A-Level Physics Tutors in Leicester 2026

Seven Leicester institutions entered candidates for A-level Physics in 2024/25, and the Department for Education records 262 exam entries between them. Beauchamp City Sixth Form holds the largest share at 118 and WQE and Regent College Group the second at 107. Three institutions name OCR Physics A, specification H556; two name AQA Physics A, specification 7408; two do not publish a board anywhere on their own site.

Which Leicester Institutions Teach A-Level Physics, and On Which Board?

The Department for Education publishes a subjects-entered table for every school and sixth-form college with post-GCSE provision. Reading each of the seven Leicester institutions that recorded an A-level Physics entry in 2024/25 gives the following picture, alongside the board each one names on its own course pages.

Leicester College (a general further education college, distinct from The City of Leicester College) recorded one A-level Biology entry and no Physics row; Darul Uloom Leicester’s only subject rows are Mathematics and Computer Studies; New College Leicester’s only Level 3 offer found was a vocational Hairdressing diploma, not A-levels.

Three institutions confirm their board directly. Beauchamp City Sixth Form’s own course page names “OCR Physics A Syllabus”. English Martyrs’ Catholic School states “Exam Board: OCR” and publishes a six-module content list — Development of Practical Skills, Foundations, Forces and Motion, Electrons Waves and Photons, Newtonian World and Astrophysics, Particles and Medical Physics — that matches OCR’s own specification-at-a-glance page for Physics A (H556) module for module. Leicester High School for Girls states “Physics OCR H556” outright. Two more confirm AQA directly: St Paul’s Catholic School’s course page reads “Assessment Board: AQA. We follow the AQA A Physics (7408) course”, and The City of Leicester College’s reads “We follow the AQA Physics syllabus A (7408)”.

WQE and Regent College Group and Gateway Sixth Form College do not. WQE’s own course page and its October 2025 subject-choice booklet, both read on 24 September 2026, set out entry grades and course content for Physics without naming an exam board anywhere. Gateway’s course listing does the same. Between them the two hold 113 of the city’s 262 Physics entries — 43 per cent, our own calculation from those two figures — so a substantial share of Leicester’s Physics students are at institutions where the board has to be confirmed by asking rather than by reading the website.

What GCSE Grades Do Leicester Sixth Forms Ask For, and Do They Expect A-Level Maths Too?

Every Leicester institution checked publishes a specific GCSE requirement for A-level Physics, and it is not simply “a pass in science”: all seven name a Physics or equivalent Combined Science grade and a separate Maths grade.

Six of the seven converge on the same number: a GCSE grade 6 in Physics, or the Combined Science equivalent, and a grade 6 in Maths. Only Leicester High School for Girls, the one independent school among the seven, sets a higher bar — a 7 in both GCSE Maths and GCSE Physics or Double Science — and it is the strictest published requirement of any Leicester A-level Physics provider.

Two of the seven go further and state a position on pairing Physics with A-level Maths, rather than leaving it to the student to work out. WQE and Regent College Group’s own listing says: “We advise that students wishing to study A-level Physics do it alongside A-level Mathematics”, and describes a combined Physics, Maths and Electronics route into engineering degrees that it states is “the only sixth form college in the area offering this bespoke pathway”. The City of Leicester College’s course page says: “There are also obvious links with Mathematics, and it is strongly advised students take this course in addition to their Physics studies.” The other five providers checked — Beauchamp City, English Martyrs’, Gateway, St Paul’s and Leicester High School for Girls — publish a GCSE entry bar for Physics but no stated position on the Maths pairing either way.

Gateway Sixth Form College’s Physics course also runs alongside collaborative activities with the National Space Centre and the city’s two universities, De Montfort University and the University of Leicester, according to its own course listing — the kind of local detail a national comparison table cannot carry. Does DfE’s Value-Added Data Show Which Leicester Institution’s Physics Results Are Strongest?

The same measure, applied to Physics rather than Chemistry, tells a similar but not identical story.

Beauchamp City Sixth Form’s A-level Physics value added is +0.25, with a confidence interval of +0.04 to +0.47 on 116 entries — entirely above zero, so it is banded above average. WQE and Regent College Group’s A-level Physics value added is −0.65, with a confidence interval of −0.87 to −0.42 on 105 entries — entirely below zero, so it is banded below average. Those are the only two of Leicester’s seven Physics providers whose interval clears zero in either direction. The City of Leicester College (+0.37, on 11 entries), St Paul’s Catholic School (+0.67, on 6 entries) and English Martyrs’ Catholic School (+0.03, on 7 entries) all have a confidence interval that straddles zero, so each is banded average whatever its headline score suggests. Gateway Sixth Form College’s and Leicester High School for Girls’ Physics value-added scores are both suppressed by the Department for low numbers.

Worth flagging directly: WQE and Regent College Group’s −0.65 A-level Physics score, on 105 entries, is not the same result as the −0.65 A-level English Literature value added the Department also records for WQE, on a separate cohort of 116 entries and published on Leading Tuition’s Leicester A-level English page. The two figures share only their rounded digits — different subject, different year group, different cohort size.

Small cohorts widen the confidence interval sharply, which is exactly why Gateway’s and Leicester High School’s scores are suppressed rather than published with a wide, unreliable range. A headline value-added score without its interval is not a finding on its own; a difference between two estimates whose intervals both cross zero is noise, not a result.
