Oxbridge Medicine Interview Dubai: Two Different Decembers

Oxford interviews every shortlisted Medicine candidate online, by two colleges, on Monday 14 or Tuesday 15 December 2026: the first two days of the winter break KHDA sets for every private school in Dubai. Cambridge’s main period is 7 to 18 December 2026, and five of its Colleges see a UAE-based Medicine applicant in person. Cambridge is blunt about the choice: “You cannot apply to Cambridge and Oxford in the same year.”

So the application a Dubai family sends by 15 October also chooses a December. This page covers Medicine only: the dates against the Dubai school calendar, the Colleges that mean a flight, and the two rules that decide which pool you compete in, or whether you can apply at all. When are Oxford and Cambridge Medicine interviews for a Dubai applicant?

Oxford publishes Medicine as a pair of named days. Its interview timetable row reads: “Each shortlisted candidate will be interviewed by two colleges, with the interviews being either on Monday 14 or on Tuesday 15 December.” The row does not say whether both interviews fall on the same day, so hold both. Oxford also warns that “Candidates may be asked to attend interviews outside of the timeframes given in this timetable”, so read the two days as where the interviews are expected, not as a promise.

Cambridge gives one window for every subject, 7 December to 18 December 2026, and leaves the format to the College. KHDA, the regulator for private schools in Dubai, lists 14 December 2026 as the “Start of winter break – All schools”, and classes resume on 4 January 2027. Because 14 December is a Monday, the week of 7 December is the last school week before the break.

For Oxford, then, the risk is not a clash with school. It is the family flight booked for the first weekend of the holiday. An online interview can be sat from anywhere, but Oxford states that “The extensive logistics involved mean it is not possible to rearrange the time of interviews”, so a candidate in transit or jet-lagged on 14 or 15 December has no published way to move it. For Cambridge the risk runs the other way: an in-person College can put the flight to England inside the last week of term.

What does Oxford’s Medicine interview look like from Dubai?

It is online, like every Oxford interview for 2027 entry: “Shortlisted applicants will be invited to online interviews in December 2026.” Oxford’s Medical Sciences Division explains how the two colleges are chosen: “where possible, one will be your college of choice (or allocation, if you made an open application), the second will be allocated to you randomly.” At each college you meet at least two academics, and the panel includes “at least one practising clinician”.

The interviewers do not have your admissions test result: “Interviewers will also not be aware of applicants' UCAT scores when interviewing.” The score returns only afterwards, when colleges rank the candidates they have seen and then review that ranking “After disclosure of the candidate rank from the second college and the UCAT score”. A strong or a weak UCAT therefore changes nothing about how you should talk in the room.

Oxford gives its times in UK time: “Where times are given in this timetable, they are given as UK time (GMT)”. The UK is on GMT all December and Dubai is on UTC+4 all year, with no daylight saving. On our arithmetic, an illustrative 09:00 to 17:00 UK interview day runs from 13:00 to 21:00 in Dubai. Oxford publishes no clock hours for Medicine, so treat that as the range to keep clear rather than as your slot; our page on interview time zones overseas sets the same arithmetic out for other countries.

The Medical School says it will tell you “as soon as possible in late November” whether you are shortlisted, and Oxford’s general guidance warns “you may only be given a week’s notice that you have been shortlisted.” Do not book travel for 14 or 15 December before that letter arrives. Oxford also asks candidates to agree with their school where the online interview will happen, and in Dubai that has to be settled before the break starts on 14 December. If the connection fails on the day, Oxford says “you will be offered another time.” The outcome letter is “scheduled to arrive on a specified date in early January”, around the time Dubai schools return on 4 January.

Which Cambridge Colleges fly a UAE Medicine applicant in, and when?

Cambridge publishes the interview format for every College for 2027 entry. For an applicant based in the UAE applying for Medicine, it comes down to five Colleges that interview in person: Churchill, Emmanuel, King’s and Selwyn, which are “All in person” for every subject, and Clare, which is online for most subjects but names Medicine as an exception: “For these courses all interviews will be in person: Medicine Music”. Pembroke and Trinity let an applicant based outside the UK choose online or in person. Every other College interviews a UAE-based applicant online.

One row is easy to misread. Jesus names Medicine among the courses it interviews in person, but that list is for UK-based applicants, and the same row ends “Applicants based outside the UK: online”. Guides written for a UK reader, including our own page on Cambridge Medicine after the UCAT, put Jesus beside Clare. From Dubai, only Clare’s exception applies.

Counting it out from Cambridge’s tables (our arithmetic, not Cambridge’s): Medicine is taught at 28 of the 29 Colleges, all except Hughes Hall. A UAE-based Medicine applicant is interviewed in person at 5 of them, chooses at 2 and is online at 21. Three Colleges admit only mature students, Hughes Hall, St Edmund’s and Wolfson, so for a school-leaver the figures are 5 in person, 2 by choice and 19 online, out of 26.

King’s is the most explicit about what will not excuse a flight. Among the reasons it lists as not sufficient for a remote interview is “Scheduling conflicts (including conflicts with school timetabling and/or exams)”, so missing the last week of term does not count. A King’s applicant who knows they cannot travel for an exceptional reason must say so on the King’s College Applicant Form, which is due by “5:00 pm UK time on 4th November 2026”, and King’s adds that “you will not be able to transfer your application to another college.”

Clare asks for warning the other way round: “If you have an unavoidable commitment in this timeframe, please let us know at least one month in advance.” It also asks applicants in a different time zone to say so in My Cambridge Application. Clare expects most applicants to have “2-3 interviews lasting 20-30 minutes”. A family holiday is unlikely to move any of this: Cambridge’s application guide lists holidays among the events it cannot, in most cases, schedule interviews around. A refused visa is different, since Cambridge says an alternative format may be offered “if you have a disability or your visa application is declined”, at the College’s discretion; whether you need a visa at all depends on your passport, which the UAE guide covers.

Two Colleges help with the trip itself. Churchill offers free overnight accommodation to interviewees travelling a significant distance, “typically those travelling for over 150 miles”, and Selwyn says “Students travelling from overseas may request up to two nights of accommodation.”

Oxford or Cambridge for Medicine from Dubai: how do the two Decembers differ?

Set side by side, the two routes ask different things of a family in Dubai. Neither is the easier one; they are simply different Decembers.

Oxford asks you to keep two holiday days clear and to sit at a screen between early afternoon and evening, Dubai time. Five Cambridge Colleges ask you to fly, possibly in term time, and the two that publish a notice period give about two weeks; the rest interview you online across a longer window. A family already planning to be in England over the break loses little by choosing an in-person College; a family staying in Dubai will find Oxford’s two days simpler to plan around.

How many Medicine places are there for international-fee students?

Oxford Medicine is the one Oxford course where the number of international-fee places is set from outside. Its Medical School says it “is required by the government to restrict the number of students who are classified as international students for fees purposes to a maximum of fourteen each year, across both the standard (A100) and Graduate Entry (A101) courses.” Shortlisting follows from that: “the number shortlisted for interview is restricted to approximately 32 for the standard A100 course.”

The last round shows the shape. For 2026 entry, “Upwards of 210” international-fee applicants submitted complete applications, and “32 of these applicants were shortlisted and 8 applicants received an offer”. The mean UCAT of those shortlisted was 2537.2, against 2377.5 for everyone Oxford shortlisted. Across all fee statuses Oxford interviews around 425 applicants and shortlisted about 41.4% of complete applications, and its course page gives an 11% success rate as a three-year average for 2023-25. We have not turned any of this into a figure for Dubai: Oxford publishes nothing by country for Medicine, and we will not compute one.

Cambridge publishes a plainer number on its Medicine course page: “Overseas fee status places: 22”, beside a 2025-cycle figure of 6 applications per place and 270 accepted. Its per-country table covers all subjects, not Medicine: in the 2025 cycle the UAE made 130 applications with a success rate of 6.2 per cent, which the UAE guide sets beside other countries. Is a British family living in Dubai “international” for Medicine?

Not necessarily, and not automatically home either. Oxford’s Medical School is direct: “Do be aware that citizenship does not in itself determine your status for fees purposes.” What it looks at instead is residence: “The issue is decided according to the facts of each case, having regard to where the student has been 'ordinarily resident' for the three year period to 31 August prior to commencing a course at a British University.”

That question carries more weight in Medicine than in any other Oxford subject, because fee status decides whether an applicant competes inside the limit of fourteen or outside it, and at Cambridge whether the 22 overseas fee status places are the relevant count. We do not classify any family here, since the rules turn on individual facts. Oxford’s instruction is the useful part: “Applicants should try to solve any uncertainty about their status before they submit their UCAS application”. For 2027 entry the UCAS deadline is 15 October 2026 at 6pm UK time.

Can a CBSE or Tawjihiyya student apply for Oxbridge Medicine from the UAE?

For an Indian-curriculum student the question is acceptance, and the two universities answer it differently. Cambridge lists the courses for which some Colleges accept CBSE Class XII, running from Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic to Veterinary Medicine. Medicine is not on that list. For a course that is not on it, Cambridge says you are “strongly recommended to undertake further study”, and its examples of suitable qualifications include A Levels, the IB, or “5 or more Advanced Placement (AP) Tests at Score 5” with A1 grades in relevant Class XII subjects. The detail is on Cambridge’s international entry requirements page, under India.

Oxford does accept CBSE Year XII. The grade line we could confirm is the one for courses requiring A*A*A, and Oxford Medicine asks A*AA, so check Oxford’s international qualifications page for the band that applies before relying on a grade. The cross-cut is worth writing down: on CBSE Class XII alone, Oxford Medicine is open to a Dubai student and Cambridge Medicine needs further study first.

For a Ministry of Education student, Oxford lists the UAE Tawjihiyya as “Not accepted”, and Cambridge says “Applicants with the Tawjihiyya alone will not be competitive and are unlikely to be successful.” The Ministry’s December exam weeks, which the UAE guide scopes in detail, therefore bind a cohort that cannot apply to Oxford Medicine on that certificate.

For a British-curriculum student, eligibility is rarely the issue. Cambridge accepts international A levels from Cambridge International, Oxford AQA or Pearson Edexcel “as they are comparable to UK AS and A levels”. Two Oxford Medicine rules are worth checking against a school timetable. It asks for “A*AA in three A-levels (excluding Critical Thinking and General Studies, and the international A-level in Thinking Skills) taken in the same academic year”, and it expects “a strong track record in Chemistry (compulsory), plus at least one from Biology, Physics and Mathematics.” The IB requirement is 39 points with 7, 6 and 6 at Higher Level. Cambridge asks A*A*A and says “Colleges usually require A* in Chemistry.” We have not compared international A-level Biology or Chemistry syllabuses with the UK ones, and we make no claim about gaps.

Both universities also set an age floor. Oxford requires applicants to be “18 years old by 1st November in the year they intend to start the course”, and Cambridge will not take an applicant who “will not be 18 years old on 1 November of year 1”, citing national restrictions.

Where does the UCAT fit for a UAE applicant now?

For 2027 entry the test is finished or nearly so. UCAT registration closed on 16 September 2026, the last test day is 24 September 2026, and results reach universities in early November. The test runs in Pearson centres in the UK and in 130+ countries; the UCAT booking page is the place to check centres for a future cycle, and our UCAT guide for Middle East students covers the test itself.

What the result does next depends on the university. Oxford builds its shortlist from a ranking, and its shortlisting guidance is worth reading word for word: “For applicants with GCSEs, we will give equal weight in the first stage of shortlisting to GCSEs and UCAT. For those without GCSEs, who took 5 or less GCSEs, or who took GCSEs between summer 2020 – summer 2021, we will give double weight to the UCAT.”

That guidance speaks of GCSEs and does not say how IGCSEs are counted. We have not found an answer on Oxford’s pages and will not guess one. If your child sat IGCSEs rather than GCSEs, ask Oxford’s Medical School how they enter the ranking before you draw a conclusion either way.

Cambridge is shorter: “We will use results as part of our selection for interview and may use them when making offers.” It adds: “There is no minimum threshold for UCAT score.” So at Oxford the interviewers never see the score, while at Cambridge the result can still count when offers are made.

How should a Dubai applicant prepare for the Medicine interview itself?

Much as anyone else does, with two adjustments for place and time. The adjustments are about the clock. For Oxford, rehearse between 13:00 and 21:00 Dubai time, on a holiday afternoon rather than after a school day, because that is when an Oxford interview on a UK working day would fall. For an in-person Cambridge College, rehearse for a morning in England after a flight, and arrive with a night in hand, which Churchill’s and Selwyn’s accommodation makes possible.

Cambridge’s own warning about paid preparation applies to us as much as anyone: “These services are not endorsed by the University. They do not have access to any exclusive information.” Nobody outside the Colleges has the real questions. • By 15 October 2026, 6pm UK time: choose Oxford or Cambridge; you cannot apply to both. Settle fee status first if it is in doubt.
• Choosing a Cambridge College: Churchill, Clare, Emmanuel, King’s and Selwyn mean a flight for Medicine; Pembroke and Trinity let you choose; Jesus is online for an applicant based in the UAE.
• By 5:00 pm UK time on 4 November 2026: a King’s applicant who cannot travel for an exceptional reason says so on the King’s College Applicant Form.
• At least a month ahead: tell Clare about any unavoidable commitment in the interview period.
• Early November: UCAT results reach universities.
• Late November: Oxford Medicine shortlisting. Do not book travel for 14 or 15 December before it.
• Before 14 December: agree the Oxford interview room with the school while term is still running.
• 7 to 18 December: Cambridge interviews; an in-person College can need you in England in the last school week.
• January: Oxford’s outcome letter in early January; Cambridge winter pool interviews mid to late January, in Dubai term time.
