48 | 31 | Spans zero |
| Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form | -0.42 | -0.8 to -0.04 | 30 | Below zero |
| The Holy Cross School | -0.62 | -1.08 to -0.17 | 21 | Below zero |
| Kingston Grammar School | 0.37 | -0.1 to 0.84 | 20 | Spans zero |
| The Kingston Academy | 0.14 | -0.33 to 0.61 | 20 | Spans zero |
| The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre | 0.22 | -0.27 to 0.72 | 18 | Spans zero |
| Richard Challoner School | -0.01 | -0.59 to 0.57 | 13 | Spans zero |
| Southborough High School | 0.04 | -0.6 to 0.67 | 11 | Spans zero |
Source: Department for Education, institution-level subject value added, GCE A level, Biology, 2024/25, queried through the DfE statistics API on 29 September 2026. Every score is DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality; the last column shows only whether that row's own interval reaches zero, not a comparison with any other row.
The table supports one short sentence: no Kingston sixth form has an A-level Biology interval wholly above zero. Nine of the eleven span zero and two lie wholly below it, on 354 matched entries in all.
In all eleven rows an interval's half-width multiplied by the square root of its matched entries falls between 2.08 and 2.11, this page's own arithmetic on the published rows. Interval width therefore follows the number of entries: the intervals run from 0.47 wide at 79 matched entries to 1.27 wide at 11, and at those sizes nine of the eleven reach zero, so those nine departments cannot be told from an average one.
Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form's value-added score for A-level Biology is -0.42, with a 95% confidence interval of -0.8 to -0.04 from 30 matched entries; this is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.
The Holy Cross School's value-added score for A-level Biology is -0.62, with a 95% confidence interval of -1.08 to -0.17 from 21 matched entries; this is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.
DfE labels the count in these rows "Number of entries". Compare School and College Performance counts 357 A-level Biology entries across the same eleven schools and the value-added rows carry 354, so a row can be lower than Compare's count but never higher: one entry fewer at The Holy Cross School (22 against 21), The Kingston Academy (21 against 20) and Southborough High School (12 against 11), and identical at the other eight. This page calls the value-added figure matched entries.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Kingston upon Thames, whichever of these sixth forms they attend, teaching to that school's own specification and to the grade the student is working towards. Book a short call to talk through the board, the papers and the grades your child is working at.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppCompare School and College Performance lists 19 schools and colleges at 16 to 18 in Kingston upon Thames. Five of them (Spring School, Marymount International School, Dysart School, Bedelsford School and St Philip's School) carry no data, and Canbury School shows no A-level entries, which leaves 13 with A-level results. Two of those 13 have no A-level Biology row in DfE's dataset, Coombe Boys' School and South Thames Colleges Group, which leaves the eleven in the table. DfE's own location list for the authority holds a fourteenth name, Malden Oaks School and Tuition Service, whose six A-level rows are all suppressed and none of which is Biology. All eleven schools in the table were recorded as Open on the Get Information About Schools register when checked on 29 September 2026.
Coombe Girls' School and Coombe Boys' School share Coombe Sixth Form, which takes internal applications from both schools on one form and external applicants on another. Compare lists A-level Biology (51), Chemistry (44) and Mathematics (74) entries under Coombe Girls' School, and Coombe Boys' School has no A-level Biology, Chemistry or Physics row: its A-level entries are Sociology 19 and small numbers in a handful of other subjects, alongside BTEC entries.
The Holy Cross School and Richard Challoner School describe a partnership. Richard Challoner's 2026 sixth-form booklet is published "in partnership with the Holy Cross School", Holy Cross's application page tells students at either school to apply through their home school, and Richard Challoner's entry-criteria table lists the site for Biology as "HX/RC". Each school has its own Biology row: 21 matched entries at Holy Cross and 13 at Richard Challoner.
South Thames Colleges Group is one institution of four colleges (Carshalton, Kingston, Merton and South Thames), and DfE records it under Kingston upon Thames. Its only Biology row in the value-added data is for a BTEC National Extended Certificate in DfE's applied general cohort, a different qualification, so it is not counted among the eleven and no figure from it appears here. Kingston College's a Science list and an A Level+ list pages, read on 29 September 2026, list Access, BTEC and GCSE science courses, and none of its 16 A Level+ pathways is titled Biology. Merton College, in Merton and outside this page's coverage, lists a mixed pathway "with the option of A Level Biology".
The board decides which past papers, mark schemes and practical write-ups a tutor works from, so it is the first fact to settle, and the value-added data cannot supply it. The table gives each board as the school states it on its own website. Rows are in the same order as the value-added table.
| Sixth form | Board as the school states it | Fieldwork named on its own pages |
|---|---|---|
| The Tiffin Girls' School | AQA, Biology 7402, per its Biology page and Sixth Form Subject Guide | None named on the pages read |
| Tiffin School | AQA, Biology 7402, on its A-level Biology course page | A residential course at a UK field centre at the end of Year 12 |
| Coombe Girls' School (Coombe Sixth Form) | OCR Biology A, specification H420, on the Coombe Sixth Form Biology page | A Field Studies Council course on fieldwork techniques (biodiversity) |
| Surbiton High School | AQA, on its Biology A-level page | A compulsory residential trip to a Field Studies Council centre after Year 12 |
| Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form | OCR: its Biology transition booklet is headed "OCR A-Level Biology" and names the OCR AS/A level Biology A textbook | None named on the pages read |
| The Holy Cross School | Pearson Edexcel, on its course guide. Its three paper titles are those of Pearson's Biology B (9BI0) | None named on the pages read |
| Kingston Grammar School | Not found: no board is stated in anything we could read on its sixth-form pages | A Lower Sixth Biology Field Trip appears in its events calendar |
| The Kingston Academy | AQA, on its Biology page | Ecology and field investigations in the Year 13 content |
| The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre | OCR Biology A: its Subjects page links the Biology specification to OCR's H420 document | A field trip for sampling techniques, in a prospectus file dated 21_11_23 |
| Richard Challoner School | Not found on its own pages; its 2026 booklet is published in partnership with Holy Cross | None named on the pages read |
| Southborough High School | OCR Biology, on a Biology A-Level page whose text is set in images | None named on the pages read |
Read on 29 September 2026 from each school's own website. "Not found" means we could not find a statement in what was published and readable, not that the school lacks one.
Four of the eleven state AQA, four state OCR's Biology A, one states Pearson Edexcel and two state nothing we could find, so no board covers a majority. Pearson runs two Edexcel A-level Biology specifications, Biology A (Salters-Nuffield, 9BN0) and Biology B (9BI0), with different papers; the paper titles Holy Cross lists are those of Biology B. OCR's own H420 specification says that from September 2025 the board's name is Cambridge OCR, so either name on a school's page means the same board. Paper structure and content for each board are set out on our AQA, Edexcel and OCR A-level Biology pages and are not repeated here.
Five of the eleven name a field course or trip for Biology on their own pages, and The Kingston Academy lists ecology and field investigations in its Year 13 content. A tutor can work through the analysis and evaluation of field data with a student, but the residential itself belongs to the school. Pages that name no trip are not evidence that none runs.
Our expert tutors help Kingston students at both levels: GCSE Biology and Combined Science up to a sixth form's stated grade, and A-level Biology on the board that sixth form enters. Book a short call and we will plan the route from a student's current grade to the one their chosen sixth form asks for.

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
The stated bar runs from grade 6 to grade 8 across the schools that publish one, and the route through Combined Science differs more than the grade does. The table gives each school's stated requirement for A-level Biology, with the document and year it comes from.
| Sixth form | Separate GCSE Biology route | Combined Science route | Read in |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Tiffin Girls' School | Grade 7 in GCSE Biology, with all three separate sciences studied | Not available for A-level Biology: students with Combined Science GCSEs may apply only for non-science subjects | Determined arrangements for September 2026 entry |
| Tiffin School | Grade 7 or higher in Biology | An average of 7 or higher (8 or higher to take two or three sciences) | Admissions policy for 2027-28 |
| Coombe Girls' School (Coombe Sixth Form) | A 7 in Biology and a 6 in another science | 7:6 in Combined Science | Coombe Sixth Form Biology page |
| Surbiton High School | Grade 8 in GCSE Maths and in the relevant science for automatic entry; below 8, entry only after discussion with senior staff | Not stated | Sixth Form Entry Requirements page |
| Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form | Not read: the course booklet is published as a design that exposes no text | Not read | Course booklet, linked from its admissions page |
| The Holy Cross School | Grade 6 in Biology and in Chemistry or Physics, grade 5 in the other, and grade 5 in English | 7:7 in Combined Science, with grade 5 in English | Course guide |
| Kingston Grammar School | Grade 7 in the subject or a closely related one, with grade 7 in four separate subjects and grade 6 in Maths and English | Not stated | 16+ entry page, 2027 entry |
| The Kingston Academy | 6 in Biology | 6-6 in Trilogy (combined) Science | Biology page |
| The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre | Grade 6 in Biology and grade 6 in Maths | Grade 6 in both Biology components of Combined Science, and grade 6 in Maths | Prospectus file dated 21_11_23, linked from its prospectus page |
| Richard Challoner School | Grade 6 in Biology and in Physics or Chemistry, grade 5 in the third science, and grade 5 in English and in Maths (higher papers) | 7:7 in Combined Science, with grade 5 in English and in Maths | 2026 subject-specific entry criteria table |
| Southborough High School | Grade 6 in Biology (Triple Science) and at least grade 5 in English | 6-6 in Combined Biology | Biology page (images) |
Read on 29 September 2026. Schools can revise entry grades from one year to the next; the last column shows which version we read, and the school's current course page governs. Hollyfield's grades come from a prospectus file whose name carries the date 21_11_23.
Seven of the eleven state a Combined Science grade: 6-6 at The Kingston Academy and Southborough High School, 6 in both Biology components at Hollyfield, 7:6 at Coombe Sixth Form, 7:7 at The Holy Cross School and Richard Challoner School, and an average of 7 at Tiffin School. The Tiffin Girls' School closes the route: it requires all three separate sciences for A-level Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Surbiton High School, Kingston Grammar School and Tolworth state no Combined Science route in what we could read.
The grades are conditions of entry. They say nothing about the quality of the department, and this page draws no comparison between an entry grade and a value-added score. For a Year 11 student the practical question is the gap between predicted grades and the bar at the sixth form they want, in Biology and in the second science. A student on 6-6 in Combined Science meets the stated Combined Science grade at The Kingston Academy and Southborough High School, falls one grade short of Coombe Sixth Form's 7:6 and sits a grade below Tiffin School's average of 7. Our guides to doing science A-levels with Combined Science and to Combined Science grades set out how Combined Science double grades work.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppNine of the eleven state a route for applicants from other schools in the pages we read. The Kingston Academy and Southborough High School do not address outside applicants in the pages we read. No school we read guarantees a place, and each sets and publishes its own dates on its admissions page, so the table gives the route rather than a deadline.
| Sixth form | Who the school says it admits | Route and priority as published |
|---|---|---|
| The Tiffin Girls' School | A minimum of 20 places for external applicants, judged on the criteria applied to its own students (September 2026 entry). GIAS records the school as girls | External applications are handled in the period after GCSE results, and no Designated Area applies to sixth-form entry (school page) |
| Tiffin School | A co-educational sixth form of about 575 students; about 120 new students join each year, about 80 of them girls | Applicants within a 10km priority area are ranked by GCSE points (minimum 56 from the best eight) above those outside it; offers follow final GCSE results (policy for 2027-28) (school page) |
| Coombe Girls' School (Coombe Sixth Form) | Students of Coombe Boys' School or Coombe Girls' School apply on one form; external candidates apply on another | A minimum of five grade 5 GCSEs including English Language and Maths, plus each subject's own requirement (school page) |
| Surbiton High School | Welcomes external students, from local state and independent schools and from overseas | Career profiling and an interview at an assessment day; GCSE results go to the admissions team on results day (school page) |
| Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form | A mixed sixth form of over 270 students, welcoming girls and boys; external applicants register on its application system | Students already at the school have priority over external applicants (policy approved 2025); priority and final deadlines are published each year (school page) |
| The Holy Cross School | External girls and boys who are supportive of the Catholic ethos, whatever their own faith; students at Holy Cross or Richard Challoner apply through their home school | Year 12 intake of 130 with at least 10 external places (policy for 2027); if applicants exceed places, looked-after Catholic applicants come first, then baptised Catholic applicants (school page) |
| Kingston Grammar School | A co-educational school; it gives the 16+ ratio as approximately 200+ candidates for up to 50 places | A confidential school reference with predicted GCSE grades, a personal statement, and an interview if invited; there are no entrance exams (school page) |
| The Kingston Academy | Outside applicants are not addressed in the pages read | Application dates are published on its how-to-apply page (school page) |
| The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre | Students already at the school have priority; a minimum of 12 places is offered to external applicants, from 120 places for 2027 | A meeting with the Head of Sixth Form, predicted GCSE grades from the Head of Year, and GCSE points score on oversubscribed courses (school page) |
| Richard Challoner School | Admits external male and female applicants: a minimum of 10 places, from a maximum intake of 150 (2026 policy) | Its own Year 11 students have priority; the sixth form works in partnership with Holy Cross (school page) |
| Southborough High School | Fully co-educational, welcoming male and female students aged 16 to 19; outside applicants are not addressed in the pages read | Route not described in the pages read (school page) |
Read on 29 September 2026 from each school's own admissions pages; the policy year is stated where a figure comes from a dated policy.
The register's whole-school label is a poor guide to who can apply at 16. GIAS records seven of the eleven as single-sex, and five of those seven say in their own words that the sixth form takes both sexes: Tiffin School describes a co-educational sixth form, Tolworth a mixed one welcoming girls and boys, Southborough a fully co-educational one, The Holy Cross School admits external girls and boys, and Richard Challoner School external male and female applicants.
A student joining at 16 is not bound to the board they sat at GCSE, because the GCSE and A-level boards need not be the same, and a sixth form's own specification governs from the first lesson. The college route is narrower than the school count suggests: Kingston College lists no course titled A-level Biology, as set out above.

DfE's data cannot pick one out. Across the eleven Kingston sixth forms with a 2024/25 Biology value-added row, no interval sits wholly above zero, nine span it and two sit wholly below it, on 354 matched entries in all. These are DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and not a measure of teaching quality, and at cohorts of 11 to 79 matched entries nine of the eleven intervals reach zero. The differences that can be checked are the exam board, the GCSE entry grade and the way an outside student applies.
Seven of the eleven sixth forms state a Combined Science grade: 6-6 at The Kingston Academy and Southborough High School, 7:6 at Coombe Sixth Form, 7:7 at The Holy Cross School and Richard Challoner School, an average of 7 at Tiffin School, and 6 in both Biology components at Hollyfield. The Tiffin Girls' School does not offer the route: it requires all three separate sciences and lets Combined Science students apply only for non-science subjects. Surbiton, Kingston Grammar School and Tolworth state none in what we read.
Four state AQA (both Tiffin schools, Surbiton High School and The Kingston Academy, with specification 7402 named by both Tiffin schools), four state OCR Biology A (Coombe Sixth Form, Tolworth, Hollyfield and Southborough) and The Holy Cross School states Pearson Edexcel, with paper titles that match Pearson's Biology B (9BI0). We could not find a board stated for Kingston Grammar School or Richard Challoner School, so confirm it with the school before choosing past papers.
Nine of the eleven state a route for outside applicants. The Tiffin Girls' School offers a minimum of 20 places (September 2026 entry), Hollyfield a minimum of 12, and The Holy Cross School and Richard Challoner School a minimum of 10 each. Tiffin School ranks applicants within its 10km priority area first, and Holy Cross places baptised Catholic applicants ahead of others when places are short. Each school sets its own dates on its admissions page.
Not through Kingston College on what it publishes. Kingston College, part of South Thames Colleges Group, lists Access to Higher Education (Science), BTEC Applied Science and GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses, and none of the 16 pathways on its A Level+ page is titled Biology. DfE's only Biology row for the group is a BTEC National Extended Certificate with 18 entries. The group's Merton College, in Merton rather than Kingston, lists a mixed pathway "with the option of A Level Biology".
Five name a field course or trip on their own pages: Tiffin School (a residential course at the end of Year 12), Surbiton High School (a compulsory Field Studies Council residential after Year 12), Coombe Sixth Form, Kingston Grammar School and Hollyfield. The Kingston Academy lists ecology and field investigations in its Year 13 content. A tutor can go through the analysis and evaluation of field data with a student, but the residential belongs to the school.
Start with the specification code rather than the school name: AQA Biology is 7402, OCR's is Biology A (H420), and Pearson Edexcel has two, Biology A (9BN0) and Biology B (9BI0). Ask any tutor for past-paper experience on that exact code. Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Kingston upon Thames on AQA, OCR and Pearson Edexcel, and the first call settles which specification and grade the student is working towards.
Tell us the sixth form your child attends or is applying to, the board it enters and the grade they need, and our expert A-level Biology tutors will build a programme around all three.
