Trafford Council confirms the Consortium test date as 14 September 2026 for September 2027 entry, and that the borough's other two grammar schools, Loreto Grammar School and St Ambrose College, "have a different test, scheduled for 18 September 2026." The Consortium is also partway through changing test provider: the paper sat in September 2026 is set by GL Assessment; for September 2028 entry the provider becomes Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE), confirmed directly by Sale Grammar School's own published Consortium statement; and for September 2029 entry onward FSCE continues but the test moves earlier, to the summer term of Year 5. That is the summary. Most 11+-focused advice stops at the grammar schools, which leaves an assumption unexamined: that a child who does not get a grammar place in Trafford has a straightforward non-selective fallback. Trafford Council's own guidance for families applying for September 2027 entry says otherwise, for two specific parts of the borough. Under the heading "Important advice for Altrincham and Sale residents", the council states plainly: "All secondary schools in the Altrincham and Sale areas are significantly oversubscribed." That is the council's own wording, and it is specific to those two areas; the council does not make the same claim about every part of Trafford, and we are not extending it beyond where the council put it.
The practical consequence is that a family in Altrincham or Sale needs a realistic secondary strategy that goes beyond "apply to the grammar school and the nearest comprehensive as backup", because the backup itself may be full. The council's Starting secondary school page confirms the timetable that applies borough-wide: the application system for September 2027 entry opened on 1 September 2026, the closing date for applications was 31 October 2026, and National Offer Day, when every applicant receives their offer, is 1 March 2027. Applications submitted after the 31 October deadline are treated as late and are considered only once on-time applications have been processed, so the closing date, not the exam date, is the one to plan a family's whole application list around.
Rather than repeat marketing claims, we checked DfE's own Compare School and College Performance service directly for the schools we could locate in it. This covers four of the seven Trafford grammar schools; we were not able to source individual figures for Stretford Grammar, Urmston Grammar or Loreto Grammar from that service, and we name only the four we have checked rather than imply the same picture holds across all seven.

All four schools sit well above the England state-funded average of 46.1. One national figure is worth flagging so a Trafford parent is not caught out by it elsewhere: DfE's own Key Stage 4 performance release confirms that "progress measures will not be published for the 2024/25 and 2025/26 academic years" for any school nationally, Trafford's grammar schools included, because those cohorts did not sit Key Stage 2 assessments during the Covid-19 pandemic disruption, and the department has confirmed there is no replacement measure for those two years. A results comparison that quotes a current Progress 8 score for a Trafford school is quoting a figure DfE has not published.

That gives a Trafford family a genuine Year 7 to Year 13 through-route at the same school, which is not guaranteed in every selective area and is worth factoring into a school choice that is otherwise made on Year 7 admissions criteria alone.
A-level performance is where our own tuition tends to matter most for Trafford sixth-formers, because subject choice, exam board and university ambition all narrow at once. Five of them, Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale Grammar School, Stretford Grammar School and Urmston Grammar School, form the Trafford Consortium and share one entrance test, sat on 14 September 2026 for 2027 entry. Families in those two areas need a wider application strategy than "apply to the grammar and the nearest comprehensive".
No, and the change is often reported as a single blanket switch when it is not. The test sat on 14 September 2026, for September 2027 entry, remains a GL Assessment paper. For September 2028 entry the Consortium's provider is Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE) and the test is sat in September 2027, moving from verbal, non-verbal and mathematical reasoning to Key Stage 2 English and maths. For September 2029 entry onward, FSCE continues as the provider but the test moves earlier again, to the latter part of the summer term of Year 5. Three different arrangements apply to three different year groups.

DfE's Compare School and College Performance service records an Attainment 8 score of 80.6 for Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, 78.5 for Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, 76.2 for Saint Ambrose College and 76.1 for Sale Grammar School, all well above the England state-funded average of 46.1. We have not been able to source individual Attainment 8 figures for Stretford Grammar, Urmston Grammar or Loreto Grammar and do not claim parity for them; we name only the four schools we have checked. DfE has also confirmed it will not publish Progress 8 scores for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 academic years, for any school nationally, because those cohorts did not sit Key Stage 2 assessments.

That gives Trafford families a genuine through-route from Year 7 to Year 13 at the same school, which is not the case in every selective area.

Trafford Council's separate application system for September 2027 secondary entry opened on 1 September 2026, and the closing date for applications was 31 October 2026, with National Offer Day on 1 March 2027. Applications received after 31 October are treated as late and processed only once on-time applications have been dealt with, so a family needed to register for the Consortium test in June, well before the council's own October deadline became relevant.
