A-level Chemistry in Slough is taught across 11 schools and one further education college, which between them account for 12 subject rows in the Department for Education's 2024/25 value-added data. Eleven of those rows are published, four have a 95% confidence interval that excludes zero, and Langley Grammar School is the only one above it, at 0.4 from 95 matched entries. The GCSE Maths grade each sixth form attaches to Chemistry runs from grade 6 down to none stated.

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students across Slough with the calculation papers and the organic mechanisms that carry the subject's level 2 maths, working to the specification their own sixth form enters rather than a generic syllabus.

Herschel Grammar School asks a higher GCSE Maths grade for Biology than for Chemistry

Herschel Grammar School's sixth form Course Information booklet for entry in 2026 sets out minimum entry requirements subject by subject. Its Biology line reads “Grade 7 in Biology or grades 8-7 in Combined Science, and at least a Grade 6 in Maths”. Its Chemistry line reads “Grade 7 in Chemistry or grades 8-7 in Combined Science. A Grade 6 or above in Maths is also desirable”. Same booklet, same intake, same September: the maths grade is a condition of entry to Biology and a preference for Chemistry.

That is the reverse of the direction most sixth forms set, and it matters because of how the two qualifications are examined. The Department for Education's subject content for the sciences requires A level chemistry to award at least 20% of its marks for level 2 mathematics against 10% for biology; our Leeds A-level Chemistry tutors page sets out what that split means in practice.

None of this says Herschel Grammar School has set its bar wrongly. A department knows its own intake, and a school may judge that its Chemistry teaching carries a student who arrives below a grade 6. What a parent should take from it is narrower and more useful: at this school the maths grade will not stop a Chemistry application, and the arithmetic load arrives anyway once the course starts.

Across the borough the condition is set inconsistently enough that it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Where a Chemistry-specific maths condition exists at all, it is a grade 6 at four schools and a grade 5 at two. Three state none for the subject, and Upton Court Grammar School relies on its general sixth-form rule of at least grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics, which sits alongside a separate requirement that students taking three science subjects average 7.0 across their best eight GCSEs. Langley Grammar School's Sixth Form Prospectus says subject-specific requirements appear in a Sixth Form Course Guide and Sixth Form Information Booklet; its Chemistry bar was not found on the pages we read on 16 October 2026.

Three Slough schools enter Chemistry under a different awarding body from their own Biology

A student taking Chemistry and Biology together is not necessarily working to one examiner's house style. At three Slough schools the two sciences sit with different awarding bodies, and in each case both halves are printed in a single school document, so the pairing can be checked in one click.

The practical consequence is narrow but real. Past papers, mark-scheme conventions, the order topics are taught in and the names given to practical work all differ between AQA and OCR. A student revising Chemistry from a Biology-board resource, or a tutor who assumes one board covers both, loses time to material that will not be examined in that form.

For scale rather than survey: 10 of the 11 Slough schools with an A-level Chemistry row publish an awarding body, and no board for Wexham School was found on the pages we read. Our Slough A-level Biology tutors page sets out the Biology side of the same departments in full.

What Slough's published Chemistry value added separates, and what it does not

The Department for Education publishes a subject-level value-added score for A-level Chemistry, with a 95% confidence interval and a count of matched entries. The score compares each student's result with the national average for students who began with the same key stage 4 attainment, so it already adjusts for prior attainment. The interval matters more than the score: a figure is only telling you something if its interval lies wholly on one side of zero.

Know which board your child's sixth form enters? Our A-level Chemistry tutors in Slough work through that specification's own practical techniques and past papers, from titration and reflux to the transition-metal and organic-synthesis topics that sit late in Year 13.

Two things to hold in mind before reading the table. These are progress scores for one cohort in one year, the students who finished their A levels in 2024/25, and a department's intake, staffing and option blocks all move between years. And value added is not a measure of teaching quality: it asks whether a cohort's grades came out above or below the national average for students with the same key stage 4 starting point, which is a narrower question than how well a subject is taught. A score below zero is not a verdict on a department, and three of the rows below sit there.

Four of the 11 published rows clear that bar. Langley Grammar School is the only one above zero, at 0.4 from 95 matched entries. Three sit entirely below it: St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School at -0.36 on 61 entries, Slough and Eton CofE Business and Enterprise College at -0.75 on 23, and Baylis Court School at -0.96 on 12. The other seven intervals include zero, which means the data does not distinguish them from the national average in either direction.

It is worth saying what the table does not show. Selectivity does not sort it. Slough has four selective schools with a Chemistry row, and among those four one interval lies entirely above zero, one entirely below, and two include it. That is the result you should expect, because value added exists precisely to strip out the advantage of a higher-attaining intake; a school cannot score well on it simply by admitting stronger students.

Cohort size drives how wide each interval is. Across these 11 rows, half the interval width multiplied by the square root of the matched entries stays between 2.234 and 2.265, so a department entering 12 students needs a far larger score to separate from zero than one entering 95. Baylis Court School's interval spans 1.30 of a grade on 12 entries; Langley Grammar School's spans 0.46 on 95. Small departments are not being measured less fairly, they are being measured less precisely.

Matched entries are not the same as exam entries: they count only students whose prior attainment could be matched. Across the 11 published rows they total 427, and across the 10 published school rows — excluding the further education college's 40 — they total 387.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

If your school does not run A-level Chemistry, what are the routes in?

Not every Slough student can take Chemistry where they are. Thirteen Slough providers appear in the 2024/25 dataset and 12 have an A-level Chemistry row; Beechwood School has none at all. Wexham School's row is suppressed, though its own entrance and subject criteria publish a Chemistry requirement of grade 6, or 6/6 in Combined Science.

Two routes are open. The first is another Slough sixth form. Upton Court Grammar School states that it invites applicants “from year 11 students from Upton Court Grammar School, and other schools in the area”, so its OCR Chemistry A course is not closed to outsiders, subject to its 8,8 or grade 7 science bar and the average-score rule.

The second is the further education route, with a caveat about geography. Windsor Forest Colleges Group holds the only non-school Chemistry row in Slough's data, but its A-level Chemistry teaching is not in Slough. The course runs at the Windsor College campus in Windsor and at Strode's College in Egham, Surrey, both awarding the OCR GCE A Level in Chemistry A. Windsor College asks for “GCSEs in maths at grade 6 and combined science or chemistry at double grade 6” and assesses by “two externally assessed papers of 2 hours and 15 minutes, and one of 1 hour and 30 minutes”, plus compulsory practical endorsements carried out in lessons. A Slough student taking that route is committing to a daily journey out of the borough.

If the decision is still open at GCSE, the maths grade is the thing to protect. Our Slough A-level Maths tutors page covers the mathematics side of the same sixth forms, and our Slough 11+ tuition page covers the separate Year 7 selective route into the grammar schools named above.

How our Slough A-level Chemistry tutors work with your child's specification

Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students across Slough at both AS and A level, working to the board their sixth form actually enters rather than a generic syllabus. For a student at St Joseph's Catholic High School that means AQA 7405, whose Paper 3 carries 90 marks with 40 of them on practical techniques and data analysis. For a student at Langley Grammar School or Upton Court Grammar School it means OCR Chemistry A, structured as two 2-hour-15-minute papers and one of 1 hour 30 minutes.

Most of the ground that separates a B from an A in Chemistry is quantitative, which follows directly from the 20% floor: moles and titration arithmetic, equilibrium constants, rate equations, enthalpy and entropy, electrode potentials and pH. We work those topics as calculation practice against the student's own past papers, not as theory.

The practical endorsement is assessed by the school, not by us and not by the exam board, and it is reported separately from the A-level grade. What tuition can do is strengthen the written-paper questions that draw on the same apparatus and techniques — titration with burette and pipette, distillation and heating under reflux, purification by recrystallisation, thin-layer chromatography, melting point apparatus and measuring rates of reaction by two different methods — all of which the DfE subject content names for chemistry specifically.

Programmes are built around a student's own gaps, identified from school reports, mock papers and topic-by-topic diagnostics, and around the calendar their sixth form is working to. The full subject content for the sciences is published by the Department for Education at GCE AS and A level science.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does A-level Chemistry in Slough require a GCSE Maths grade?

At most Slough sixth forms, yes, but the bar is not the same everywhere. Four schools state a GCSE Maths grade 6 for Chemistry: The Westgate School, The Langley Academy, Baylis Court School and St Joseph's Catholic High School. Slough and Eton CofE Business and Enterprise College and Ditton Park Academy ask for grade 5. Herschel Grammar School calls a grade 6 in Maths desirable rather than required. Upton Court Grammar School attaches no Chemistry-specific maths condition beyond its general grade 5, and St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School and Wexham School state none for the subject.

Can a student take A-level Chemistry at Herschel Grammar School without a grade 6 in GCSE Maths?

Herschel Grammar School's Course Information booklet for entry in 2026 describes a Grade 6 or above in Maths as desirable for Chemistry rather than required, so it is not stated as a barrier. The stated Chemistry condition is a Grade 7 in Chemistry or grades 8-7 in Combined Science, alongside the school's general requirement of a GCSE average point score of at least 5.5 across all subjects; a score of 6.8 is required to take four A levels. The same booklet does require at least a Grade 6 in Maths for Biology. Entry requirements change year to year, so confirm directly with the school before applying.

Which exam board will my child sit for A-level Chemistry in Slough?

It depends on the school, and it is not safe to assume it matches their Biology board. Of the 11 Slough schools entering A-level Chemistry candidates, 10 publish an awarding body: five use AQA, four use OCR Chemistry A and one, Slough and Eton CofE Business and Enterprise College, uses Edexcel. No board for Wexham School was found on the pages we read. Langley Grammar School names OCR Chemistry A specification H432, and St Joseph's Catholic High School names AQA 7405.

Can a student sit different exam boards for Chemistry and Biology at the same school?

Yes, and three Slough schools publish exactly that. St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School lists AQA Chemistry 7405 alongside OCR Biology A H420 in one Course Guidelines document. Upton Court Grammar School follows OCR A for Chemistry and AQA for Biology in one prospectus. The Westgate School lists AQA for Chemistry and Pearson Edexcel Biology B on one science page. A student taking both subjects at those schools works to two specifications and two sets of past papers.

Which Slough sixth form has the only A-level Chemistry score above zero?

Langley Grammar School. In the DfE's 2024/25 subject value-added data it records 0.4 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.17 to 0.63 across 95 matched entries, and it is the only one of the 11 published Slough rows whose interval lies entirely above zero. Three rows lie entirely below it: St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School, Slough and Eton CofE Business and Enterprise College and Baylis Court School. The remaining seven intervals include zero, so they do not separate from the national average. Value added is a progress measure for one cohort in one year and is not a measure of teaching quality, so a score below zero is not a verdict on a department.

Do Slough's selective schools do better at A-level Chemistry?

Not as a group, and the published table says so plainly. Slough has four selective schools with an A-level Chemistry row. Of those four, one interval lies entirely above zero, one lies entirely below it, and two include zero. Value added already adjusts for each student's prior attainment at key stage 4, which is the whole purpose of the measure, so a school admitting higher-attaining pupils gets no automatic credit from it. Selectivity does not sort the Slough Chemistry table in either direction.

Why is there no A-level Chemistry value-added score for Wexham School?

Its row is suppressed. Of the 12 Slough A-level Chemistry rows in the 2024/25 dataset, 11 carry published figures and Wexham School's shows a suppression marker in place of every value, including the entry count. DfE suppresses figures where the cohort is too small to publish safely. Wexham School's own entrance and subject criteria do publish what it asks for: a grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry, or 6/6 in Combined Science. A suppressed row says nothing about quality.

Is Windsor Forest Colleges Group a Slough school?

No. Get Information About Schools records it as a 16 plus provider whose school type is Further education, specifically General Further Education, with a Slough local authority code of 871. It is a college, not a school, which is why this page counts it separately: 12 Chemistry rows cover 11 schools plus that one college. Its A-level Chemistry teaching sits at the Windsor College campus in Windsor and at Strode's College in Egham, both outside Slough, and Windsor College asks for GCSE maths at grade 6.
