Entries by sex, 2024/25 progress scores, exam boards and stated entry grades for the eleven Kingston upon Thames sixth forms that enter A-level Physics.
Book a Free ConsultationThe eleven Kingston upon Thames sixth forms that enter A-level Physics recorded 279 entries in 2024/25, 190 from male students and 89 from female students. In the eight sixth forms that enrol both sexes, 30.5% of male students entered Physics against 8.7% of female students. Tiffin School holds 94 of the 279 entries, and without it the figures are 24.9% and 7.0%.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppEleven providers in local authority 314 have an A-level Physics row in the Department for Education's 2024/25 data. Ten carry a published progress score and one does not: Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form entered 5 students for Physics, and Compare School and College Performance says it usually suppresses a school's figures where 5 or fewer students are covered. All eleven were recorded as Open, in Kingston upon Thames, with a sixth form, on the Get Information About Schools register when we checked on 16 October 2026.
The first table gives each sixth form's A-level students in 2024/25 and how many entered Physics. A student sits one Physics A-level, so students and entries are the same count here. The percentage is DfE's own figure. The count is that percentage multiplied by the school's student total, and it reproduces the entry count Compare lists for the school at all eleven.
| Sixth form | A-level students, 2024/25 | A-level Physics entries | Share of its A-level students entering Physics |

Entry counts are the Physics rows of Compare School and College Performance, subjects entered at 16 to 18, A level, read on 16 October 2026.
Coombe Sixth Form is shared by Coombe Girls' School and Coombe Boys' School. DfE places the Physics entries, and 72 male students, under Coombe Girls', and Coombe Boys' School has no Physics entries.
The spread is wide. Tiffin School carries 94 of the 279 entries, 34%, and two sixth forms enter 33 each. Take Tiffin School out and 185 entries remain across ten sixth forms, five of which have 14 or fewer. Compare also records two AS Physics entries in the whole borough, against 279 at A-level.
DfE publishes, for each school, the percentage of its male students and of its female students who entered each A-level subject. Converted to counts, the 279 Physics entries are 190 male and 89 female. Each count is the only whole number that rounds to DfE's percentage, and the male and female counts add to Compare's total at every one of the eleven. Where a count is five or fewer, the table groups sixth forms instead of listing them one by one.
| Sixth form | Female students: entered Physics | Male students: entered Physics |
|---|---|---|
| Tiffin School | 95 students, 14 entered (14.7%) | 181 students, 80 entered (44.2%) |
| Coombe Girls' School (Coombe Sixth Form) | 92 students, 10 entered (10.9%) | 72 students, 23 entered (31.9%) |
| Kingston Grammar School | 61 students, 6 entered (9.8%) | 70 students, 24 entered (34.3%) |
| Five other sixth forms with both sexes: Richard Challoner School, The Kingston Academy, Southborough High School, The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre, Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form (grouped) | 189 students, 8 entered (4.2%) | 299 students, 63 entered (21.1%) |
| All eight sixth forms with both sexes | 437 students, 38 entered (8.7%) | 622 students, 190 entered (30.5%) |
| The Tiffin Girls' School | 177 students, 33 entered (18.6%) | No male A-level students in 2024/25 |
| Surbiton High School | 137 students, 11 entered (8.0%) | No male A-level students in 2024/25 |
| The Holy Cross School | 91 students, 7 entered (7.7%) | No male A-level students in 2024/25 |
| All eleven sixth forms | 842 students, 89 entered (10.6%) | 622 students, 190 entered (30.5%) |
Source: Department for Education, A level maths and science, school level, 2024/25 (percentage of students entered, Physics, by sex, with total number of A level students), queried through the statistics API on 16 October 2026. Counts are this page's own arithmetic: the percentage multiplied by the student total, each the only whole number that rounds to the published percentage, and each sixth form's male and female counts add to the entry count Compare School and College Performance lists for it.
In the eight sixth forms that enrol both sexes, 30.5% of male students entered Physics (190 of 622) against 8.7% of female students (38 of 437), so a male student was 3.5 times as likely to enter. The direction is the same at each of the three sixth forms listed one by one: Tiffin School 44.2% against 14.7%, Coombe Sixth Form 31.9% against 10.9%, and Kingston Grammar School 34.3% against 9.8%.
The contrast is not Tiffin School's alone. Tiffin School is the largest cohort, with 181 male and 95 female students, so it could dominate a borough figure. Without it, the other seven sixth forms give 24.9% of male students (110 of 441) against 7.0% of female students (24 of 342), a ratio of 3.6 to 1 where the eight together give 3.5 to 1.
The borough's female share of Physics entries, 89 of 279 or 31.9%, combines two different kinds of sixth form. Three sixth forms enrolled no male A-level students in 2024/25 (The Tiffin Girls' School, Surbiton High School and The Holy Cross School) and supply 51 of the 89 female entries. The other 38 come from the eight with both sexes, where female students are 41% of the students (437 of 1,059) and 17% of the Physics entries (38 of 228).
Names and registers can mislead here. The Get Information About Schools register records Tiffin School, Richard Challoner School and Southborough High School as boys' schools, yet all three enrol female students in their sixth forms, 95 of them at Tiffin School.
Whichever sixth form a student attends, our expert A-level Physics tutors help students across Kingston upon Thames with problem solving, the mathematical methods and the practical write-ups the course asks for, working from the department's own board. Book a short call to talk through the papers and the grade.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppThe same shape appears nationally. Across the 2,792 schools and colleges in this DfE dataset, 22.2% of male A-level students and 5.9% of female students entered Physics, and 23.9% of Physics entries were female. Among the 2,304 providers that enrol both sexes the rates are 21.9% and 5.3%. Kingston's eight sixth forms with both sexes enter more of their students in each sex (30.5% and 8.7%) and show a slightly smaller ratio, 3.5 to 1 against 4.1 to 1. What belongs to Kingston is which sixth forms the entries come from.
What this does not show. These are counts of who entered in one year. They do not say why a student chose Physics or left it, they say nothing about how well anyone did, and the sixth forms differ in intake, subject offer and size, which one year of counts cannot separate. In small female cohorts a few students move a percentage a long way. Tiffin School's own Physics page adds one local detail about where its students go next: it says roughly ten students a year go on to study Physics at university and around twenty go on to study Engineering.
The Department for Education publishes a value-added score for each department with a 95% confidence interval, and a score separates a department from an average one only when its whole interval sits on one side of zero. Our Kingston A-level Maths page sets out what value added compares and why an interval that spans zero is not a finding, so that method is not repeated here.
| Sixth form | Value added | 95% confidence interval | Matched entries | Interval vs zero |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiffin School | 0.26 | 0.02 to 0.5 | 94 | Above zero |
| Coombe Girls' School | 0.12 | -0.28 to 0.53 | 33 | Spans zero |
| The Tiffin Girls' School | -0.07 | -0.48 to 0.34 | 32 | Spans zero |
| Kingston Grammar School | 0.14 | -0.28 to 0.56 | 30 | Spans zero |
| Richard Challoner School | -0.09 | -0.57 to 0.4 | 23 | Spans zero |

Source: Department for Education, institution-level subject value added, GCE A level, Physics, local authority 314, 2024/25, queried through the statistics API on 16 October 2026 and sorted by matched entries rather than by score. Physics is subject 6GN6r in that dataset. Every figure is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality; the final column reports only whether that row's own interval reaches zero, never a comparison between rows.
One row clears zero. Tiffin School's score is 0.26, with an interval of 0.02 to 0.5 on 94 matched entries; the lower end sits two hundredths above zero. The other nine published intervals span zero, and none sits wholly below it. Tiffin School also holds 94 of the 271 matched entries, 34.7%, so the one clear result describes about a third of the borough's Physics students, and about two thirds sit in departments whose data cannot be told from an average cohort.
The smallest published cohort is The Holy Cross School's, at 6 matched entries and an interval of -1.43 to 0.46, which is 1.89 wide. Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form has no row; its 5 entries are at the size at which Compare says data are usually suppressed. Matched entries total 271 against Compare's 279: the 8 entries that differ are Tolworth's 5 and one each at The Tiffin Girls' School, Southborough High School and The Holy Cross School that DfE could not match to a prior-attainment record.
My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
The board decides which past papers, mark schemes and practical write-ups a tutor works from, so it is the first fact to settle, and the progress data cannot supply it. The table gives each board as the school states it, in order of matched entries.
| Sixth form | Physics board, as the school states it | Optional topic named (AQA only) | Where we read it on 16 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiffin School | AQA, specification 7408 | Astrophysics | Its Physics course page and its sixth form course guide |
| Coombe Girls' School (Coombe Sixth Form) | OCR; its papers are Modelling Physics and Exploring Physics | Not applicable | The Coombe Sixth Form Physics subject page |
| The Tiffin Girls' School | AQA | Astrophysics, taught in Year 13 | Its Physics department page and its Year 13 Physics curriculum outline for 2026-27 |
| Richard Challoner School | OCR Physics Specification A | Not applicable | Its sixth form Physics induction pack |
| The Kingston Academy | AQA | None named on the page | Its sixth form Physics curriculum page |
| Southborough High School | OCR Physics A, H556 | Not applicable | Its Physics A-level page, whose text is set in images |
| The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre | OCR Physics A | Not applicable | Its sixth form prospectus, a file titled 21_11_23 |
| The Holy Cross School | OCR; its papers are Modelling, Exploring and Unified Physics | Not applicable | Its sixth form course guide |

Not sure which board or optional topic your child's department teaches? Our expert A-level Physics tutors help students across Kingston upon Thames, and the first session settles the specification before a single past paper is set. Book a short call to get started.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppThree of the eight departments run AQA and five run OCR A; none names Edexcel. Weighted by matched entries the order reverses: the three AQA departments carry 143 matched entries and the five OCR A departments 87, so 62% of the 230 entries in these eight departments are AQA. Those proportions describe these eight departments only and are not a split of the borough.
AQA 7408 has two papers of 2 hours and 85 marks (34% each) and a third of 80 marks (32%) that includes 35 marks on one optional topic, chosen from Astrophysics, Medical physics, Engineering physics, Turning points in physics and Electronics. OCR Physics A has Modelling physics and Exploring physics (100 marks each, 2 hours 15 minutes, 37% each) and Unified physics (70 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes, 26%), with no optional topic. The two Kingston AQA departments that name a topic both teach Astrophysics. Our AQA A-level Physics page and OCR A-level Physics page set out what each paper assesses, so that detail is not repeated here. The specifications are published by AQA and OCR.
The practical endorsement is awarded separately from the grade, by a student's own teachers, so a tutor can rehearse the method and the write-up but cannot award it.
The table sets each Physics line beside the same school's Biology line, so that a Maths condition added for Physics shows up. It covers the eight sixth forms whose own published documents state a grade requirement that applies to Physics.
| Sixth form | Stated entry grades that apply to Physics | Maths condition, set against the same school's Biology line | Document read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiffin School | Grade 7 in separate-science Physics, or an average of 7 in Combined Science (8 if two or three sciences are taken) | No GCSE Maths grade named for Physics; its Biology line has the same grade 7 rule | Admissions policy for 2027-28 |
| Coombe Girls' School (Coombe Sixth Form) | Combined Science 7/6, or separate sciences with a 7 and a 6 including at least a 6 in Physics | Physics adds A-level Maths, which itself asks GCSE Maths grade 7; its Biology line names no Maths | Its Physics, Maths and Biology subject pages |
| The Tiffin Girls' School | Grade 7 in Physics, with all three separate sciences studied; Combined Science students may apply only for non-science subjects | No GCSE Maths grade named for Physics; a combination rule applies if three or four of Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taken (below) | Determined admissions arrangements, September 2027 entry |
| The Kingston Academy | Grade 6 in Physics for separate science, or 6-6 in Trilogy (combined) Science | Physics adds GCSE Maths grade 6 and says A-level Maths is strongly advised; its Biology line names no Maths | Its Physics and Biology curriculum pages |
| Southborough High School | Grade 6 in Physics (triple science) or 6-6 in Combined Science, and at least grade 4 in English | Physics adds GCSE Maths grade 7; its Biology line names no Maths and asks grade 5 in English | Its Physics and Biology A-level pages (page images) |
| The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre | Grades 6/6 in Combined Science, or 6 and 6 in separate sciences including a 6 in Physics | GCSE Maths grade 6, the same as its Biology line | Sixth form prospectus, file titled 21_11_23 |
| The Holy Cross School | Grade 6 in Physics and in Biology or Chemistry, a further grade 5 in Biology or Chemistry, or Combined Science 7:7, with English at grade 5 | No GCSE Maths grade named in either line; its guide says 40% of the written assessment covers mathematical skills | Sixth form course guide |
| Kingston Grammar School | A school-wide rule, not a Physics line: grade 7 in the subject or a closely related one, and grade 7 in four separate subjects | Grade 6 in Maths for every sixth former, so Physics adds nothing to it | 16+ entry page, 2027 entry |
Read on 16 October 2026. Schools revise entry grades from one year to the next; the last column shows which document each line comes from, and the sixth form's current page governs. This table covers the eight sixth forms whose own documents state a grade requirement that applies to Physics; it makes no statement about any other.
Three of the seven sixth forms that state a Physics line add a Maths condition their own Biology line does not: The Kingston Academy asks GCSE Maths grade 6, Southborough High School grade 7, and Coombe Sixth Form requires A-level Maths, which itself asks GCSE Maths grade 7. The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre asks Maths 6 for both subjects, and The Holy Cross School, Tiffin School and The Tiffin Girls' School name no GCSE Maths grade in either line.
The specification does not set the gate. Coombe Sixth Form, Southborough High School, The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre and The Holy Cross School all teach OCR Physics A, whose written papers carry the same mathematics share (OCR states that 40% of the marks in its written examinations assess mathematics at Level 2 or above). Their stated Maths conditions are four different things: A-level Maths alongside, GCSE grade 7, GCSE grade 6, and no grade named. The Holy Cross School's guide tells students the share is about 40%, and its Physics line lists science and English grades.
The most detailed condition in the borough is The Tiffin Girls' School's combination rule for September 2027 entry. A student who takes three of Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics needs four grade 8 or 9 GCSEs overall, with two grade 8 or 9s and one grade 7 among the three subjects; a student taking all four needs three grade 8 or 9s and one grade 7 among them. Maths, Physics and Chemistry is one such trio. The school's Physics row has 32 matched entries against 104 in Chemistry, and this page draws no link between the two.
Whether a student is shoring up GCSE Maths before Year 12 or working on A-level Maths alongside Physics, our expert A-level Physics tutors help students across Kingston upon Thames build the mathematical methods the papers assume. Book a short call to talk through where the gaps are and which board the sixth form enters.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppOn the stated lines alone, a Year 11 student predicted a grade 6 in Maths meets the Maths condition for Physics at The Kingston Academy and The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre, falls one grade short at Southborough High School, and does not meet Coombe Sixth Form's A-level Maths requirement, which asks grade 7. Schools can apply other criteria, so the sixth form's current page decides.
Four questions settle most of it. Which board does the department enter, and for AQA which optional topic, because past papers for a different option are the wrong practice? Is A-level Maths a condition, advised or neither, and which GCSE Maths grade does that need? How many students sat Physics last summer, and how is the current Year 12 group split by sex, since the figures above are one year's picture and the department knows the current one? And how does it timetable the practical work, since the endorsement belongs to the school?
Our expert A-level Physics tutors help students across Kingston upon Thames with the mechanics, fields, waves and particle physics of whichever specification their sixth form enters, and with the mathematics inside it: rearranging equations, logarithms, calculus and the handling of uncertainty. A programme starts from the board and, for AQA, the optional topic the department has chosen, then from the grade a student is working at now set against the grade they want. Sessions run one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard, so a tutor can work through a past-paper question on the student's own board and mark it against the real scheme.
For students taking Maths alongside Physics, our Kingston A-level Maths tutors page covers that subject's own local data. Students taking a second science can see our Kingston A-level Chemistry page and Kingston A-level Biology page, which cover the same eleven sixth forms, and Year 11 students working towards a sixth form's Physics grade can start with our Kingston GCSE tuition page. Our national Physics tuition service sets out how a programme runs across a full academic year, and our overview of tutoring across Kingston upon Thames covers 11+ and admissions support in the same borough.
Entry counts, sex splits and progress figures on this page come from the Department for Education's school-level data for 2024/25, queried on 16 October 2026, and from Compare School and College Performance. Each school's board and entry grades come from that school's own documents, read the same day. Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026.
In 2024/25 the Department for Education's data shows 279 Physics entries across eleven sixth forms, which is 19.1% of those sixth forms' 1,464 A-level students. Tiffin School has 94, The Tiffin Girls' School and Coombe Girls' School 33 each and Kingston Grammar School 30; Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form has 5, the smallest. Compare School and College Performance also lists two AS Physics entries in the whole borough.
Yes. Of the 279 entries in 2024/25, 190 were from male students and 89 from female students. In the eight sixth forms that enrol both sexes, 30.5% of male students entered Physics against 8.7% of female students, and the figures are 24.9% and 7.0% without Tiffin School. Three sixth forms enrolled no male A-level students and supply 51 of the 89 female entries. These are counts of who entered in one year, not an explanation of why.
It has to be checked school by school. Of the eight departments whose own documents name a Physics board, three run AQA (Tiffin School, The Tiffin Girls' School and The Kingston Academy) and five run OCR A (Coombe Sixth Form, Richard Challoner School, Southborough High School, The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre and The Holy Cross School). None names Edexcel. Ask the department before buying past papers, because AQA and OCR A papers are structured differently.
Of the eight sixth forms whose documents state a grade, only Coombe Sixth Form makes it a condition: its Physics page says students must also take A-level Maths. The Kingston Academy strongly advises it and asks GCSE Maths grade 6. Southborough High School asks GCSE Maths grade 7 and The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre grade 6. The Holy Cross School names no Maths grade for Physics, though its guide says about 40% of the written assessment covers mathematical skills, and Tiffin School and The Tiffin Girls' School name none in their Physics lines.
The 2024/25 progress data cannot answer that. One of ten published rows, Tiffin School's (0.26, interval 0.02 to 0.5, 94 matched entries), has an interval wholly above zero; the other nine span zero. These are DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality. What a family can compare is the board, the stated entry grades, the size of the cohort and who else is in it.
It entered 5 students for A-level Physics in 2024/25, and Compare School and College Performance says it usually suppresses a school's data where 5 or fewer students are covered. Matched entries across the ten published rows total 271 against Compare's 279, and the gap is Tolworth's 5 plus one entry each at The Tiffin Girls' School, Southborough High School and The Holy Cross School.
