A-Level Biology Tutors in Leicester

A-level Biology in Leicester is taught across eight state-funded and independent institutions that recorded at least one exam entry in 2024/25, part of 545 A-level Biology entries logged for the city by the Department for Education. Two colleges, Beauchamp City Sixth Form and WQE and Regent College Group, hold 444 of those entries between them — 81 per cent of the city's total.

Where Leicester Actually Teaches A-Level Biology

Nine state-funded and independent Leicester institutions entered students for A-levels of any kind in 2025, and eight of them recorded at least one A-level Biology exam entry in 2024/25. The ninth, Darul Uloom Leicester, entered three students for A-levels that year and its entire subjects-entered table is a single row: Mathematics. All three of its A-level students sat maths and nothing else, so no Leicester Biology count includes it.

Among the eight that do teach Biology, two colleges that take students only from age 16 dominate. Beauchamp City Sixth Form, a 16-to-19 free school with 474 students who sat an A-level in 2025, recorded 247 Biology exam entries in 2024/25 — more than half its entire A-level cohort took the subject. WQE and Regent College Group, a general sixth form college with 1,275 A-level students, recorded 197. Together the two colleges hold 444 of the city's 545 Biology entries, 81 per cent, even though WQE and Regent alone teaches nearly three times as many A-level students overall as Beauchamp.

The two are different units and the two independent schools sit outside the state-funded local-authority total of 2,183 students that the first seven rows sum to.

The 545 entries in the right-hand column are exam entries, not students: a student who takes three A-levels appears once for each. English Martyrs' Catholic School is the one institution in the table running a live AS route alongside the A-level — DfE recorded 40 AS-level Biology entries there against 24 at full A-level, so more of its Year 12 biologists are sitting an external AS paper than are yet committed to the two-year course.

Biology Is Leicester's Most-Entered A-Level Science — But Not at Every Institution

Add up the three separate sciences across the eight institutions that teach any of them, and Biology comes out ahead: 545 A-level entries in 2024/25, against 491 in Chemistry and 262 in Physics. That is a genuine citywide pattern, not a rounding artefact — Biology out-entries Chemistry by 54 and Physics by more than double. But the aggregate hides two institutions where the opposite is true.

Chemistry beats Biology at exactly two of the eight: Beauchamp City Sixth Form, 261 to 247, and Leicester High School for Girls, 11 to 9. Everywhere else — WQE and Regent, St Paul's, Gateway and The City of Leicester College — Biology leads, and at English Martyrs' the two are level at A-level, 24 apiece, though Biology's AS-level entries outnumber Chemistry's there too, 40 to 33. The citywide total favours Biology because its lead at WQE and Regent (64 entries) is larger than either of Chemistry's two wins.

What GCSE Grade Do Leicester Sixth Forms Require for A-Level Biology?

Six of the eight Biology-teaching institutions publish a specific entry threshold, and they range from a grade 6 to a grade 7, with several also naming a separate GCSE Maths requirement that has nothing to do with the science grade itself.

The two thresholds furthest apart both sit at institutions with very different Biology cohorts. Leicester High School for Girls, 9 entries, sets the only requirement in the city that names a specific GCSE Maths grade of 7 — higher than its own science threshold's effective floor. Beauchamp City Sixth Form, 247 entries, also ties Biology to a Maths grade rather than treating it as a pure-science decision: the school's full 18-subject entry table lists a Mathematics requirement against ten courses, Biology among them, alongside Chemistry, Computer Science and Physics.

Which Exam Board Sets Leicester's A-Level Biology, and What Are Its Current Codes?

Four Leicester institutions confirm their board directly, on their own websites, and all four name the same one. WQE and Regent College Group describes its course as following "this AQA specification". The City of Leicester College states plainly: "We follow the AQA Biology (7402) syllabus." St Paul's Catholic School links students to the "AQA A-Level Biology Spec". Leicester High School for Girls publishes the code on its own subject page: "Biology AQA 7402".

AQA's own specification page confirms 7402 is current, with the specification document itself reissued on 10 July 2026 and first teaching dating to 2015 — not a legacy version awaiting replacement. Three other boards also offer A-level Biology in England, confirmed live on 2 September 2026, all first taught from September 2015: OCR's Biology A carries specification code H420 (AS level H020), Ofqual qualification number 601/4260/1. Pearson Edexcel's Biology A, subtitled Salters-Nuffield, carries qualification code 9BN0, confirmed inside the board's own specification PDF rather than its marketing page, which does not print the code at all. Eduqas's AS/A Level Biology carries reference code A400QS at A-level and B400QS at AS level, Ofqual qualification numbers 601/5706/9 and 601/5705/7.

We could not confirm which board English Martyrs' Catholic School or Leicester College use for Biology: neither publishes it on a page we could read, and a school's choice of board is not something DfE's performance tables record.

What Is the Practical Endorsement, and How Does It Affect the Grade?

A-level Biology carries a second, separate assessment alongside the written papers, and it is worth being precise about what it is and is not. Under AQA's specification, the board named by every Leicester institution we could verify, the rule is explicit: "A-level grades will be based only on marks from written exams. A separate endorsement of practical skills will be taken alongside the A-level. This will be assessed by teachers and will be based on direct observation of students' competency in a range of skills that are not assessable in written exams."

The endorsement covers 12 required practical activities across the full two-year course, assessed by the student's own teachers rather than examined, and reported as a Pass: "In order to be awarded a Pass a student must, by the end of the practical science assessment, consistently and routinely meet the criteria" set out for each competency. It does not apply at AS level at all — AQA states the AS qualification is assessed by written exam only. Separately, 15 per cent of the marks in the A-level's written papers relate to practical work, which is a different thing again: exam questions drawing on practical knowledge, marked like any other exam question, and folded into the ordinary A*-E grade.

Gateway Sixth Form College's own admissions page corroborates the structure independently of AQA's specification document: "There are twelve compulsory practicals which are assessed but not examined." A student's UCAS form and final certificate will show the A*-E grade and, separately, whether the practical endorsement was awarded — a university offer that requires a practical Pass is asking about the second figure, not the first.

What the DfE's 16-to-18 Figures Do Not Say About Biology Teaching in Leicester

Every outcome measure the Department for Education publishes for 16-to-18 study is an all-subject figure, and Biology's outsized share of the city's science entries makes this easy to forget. Leicester's state-funded schools and colleges recorded an average result of grade C+, 32.27 points, across all A-levels in 2025, against grade B-, 35 points, for state-funded England and grade B-, 36.1, across all English schools and colleges. Retention — the share of students completing their main study programme — was 91.5% in Leicester against 93.1% for state-funded England. On the measure of students achieving AAB or higher including at least two facilitating subjects, Leicester recorded 12.9%, against 17.5% for state-funded England and 20.0% across all English schools and colleges.

Institution-level progress scores follow the same all-subject rule, and DfE's own banding method rewards precision as much as the score itself: a school is banded "above average" only when its score is above zero and its entire confidence interval sits above zero too. Beauchamp City Sixth Form scored 0.1 with an interval of 0.05 to 0.16, above average. The City of Leicester College scored higher, 0.18, interval 0.06 to 0.29, also above average. English Martyrs' Catholic School scored 0.15, interval 0.05 to 0.26, above average. St Paul's Catholic School scored 0.13, interval -0.01 to 0.26 — a wider interval that crosses zero, so despite a similar score to Beauchamp's it is banded merely "average". WQE and Regent College Group (-0.34, interval -0.37 to -0.3) and Gateway Sixth Form College (-0.26, interval -0.39 to -0.13) are both banded below average, and Leicester High School for Girls, at -0.47 with an interval of -0.76 to -0.17, is the lowest in the city. England's own score across all schools and colleges is -0.03.

None of the above is Biology-specific: it describes every A-level a student at each institution sat, not the 247, 197, 28 or 9 of them who chose Biology. The Department's only subject-level view, the subjects-entered table, carries four columns — subject, exam entry count, qualification and level — and no grade or points column at all. Leicester College's and Darul Uloom Leicester's outcome measures are suppressed (shown as SUPP) under DfE's rule for five or fewer pupils, even though their entry counts of 3 print in full; that is a published absence, not a missing figure.
