The TMUA for 2027 entry is sat on 12–16 October 2026. Oxford makes its shortlisting decisions in November 2026 and interviews Mathematics candidates on Monday 14, Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 December 2026, online, with some colleges starting the week of Monday 7 December. Each interview lasts about 25 minutes. Across 2023–25 Oxford interviewed 32% of Mathematics applicants and 9% were successful, for an intake of 183.

Oxford’s Mathematical Institute, on its TMUA page: “We can’t interview all our applicants in the time available, so we shortlist around three applicants per place to interview. To help us decide who to shortlist, we will use scores on the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) which all applicants for Maths, Computer Science, or joint honours courses must take.” It adds, in the same paragraph, that “there is no ‘pass’ mark for the TMUA”, and that the score is read alongside the UCAS application and information about school background.
By November the score is fixed. UAT-UK, which runs the test, states: “The scoring process is rigorously tested, and quality assured at every stage before, during and after each testing window. For this reason, we do not accept appeals of test scores.” Nor is there a second attempt available to an Oxford candidate. There are two sittings in the cycle, October 2026 and January 2027, but Oxford requires the October one, and UAT-UK states that “you can only sit once within an admissions cycle”. The score travels to Oxford on its own: “Your results will be sent to any participating institutions included in your UCAS application. This happens automatically shortly after your test date.”
The reported figure is a single overall score for the two papers combined, on a scale running from 1 at the low end to 9 at the high end and recorded to one decimal place. UAT-UK also warns candidates against reading their own performance as a verdict: “Candidates should not expect to score as highly on these tests as they have in their school exams.”
One caution about the date you will hear. UAT-UK publishes two different intervals on its own site: its results page says results are released “approximately four weeks after the test sitting”, and its TMUA page says “approximately six weeks after your test sitting”. Rather than choose between them, work to Oxford’s published dates, which are firm: shortlisting decisions in November 2026, and a letter or email either way “usually between the middle of November and early December”.

The Mathematical Institute publishes the format precisely, and it is shorter and more concentrated than most candidates expect. “Interviews occur in December. The precise format of the interviews varies from college to college, but candidates will generally have one or two interviews in their first choice college, and at least one other interview at another college. Interviews are online via video call for all candidates.”
So the minimum is two interviews at two colleges, and it may be three. The department continues: “Each interview lasts for about 25 minutes, and is largely mathematical in nature.” Twenty-five minutes is roughly the length of one A-level question worked slowly, which is the point: nobody is trying to cover a syllabus.
What the tutors are recording is not the answer. The Department of Computer Science, which runs the shared admissions process for Mathematics joint courses, publishes the mechanism in its own admissions summary: “The applicant’s performance in each interview is judged according to the admissions criteria, codified on a numeric scale against agreed descriptors, and shared among all tutors involved in admissions, together with the applicants’ UCAS forms and their test results.” A second number is produced in December, and it is produced from your working.
Oxford’s course page states what that number is measuring: “Tutors are looking for an applicant’s potential to succeed on the course… Ultimately, we are most interested in an applicant’s potential to think imaginatively, deeply and in a structured manner about the patterns of mathematics.”
This is the most useful sentence Oxford publishes about this interview, and it is rarely quoted in full. The department writes: “We may ask you to tell us about an area of mathematics you have studied; we may look in detail at a point of technique, or curve sketching; we may ask you to solve a problem and talk us through your thought processes; we may give you a mathematical definition and ask you to work out some of its consequences. We are trying to see how you think when you do Mathematics.”
That is five distinct activities, and each one rehearses differently.
Tell us about an area of mathematics you have studied. Pick one topic you have gone beyond the syllabus on and be able to say, in two minutes, what the central idea is and what question it answers. The failure here is breadth: a candidate who names six topics and cannot go one layer down on any of them has given the tutor nothing to follow up.
Look in detail at a point of technique. Expect to be stopped mid-line and asked why a step is allowed. Rehearse by working a routine integral or a proof and, at every line, saying out loud which rule you just used and what would break if its conditions failed.
Curve sketching. Oxford names this on its own, separately from technique, which is a signal about how often it comes up. A sketch is a reasoning task: intercepts, sign, asymptotes, turning points, behaviour for large and small values, and only then the picture. Narrate the order you work in, because the order is the assessment.
Solve a problem and talk us through your thought processes. The one skill that does not develop from silent practice. The department is blunt about why it matters: “Although we are good mathematicians, we are not mind-readers - if you don’t say anything, we can’t tell what you’re thinking!” It suggests arranging a practice interview with a teacher, and, failing that, explaining concepts to people who are not mathematicians.
Take a definition and work out its consequences. The most unfamiliar of the five, because school mathematics rarely hands you a definition and asks what follows. Rehearse it deliberately: invent a definition, then generate examples that satisfy it, examples that nearly do, and one consequence that must hold.

Because of what the test is and what it is not. The Mathematical Institute sets out the format: “The test lasts 2½ hours in total. It is divided into two papers. Candidates have 75 minutes for each paper. Each paper contains 20 multiple-choice questions. No calculators are permitted for the test.” It also describes the intended scope: “The TMUA aims to test the depth of mathematical understanding of a student in the fourth term of their A-levels (or equivalent) rather than a breadth of knowledge. It is set with the aim of being approachable by all students, including those without Further Mathematics A-level, and those from other educational systems.”
Two consequences follow, and they are the reason this page exists. First, nothing in the test records your working. A guess and a complete argument produce the same mark, so the score cannot distinguish between a candidate who saw the structure and one who eliminated three options. Second, the content is deliberately bounded so that it is reachable without Further Mathematics — which means the test is not the instrument that finds the ceiling of a strong mathematician.
The interview is the instrument for both. It is unseen, it is scored from the working, and the hint the tutor offers when you stall is part of the assessment rather than a rescue. That is why the department can say, without contradiction, that it wants no special preparation and that it wants you talking: “We very much don’t want applicants to feel they need special training for our admissions. The main thing is that you do mathematics, lots of it, and that you find it interesting. We advise you to do lots of problems, on and near your syllabus, so that you really understand the mathematics you are learning.”
Taken together those two sentences are a specification, not a platitude. Problems on and near the syllabus, worked until you understand rather than until you finish, and worked out loud. That is the whole of it, and it is why drilling multiple-choice speed through November is training the wrong thing.

The additional-interview row is the one to diarise. Oxford publishes 2pm on Wednesday 16 December 2026 as the time by which you will have been told, and any additional interview falls on the 16th or the 17th. Until that hour passes you are not finished, whatever your first two interviews felt like.
Every interview is online. Oxford’s Mathematics course page says: “Shortlisted candidates will be invited to at least one online interview. Interviews are expected to take place in December and should take place where you feel able to perform at your best.” The Mathematical Institute puts it without qualification: “Interviews are online via video call for all candidates.” Decide in November how you will show working on camera, and practise on that set-up rather than meeting it for the first time in December. For the record, Oxford Mathematics is offered as an MMath or a BA over 3 or 4 years, the UCAS code is G100, and the entry requirement is A*A*A with the A*s in Maths and Further Maths if available.
