A-level Chemistry is the science Kingston upon Thames enters most heavily: 414 matched entries across eleven sixth forms in 2024/25, against 354 for Biology and 271 for Physics. No Kingston department's progress score clears zero upward in that year's data, and the borough's lead over Biology rests on two schools rather than on the borough. This page sets out the eleven departments, their entry counts and the exam board each one states.

Which Kingston Sixth Forms Enter A-Level Chemistry, and How Many Students

Eleven providers in local authority 314 have a published A-level Chemistry row for 2024/25. All eleven are published and none is suppressed, which is not true of every subject in this borough: Coombe Boys' School has seven A-level rows for the same year and Chemistry is not one of them, so it is absent from the Chemistry table rather than withheld from it. Every one of the eleven was recorded as Open on the Department for Education's Get Information About Schools register when we checked on 16 October 2026.

The table is sorted by Chemistry entries, largest first, and carries each department's Biology entries beside them for scale. Both columns count matched entries, meaning entries the Department for Education could tie to a prior-attainment record, so they run slightly below a department's raw entry count. The final column says only which of the two subjects is larger at that school.

The spread is wide. The Tiffin Girls' School alone carries 104 of the borough's 414 matched Chemistry entries and Tiffin School a further 91, so those two departments hold 195 between them, just under half the borough. At the other end, The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre carries 9. That matters to a family choosing a sixth form for practical reasons rather than statistical ones: a cohort of 9 and a cohort of 104 are different teaching environments, with different set sizes and different amounts of subject-specific staffing, whatever either department's results look like.

Why Kingston's Chemistry Lead Over Biology Is Two Schools, Not a Borough Pattern

The borough total invites a conclusion it does not support. Chemistry's 414 matched entries against Biology's 354 looks like a borough that prefers Chemistry, and the figures are real, but the pattern behind them is not borough-wide. Chemistry exceeds Biology at six of the eleven providers. Biology exceeds Chemistry at four. At Richard Challoner School the two are level, at 13 each.

The arithmetic that settles it is short. Remove the two Tiffin schools and Kingston reads 219 matched Chemistry entries against 215 Biology, a difference of 4. The borough-wide difference is 60. So 56 of those 60 entries sit in two rows: The Tiffin Girls' School, at 104 Chemistry against 79 Biology, and Tiffin School, at 91 against 60. Those two schools are not a borough trend. They are two schools with unusually large Chemistry cohorts.

This is worth stating plainly, because the opposite reading is the easy one. A parent told that Kingston enters more Chemistry than Biology might reasonably infer something about the borough's science teaching, or about where local demand sits. The nine schools outside the Tiffin pair point the other way as often as not: at The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre, Biology runs at 18 against Chemistry's 9, double the Chemistry cohort, and at Coombe Girls' School Biology leads 51 to 44.

What the 2024/25 Progress Data Settles for Kingston Chemistry, and What It Does Not

It settles less than a league table would suggest. The Department for Education publishes a value-added score for each department with a 95% confidence interval, and a score separates a department from an average one only when that whole interval sits on one side of zero. In Kingston's A-level Chemistry data for 2024/25, no department's interval sits wholly above zero. Our Kingston A-level Maths page sets out what value added compares and why an interval spanning zero is not a finding, so that method is not repeated here.

Source: Department for Education, institution-level subject value added, GCE A level, Chemistry, local authority 314, 2024/25, queried through the statistics API on 16 October 2026 and sorted by matched entries rather than by score. Every figure is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality; the final column reports only whether that row's own interval reaches zero, never a comparison between rows.

Three rows clear zero, and the direction matters more than the count. All three clear it downward: Coombe Girls' School at -0.37, with an interval of -0.71 to -0.03 on 44 matched entries; Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form at -0.45, from -0.89 to -0.01 on 26; and The Holy Cross School at -0.65, from -1.19 to -0.10 on 17. A reader told only that three Kingston departments clear the statistical bar would reasonably assume three strong departments. The reverse is the case, and none of the remaining eight can be told apart from an average cohort at all.

Surbiton High School is the row that comes closest to a positive finding without reaching one. Its score is 0.38, the highest in the table, but its interval runs from -0.01 to 0.77. That lower bound sits below zero by a hundredth, so the interval spans zero and the score is not a finding. It is a useful illustration of why the interval is published alongside the score rather than the score alone: on 33 matched entries, a point estimate of 0.38 and Southborough High School's 0.21 on 13 are not distinguishable from each other, or from an average year.

Why You Cannot Read a Kingston School's Chemistry Board Off Its Biology Board

Start with the borough's largest Chemistry cohort, because it is where the obvious assumption fails. The Tiffin Girls' School publishes a page for each subject department. Its Chemistry department page says that at A-level the department follows the OCR A course. Its Biology department page says that department follows the AQA course. One school, two sciences, two awarding bodies, and 104 matched Chemistry entries riding on the difference. A family that bought AQA past papers on the strength of the Biology department would be revising the wrong specification.

The same page supplies an unusually direct cross-check on the entry data above. The Chemistry department describes itself as an extremely popular subject with over 100 students choosing Chemistry in Year 12, which sits beside the Department for Education's 104 matched entries for that department in the same period. The school's own account and the national dataset agree.

That is why the table below is worth printing. Once the inference fails at one school, a reader needs to know what each department actually enters rather than what it probably enters. Five of the eleven state a board on their own pages. Six do not, in the pages we read, and for those six we say so rather than guessing. No board here is inferred from a paper structure or a topic list, which is how a plausible wrong answer gets published.

Read from each school's own website on 16 October 2026. "Not found on the pages we read" records what our search returned and nothing more. It is not a finding about the school: a board may well sit in a document we could not reach, in a page whose text is set in images, or be given to families directly on request. Where a board is given here, it is taken from the school's own page rather than deduced.

Tested across all five, the honest conclusion is narrower than the Tiffin Girls' example alone suggests. Four of the five schools whose Chemistry board we could verify run the same board as their own Biology department. The point is therefore not that Kingston schools usually split their science boards, because mostly they do not. It is that one of the five does, that the one that does is the largest Chemistry department in the borough, and that nothing on a school's Biology page tells a parent which case they are in. The Holy Cross School makes the same point from the other direction: its Chemistry and its Biology are both Pearson Edexcel, while its Physics is OCR.

One local detail about practical work belongs here rather than in a general explanation. The Holy Cross School's sixth form course guide describes the practical endorsement for its Chemistry students as 12 core experiments, marked pass or fail alongside the written grade. That is the school's own description of work that belongs to the school: a tutor can go through the method, the write-up and the evaluation of a practical, but the endorsement itself is assessed by a student's own teachers. Our Kingston A-level Biology page covers how boards and entry requirements compare across these same eleven providers for that subject.

How Leading Tuition Works With Kingston A-Level Chemistry Students

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students across Kingston upon Thames with the physical, inorganic and organic content of whichever specification their sixth form enters, and with the written-paper technique that turns understanding into marks. A programme starts from two things: the specification the department actually uses, which is why the table above exists, and the grade a student is working at now set against the grade they want. Sessions run one-to-one online with a shared whiteboard, so a tutor can work through a past-paper question on the student's own board and mark it against the real scheme.

Where a student's department is one of the six that states no board publicly, the first session settles it: an exercise book, an assessment paper or a specification handout names the board within minutes, and the programme is built from that rather than from an assumption. For students taking Maths alongside Chemistry, our Kingston A-level Maths tutors page covers that subject's own local data, and Year 11 students working towards a sixth form's science grade can start with our Kingston GCSE tuition page. Our national Chemistry tuition service sets out how a programme runs across a full academic year, and our overview of tutoring across Kingston upon Thames covers 11+ and admissions support in the same borough.

Entry counts and progress figures on this page come from the Department for Education's institution-level subject value-added dataset, queried on 16 October 2026. Each school's Chemistry board comes from that school's own website, read the same day. Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Kingston sixth form is best for A-level Chemistry?

The 2024/25 progress data cannot answer that, and this page will not pretend otherwise. Across the eleven Kingston upon Thames sixth forms with a published A-level Chemistry row, not one has a confidence interval sitting wholly above zero. Eight of the eleven span zero, and the three that do clear it clear it downward. These are the Department for Education's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality. What a family can actually compare is the exam board each department enters and the size of the cohort a student would join.

How many Kingston upon Thames students take A-level Chemistry?

Eleven providers in local authority 314 entered students for A-level Chemistry in 2024/25, carrying 414 matched entries between them. The Tiffin Girls' School is the largest at 104, followed by Tiffin School at 91 and Coombe Girls' School at 44. At the other end, The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre carries 9 and both Richard Challoner School and Southborough High School carry 13. Matched entries count only those entries the Department for Education could match to a prior-attainment record.

Does Kingston enter more students for Chemistry than for Biology?

As a borough total, yes: 414 matched Chemistry entries against 354 for Biology and 271 for Physics in 2024/25. That total is misleading on its own. Chemistry exceeds Biology at only six of the eleven providers, Biology exceeds Chemistry at four, and the two are level at one. Take the two Tiffin schools out and the borough reads 219 Chemistry against 215 Biology, so 56 of the 60-entry margin sits in those two rows alone.

Which exam board does my child's Kingston sixth form enter for A-level Chemistry?

It has to be checked school by school. Five of the eleven state it on their own pages: The Tiffin Girls' School follows OCR A, Coombe Sixth Form enters OCR Chemistry A specification H432, Surbiton High School and The Kingston Academy both state AQA, and The Holy Cross School states Pearson Edexcel. The other six state no board in the pages we read, so ask the department directly before buying past papers. Never work it out from a paper structure.

Can I assume my child's Chemistry board is the same as their Biology board?

No, and The Tiffin Girls' School is the reason. Its Chemistry department page says it follows the OCR A course, while its Biology department page says it follows the AQA course. That is the borough's largest Chemistry cohort, at 104 matched entries, running two sciences on two boards. Four of the five Kingston schools whose Chemistry board we could verify do match their own Biology board, so this is a reason to check rather than a rule that the boards differ.

Why does no Kingston Chemistry department show a positive progress score?

Three Kingston rows clear zero in 2024/25 and all three clear it downward: Coombe Girls' School at -0.37, with a 95% confidence interval of -0.71 to -0.03 from 44 matched entries; Tolworth Girls' School and Sixth Form at -0.45, from -0.89 to -0.01 on 26; and The Holy Cross School at -0.65, from -1.19 to -0.10 on 17. The remaining eight intervals span zero, which means that year's data cannot separate them from an average cohort.

What should a Kingston parent settle before booking an A-level Chemistry tutor?

Three things, in this order. First the specification the department actually enters, because past papers and mark schemes follow the board rather than the school. Second the grade the student is working at now against the grade they want, which is what a programme is built around. Third the practical work, which belongs to the school: The Holy Cross School describes 12 core experiments assessed pass or fail alongside the written grade. Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help with the first two.
