Leading Tuition's one-to-one online GCSE Biology tutoring for Slough students starts from the school the student sits the exam at. DfE's provisional summer 2026 file records 1,021 separate GCSE (9-1) Biology entries from the nine Slough schools with 30 or more entries, whose combined cohort at the end of Key Stage 4 was 1,590 pupils. Entries per 100 pupils run from 16.3 to 100.0 across the nine.

Which Slough pupils sit separate GCSE Biology

The figures below come from the Department for Education's “Subject school level exam data”, which counts entries in GCSE (9-1) Full Course Biology, the separate qualification sat in its own right. Combined Science is a different qualification and is not in these rows. The release was published on 15 October 2026 and last updated on 28 October 2026, and DfE labels it provisional: its key stage 4 performance release says approved result amendments requested by schools have not been applied.

Slough has 18 schools with a Biology row. Nine of them recorded 30 or more entries, and the table sets each of those nine schools' entries beside its number of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4. The last column is the working: entries ÷ pupils × 100, so 229 ÷ 229 × 100 = 100.0 for one school and 33 ÷ 203 × 100 = 16.3 for another.

The two numerical columns count different things, entries and pupils, so the last column shows how the counts sit beside each other. It is not the share of pupils who sat the exam. Four of the nine carry “Grammar” in their registered names: Herschel Grammar School (130 entries, 149 pupils), Langley Grammar School (175, 180), St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School (157, 157) and Upton Court Grammar School (156, 166). The other five rows are The Westgate School (229, 229), St Joseph's Catholic High School (57, 149), Ditton Park Academy (50, 177), Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College (34, 180) and Wexham School (33, 203).

Where a school records fewer Biology entries than pupils, the file does not show what the remaining pupils sat, so no conclusion about the school can be drawn from the ratio alone. What we do with the table is practical. Before any plan is written we ask the family which qualification and exam board the student is entered for, because that decides whether the student is preparing for two separate Biology papers or for Biology content inside Combined Science. The question takes a minute on the first call and removes the most common source of wasted lessons: revising the wrong specification.

Grade counts at the nine schools

The next table reproduces every grade row DfE returned for each school: entries at each grade from 1 to 9, then U and X. A dash means DfE returned no row for that grade at that school. Grade 9 is the top grade. Each row adds to that school's total, for example The Westgate School's 18 + 31 + 50 + 44 + 34 + 28 + 12 + 6 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 229.

The third table adds the sums that matter when a family sets a target. Entries at grades 4 to 9 are the grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 rows added together; entries at grades 7 to 9 are the last three. At The Westgate School the first sum is 44 + 34 + 28 + 12 + 6 + 2 = 126 and the second is 12 + 6 + 2 = 20. At Langley Grammar School they are 1 + 6 + 35 + 39 + 41 + 53 = 175 and 39 + 41 + 53 = 133. Across the nine schools the totals are 907 entries at grades 4 to 9, 573 at grades 7 to 9 and 218 at grade 9, with the remaining 114 entries (1021 − 907) at grades 1 to 3, U or X.

The Westgate School's row holds 99 entries at grades 1 to 3 (18 at grade 1, 31 at grade 2 and 50 at grade 3), 3 at U and 1 at X. Entries at grade 3 also appear in four other rows: 2 at St Joseph's Catholic High School, 4 at Ditton Park Academy, 1 at Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College and 2 at Wexham School. Each school's own counts are what they are; the table is not a league table. These counts do not measure how well any school teaches, and DfE publishes no Progress 8 for these cohorts: its release says it cannot be calculated for 2024/25 and 2025/26.

What the counts change in a tutoring plan is the first target. Where a student's own mock sits mainly at grades 4 to 6, the opening work is securing the content that carries a grade 5 and then lifting it; where it sits at 7 to 9, the work is the marks that separate an 8 from a 9, which in a Biology paper means extended open-response answers, data questions and practical-skills questions. Our tutors write the first block of lessons against the student's own results and school, not against a national average.

The nine Slough schools below the 30-entry line

Nine more Slough schools have a Biology row with fewer than 30 entries. The 30-entry line is this page's own, not DfE's: it keeps counts of a handful of entries from being read as a pattern. These schools are named here, with their entries beside their cohort, so that a family at one of them is not left wondering whether their school was dropped.

A small total beside a large cohort, as at Lynch Hill Enterprise Academy (10 entries, 173 pupils) and The Langley Academy (25 entries, 173 pupils), records only the pupils entered for this qualification. The file does not carry what the rest of the cohort sat, so this page does not describe those schools. DfE withholds the grade breakdown for Al-Madani Girls School, whose row shows a total of 1 entry against 15 pupils and no grade rows. A withheld breakdown is not a zero. At Al-Madani Independent Grammar School the total is 16 entries against 17 pupils, and at Long Close School it is 8 entries against 23 pupils.

For a family at one of these nine schools, the school-level grade counts are too thin to plan from. We plan from the student's own work instead: the last school report, the most recent mock paper and a short diagnostic across the Biology topics. We say so on the first call rather than pretending a school table can stand in for the student.

★★★★★
Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

What the two AQA 8461 Biology papers ask

AQA's GCSE Biology (8461) is assessed through two written papers, set out on AQA's assessments page for 8461. Paper 1 assesses topics 1 to 4: Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response; and Bioenergetics. Paper 2 assesses topics 5 to 7: Homeostasis and response; Inheritance, variation and evolution; and Ecology. Each paper is a written exam of 1 hour 45 minutes at Foundation and Higher Tier, carries 100 marks and counts for 50% of the GCSE.

The arithmetic that matters in a sitting is time per mark: 105 minutes ÷ 100 marks = 1.05 minutes per mark, and across the two papers that is 210 minutes for 200 marks. AQA also states that questions drawing on the required practical activities count for at least 15% of the overall marks, and that a minimum of eight experiments are required for single science qualifications and 16 for double science qualifications. A separate Biology GCSE is a single science qualification.

This page describes AQA 8461 as one specification. It does not say which exam board any Slough school enters, because that is set by the school; we confirm the board with the family and then work to that board's specification and past papers. For an 8461 student the practical consequences are straightforward. Topics 1 to 4 and topics 5 to 7 split cleanly across the two papers, so lessons are planned in two blocks. Practice answers are timed at 1.05 minutes per mark. And practical-skills questions, which carry at least 15% of the marks, are rehearsed with the experiment named in the question rather than left to the last fortnight.

How our online Biology lessons run for a Slough student

Every programme begins with a free consultation. The family tells us the school, the tier the student is entered for, the exam board and the target grade, and sends the latest report or mock paper. From that we build a plan in the order described above: confirm the qualification first, set the first grade target from the student's own results, then work through the specification topic by topic with exam-style questions attached to each.

Lessons are one-to-one and online, so a student anywhere in Slough works with the same expert tutor without travel, with past papers and the student's own marked work on screen. Errors found in a mock paper are taken back to the topic they came from and practised again with exam-style questions. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.

If the school counts on this page change when DfE revises the release, the plan does not change with them: it is built on the student's marks, and the school table is there to tell us which grade range the school's own entries sit in.

Students who go on to sixth form can continue with our A-level Biology tutors in Slough, and the same expert tutors cover the other GCSE subjects the student is sitting, for example GCSE maths tutors in Slough and GCSE English tutors in Slough. The wider tuition in Slough page lists every subject we cover for the town, and the GCSE Biology tuition page sets out the subject itself.

Our expert GCSE Biology tutors help students across Slough with both papers of the specification, whichever board the school enters. Book a free consultation and we will build the first block of lessons around your child's own school and latest results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every pupil in Slough sit separate GCSE Biology?

No. In DfE's provisional summer 2026 file the nine Slough schools with 30 or more entries recorded 1,021 separate GCSE Biology entries against 1,590 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4, which is 64.2 entries per 100 pupils (1,021 ÷ 1,590 × 100). By school the ratio runs from 16.3 to 100.0. The file does not show what the other pupils sat, so ask the school which qualification your child is entered for.

How is the grade 4 and above count worked out?

It is the sum of the grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 rows in DfE's file. At The Westgate School that is 44 + 34 + 28 + 12 + 6 + 2 = 126 of 229 entries. At Wexham School it is 3 + 7 + 8 + 4 + 5 + 4 = 31 of 33 entries. The grade 7 and above count is the last three rows added in the same way: 4 + 5 + 4 = 13 at Wexham School.

Is the Slough data final?

No. DfE published the key stage 4 release on 15 October 2026, updated it on 28 October 2026 and describes the data as provisional, because approved result amendments requested by schools have not been applied. The 2025/26 and 2024/25 cohorts also have no Progress 8, which DfE says it cannot calculate for those years. Treat every count on this page as a summer 2026 snapshot that may move when DfE revises the release.

What do the two AQA 8461 Biology papers cover?

Paper 1 assesses topics 1 to 4: Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response; and Bioenergetics. Paper 2 assesses topics 5 to 7: Homeostasis and response; Inheritance, variation and evolution; and Ecology. Each is a written exam of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, worth 50% of the GCSE, so 105 ÷ 100 gives 1.05 minutes per mark. AQA 8461 is described here as one specification; your child's school sets the board.

How is separate Biology different from Combined Science in these figures?

DfE's rows count GCSE (9-1) Full Course Biology, the separate qualification, and Combined Science is a different qualification that is not in them. AQA states that a minimum of eight experiments are required for single science qualifications and 16 for double science qualifications. So the 1,021 entries in the nine Slough schools above are separate Biology entries, not Combined Science entries, and neither number can be added to the other.

What if my child's school is not one of the nine?

Nine other Slough schools have a Biology row below 30 entries: The Langley Academy (25 entries, 173 pupils), Baylis Court School (20, 157), Grove Academy (17, 121), Beechwood School (16, 147), Al-Madani Independent Grammar School (16, 17), Eden Girls' School (15, 124), Lynch Hill Enterprise Academy (10, 173), Long Close School (8, 23) and Al-Madani Girls School (1, 15). DfE withholds the grade breakdown for the last of these. We plan from the student's own marks.

How do your online GCSE Biology lessons work?

Lessons are one-to-one and online, led by one of our expert tutors. The first step is a free consultation covering school, tier, exam board and target grade, using the student's latest report or mock paper. The tutor then plans two blocks, one for AQA topics 1 to 4 and one for topics 5 to 7 where the board is AQA, and times practice answers at 1.05 minutes per mark. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.

Source note: school counts are from DfE's Subject school level exam data, summer 2026 exams, retrieved on 2026-11-02T20:23:03Z UTC; AQA facts are from AQA's published 8461 assessments page. Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026.
