Leading Tuition's expert GCSE Biology tutors in Bromley teach one-to-one online and start from each pupil's own school. DfE's provisional summer 2026 figures count 921 entries for the separate GCSE (9-1) Biology at the 15 Bromley schools with 30 or more, from 2,983 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4, with 899 entries at grade 4 or above and 536 at grade 7 or above.

Bromley here means the London borough, DfE's local authority 305. DfE lists 24 Bromley schools with Biology rows; this page reads the 15 with 30 or more entries and names the other nine below. Combined Science is a different qualification, in its own rows, and is not counted. DfE publishes no Progress 8 for this cohort, so every figure is a count.

Our expert GCSE Biology tutors help pupils across Bromley prepare for the separate GCSE, building each programme around the pupil's own school, latest mock paper and target grade.

Which Bromley schools enter pupils for separate Biology, and how many?

Separate Biology is a subset of each school's Key Stage 4 cohort, so the useful reading is entries beside pupils. The table lists the 15 schools in order of Biology entries, with the pupils DfE records at the end of Key Stage 4 and the admissions policy that Get Information about Schools (GIAS) records for each school.

The two schools GIAS lists as selective enter almost every pupil: Newstead Wood School has 167 Biology entries from 168 pupils and St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School has 128 from 128. Together they account for 295 of the 921 entries, 32%, and 296 of the 2,983 pupils.

The thirteen schools GIAS lists as non-selective account for 626 entries from 2,687 pupils, 23%. Among them the share runs from 16% to 34%. The largest single count among the thirteen is Darrick Wood School, with 78 entries from 262 pupils.

What this changes in our programme: the pupil's own mock paper, not a class pace, sets the first session. We ask for the school's topic list and the latest marked paper before planning anything. The counts tell us how many pupils at the school sit this qualification; they do not tell us what any one pupil needs, and we draw no such conclusion from them.

Grade by grade: how the 921 entries fall at each school

DfE publishes entries at each grade from 1 to 9, and the table below shows grades 9 to 4 in full and the three grades under 4 as one column. A column headed X appears because one entry at The Ravensbourne School carries that code in DfE's file, which is why the grades in that row add to 32 and its total is 33. All counts are provisional: DfE published them on 15 October 2026 and labels the release provisional.

Across the 15 schools the entries at each grade are 204 at grade 9, 171 at grade 8, 161 at grade 7, 183 at grade 6, 122 at grade 5 and 58 at grade 4, with 21 under grade 4 and 1 coded X. Grade 4 or above is 899 of 921 entries (98%) and grade 7 or above is 536 (58%). Grade 4 and grade 7 are the two thresholds our plans are written against.

The spread inside a single school is wide enough that a school's total tells a family little about its own child. Darrick Wood School has 78 entries, with 15 at grade 9, 17 at grade 8 and 14 at grade 7. Hayes School has 63 entries, with 9 at grade 9, 17 at grade 8 and 11 at grade 7. Harris Girls Academy Bromley has 60 entries, with 12 at grade 9, 9 at grade 8 and 12 at grade 7. In each case the entries at grades 4, 5 and 6 are counted in the table, and our sessions are built for the grades a pupil is actually working at, not for the school's average.

What this changes in our programme: we plan each pupil against two numbers, the grade the latest mock paper points to and the grade the family wants. The counts above show the grades that pupils at the same school ended on in summer 2026, which is context for the target conversation, not a prediction for any one child.

Our grades 4 to 6 band at the thirteen non-selective schools

The grades 4 to 6 band is our planning frame, not a DfE category. We use it because it holds the entries between a grade 4 and a grade 7. Across the thirteen non-selective schools it holds 318 of the 626 entries, 51%, and grade 7 or above holds 286, 46%. The other 22 entries are under grade 4 or coded X.

At Bishop Justus CofE School, 43 of 60 entries are in the band; at Kemnal Technology College, 25 of 33; at The Ravensbourne School, 24 of 33; and at Langley Park School for Boys, 23 of 38. These are counts of where entries landed, and they say nothing about why. A pupil at any of the thirteen can be anywhere from grade 4 to grade 9 in a given year, which is why the plan is individual.

What this changes in our programme: for a pupil in or near this band, we spend the early sessions on marked papers rather than new content. The tutor goes through the latest mock question by question, sorts lost marks by topic and by question type, and plans the next sessions from that sort. AQA 8461 asks for multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response questions, and a pupil can lose marks in one type while being secure in another.

Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

Grade 9 entries: 136 of the 204 are at the two selective schools

GIAS lists Newstead Wood School and St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School as selective, and the other thirteen as non-selective. At Newstead Wood School, 60 of 167 entries are at grade 9 and 47 at grade 8. At St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School, 76 of 128 are at grade 9 and 25 at grade 8. Together that is 136 of the 204 grade 9 entries at the 15 schools, 67%, from 295 of the 921 entries.

The remaining 68 grade 9 entries sit across the thirteen non-selective schools: Bishop Justus CofE School 3, Bullers Wood School 4, Bullers Wood School for Boys 2, Chislehurst School for Girls 0, Darrick Wood School 15, Harris Girls Academy Bromley 12, Hayes School 9, Kemnal Technology College 0, Langley Park School for Boys 4, Langley Park School for Girls 9, Orion Coopers 2, Ravens Wood School 8, The Ravensbourne School 0. Grade 9 is therefore a live target at schools of every kind in the borough, and a pupil at a non-selective school who is aiming at 8 or 9 should not read the counts as a reason to lower the target.

What this changes in our programme: for a pupil aiming at grade 8 or 9, the sessions move from securing marks to extended answers, data handling and evaluation. AQA weights its third assessment objective at about 20% of the qualification, and the questions that carry it are the ones where a confident pupil still drops marks. We use past-paper questions of that type from the first session, not as a last-month add-on.

Entries below grade 4, and schools below the 30-entry cut

Of the 921 entries, 21 are under grade 4, at 7 of the 15 schools; the Under 4 column of the grade table above gives each school's count, and the other eight schools have none. A count this small, beside a school's total, is a fact about the summer 2026 cohort and not a statement about teaching.

Nine Bromley schools have Biology rows but fewer than 30 entries, and this page does not read them school by school. They are named below with the entries and pupils DfE records. A small count here says only how many pupils are entered for this qualification; Combined Science is held in separate rows, so a small Biology count is not a measure of how a school teaches science.

Glebe School (2 entries) and The Tutorial Foundation (4 entries) carry a total and no grade rows. That is a withheld breakdown, not a zero. DfE's data-set footnote states the rule in full: "Individual grade breakdowns are suppressed (not shown) where the total number of entries (per school/qualification/discount code/subject description) is 5 or fewer." The source is the DfE data set for 2025/26.

What do AQA 8461's two Biology papers ask, and how are sessions cut to them?

DfE's file does not say which exam board any school enters, and this page does not claim a board for any school; families should ask the school. AQA's published assessment overview for GCSE Biology 8461 is a useful frame because it sets out the paper structure in plain figures, and we use it to show what a Biology session is built around. Source: AQA GCSE Biology 8461 assessments.

AQA 8461 has two written papers. Paper 1 assesses topics 1 to 4: Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response; and Bioenergetics. Paper 2 assesses topics 5 to 7: Homeostasis and response; Inheritance, variation and evolution; and Ecology. Each paper is a written exam of 1 hour 45 minutes worth 100 marks and 50% of the GCSE, offered at Foundation and Higher Tier, with multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response questions.

The working for time per mark is 105 minutes × 60 seconds ÷ 100 marks = 63 seconds a mark. That figure is the average, and it is why a pupil who spends four minutes on a two-mark question loses time later in the paper. Our sessions include timed sections from early in the plan, so pacing is practised before the mock and not discovered in it.

AQA gives approximate weightings for the assessment objectives across the qualification: about 40% for AO1, about 40% for AO2 and about 20% for AO3. It also states that questions drawing on the required practical activities count for at least 15% of the overall marks, and that a minimum of eight experiments is required for single science qualifications. Those figures shape our plan: knowledge sessions for the first two objectives, and separate practice on the method, data and evaluation questions the practical-based marks reward.

What this changes in our programme: we split the plan by paper. A pupil starts with the paper whose topics lose more marks on the latest mock, then alternates, so Paper 1 and Paper 2 each get a full revision cycle before the exams. We follow the school's board and tier once the family tells us which they are; we do not assume one.

How does one-to-one online GCSE Biology tuition work for a Bromley pupil?

Sessions are one-to-one and online, so a pupil anywhere in the borough joins from home with a screen and the school's papers. Our expert GCSE Biology tutors begin with a free consultation in which we ask for the school, the exam board and tier if the family knows them, the latest mock paper and the grade the family is aiming at. The plan that follows is written from those four things, and it changes as each marked paper comes back.

91% of our students achieve their desired grades. That is a statement about all of our students and not a promise for any one pupil; the school-level counts above are context, and the pupil's own papers decide the plan.

Data in this page comes from DfE's Subject school level exam data set, version 2.0, read for Bromley, GCSE (9-1) Full Course, Biology, on 2 November 2026, and from DfE's Key stage 4 performance 2025/26 release. Admissions policy is from the GIAS bulk file of 2 November 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bromley's summer 2026 GCSE Biology data final?

No. DfE published the figures on 15 October 2026 and labels the release provisional. This page reads data-set version 2.0 and counts 921 separate GCSE (9-1) Biology entries at the 15 Bromley schools with 30 or more, from 2,983 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4. DfE publishes no Progress 8 for this cohort, so the page uses counts of entries only.

Do these figures include Combined Science pupils?

No. DfE lists Biology and Combined Science as separate subjects, and this page reads only GCSE (9-1) Biology, full course. Newstead Wood School has 167 Biology entries from 168 pupils, and Hayes School has 63 from 245; pupils outside those entries may be in Combined Science rows that this page does not read.

How many Bromley pupils reached grade 7 or above in GCSE Biology?

At the 15 schools with 30 or more entries, 536 of 921 entries are at grade 7 or above, 58%. Of those, 204 are at grade 9 and 171 at grade 8. 136 of the grade 9 entries are at Newstead Wood School and St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School. These are provisional counts of entries, not of pupils, and DfE's release is dated 15 October 2026.

Which Bromley schools are left out of the school-by-school tables?

Nine schools have fewer than 30 Biology entries: Orion Eden Park (29), Charles Darwin School (27), Harris Academy Beckenham (26), Babington House School (19), Farringtons School (15), Harris Academy Orpington (13), Browns School (9), The Tutorial Foundation (4), Glebe School (2). Glebe School and The Tutorial Foundation have no published grade breakdown because DfE suppresses it at 5 or fewer entries. A small count is not a measure of how a school teaches science.

How long are the AQA GCSE Biology papers, and how many seconds is each mark?

AQA 8461 has two papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, and each worth 50% of the GCSE. The working is 105 minutes × 60 seconds ÷ 100 marks = 63 seconds a mark. DfE's file does not say which board a school enters, so check the school before assuming 8461.

Do you teach GCSE Biology in person in Bromley?

Our sessions are one-to-one and online, so a pupil in Bromley joins from home. The plan starts from the pupil's latest mock paper and target grade, then follows the school's board and tier. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and the consultation that opens the plan is free.

What grade should a Bromley pupil target in Biology?

The family sets the target, and the latest mock paper shows how far it is. In summer 2026, 899 of 921 entries at the 15 schools were at grade 4 or above and 536 at grade 7 or above. Our band of grades 4 to 6 holds 318 of the 626 entries at the thirteen non-selective schools.
