After the TMUA: Preparing for Your Oxford Mathematics and Computer Science Interview

Two subjects, two interviews and a second college you did not choose — what December 2026 actually holds.

In the 2025–26 cycle — the last one run on the MAT rather than the TMUA — it drew 564 applications, 206 shortlisted candidates and 90 offers. Interviews for 2027 entry run on Monday 14 to Thursday 17 December 2026, online, with some colleges starting the week of Monday 7 December. Oxford states what they are for in its own words.

What does Oxford say the interview is for?

Oxford’s Mathematics and Computer Science course page draws the line between test and interview more plainly than any other Oxford page for these courses. It lists what tutors want — “strong mathematical ability, the ability to think and work independently, the capacity to absorb and use new ideas, and a great deal of enthusiasm” — and then says: “We use this set of criteria and the result of the TMUA to decide whom to invite for interview. At the interview we will explore how you tackle unfamiliar problems and new ideas. We are more interested in how you approach problem-solving than whether you can get straight to a solution.”

Read the two sentences in order. The test decides the invitation; the interview explores something the test never asked about. And the sentence about the solution is a direct instruction: an interview in which you reach the answer in silence has given Oxford less than one in which you do not reach it out loud.

The same page adds a reassurance that matters for a joint degree half of whose applicants have never studied the subject formally: “We do not require any previous formal qualification in computer science, but we do expect you to demonstrate a real interest in the subject.”

How that judgement is recorded is also published. The Department of Computer Science, which coordinates admissions for all three of its courses, writes that “the applicant’s performance in each interview is judged according to the admissions criteria, codified on a numeric scale against agreed descriptors, and shared among all tutors involved in admissions, together with the applicants’ UCAS forms and their test results.” A second number is produced in December, and unlike the first it is produced from your working rather than from your answers.

The TMUA is 20 multiple-choice questions in each of two papers, 75 minutes each, no calculator, reported as one overall score. Nothing in that design records how you reached an answer. Our Oxford Mathematics page sets out the five things Oxford says it may ask you to do instead.

564 applications, 206 shortlisted, 90 offers: the published arithmetic

Oxford’s Department of Computer Science publishes an admissions summary each January. The most recent covers the 2025–26 cycle, and gives raw counts rather than percentages for all three of its courses. That cycle ran on the Mathematics Admissions Test, not the TMUA: the department records that the MAT ran “from 2007 to 2025” and that for the 2026 admissions round it does not take place. The test column of that report therefore does not carry across. The interview arithmetic does.

Mathematics and Computer Science is the biggest of the three on every measure: it took more applications than Computer Science, shortlisted more than Computer Science and Computer Science and Philosophy combined, and made 90 of the 163 offers. Of its 206 shortlisted candidates, 90 received an offer.

The shortlist is sized deliberately. The department states that “usually we shortlist between 2 and 3 for each offer”; Oxford’s Mathematical Institute puts the same policy from the other end, “we shortlist around three applicants per place to interview”. Oxford’s own course page gives the longer view as a three-year average across 2023–25: “Interviewed: 29% Successful: 10% Intake: 59”. The degree is a BA or an MMathCompSci over 3 or 4 years, the UCAS code is GG14, the entry requirement is A*A*A with the A*s in Maths and Further Maths if available, and the application deadline was 15 October 2026.

Joint-degree candidates are interviewed twice over, and Oxford publishes both the rule and what actually happened last time. The rule, from the Department of Computer Science’s How to apply page: “If you are applying for a joint degree, you might have single-subject interviews for each part of the degree, or there may be an interview with tutors from both disciplines.” What happened, from the same department’s admissions summary: “Applicants for joint degrees are typically given separate interviews in the two subjects. In December 2025 most applicants were interviewed twice by their first college and once or more by their second college.”

Three interviews, then, for most people, split across two colleges and two subjects. That is a different preparation problem from a single-honours interview, because a strong mathematics session does not carry a weak computing one, and the two are judged against their own criteria.

The second college is not chosen by you and not chosen by the first college either. The department describes the mechanism: “Each applicant is associated with a first college, either of their choosing, reallocated to them or, in the case of open applications, randomly assigned to them in a way that aims to even out the competition for places across the colleges. Each applicant is also randomly assigned a second college by an algorithm aiming to equalise across colleges the interview load per place ratio.”

Reallocation of the first college happens too, and it is measured rather than rumoured. A college holding an unusually high number of shortlisted applicants per place must move some of them: “In December 2025, 25 shortlisted applicants were reallocated via this procedure, and 10 of those applicants were subsequently offered places by the colleges to which they were reallocated.” Ten of twenty-five is not the behaviour of a consolation process. In the same cycle, “28.2% of offers made were either open offers or made by a college other than the first college considering the applicant”.

The practical consequence is worth holding on to in December: an interview at a college you did not apply to is not a downgrade, and it is where more than a quarter of the offers come from.

What if the joint degree does not come off?

Oxford publishes a route that most candidates do not know exists. Where a joint-honours applicant is strong in one subject but will not receive an offer for the joint degree, “tutors may consider offering them a place for a relevant single honours degree”. In the 2025–26 cycle, again run on the MAT, “16 applicants for joint honours degrees were offered places for single honours courses”. That figure covers every joint course in the department’s cohort, not Mathematics and Computer Science alone, so it is not a per-course rate.

Oxford’s course page carries the same idea as a three-year average from a different angle: alongside its headline statistics it records “Successful for a different course: 1%” and “Applicant intake for a different course: 6”. Six people a year, on average across 2023–25, arrive at Oxford through this course and matriculate on another one.

What that changes about December is narrow but real. A candidate who decides halfway through a weak computing interview that the application is finished, and withdraws their effort from the mathematics interview that follows, is closing a door Oxford has left open. Both interviews are scored, both are shared among the tutors, and a strong single subject is a published outcome rather than a consolation.

What you need working before December 2026

Every interview is online. Oxford’s course page states: “Shortlisted candidates will be invited to at least one online interview. Interviews are expected to take place in December and should take place where you feel able to perform at your best.” The department’s admissions summary describes the last round in the same terms: “All shortlisted applicants were invited for interview in mid-December. Almost all interviews took place remotely by video call, often using a shared virtual whiteboard.”

That shared whiteboard is the one preparation task on this page that can be finished in an afternoon, and it is the one most candidates leave until the week itself. Hertford College publishes what is expected: “For Computer Science interviews, the University recommends that you have access to a Miro whiteboard and a touchscreen device and stylus to write out scientific/mathematical notation in addition to the device you use to access Microsoft Teams.” If none of that is available, Hertford is explicit that it does not matter: “If you cannot use Miro for whatever reason, that is perfectly fine, you can just use a dark pen and white paper to display your working up to the camera when needed.”

Whichever you choose, choose it in November 2026 and work three or four problems on it while somebody watches, because writing mathematics legibly on a shared whiteboard under time pressure is a skill and it is not one you want to acquire in the first five minutes of an assessed interview.

The dates themselves are published per course, and Mathematics and Computer Science shares its row with Mathematics and with Computer Science and Philosophy. Most first and second college interviews fall on Monday 14, Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 December 2026, though some colleges may start in the week commencing Monday 7 December. If a further college wants to see you, Oxford will have told you by 2pm on Wednesday 16 December, and that interview will fall on the 16th or the 17th. Decisions are communicated to shortlisted candidates in January 2027.

Before any of that, the invitation itself: Oxford makes its shortlisting decisions in November 2026 and says every applicant receives a letter or email “usually between the middle of November and early December”. Your own TMUA result arrives separately and cannot be changed — UAT-UK does not accept appeals of test scores, sends the result to Oxford automatically, and permits only one sitting in an admissions cycle. Frequently Asked Questions

How many interviews will I have for Oxford Mathematics and Computer Science?

Most candidates have three. The Department of Computer Science records that “in December 2025 most applicants were interviewed twice by their first college and once or more by their second college”, and that joint-degree applicants are typically given separate interviews in the two subjects. Oxford will tell you by 2pm on Wednesday 16 December 2026 if a further college wants to see you, and that interview would fall on the 16th or 17th.

Why am I being interviewed by a college I did not apply to?

Because Oxford assigns it. The department states that every applicant is “randomly assigned a second college by an algorithm aiming to equalise across colleges the interview load per place ratio”, and that colleges with too many shortlisted applicants per place must reallocate some. In December 2025, 25 shortlisted applicants were reallocated and 10 of them were then offered places by the college they were moved to. In that cycle 28.2% of offers were open offers or came from a college other than the first one considering the applicant.

What are the odds once Oxford shortlists me?

Can my TMUA score still change before the interview?

No. UAT-UK states that “we do not accept appeals of test scores”, that results are sent to institutions on your UCAS application automatically shortly after your test date, and that “you can only sit once within an admissions cycle”. Oxford requires the October 2026 sitting from almost all applicants. There is also no pass mark: the Mathematical Institute says the score is read alongside your UCAS application and information about school background.
