Which exam board and which GCSE grades each Slough sixth form publishes for A-level Biology, and what DfE's 2024/25 value-added data can and cannot show.
A-level Biology in Slough is a two-year course that twelve schools entered candidates for in 2024/25. Ten publish their exam board: five AQA, three OCR and two Edexcel. Published GCSE entry bars run from 6-6 in Combined Science to 8,8 at Upton Court Grammar School. Department for Education value-added data separates only two of Slough's eleven published Biology rows from zero, on cohorts of 12 to 80 entries.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Slough on AQA, OCR and both Edexcel specifications, building each programme around a student's own sixth form and the papers ahead of them.
Which exam board does your child's Slough sixth form use for A-level Biology?
The board decides which papers a student sits, so it is the first thing a tutor needs to know. Slough has no single answer: the twelve schools in the Department for Education's 2024/25 Biology data use AQA, OCR and two separate Edexcel qualifications, and the DfE data does not record which. The table reads each school's board from its own sixth-form documents, named in the last column.
Twelve schools, sorted by A-level Biology exam entries in 2024/25, largest first. The order is about size and says nothing about results.
Five schools publish AQA: Upton Court Grammar School, Ditton Park Academy, The Langley Academy, Baylis Court School and St Joseph's Catholic High School, whose subject guide gives AQA specification 7402. Three publish OCR. Langley Grammar School and St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School both name OCR Biology A, code H420. Herschel Grammar School names OCR without saying which OCR Biology qualification, so the table records OCR alone.
The two Edexcel schools do not share a qualification. Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College teaches Salters-Nuffield, which Pearson lists as Biology A. The Westgate School names Biology B. Pearson publishes them as separate A-levels, each with its own specification page, so a student who moves from one school to the other changes course, not only classroom.
Two schools give no board. Wexham School publishes a Biology entry bar but names no awarding body in the criteria document we read. Beechwood School's curriculum summary for 2025-26 names nine A-levels and Biology is not among them; Compare records 3 Biology exam entries there in 2024/25. Both are statements about what we could find, not about what either school teaches, so ask the school for its board and specification code before choosing past papers.
Know which board your child's school enters? Our expert A-level Biology tutors teach Slough students one to one, online or in person, from the papers of exactly that specification.
Which GCSE grades open A-level Biology at each Slough sixth form?
Each school states its Biology bar in its own terms: some in Combined Science pairs, some as a single Biology grade, some with Maths or English attached. The table gives each bar as the school words it, in the documents named above, for September 2026 entry.
School

A student on 6-6 in Combined Science meets the bar at six schools and misses it at five. A student on 7-7 meets nine, and only Upton Court Grammar School asks for more than 8-7. A 6 in separate Biology is accepted at seven schools where 6-6 in Combined Science is accepted at six; the extra one is St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School, which takes a 6 from Triple Award Science students and a 7 from Double Award.
Upton Court Grammar School adds a second gate. It counts Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics, Computing and Psychology as science subjects, and asks for an average GCSE score across a student's best eight subjects of 5.5 for one of them, 6.0 for two and 7.0 for three. Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics together are three, so that combination needs 7.0 on top of the subject bars.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors help Slough students reach the grade a sixth form asks for, and then work through the specification that school teaches, whether that is AQA, OCR or either Edexcel course.
All four of Slough's selective schools say outright that their sixth forms take students from other schools. Langley Grammar School applies the same criteria to its own Year 11 and to new joiners. Herschel Grammar School tells all applicants, internal or external, to apply in the same way. St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School publishes one set of requirements for internal and external applicants, and Upton Court Grammar School invites applicants from other schools in the area. The bars are set in GCSE grades; the separate Year 7 routes are covered on our Slough 11+ tuition page.
These are the documents published for September 2026 entry. Schools reissue them each year and grades can move, so confirm the bar with the school before relying on it.
How large must a Slough Biology department be before DfE's value added can be told apart from zero?
The Department for Education publishes a value-added score for each school's A-level Biology entries. It starts from every student's key stage 4 results and compares their A-level result with the national average for students who began in the same place. Each score comes with a 95% interval. DfE's guidance builds that interval as the score plus or minus 1.96 standard errors, centres it on the score, and says its width is largely set by the number of students who completed the qualification, with fewer students giving a wider interval. A score is a finding only when the whole interval sits on one side of zero.
The published Slough rows show the width rule at work. Take half the width of each interval and multiply it by the square root of the row's entries: across all eleven published rows in the table below the answer lands between 2.08 and 2.11, in the last column. In these rows the width is explained by cohort size alone. It is a property of how the interval is built, visible in every published row here, and not a local feature or a comment on any department.
Turned round, it gives a bar. To clear zero a department needs a score, in either direction, of about 2.1 divided by the square root of its entries. DfE's guidance illustrates its scores in grades, so that is about 0.61 of a grade at 12 entries, 0.42 at 25, 0.30 at 50 and 0.23 at 80. A department of 12 cannot produce a finding unless the gap is very large; a department of 80 can produce one from a small gap.
All eleven published rows, sorted by matched entries, largest first. The order is about cohort size and is not a ranking of results. DfE's data set labels the count ‘Number of entries’; against a school's own Compare exam-entry count it is equal or lower.

Beechwood School and Wexham School are suppressed in the data set.
Two of the eleven published rows have an interval entirely on one side of zero.
St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School recorded a value added of -0.31, with a 95% interval from -0.60 to -0.01, from 50 matched entries. That is the Department for Education's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College recorded a value added of 0.48, with a 95% interval from 0.06 to 0.91, from 24 matched entries. That is the Department for Education's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality.
Langley Grammar School recorded a value added of 0.24, with a 95% interval from 0.00 to 0.47, from 80 matched entries. That is the Department for Education's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality. The lower bound is published as exactly 0.00, and a finding needs the whole interval on one side of zero, so this row is not counted as clearing it.
The other eight published rows, the college's among them, have intervals that span zero, so none of the nine rows outside the two can be told apart from zero. Nothing in the data records a school's board, its group size or its type, and this page draws no line from any of them to a score. DfE's own guidance lists home life and private tuition among the other influences on a student's attainment.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Slough whatever their school's cohort looks like in the data, working from the student's own papers and the marks they are actually losing.

Confidence and progress
My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
What is the Windsor Forest Colleges Group row, and why is it kept out of the school counts?
DfE's sweep for Slough, local authority 871, returns thirteen rows for A-level Biology in 2024/25. Twelve are schools that the register of schools, GIAS, records under Slough, all shown as open when read on 29 September 2026. The thirteenth is Windsor Forest Colleges Group. This page shows its row and counts it separately.
GIAS, read on 29 September 2026, records the group (URN 130604) as a General Further Education College at Station Road, Langley, with Strode's College and Berkshire College of Agriculture listed as predecessors. The group's own website, read on 29 September 2026, lists four colleges: BCA, Slough & Langley, Strode's in Egham, Surrey, and Windsor College. Its course pages, read on 29 September 2026, name A-level Biology, OCR Biology A, at Windsor College in Windsor, Berkshire and at Strode's in Egham, Surrey, for a September 2027 start. The Slough & Langley College prospectus for 2026-27 lists no A-level courses.
None of that says where the students behind the 2024/25 row were taught. DfE files them under the group's URN, which GIAS places at the Langley address, and the course pages and prospectus above describe provision for 2026-27 and 2027. So the row appears in the tables marked as a college, and it is left out of every count of Slough schools on this page.
The counts then reconcile. Compare records 414 A-level Biology exam entries across the thirteen rows in 2024/25, 45 of them at the group, which leaves 369 across the twelve schools. The four grammar schools account for 252 of those 369. DfE's matched entries total 398 across the eleven published rows, 42 of them the group's, which leaves 356 across the ten schools with a published row. Matched entries can sit below the exam-entry count: Herschel Grammar School has 55 against 59, The Westgate School 20 against 22, St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School 50 against 51 and the group 42 against 45. Beechwood School and Wexham School are suppressed in DfE's data, and Compare shows 3 entries at each.
What if your child's school enters only a handful of A-level Biology candidates?
Group sizes differ widely. In 2024/25 Beechwood School and Wexham School each had 3 Biology exam entries, Baylis Court School and St Joseph's Catholic High School 12 each and The Langley Academy 16. The smallest published value-added row is 12.
A small group can fail to run. Herschel Grammar School's option blocks say a final decision on whether a subject runs depends on there being viable numbers. St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School says that if fewer than 10 students opt for a course it may not be able to run it, though it may still offer it with reduced teacher-led hours. Upton Court Grammar School says A-level availability depends on popularity. These are general statements by the schools, and none says Biology is affected.
Three questions are worth putting to any Slough sixth form. Which board and specification code is it entering, in writing? How many students are in the Biology group? And if the course does not run, which other sixth form's bar does the student's GCSE profile meet? The ladder above answers the third for the eleven schools that publish a bar.
Two colleges outside the borough publish A-level Biology on OCR Biology A: Windsor College in Windsor and Strode's College in Egham. Both ask for GCSE maths at grade 6 and combined science or biology at double grade 6, for a September 2027 start, as read on 29 September 2026. Neither is part of the Slough counts above.
How do our Slough A-level Biology tutors work with your child's specification?
Every programme starts from the board in the first table. Our expert A-level Biology tutors teach one to one, online or in person, and the first session is diagnostic: the tutor sees where marks are being lost across the papers of the student's own specification before any plan is set. A pacing problem on the long-answer questions needs different work from a gap in the content, and starting both students on the same course of papers wastes time for one of them.
Parents receive a brief update after each session. Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026, and 91% of our students achieve their desired grades. Our Biology tutor service page sets out the wider offer, and our Slough tutoring hub covers every stage we teach in the borough.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Slough on AQA, OCR and Edexcel, from the first term of Year 12 to the final papers in Year 13.
Which exam board does my child's Slough sixth form use for A-level Biology?
Of the twelve Slough schools that entered A-level Biology candidates in 2024/25, ten publish their board. AQA: Upton Court Grammar School, Ditton Park Academy, The Langley Academy, Baylis Court School and St Joseph's Catholic High School. OCR: Langley Grammar School, St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School and Herschel Grammar School. Edexcel: Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College (Salters-Nuffield, Biology A) and The Westgate School (Biology B). Wexham School names no board in the criteria we read, and Beechwood School's 2025-26 A-level list does not include Biology. Ask the school for its specification code.
Can a student with 6-6 in Combined Science take A-level Biology in Slough?
Yes, at six of the eleven Slough schools that publish a Biology bar: Ditton Park Academy, The Langley Academy, Baylis Court School, Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College, The Westgate School and Wexham School, on the Biology grade alone. Several attach Maths or English grades, for example Maths 6 at The Langley Academy and Baylis Court School and Maths 5 at Slough and Eton. The other five ask for 7,7 or more: Langley Grammar School, St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School and St Joseph's Catholic High School at 7,7, Herschel Grammar School at 8-7 and Upton Court Grammar School at 8,8.
Can a student from another school join a Slough grammar school sixth form for A-level Biology?
All four of Slough's selective schools publish that their sixth forms take applicants from other schools. Langley Grammar School says its entry requirements are the same for current Year 11 students and new joiners; Herschel Grammar School says all applicants, internal or external, should apply in the same way; St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School publishes requirements for all applicants, internal and external; and Upton Court Grammar School invites applicants from other schools in the area. The Biology bars at these four run from a Grade 6 in Triple Award Science at St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School to 8,8 in Core and Additional Science at Upton Court Grammar School, for September 2026 entry.
Is Windsor Forest Colleges Group a Slough school for A-level Biology?
It is not a school. GIAS, read on 29 September 2026, records it as a General Further Education College with a Langley address, and DfE's Slough data includes its row, with 42 matched entries. The group's course pages name A-level Biology at Windsor College and at Strode's College in Egham, Surrey, and its Slough & Langley College prospectus for 2026-27 lists no A-levels. Where the 2024/25 students were taught is not stated, so this page counts the row apart from the twelve schools.
Does a bigger Biology department in Slough mean better results?
No. Size sets how wide DfE's 95% interval is, not which side of zero it falls. Across the eleven published Slough rows, half the interval's width times the square root of the entries is between 2.08 and 2.11, so a department needs a score of about 0.23 in either direction at 80 entries and about 0.61 at 12 before its interval clears zero. Two of the eleven rows do, on cohorts of 50 and 24 entries. Value added is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.
How many students take A-level Biology in Slough?
Compare records 414 A-level Biology exam entries across DfE's thirteen Slough rows in 2024/25: 369 across the twelve schools and 45 at Windsor Forest Colleges Group. Langley Grammar School has the most, 80, then Upton Court Grammar School with 62, and the smallest groups are Beechwood School and Wexham School with 3 each. These are exam entries, and DfE's matched counts can be slightly lower: 398 across the eleven published rows.
Does Upton Court Grammar School ask for more than a Biology grade?
Yes. Its September 2026 prospectus asks for 8,8 in Core and Additional Science or 7 in GCSE Biology, and separately treats Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics, Computing and Psychology as science subjects. A student choosing one needs an average GCSE score of 5.5 across their best eight subjects, two need 6.0 and three need 7.0, so Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics together need 7.0.
What happens if a Slough school cannot run Biology because too few students choose it?
Three schools publish general statements. Herschel Grammar School says a subject runs only with viable numbers, St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School says a course with fewer than 10 students may not run, though it may be offered with reduced teacher-led hours, and Upton Court Grammar School says A-level availability depends on popularity. None says Biology is affected. Ask the school about its group size, and use the GCSE ladder above to see which other Slough sixth form's Biology bar the student's profile meets.
