Which of the three A-level English courses Bromley's sixth forms enter, how each school's grades compare with DfE's progress scores, and what each one asks of a student.
Book a Free ConsultationBromley's providers made 405 A-level English entries in 2024/25. In Literature, two schools made 40 of the 296 entries and hold 16 of the 22 A* grades DfE itemises, yet neither school's value-added score can be told from the national average. Grades and progress scores answer different questions, and of the five subjects this site covers for Bromley, English is where they part furthest. Bromley also enters Literature at England's rate but Language at about half of it.
Studying English at a Bromley sixth form and unsure which course, board or coursework task is yours? Our expert A-level English tutors help students across Bromley with whichever of the three courses their school enters, working from the student's own marked essays and the board their school names.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppThe two schools are Newstead Wood School and St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School. They made 40 of the borough's 296 Literature entries, with 38 of their 40 entries at A*–B against 47.7% at the other 15 providers. Their value-added intervals both contain zero: +0.32 on 26 matched entries at Newstead Wood and +0.19 on 14 at St Olave's. That describes who enrols, not how either school teaches. Both schools' own sixth-form documents ask for GCSE grade 7 in English, so their raw grades reflect the students who arrive, and value added exists to remove that.
English Literature is where the two measures part furthest in Bromley. Of the five A-level subjects this site covers for the borough, it has the widest gap in A*–B share between those two schools and every other provider (47.3 percentage points), and the smallest share of the borough's entries sitting at those two schools (13.5%, against 45.3% in Chemistry and 38.1% in Physics).
Bromley takes English differently from England in a second way. Its students enter Literature at the England rate, 11.3% of A-level students against 11.4%, but Language at less than half, 2.4% against 4.5%, and in each of the last five years at between 41% and 58% of England's rate. Four of the 22 providers with English entries enter Language, and three enter the combined Language and Literature course.
Below: which sixth forms enter which course, how English participation compares with England's over five years, grades and progress scores side by side, what DfE hides, what each school asks at GCSE and which board it names, and what the coursework involves.
Bromley is its own local authority, DfE code 305, so the borough and DfE's sweep are the same thing; GIAS, the government's register of schools, lists every provider below as local authority Bromley (305). Of 27 Bromley establishments in DfE's 2024/25 value-added dataset, 24 have an English Literature row and 22 of those have Literature entries in DfE's exam-entry table. Baston House School, Darul Uloom London School and Kings London (closed 27 March 2026) have no Literature row; Bishop Challoner School (closed 4 July 2025) and The Tutorial Foundation have a row but appear in neither of DfE's school-level tables of entries and of A-level students.

Each count is one student sitting one A-level once, and taking two English courses is rare in Bromley. DfE's separate count of state-funded students shows 376 who took any English A-level in 2024/25 and 273 who took Literature, 58 Language and 52 the combined course, so only 7 sat two (1.9%; England 3.0%). Literature and Language classes are largely different students.
Two Bromley schools run their sixth form inside a federation centre. GIAS links Harris Academy Beckenham and Harris Girls Academy Bromley to Harris Federation Post 16 (URN 135416), which it places in Croydon, and each school's record links back. The centre's own Literature row is 80 matched entries. Its five members with published rows sum to 67 (Beckenham 21, Girls Bromley 10, South Norwood 12, Crystal Palace 11, Girls' Academy East Dulwich 13), which leaves 13, and four more members have suppressed rows. The centre is the sum of its members, not extra students, so this page counts the two Bromley schools' own rows and leaves the Croydon centre out.

For Language, no: 2.4% against 4.5%, and in every one of the five years Bromley's rate has been between 41% and 58% of England's. The combined course sits between, 2.2% against 2.5%.

These are students, not the exam entries counted above, which also include four independent providers: the 2024/25 Literature figure here is 273 students against 296 entries, and the two are not subtracted from one another.
The Language gap is a provider gap. Four of the 22 providers enter Language: Bullers Wood School (28), Langley Park School for Boys (13), Chislehurst School for Girls (12) and Orion Coopers (5). Three enter the combined course: Hayes School (22), Langley Park School for Girls (20) and Ravens Wood School (9). Across England 904 of the 2,424 providers with any English entry (37%) enter Language and 492 (20%) the combined course; in Bromley the shares are 18% and 14%. Whether a Bromley student can take English Language depends on the school. Charles Darwin School's 2026 booklet lists Language, though DfE has no Language row for it in 2024/25.
Grades say where students finished. Value added compares that with students nationally who had the same GCSE results, so a school that recruits strong GCSE results is expected to post strong grades and is scored on whether it did better or worse than expected. The table gives DfE's grade counts for the 17 Bromley providers whose Literature grades it itemises, the same 17 that have a published Literature value-added score.

For scale, across the 1,765 providers in England whose Literature grade counts DfE itemises (32,917 entries), 10.3% of entries were A* and 57.1% were A*–B; Bromley's 17 itemised providers had 7.9% and 54.5%. The split sits in two rows. Newstead Wood School made 26 entries: 11 A*, 5 A, 8 B and 2 C. St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School made 14: 5 A*, 7 A and 2 B. Together that is 16 of the 22 A* grades, 38 of the 152 A*–B grades, and 40 of the 279 entries (14.3%). The other 15 providers made 239 entries, 114 of them A*–B (47.7%) and 6 A*.
That comparison is raw: it is not adjusted for GCSE results, both schools' sixth-form documents ask for grade 7 in English, and GIAS records both as state-funded schools with a selective admissions policy. Their value-added scores are adjusted, and read +0.32 (-0.03 to 0.68) at Newstead Wood and +0.19 (-0.30 to 0.67) at St Olave's. Both intervals contain zero, so DfE's own measure cannot tell either school's English progress from the national average.

A wide gap is what two groups of students who start from very different places produce. It is not evidence that one group was taught better, or worse. What it does tell a Bromley family is where the English classes are: 13.5% of the borough's Literature entries are at those two schools, so a typical Bromley English Literature student is at one of the other providers, where about half of entries reach A*–B.
DfE publishes a 2024/25 English value-added score for 17 Bromley providers in Literature, 3 in Language and 3 in the combined course, and suppresses 7, 2 and 0. Three of the 23 published intervals lie wholly on one side of zero: Harris Girls Academy Bromley in Literature (+0.64 on 10 matched entries), Langley Park School for Girls in Language and Literature (+0.47 on 20) and Langley Park School for Boys in Language (-0.88 on 13). The other 20 contain zero, among them Charles Darwin School's Literature interval, whose lower edge is 0.00 and which we do not count as clear. If every school were exactly average, about one interval in twenty would still clear zero by chance, about one of these 23, so none of the three is a safe statement about teaching on its own. DfE's score is a progress measure for one year's entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.

Bishop Challoner School and The Tutorial Foundation appear in neither entry table. Suppression removes rows, not students: 29% of the rows are hidden but 5.7% of the entries. Eltham College's own sixth-form options booklet publishes its 2025 English results as 25% A*, 25% A*–A and 100% A*–B, which fits its four entries with one A* and three B.

Grade 5 is the lowest bar named, at three providers, and the highest is Eltham College's 9/8/7 in both English GCSEs. Newstead Wood School and St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School ask for a 7, as does Langley Park School for Girls for its Literature course but not for its combined course. Of the 22 providers with Literature entries, 14 name a Literature board in the documents we read: Edexcel 8, AQA 2, OCR 2, Eduqas 1 and WJEC 1 (the school's own wording). Edexcel covers 126 of the 223 Literature entries at those providers, and five of its eight providers name A Streetcar Named Desire in their Literature course description: Newstead Wood School, Hayes School, Darrick Wood School, Ravens Wood School and Langley Park School for Girls. Boards differ even inside one school: Langley Park School for Girls teaches Literature on Edexcel and Language and Literature on OCR, and Bullers Wood School teaches Literature on Edexcel and Language on AQA.

A first session establishes which of the three courses the student is taking, the board and specification their school enters, the set texts and the coursework task. A tutor then works from the student's own marked essays, because English marks are usually lost in a small number of habits: an argument that is not sustained across a paragraph, quotation without analysis, or an unseen-text response that retells rather than reads. Sessions go through timed essays and unseen practice on the student's own board, with coursework drafts read and discussed, and parents receive notes after each session.

Sources: A level and other 16 to 18 results, 2024/25 (DfE), read through the Explore Education Statistics public API on 17 October 2026; Get Information About Schools (local authority, status, school type, admissions policy, links between establishments), read the same day; and each school's own published documents.
DfE's 2024/25 exam-entry table shows 405 A-level English entries at 22 Bromley providers: 296 in Literature, 58 in Language and 51 in Language and Literature. At state-funded providers DfE counts 376 students who took any of the three. Entries are not students: only 7 of those students sat two of the courses.
Literature is entered at all 22 providers with English entries. Language is entered at four (Bullers Wood School, Langley Park School for Boys, Chislehurst School for Girls and Orion Coopers) and the combined Language and Literature course at three (Hayes School, Langley Park School for Girls and Ravens Wood School). Ask the sixth form which course and board your child is on.
No. DfE publishes 23 English value-added scores across the three courses and three have intervals wholly on one side of zero: Harris Girls Academy Bromley in Literature (+0.64 on 10 entries), Langley Park School for Girls in Language and Literature (+0.47 on 20) and Langley Park School for Boys in Language (-0.88 on 13). The other 20 contain zero, so they cannot be told apart from the national average.
Grades record where students finished; value added compares them with students nationally who had the same GCSE results. At Newstead Wood School and St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School, 38 of 40 Literature entries were A*–B, and their value-added scores are +0.32 and +0.19 with intervals that contain zero. Both schools ask for GCSE grade 7 in English at sixth-form entry, so strong grades are what a strong intake would be expected to produce. The two numbers answer different questions, and neither is a verdict on teaching.
It varies, so check the school's own document. Of the fourteen providers whose documents we read, three ask for grade 5, seven for grade 6 in some combination, and three for grade 7 (Newstead Wood School, St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School and, for Literature, Langley Park School for Girls); Eltham College asks for 9/8/7 in both English GCSEs.
Fourteen of the 22 providers with Literature entries name a board in the documents we read: Edexcel 8, AQA 2, OCR 2, Eduqas 1 and WJEC 1. Edexcel covers 126 of the 223 Literature entries at those providers.
DfE suppresses a score or a grade count when the group is too small to publish. Seven of Bromley's 24 Literature value-added rows (29%) are suppressed, but DfE's entry table shows they hold 17 of the 296 Literature entries (5.7%). Two of the seven, Bishop Challoner School and The Tutorial Foundation, appear in neither entry table.
