Ten providers entered students for A-level Physics in Slough in 2024/25, nine schools and one further education college, with 266 exam entries between them. At four of the nine schools the GCSE Maths grade asked for Physics is higher than at that school's own Biology and Chemistry, and at none is it lower. Only Langley Grammar School's value-added interval lies above zero; two lie below it.

Our expert A-level Physics tutors help students across Slough with the mechanics, fields and practical analysis their own sixth form's papers carry, and with the algebra and trigonometry that Physics leans on, working to the specification the school enters rather than a generic syllabus.

Which Slough providers enter students for A-level Physics, and on which board?

The Department for Education's 2024/25 data holds 13 providers in Slough, local authority 871, and ten of them have an A-level Physics row. Nine are schools. The tenth, Windsor Forest Colleges Group, is recorded by Get Information About Schools (GIAS), read on 16 October 2026, as a General Further Education College for ages 16 plus, not as a school, so this page counts it separately from the nine.

The table gives each provider's A-level students, its Physics exam entries and the share of those students entered for Physics. It is sorted by entries, largest first, so the order says nothing about results. The last three rows have no Physics row in either DfE table.

The four selective schools, Langley Grammar, St Bernard's, Upton Court and Herschel, have 666 of the 1,794 A-level students across the 13 providers (37%) and 168 of the 266 Physics entries (63%). Each enters between 23.7% and 26.6% of its own A-level students for Physics, and the six other providers with entries sit between 7.8% and 16.2%. That describes where the entries are. It does not explain it.

Boards come next, because the board decides which papers a student sits.

Of the eight schools in that table, three enter AQA, three Edexcel and two OCR, and the college's course pages name OCR as well. Two of the three AQA schools say which Paper 3 option they teach, and the two differ: St Bernard's states Option D, Turning Points in Physics, and St Joseph's lists Medical physics as its ninth topic. A student moving between the two would change option as well as classroom.

The board is a practical matter before it is an academic one, because the papers are shaped differently. As The Langley Academy's guide sets AQA out, Paper 3 covers practical skills and data analysis and an optional topic, takes 2 hours, carries 80 marks and counts for 32% of the A-level, against 85 marks and 34% for each of Papers 1 and 2. Slough and Eton's page sets Edexcel out with Papers 1 and 2 at 30% each and Paper 3, which can draw on all topics, at 40% over 2 hours 30 minutes, and Ditton Park Academy's prospectus says half of that paper tests knowledge and understanding of practical skills and techniques. For OCR, Langley Grammar School's guide describes two papers of 2 hours 15 minutes covering all of the A-level plus a 1 hour 30 minute paper, and Herschel Grammar School describes three written papers and a non-examined practical component. A student who revises Paper 3 from another board's past papers is practising the wrong shape of paper.

The practical endorsement is reported separately from the A-level grade and is assessed by the student's own teachers, so tuition cannot sign it off. The board-by-board detail is on our A-level Physics page, with a page each for AQA, Edexcel and OCR. The awarding bodies publish the specifications themselves: AQA 7408, OCR Physics A, H556 and Pearson Edexcel Physics.

Know which board your child's sixth form enters? Our A-level Physics tutors in Slough work from that specification's own past papers, from the 80-mark practical paper on AQA to Edexcel's all-topics paper, and from the optional topic the school actually teaches.

Does A-level Physics ask for more GCSE Maths than Biology or Chemistry in Slough?

At four Slough schools it does, and at none does it ask for less. Nine Slough schools enter students for Physics. Each publishes its own GCSE entry grades for the sciences and for A-level Maths, so the Maths grade attached to Physics can be set beside the grades the same school attaches to Biology, Chemistry and Maths itself. The comparison covers those nine schools and no others. Windsor Forest Colleges Group is not a school, and the three providers with no Physics entries are dealt with below.

Read down the last column. At Herschel Grammar School, Langley Grammar School, Ditton Park Academy and Wexham School, Physics carries a GCSE Maths grade that Biology and Chemistry at the same school do not, or carry at a lower figure. At the other five schools the three sciences are treated alike: the same grade at Slough and Eton, The Langley Academy and St Joseph's, and none printed for any of the three at Upton Court and St Bernard's. St Bernard's publishes one line for all three sciences, “Grade 6 for a Triple Award Science or a grade 7 if they do the Double Award Science”, with no Maths grade on it, and its Mathematics row is left out of this comparison. At none of the nine is Physics set lower.

The second pattern is tighter. At each of the four schools where Physics rises above the other sciences, the grade it asks for equals what that school asks for A-level Maths itself: 7 at Herschel and Langley Grammar, 6+ at Ditton Park and 6 at Wexham. At Slough and Eton (5 against 6), The Langley Academy (6 against 7) and St Joseph's (6 against 7), where Physics does not rise above the other sciences, it sits a grade below the school's Maths grade. The schools' documents do not say why they set the grades this way, so this page does not guess. What the data does show is that nearly every Slough Physics student takes the Maths A-level as well: DfE's subject-combination data record 248 of the 266 Slough students entered for Physics in 2024/25 (93.2%) also entered Maths, and 67 of them also entered Further Maths.

Herschel Grammar School shows the spread inside one booklet. Its Physics line asks “at least a Grade 7 in Maths” and adds “It is highly recommended that A Level Maths is taken as a complementary subject”. Its Biology line asks for at least a Grade 6, and its Chemistry line calls a Grade 6 or above desirable. Ditton Park Academy's Physics line adds “Ideally should also be studying A-Level Mathematics”, and Windsor Forest Colleges Group advises A-level Maths alongside Physics. Our Slough A-level Chemistry tutors page sets out the Chemistry side of the same sixth forms, and our Herschel Grammar School sixth form guide and Langley Grammar School sixth form guide give each school's full entry table.

Upton Court Grammar School prints no Maths grade for any science beyond its general requirement of at least grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics, but its prospectus lists physics, mathematics and further mathematics among eight science subjects and sets an average across a student's best eight GCSEs: 6.0 for two of them and 7.0 for three. A student choosing Physics and Maths there has two before choosing a third, so 6.0 applies, and adding Further Mathematics or Chemistry makes three and raises the average to 7.0.

A Physics paper is also a maths paper. Our expert A-level Physics tutors in Slough work on the rearranging, the trigonometry and the unit handling that lose marks in Physics papers, alongside the physics itself, and build each programme around the student's own board and the marks they are actually losing.

Which Slough sixth forms had no A-level Physics entries, and what are the routes in?

Three providers in DfE's Slough data have no Physics row, and none of their A-level students was entered for it in 2024/25: The Westgate School (61 A-level students), Baylis Court School (49) and Beechwood School (34). What their own documents say differs, and a document is not a timetable.

For a student whose school does not enter Physics, the routes are another sixth form or a college. St Bernard's, Upton Court and Langley Grammar School each say they take applicants from other schools: St Bernard's publishes “Entry requirements for all applicants, both internal and external”, Upton Court invites applicants “from year 11 students from Upton Court Grammar School, and other schools in the area”, and Langley Grammar School offers “a limited number of places to students from other schools”. Each still applies its own Physics bar: grade 7 plus Maths 7 at Langley Grammar, a 7 in Physics or 8,8 in Combined Science at Upton Court, and a 6 on triple or a 7 on double science at St Bernard's. Our Slough A-level Biology tutors page sets out how the four selective sixth forms treat external applicants.

The further education route has a geographic caveat. Windsor Forest Colleges Group's course pages list A-level Physics at Windsor College in Windsor, Berkshire, and at Strode's College in Egham, Surrey, both on OCR Physics A, for a September 2027 start. They ask for GCSE maths at grade 6 and combined science or physics at double grade 6. GIAS gives the group's address as Station Road, Langley, in Slough. Where the students behind its 2024/25 row were taught is not stated.

Group size matters too. St Bernard's option-block document says that if fewer than 10 students opt to take a course the school may not be able to run it, though it may still offer it with reduced teacher-led hours. Physics groups in 2024/25 were 16 at Slough and Eton and at The Langley Academy, 11 at St Joseph's, and single figures at Ditton Park and Wexham. None of those schools says Physics is affected. The useful questions to put to any school are how many students are in the Physics group and what happens if the number falls.

What does DfE's 2024/25 value added show for Slough's A-level Physics?

The Department for Education publishes a value-added score for A-level Physics at each school, with a 95% confidence interval and a count of matched entries. It compares each student's result with the national average for students who started from the same key stage 4 attainment. A figure tells you something only if its interval lies wholly on one side of zero.

Source: Department for Education, Schools and colleges: qualification and subject value added, 2024/25, filtered to GCE A level, the A level cohort and Physics; query run on 16 October 2026. Sorted by matched entries, largest first.

One interval lies above zero. Langley Grammar School scores 0.41, with an interval of 0.08 to 0.74 on 49 matched entries. Two lie below it: St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School at -0.79 (-1.17 to -0.41) on 37, and Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College at -0.76 (-1.34 to -0.18) on 16. The other six published intervals include zero, so they do not separate from the national average in either direction. Two of those six end within 0.02 of it: The Langley Academy's upper bound is 0.01 on 15 entries and St Joseph's is 0.02 on 11. Wexham School's row is suppressed because its cohort is too small to publish.

The table does not sort by type of school. Its one row above zero and one of its two rows below are selective schools, the other row below is not, and two selective schools include zero. Cohort size drives how wide an interval is: it spans 0.66 of a grade on 49 entries at Langley Grammar and 1.54 on 9 entries at Ditton Park, so a small department needs a far larger gap to separate from zero. These are progress scores for one cohort in one year, and value added is not a measure of teaching quality.

Matched entries are not the same as exam entries, because they count only students whose prior attainment could be matched. St Bernard's has 37 matched against 42 exam entries, the college 39 against 41 and The Langley Academy 15 against 16. The nine published rows total 253 matched entries, or 214 across the eight published schools once the college's 39 are set aside.

Whatever your child's sixth form scores, the useful question is which marks they are losing now. Our expert A-level Physics tutors in Slough start from the student's own mock papers and the specification their school enters, and spend the time where the marks are.

How do our Slough A-level Physics tutors work with your child's specification?

Our expert A-level Physics tutors help students across Slough at AS and A level, working from the specification and paper structure the student's own sixth form enters. For a student at St Joseph's, St Bernard's or The Langley Academy that is AQA and its 80-mark Paper 3. At Upton Court, Slough and Eton or Ditton Park it is Edexcel's 40% all-topics paper, and at Langley Grammar or Herschel it is OCR Physics A.

The first session is diagnostic. A student who is losing marks on a multi-step calculation needs different work from one who is losing them on the wording of a practical question, and where the school asks for a Maths grade at or near its own Maths A-level bar, the diagnostic looks at both subjects together. Programmes are built around the student's own papers and the calendar their sixth form is working to, and parents receive a brief update after each session.

Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026, and 91% of our students achieve their desired grades. Our Physics tutor service page sets out the wider offer, and our Slough tutoring hub covers every stage we teach in the borough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does A-level Physics in Slough ask for more GCSE Maths than Biology or Chemistry?

At four of the nine Slough schools that enter Physics students, yes. Herschel Grammar School asks at least a grade 7 in Maths for Physics, against a grade 6 for Biology and a desirable grade 6 for Chemistry. Langley Grammar School asks grade 7 for Physics and prints no Maths grade for Biology or Chemistry. Ditton Park Academy asks 6+ against 5+, and Wexham School prints Maths 6 on its Physics line only. At the other five schools Physics is treated like the other sciences, and at no school does it ask for less.

Which Slough sixth forms enter students for A-level Physics?

Ten providers have a Physics row in the Department for Education's 2024/25 data: Langley Grammar School (49 exam entries), St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School (42), Windsor Forest Colleges Group (41), Upton Court Grammar School (40), Herschel Grammar School (37), Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College (16), The Langley Academy (16), St Joseph's Catholic High School (11), Ditton Park Academy (9) and Wexham School (5). That is 266 entries. The Westgate School, Baylis Court School and Beechwood School have no Physics row. The group is a college, not a school.

Which exam board does my child's Slough sixth form use for A-level Physics?

Of the eight Slough schools whose documents name a Physics board, three enter AQA (St Bernard's with Option D, The Langley Academy, and St Joseph's on 7408), three enter Edexcel (Upton Court, Slough and Eton, Ditton Park) and two enter OCR Physics A (Langley Grammar, Herschel). Windsor Forest Colleges Group's course pages name OCR Physics A. Ask the school for the board in writing, because Paper 3 counts for 32% of the qualification on AQA and 40% on Edexcel.

Do Slough's A-level Physics students also take A-level Maths?

Almost all do. DfE's subject-combination data record 266 Slough students entered for Physics in 2024/25, and 248 of them (93.2%) also entered Maths. A further 67 also entered Further Maths, and six entered no other maths or science subject. Herschel Grammar School says it is highly recommended that A Level Maths is taken as a complementary subject, and Ditton Park Academy says students ideally should also be studying A-Level Mathematics. Ask the school whether Maths is a condition or only advice.

Which Slough sixth form has the only A-level Physics score above zero?

Langley Grammar School, with value added of 0.41 and a 95% confidence interval from 0.08 to 0.74 on 49 matched entries. Two intervals lie wholly below zero: St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School (-0.79, from -1.17 to -0.41, on 37 entries) and Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College (-0.76, from -1.34 to -0.18, on 16). The other six published intervals include zero, and Wexham School's row is suppressed. Value added is a progress measure for one cohort and not a measure of teaching quality.

Is Windsor Forest Colleges Group a Slough school for A-level Physics?

No. GIAS, read on 16 October 2026, records it as a General Further Education College for ages 16 plus, listed under Slough local authority 871. DfE's Physics tables include its row, with 41 exam entries and 39 matched entries, and this page counts it separately from the nine schools. Its course pages place A-level Physics at Windsor College in Windsor, Berkshire, and Strode's College in Egham, Surrey, for a September 2027 start. Where its 2024/25 students were taught is not stated.

What can a student do if their Slough school does not enter anyone for Physics?

The Westgate School, Baylis Court School and Beechwood School had no Physics entries in 2024/25, from 61, 49 and 34 A-level students. Westgate's own pages still list A-Level Physics with AQA, so ask whether it will run. Other routes are Langley Grammar School, St Bernard's and Upton Court Grammar School, which each say they take applicants from other schools and each apply their own Physics bar: grade 7 plus Maths 7 at Langley Grammar, a 7 or 8,8 at Upton Court, and a 6 on triple or 7 on double science at St Bernard's.
