Four different qualifications can sit under a school's general heading of “computing”, and they are not interchangeable on results day. GCSE Computer Science is the academic route, and it is one of four subjects — alongside biology, chemistry and physics — that can satisfy the EBacc science pillar. A Cambridge National, BTEC Tech Award or similar Level 1/2 vocational qualification in computing does not count towards the EBacc at all, whatever a school calls it in its own options booklet. GCSE Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a third, older qualification: it was withdrawn, with final exams in summer 2018, and does not appear in any current school's results. On DfE's own subjects-entered data, the academic route is filed under the generic label “Computer Studies/Computing” with qualification type “GCSE”, while the vocational route sits separately under “Computer Appreciation / Introduction” with qualification type “Technical Award” — DfE does not say in that table which specific vocational qualification a school has chosen, only the generic category it falls into, so the qualification-type column, not the subject name, is what actually tells the two apart.
Four exam boards currently offer GCSE Computer Science in England, each with its own specification code and Ofqual accreditation number, confirmed directly from each board's current specification document: AQA (8525, QN 601/8301/9), Cambridge OCR (J277, QN 601/8355/X — OCR adopted the Cambridge OCR name across its qualifications from September 2025), Pearson Edexcel (1CP2, QN 601/8058/4) and WJEC Eduqas (Qual Code C500QS, QN 601/8291/X). The Eduqas qualification is explicitly an England-only offer: its own specification states it is “not available for candidates in maintained schools and colleges in Wales”, the same pattern as WJEC Eduqas's GCSE History. Which board a school uses can matter for the actual programming a pupil learns. AQA publishes two live editions of 8525 side by side: a “Current” edition (Version 1.2, GCSE exams June 2022 to 2026) that governs every pupil in the DfE entry figures on this page, and an “Updated” edition (Version 1.3, first teaching September 2025, first exams summer 2027) for pupils starting the course now. Checked against both documents directly, the assessment structure, the three supported languages and the practical-programming rules below are identical in each: Paper 1 supports C#, Python 3 or VB.NET, chosen by the school, across both editions. Pearson Edexcel's Paper 2, by contrast, is a 2-hour onscreen practical exam in which every student answers using Python 3 specifically, with their own choice of Integrated Development Environment but no choice of language.

Carr Manor Community School in Moortown is the only one of the four where the vocational Technical Award route outnumbers the academic GCSE — 41 entries against 28, meaning a Carr Manor pupil doing computing was more likely to be on the vocational route in 2024/25. The Morley Academy shows the reverse and the largest raw GCSE count found across every Leeds school checked for this page: 50 GCSE Computer Science entries against 24 Technical Award entries, out of a 273-pupil cohort. Horsforth School and John Smeaton Academy list no vocational computing entries at all in DfE's subjects-entered table — every pupil doing computing at either school in 2024/25 was on the GCSE — but the two schools otherwise sit at opposite ends of the science-pillar picture below.
These four schools are not a full survey of Leeds — DfE does not publish a Leeds-wide total for either qualification, only school-by-school subject lists — and among a wider set of 17 Leeds-area schools checked for this page, GCSE Computer Science entries ranged from 12 to 50 pupils, with none showing zero. The vocational Technical Award route was absent at some schools and larger than the GCSE at others, so neither route can be assumed present, absent, or dominant without checking the individual school.

DfE publishes these as two genuinely different measures, not two ways of stating the same figure. The wide measure — 92.8% in Leeds against 94.1% in England — counts every valid route into the pillar, combined science included, and Leeds trails England on it by 1.3 percentage points. The narrow measure — 17.7% against 23.3%, a 5.6-point gap — counts only pupils entered for all three separate sciences, biology, chemistry and physics, and says nothing about who reached the pillar through computer science instead. Carr Manor Community School sits at 0.0% on the narrow measure — not one of its pupils was entered for the separate biology-chemistry-physics triple — yet its wide EBacc science entry rate is 96.3%, above both the Leeds and England averages, because its cohort reaches the pillar through combined science and, where a school enters pupils that way, computer science as the third single science. John Smeaton Academy shows the least comfortable combination of the four: a 0.0% narrow triple-science rate and an 87.5% wide science entry rate, below both the Leeds and England averages, meaning roughly one in eight of its key stage 4 pupils was not entered for any qualifying science combination at all in 2024/25.

Ofqual removed non-exam assessment from the qualification after finding coursework tasks and mark schemes circulating online, first suspending its effect on grades in 2018 and then confirming an exam-only model for first assessment in 2022, across every board. GCSE Computer Science today is assessed entirely through written and, on one board's second paper, onscreen exams — there is no coursework component contributing marks to the final grade on any of the four specifications checked for this page.
That does not mean the practical side of the course has disappeared from a school's obligations. On AQA's current specification, the head of school or college must submit a “Practical programming statement” confirming that every pupil has had the opportunity to design, write, test and refine a program during the course, in one or more languages supported by the specification. It is a compliance document, not a graded piece of work: failing to submit one is treated as malpractice or maladministration, but completing one earns no marks and affects no grade boundary. That is a genuine contrast with the next qualification up: at Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College, the AQA A-level Computer Science course includes a programming project that counts for 20% of the final A-level grade — the practical work that carries no weight at GCSE becomes a fifth of the mark at A-level.

In its November 2025 response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review, the Department for Education committed to replace the GCSE Computer Science qualification with, in the department's own words, “a broader offer that reflects the entirety of the computing curriculum whilst continuing to uphold the core principles of computer science such as programming and algorithms”, and to explore developing a new level 3 qualification in data science and AI for 16 to 18-year-olds. The same response sets out the wider timetable this change sits inside: a revised national curriculum published in 2027 for first teaching from September 2028, with updated GCSEs in national curriculum subjects following in two groups, one ready for first teaching in 2029 and the rest for first teaching in 2030. The department's own response does not yet say which of those two years computing falls into, and no subject content or first-teaching date specific to a replacement computing GCSE has been published. A pupil beginning GCSE Computer Science now, on any of the four current specifications, is studying the qualification as it stands, not whatever replaces it.
Entries in the subject were already moving before any of this was announced. Ofqual's own results-day commentary on the 2026 GCSE results names computing among the subjects with the largest year-on-year entry changes, down 7.2% on summer 2025 — a smaller fall than engineering's 9.3% but a larger one than French's 5.5%. Ofqual's published commentary does not attribute a cause to the fall, and this page does not guess at one.

Leeds Sixth Form College, part of the Luminate Education Group and used elsewhere on this site as the reference point for other A-level subjects, publishes its own entry-requirements page as an alphabetical list running from Art, Craft & Design through Biology, Business, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, Film Studies, Further Mathematics, Geography, History, Law, Maths, Media Studies, Philosophy, Photography, Physics, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology and Spanish. Computer Science, or Computing under any name, does not appear in that list at all — Chemistry is followed directly by English Language, exactly where it would sit alphabetically. A pupil wanting to continue Computer Science to A-level from a Leeds Sixth Form College feeder school needs a different sixth form.
Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College does teach it. Notre Dame publishes its entry requirement for AQA A-level Computer Science as a grade 6 in GCSE Maths, plus a grade 6 in GCSE Computing “if studied” — meaning the college does not require every applicant to have already sat GCSE Computer Science, provided their Maths grade clears the bar. That matters directly for pupils at a school like Carr Manor or John Smeaton, where a meaningful share of the cohort is on a vocational computing route, a combined-science route, or no computing qualification at all: none of those routes automatically closes the door to A-level Computer Science at Notre Dame, so long as the Maths grade is there.
The A-level itself asks for a different kind of work than the GCSE beneath it. Notre Dame's own course page describes a programming project that counts for 20% of the final A-level grade, alongside content covering data representation, networking, databases, logic and algorithms, assessed the rest of the way through written exams. That 20% weighting is a genuine step up from GCSE Computer Science, where the equivalent practical programming work is confirmed only by the school's own “Practical programming statement” and contributes no marks at all.
