Loreto College took 426 of those entries and Xaverian College 228, and the city's total came to 1,086 — more than the 1,061 it entered for A-level Biology. That is a Manchester figure and nothing more: the balance between the two sciences is local, and it does not run the same way in every city.

Why does Manchester enter more students for chemistry than for biology?

The Department for Education publishes exam entries subject by subject for schools and colleges with 16-18 provision. Summing all sixteen Manchester rows gives 1,086 A-level Chemistry entries in 2024/25 against 1,061 for A-level Biology — a difference of 25 entries, and the first thing worth saying about it is that it is genuinely narrow. The second is that it survives despite both of the city's biggest providers leaning the other way: Loreto College entered 451 for biology against 426 for chemistry, and Xaverian College 245 against 228.

What closes the gap is the rest of the city. Ten of the sixteen institutions enter more candidates for chemistry than for biology, five enter more for biology, and LTE Group is level at 1 each. The sharpest single case is The Manchester Grammar School, which entered 100 for A-level Chemistry and 56 for A-level Biology — chemistry is comfortably its larger science. St Bede's College shows the same shape at smaller scale, with 22 against 11.

Concentration differs too. Loreto and Xaverian together hold 654 of the 1,086 chemistry entries, which is 60.2% of the local authority total. The equivalent figure for biology is 65.6%. So chemistry in Manchester is not only slightly larger than biology, it is spread across more providers: eleven of the sixteen institutions entered twenty or more candidates for chemistry. For a family, that means the chances of the local school sixth form running a chemistry group of a workable size are better than the headline dominance of the two colleges suggests.

Which exam board and specification does Loreto teach chemistry with?

Loreto College names its board on its own A Level Chemistry course page: OCR. What it does not say is which of OCR's two chemistry A-levels it teaches, and those two are very different courses. Its published component list settles the question. Loreto lists Paper 1, Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry, at 37% of total marks over a written exam of 2 hours 15 minutes; Paper 2, Synthesis and Analytical Techniques, at 37% over 2 hours 15 minutes; and Paper 3, Unified Chemistry, at 26% over 1 hour 30 minutes.

Set that against OCR's own published assessment structure. OCR Chemistry A (H432) is assessed by exactly those three components, under exactly those titles, weighted 37%, 37% and 26% at 2 hours 15 minutes, 2 hours 15 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes. OCR Chemistry B (Salters, H433) is weighted 41%, 37% and 22%, and its teaching modules are context-led with names such as Elements of life, Developing fuels and Elements from the sea. Loreto's own description of what Paper 1 covers — practical skills, foundations in chemistry, periodic table, energy, physical chemistry and transition elements — maps onto the modules OCR assesses in H432's component 01. On that evidence Loreto teaches H432. That identification is ours, drawn from the two published structures rather than stated by the college, and a family can confirm it in one question to the department.

The detail that matters most for tuition is what sits beside it. Loreto teaches A-level Biology with EDUQAS, not OCR. One college, two sciences, two different awarding organisations, two different paper structures and two different sets of past papers. A student taking both at Loreto is preparing for exams set by two separate boards, and any tuition that treats 'science' as one thing will be working from the wrong specimen papers half the time.

Xaverian College, the second-largest chemistry entry at 228, does not name a board anywhere on its own chemistry course page. It publishes three topic areas — Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry — and describes assessment simply as three final exams and a practical endorsement. Those headings are too generic to identify a specification, and they match neither of OCR's two chemistry courses, so we are not going to guess at Xaverian's board. Ask the department directly; it is a one-line answer that changes which past papers a student should be working through.

How much maths is really in A-level chemistry?

This is the structural fact behind most of the entry requirements below, and it is a national rule rather than a local choice. The Department for Education's subject content for A-level sciences states that 'the assessment of quantitative skills will include at least 10% level 2 or above mathematical skills for biology and psychology, 20% for chemistry and 40% for physics, these skills will be applied in the context of the relevant science A level'. Chemistry therefore carries double biology's minimum mathematical load, by regulation, on every specification and at every provider in Manchester.

Read Loreto College's entry requirement next to that number and the mechanism becomes obvious. Loreto asks for GCSE Maths at higher tier, grades 9-6, before A-level Chemistry — and Xaverian College counts Mathematics as one of the three GCSE grades it requires. Neither college is being arbitrary. A fifth of the marks in the written papers are for mathematics at GCSE higher tier standard or above, applied inside chemistry problems: mole and concentration calculations, equilibrium constants, rate equations, enthalpy changes, pH. A student who scraped a 6 in GCSE Maths is not being asked to do harder maths at A-level chemistry so much as to do familiar maths quickly, accurately and inside unfamiliar chemical contexts, under time pressure, for a fifth of the paper.

That is also where a lot of chemistry grades are actually lost. It is common for a student to understand the chemistry of a question and still drop the marks on unit conversion, significant figures or rearranging an expression. The DfE's own appendix for chemistry lists the skills explicitly, from recognising and using appropriate units in calculations through to giving units for an equilibrium constant or a rate constant. Diagnosing whether a student's problem is the chemistry or the arithmetic inside it is usually the first useful thing one-to-one teaching can do.

What Loreto and Xaverian ask for before A-level chemistry

Loreto College's published course-specific requirement is GCSE Maths (higher tier) at grades 9-6 together with either GCSE Chemistry at grades 9-6 or GCSE Combined Science at grades 9-9 through to 6-6. Choosing more than one subject from biology, chemistry, physics or maths raises it: the college then asks for a minimum of grades 6, 6 and 7 across the chosen subjects or maths. Loreto also publishes an expectation for workload, recommending that students do at least five or six hours a week of independent study for chemistry alone.

Xaverian College's published requirement is grades 6, 6 and 6 across two sciences and Mathematics, rising to 6, 6 and 7 for a student applying for two A-level sciences together. It carries one clause its biology page does not: one of those grade 6s must be in Chemistry if the student took separate sciences. That is a genuinely chemistry-specific condition, and it is the kind of detail that only shows up when the two course pages are read side by side.

So both colleges converge on a headline 6, and both raise the bar for students taking more than one science — but they attach the 6 to different combinations, and Xaverian names the subject where Loreto offers a Combined Science route. Not every Manchester provider publishes a subject-specific requirement at all, so the course page itself is a better guide than the sixth form's general entry criteria.

Why do Xaverian's chemistry results sit ten points below its biology?

Xaverian College publishes course-level outcomes on each subject page, which makes a direct within-college comparison possible. Its chemistry page reports a 97% overall pass rate and 54% of students achieving high grades of A*-B. Its biology page reports 99% and 64% on the same two measures. Almost everyone passes either subject; the distance between them is at the top end, where chemistry sits ten percentage points below biology inside the same institution, teaching broadly the same intake admitted on broadly the same GCSE profile.

That gap is the practical case for tuition on this subject rather than a general claim about difficulty. A grade 6 at GCSE clears the entry bar at Manchester's two largest chemistry departments, and roughly half of a large college cohort then arrives at A*-B. The work in between is mostly the things GCSE Chemistry does not test in the same way: multi-step calculations carried under time pressure, organic mechanisms drawn precisely enough to earn the mark, and extended-response questions that ask a student to justify rather than recall.

What does The Manchester Grammar School publish about its 2026 chemistry results?

MGS publishes subject-level A-level results on its own site rather than only a whole-school figure. Its 2026 A-level Chemistry row shows 89.1% of grades at A*-B, with 27 A*s, 42 As, 21 Bs and 7 Cs recorded. Its 2026 Biology row shows 88.1%, with 16 A*s, 27 As, 16 Bs and 6 Cs — so at MGS the two sciences land within a point of each other at the top end, the opposite of the ten-point spread Xaverian publishes. The school's 2025 chemistry figure, on the same page, was 84.0%.

These are MGS's own course-level figures for chemistry specifically, not a whole-school statistic, and they answer a different question from the entry data above. MGS entered 100 candidates for A-level Chemistry in the 2024/25 DfE dataset, which places it third in Manchester by volume and far behind the two colleges; its published grade profile is a separate matter from its scale. Both are worth knowing, and they are rarely found in the same place.

Is anyone in Manchester still entering students for AS-level chemistry?

Standalone AS-levels have all but disappeared from chemistry in Manchester. In 2024/25, only three institutions in the local authority entered anyone at all for AS-level Chemistry: Trinity CofE High School with 37, Loreto College with 1 and Xaverian College with 1. That is a city total of 39, of which Trinity accounts for 37. Trinity did the same in biology, entering 33 at AS alongside 32 at A level. Those are entries recorded for 2024/25 and are not a statement about what Trinity offers this year, which is worth confirming with the school directly.

Separately, one AS chemistry route is being closed nationally. OCR has confirmed that it will withdraw its AS Level Chemistry B (Salters) qualification, H033, after the next academic year: the final first-teaching date is September 2026 and the final assessment opportunity is June 2027. The A level version, H433, carries no withdrawal date on the same page and continues. That distinction matters and is easy to get wrong — in biology OCR is withdrawing both halves of Advancing Biology, AS and A level; in chemistry it is only the Salters AS that is going.
