Handsworth Grange Community Sports College pushes Computer Science hardest of the 30: 62 entries from a 204-pupil cohort, a 30.4% entry share — the highest of any Sheffield secondary checked for this page, ahead of Mercia School's 46 entries (26.7% of its 172-pupil cohort) and UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park's 20 entries (20.2% of a much smaller 99-pupil cohort). At the other end among schools that enter at least one pupil, Sheffield Park Academy enters the lowest share: 9 entries from 199 pupils, 4.5%, narrowly below Fir Vale School's 4.8% (9 of 189).
Five of the 30 enter nobody at all for the GCSE: Sheffield Springs Academy, E-ACT Parkwood Academy, UTC Sheffield City Centre, The Birley Academy, and Lift Firth Park. Why Do Sheffield's Two University Technical Colleges Take Such Different Routes Into Computing?
University technical colleges combine mainstream academic subjects with technical, employer-linked learning; both of Sheffield's take pupils from age 13, according to their GIAS age-range field, rather than 11 like the other 28 schools checked for this page, and both are confirmed open at GIAS. Yet the two take opposite routes into computing. UTC Sheffield City Centre enters zero pupils for the GCSE and instead reports 129 entries split across two vocational Technical Award rows — 96 in 'Computer Appreciation / Introduction' and 33 in 'Multimedia' — from a 99-pupil 2024/25 cohort. Because 129 exceeds its own cohort of 99, a meaningful share of its pupils must be entered for both vocational qualifications at once; DfE's published entries table does not break down which specific awarding body or specification either Technical Award row represents.
UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park does the opposite: 20 GCSE Computer Science entries plus a further 21 in the same 'Computer Appreciation / Introduction' Technical Award, from its own 99-pupil cohort — a 20.2% GCSE entry share, the third-highest of any Sheffield secondary checked for this page, ahead of every school bar Handsworth Grange and Mercia. A parent should check a UTC's own published entry count directly rather than assume, from its STEM branding, that either GCSE or vocational computing is taught the same way at both.

Why Don't Chaucer School and Fir Vale School Appear on GIAS Under Those Names Today?
Two of the schools whose 2024/25 GCSE Computer Science entries appear in DfE's data, and on this page, have since closed. Fir Vale School, in the Burngreave area, closed on 30 June 2025 under a Department for Education 'Fresh Start', confirmed directly at GIAS, and reopened the next day as Fir Vale Academy under United Learning Trust. Its 2024/25 entries — 9 GCSE Computer Science, 11 in the vocational Technical Award — describe the closed predecessor, not the academy operating on the site today, which has no GCSE results history of its own yet.
Chaucer School, in the Southey area, closed on 31 August 2026 — the day before this page was researched — also under a Fresh Start, confirmed directly at GIAS. Its successor, Mercia Northridge School, opened on 1 September 2026 under the Mercia Learning Trust, the same trust behind Mercia School, the Sheffield secondary this page found with the second-highest GCSE Computer Science entry share (26.7%). Chaucer's own 2024/25 entries — 25 GCSE Computer Science, and 107 in the vocational Technical Award, the largest vocational computing entry of any Sheffield school checked — describe the school that closed on 31 August, not Mercia Northridge School, which has no entry history of its own.
How Does a Computer Science GCSE Satisfy the EBacc Science Pillar Without Triple Science?
For the English Baccalaureate's science requirement, gov.uk states plainly that pupils must take one of two routes: 'GCSE combined science – pupils take 2 GCSEs that cover the 3 main sciences, biology, chemistry and physics' or '3 single sciences at GCSE – pupils choose 3 subjects from biology, chemistry, physics and computer science.' A pupil taking Biology, Chemistry and Computer Science therefore satisfies the EBacc science pillar without ever sitting Physics — Computer Science is not an add-on to the three traditional sciences, it is one of four subjects a pupil can choose three from.
DfE's Compare School service publishes this pillar as an entering percentage on its EBacc additional measures data, separately from the individual GCSE Computer Science entries examined above. Sheffield's state-funded secondary schools entered 93.0% of pupils for the EBacc science pillar in the 2024/25 results, against an England state-funded average of 94.1% — a 1.1 percentage-point gap, according to the Department for Education. That percentage already reflects whichever route each pupil's school offers, combined science or the three-single-sciences route Computer Science can complete, and DfE does not publish it split by route at school or local-authority level — so it cannot be used to say how many of the 632 Computer Science entries checked above are themselves converting into a completed science pillar.

DfE's own subject taxonomy keeps GCSE Computer Science entirely separate from vocational computing qualifications, and the two must not be read as interchangeable. The GCSE appears under the subject row 'Computer Studies/Computing', qualification type 'GCSE'. A different, non-GCSE row, 'Computer Appreciation / Introduction', qualification type 'Technical Award', appears at 19 of Sheffield's 30 schools; UTC Sheffield City Centre alone also reports a third row, 'Multimedia', also a Technical Award. DfE's published table names only the subject and qualification type for these Technical Award rows — it does not name the awarding body or the specific vocational qualification behind either label. A school with zero GCSE Computer Science entries is not necessarily a school that ignores computing altogether — as the five zero-GCSE schools above show, four of them still enter substantial numbers into the vocational alternative. Written Paper or Onscreen Exam — How Do Sheffield's Computer Science Boards Actually Differ?
AQA's GCSE Computer Science has carried a single specification code, 8525, across two content versions: the one this page's 2024/25 DfE entries were examined under (teaching from September 2020, exams from summer 2022, last exams summer 2026, PDF Version 1.2) and the one now being taught to every Sheffield pupil starting the course (teaching from September 2025, first exams summer 2027, PDF Version 1.3). This page read both PDFs directly on 2 September 2026 and found identical assessment structures in each: Paper 1, Computational thinking and programming skills (written exam, 2 hours, 90 marks, 50%), and Paper 2, Computing concepts (written exam, 1 hour 45 minutes, 90 marks, 50%). AQA's own introduction to the newer version describes 'fresh features' as changes to course content, not to this paper structure, and the 'Practical programming statement' arrangement below is also worded identically in both PDFs.
OCR's GCSE Computer Science (9-1) carries specification code J277, confirmed directly on OCR's own qualification page and in its specification PDF (Version 3.1, May 2026), which states the qualification is 'for first assessment 2022' — the same code and, since no successor version has been announced, the same structure for both this page's 2024/25 DfE entries and every Sheffield pupil sitting the course now. It splits its 160 marks evenly: Component 01, Computer Systems (80 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes, 50%), and Component 02, Computational Thinking, Algorithms and Programming (80 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes, 50%). OCR's own specification-at-a-glance page states that practical programming skills 'will be assessed during the written examinations, in particular component 02 (section B)' — a written paper, not an onscreen coding exam.
Pearson Edexcel's GCSE (9-1) Computer Science, specification code 1CP2, has been in force since first teaching September 2020 and first certification 2022, confirmed directly in Edexcel's own specification PDF, with no successor version found — again, the same code spans both this page's 2024/25 DfE entries and every current Sheffield pupil. Paper 1: Principles of Computer Science (code 1CP2/01) is a written exam, 1 hour 30 minutes, 75 marks, 50% of the qualification. Its specification PDF states it is for 'teaching from 2020' and 'for award from 2022' — again spanning both this page's 2024/25 entries and every current Sheffield pupil, with no successor version found. Like Edexcel, Eduqas examines programming onscreen: Component 1, Understanding Computer Science, is a written exam (1 hour 45 minutes, 50%), while Component 2, Computer Programming, is an onscreen examination (2 hours, 50%) in which, its specification states, 'learners are required to produce a programmed solution to a set task which will then be the basis for examination.'
