One-to-one online GCSE Biology tutoring in Kingston upon Thames starts from the student's own school. DfE's provisional summer 2026 rows show 894 entries for the separate GCSE (9-1) Biology across the 11 Kingston schools with 30 or more, from 2,042 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4. Of those entries, 886 reached grade 4 or above and 713 reached grade 7 or above. Our expert tutors plan each programme from that school's row.

Our expert GCSE Biology tutors help students across Kingston upon Thames with the separate Biology papers, building each one-to-one online programme around the student's own school, target grade and exam board.

Which Kingston schools enter pupils for GCSE Biology, and how many?

The Department for Education published its Key stage 4 performance release for 2025/26 on 15 October 2026 and describes the data as provisional (DfE Key stage 4 performance, 2025/26). The rows below come from its Subject school level exam data set, version 2.0, filtered to the GCSE (9-1) Full Course qualification, the subject Biology and the Kingston upon Thames local authority. Each school carries two published figures: its entries for the qualification and its pupils at the end of Key Stage 4. We kept schools with 30 or more entries, which leaves eleven, listed in alphabetical order so that the order implies nothing.

The admissions policy column comes from the Get Information about Schools register (GIAS), read on 2 November 2026. Grade 4 and above, grade 7 and above and grade 9 are sums of the grade rows DfE publishes for each school; each school's grade counts add back to its entries.

The working for the bottom row is simple addition. The eleven entry counts sum to 894 and the eleven cohort counts to 2,042, so 894 entries were made by a cohort of 2,042 pupils, a share of 43.8%. The same share, school by school, runs from 18.8% to 100.0%. That spread is why the borough total says little about any one child: the row for the child's own school is the one to read.

What this changes in our programme: before the first session the tutor reads the school's row. Where entries sit close to the cohort, the student's year group is almost wholly inside these rows and the school's own mock papers are a reliable yardstick. Where entries are well below the cohort, part of the year group is not in these rows, so we confirm with the family which qualification, tier and exam board the student is entered for before planning anything else.

Where do the grades sit once a pupil is entered?

Summed across the eleven schools, the 894 entries fall as follows. DfE publishes no entries at grade 1 in these rows, so the table starts at grade 2.

GradeEntries across the eleven schools
Grade 9370
Grade 8212
Grade 7131
Grade 6118
Grade 545
Grade 410
Grade 36
Grade 22

The working: 370 + 212 + 131 = 713 entries at grade 7 or above, which is 79.8% of 894. Adding grades 6, 5 and 4 (118 + 45 + 10) to that gives 886 at grade 4 or above, 99.1% of entries. The remaining 8 entries are the 6 at grade 3 and the 2 at grade 2. Grade 5 or above accounts for 876 entries (98.0%).

Grade 7 and above is where the eleven schools differ most: the share of each school's entries runs from 44.0% to 94.9% across the eleven, and every school's own figure sits in the table above. Each school decides how many of its pupils to enter, so the share describes the group entered and nothing wider about the school.

What this changes in our programme: with 886 of 894 entries at grade 4 or above, the pass is rarely the target for a student in these rows. The target is the band above it, and we plan in two bands. For a student at grade 5 or 6, sessions concentrate on the open-response questions, where a mark depends on a sustained, correctly sequenced explanation. For a student at grade 7 or 8 who wants a 9 (370 entries reached it), sessions concentrate on the longest questions and on unfamiliar contexts, where a well-learned topic still has to be applied to something new.

How do the eleven schools group by GIAS admissions policy?

GIAS records The Tiffin Girls' School, Tiffin School and Surbiton High School as Selective, and the other eight schools in the table as Non-selective. For Surbiton High School the register gives its type as Other independent school and its gender as Mixed, and we describe the school by those fields only. Tiffin School's Year 7 admissions page refers to “access arrangements for the 11+ tests”, which we quote only as a statement about admission.

Non-selectiveThe other eight schools in the table4271,50028.5%283 (66.3%)102 (23.9%)

The working for the selective row: 177 + 176 + 114 = 467 entries from 177 + 180 + 185 = 542 pupils (86.2%). Grade 7 and above is 168 + 164 + 98 = 430 entries (92.1% of 467), and grade 9 is 119 + 96 + 53 = 268 (57.4%). The non-selective row is the remainder: 894 − 467 = 427 entries from 2,042 − 542 = 1,500 pupils (28.5%), with 713 − 430 = 283 entries at grade 7 or above (66.3%), 370 − 268 = 102 at grade 9 (23.9%) and 886 − 467 = 419 at grade 4 or above (98.1%).

GIAS records three of the eleven schools as Selective; the rows show who was entered, not why.

What this changes in our programme: nothing in the plan depends on the label. We set the target grade with the family at the first call and build from the student's own mock results, never from the table.

Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

What about students who are not in these rows?

The rows count entries for the GCSE (9-1) Biology full course. At the eleven schools, 2,042 pupils reached the end of Key Stage 4 and the Biology rows hold 894 entries, so 1,148 pupils at these schools are not among them. The families of those pupils still ask for Biology tuition, and the first call covers which qualification, tier and exam board the school has entered the student for.

Two schools sit below our 30-entry cut and are named here so that nothing is hidden. Chessington School has 18 entries from 120 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4. St Philip's School has a published total of 1 entry from 31 pupils, and DfE publishes no grade rows for it: that is a withheld breakdown, not a count of zero, and we say nothing further about the school.

What this changes in our programme: our expert tutors teach the papers the student will actually sit. A family weighing the whole of Year 11 can also look at our expert tutors for GCSE maths in Kingston upon Thames and GCSE English in Kingston upon Thames, which run on the same one-to-one online basis.

Our expert tutors teach GCSE Biology online to Kingston students whichever school they attend, starting from the exam board, tier and papers the school confirms.

How do two 1 hour 45 minute papers shape the programme?

The exam board varies by school, so we confirm it with each family. The facts below are for AQA GCSE Biology 8461 (AQA 8461 specification at a glance).

AQA 8461 is assessed by two written papers. Paper 1 covers topics 1 to 4: cell biology, organisation, infection and response, and bioenergetics. Paper 2 covers topics 5 to 7: homeostasis and response, inheritance, variation and evolution, and ecology. Each paper is 1 hour 45 minutes, carries 100 marks and is 50% of the GCSE. Both are available at Foundation and Higher Tier, and the questions are a mix of multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response. AQA describes the qualification as linear, which means students sit all their exams at the end of the course.

What this changes in our programme: we teach in two blocks that mirror the papers, topics 1 to 4 and then topics 5 to 7, and follow each block with timed practice at the full 1 hour 45 minutes. Because every exam is at the end of the course, there is no early paper to bank marks on, so the order of the blocks follows the student's own mock results rather than the order of the specification. Families comparing boards can also read our GCSE Biology tutoring page.

How do our online one-to-one GCSE Biology sessions work in Kingston?

Leading Tuition's expert GCSE Biology tutors teach one-to-one online, so a student in Surbiton, Tolworth, New Malden, Chessington or Kingston itself can work from home at a time that suits the household. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades. Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026.

The first call sets three things: the student's target grade, the exam board and tier the school has entered them for, and the mock or test results that show where marks are being lost. The tutor then works through the topics paper by paper, starting with the student's own questions, and keeps written answers to the exam's standard so that open-response marks are earned on the page.

Students who continue to sixth form can move on to our A-level Biology tutors in Kingston upon Thames, and the Kingston upon Thames tuition hub lists every subject and level we teach in the borough.

Our expert Biology tutors work online with Kingston students aiming at grades 7 to 9 on the AQA, Edexcel or OCR papers, taking the two papers topic by topic and then under timed conditions.

Kingston GCSE Biology questions answered

Does my child's school enter pupils for the separate GCSE Biology?

DfE's provisional summer 2026 rows list 11 Kingston upon Thames schools with 30 or more entries for GCSE (9-1) Biology. Entries per school run from 33 to 177, and the table shows each school's cohort beside its entries. Find the school in the table above, then ask it which qualification and exam board your child is entered for.

Are the Kingston grade counts final?

No. DfE's Key stage 4 performance release for 2025/26 was published on 15 October 2026 and states that its data is provisional. The school rows come from the Subject school level exam data set, version 2.0. We quote entries and grade counts exactly as DfE published them and add only sums and percentages, with the working shown on this page.

How many Kingston entries were below grade 4?

Across the eleven schools, 8 of the 894 entries were below grade 4: 6 at grade 3 and 2 at grade 2. That leaves 886 at grade 4 or above (99.1%) and 876 at grade 5 or above (98.0%). For most entered pupils the question is therefore the move from grade 6 or 7 to grade 8 or 9, and our Biology programme is planned around that move.

Why are Chessington School and St Philip's School not in the table?

The table lists schools with 30 or more entries, a cut we chose for this page. Chessington School has 18 entries from 120 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4. For St Philip's School, DfE publishes a total of 1 entry and no grade rows, so its breakdown is withheld rather than zero. Neither school is described beyond those published figures.

How is the AQA GCSE Biology exam split into two papers?

AQA Biology 8461 has two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks and 50% of the GCSE. Paper 1 covers topics 1 to 4 (cell biology, organisation, infection and response, bioenergetics) and Paper 2 covers topics 5 to 7 (homeostasis and response, inheritance, variation and evolution, ecology). All exams are sat at the end of the course. The exam board varies by school, so check your child's board first.

Do you teach GCSE Biology online to students in Kingston upon Thames?

Yes. Our expert GCSE Biology tutors teach one-to-one online, so a student in Surbiton, Tolworth, Chessington or Kingston itself can work from home on the papers their school sits. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026. Book a free consultation to talk through the student's target grade.

What grade 9 numbers do the Kingston schools show?

Across the eleven schools, 370 of 894 entries were at grade 9 (41.4%). The three selective schools account for 268 of them, from 467 entries (57.4%), and the other eight schools for 102 from 427 entries (23.9%). GIAS records three of the eleven schools as Selective; the rows show who was entered, not why.

One-to-one online GCSE Biology tuition with our expert tutors is open to Kingston families whichever school the student attends, starting from the topics they find hardest.
