Croydon's A-level Biology table in the Department for Education's (DfE) 2024/25 value-added data lists 24 providers registered in local authority 306, and its largest row is not a Croydon school. Harris Federation Post 16 publishes 146 of the 483 published entries: nine Harris academies added together, 72 entries from four Croydon academies that also have their own rows and 74 from academies in Bromley, Southwark and Merton.

Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Croydon, whichever board their sixth form teaches, AQA, OCR or Edexcel's Salters-Nuffield course, building each programme from that school's own past papers and the student's current working grade.

Is the biggest row in Croydon's Biology table a Croydon school?

Not in the way a parent would mean it. Harris Federation Post 16 is registered at Norfolk House on Wellesley Road in Croydon, and the Get Information about Schools register (GIAS) types it as a sixth form centre for ages 16 to 19. The same register links it to ten Harris academies, each with the link type Sixth Form Centre School. Harris Sixth Form, the group's own site, describes its Single Centre sixth forms as bringing together ten campuses under one centre number, and says applications to them go through a single application process.

DfE's file gives each linked academy its own row as well as the centre's. Nine of the ten have a 2024/25 Biology row. The tenth, Harris Academy Beulah Hill in Croydon, has none: GIAS records it as opened on 1 September 2023 and linked to the centre on 1 September 2024. The table below adds the nine up, ordered by number of entries.

Source: DfE institution-level A-level subject value-added data set, 2024/25, subject Biology, each academy's row read under its own local authority; local authority of each academy from GIAS.

The addition, so it can be redone: the four academies in Croydon have 23 + 20 + 15 + 14 = 72 entries. The other five have 21 + 11 in Bromley, 15 + 6 in Southwark and 21 in Merton, which is 32 + 21 + 21 = 74. And 72 + 74 = 146, exactly what the centre publishes.

The centre's row therefore does two things at once. It repeats 72 entries that Croydon's table already carries in four academy rows of their own, so those students sit in two rows. It also brings in 74 entries from students at academies in three other boroughs, who are in Croydon's table without being at a Croydon school. Take the centre's row out and the table holds 483 - 146 = 337 entries from students at providers registered in Croydon. Thirteen of those are Old Palace of John Whitgift School's, which has closed, so 324 are at open providers. The centre's 146 is 30.2% of the table's entries.

That changes what 'Croydon' means in this data. In DfE's file each provider sits under the local authority that GIAS records for it, so local authority 306 selects providers registered in Croydon, one of which is a centre whose students are registered at academies in four boroughs. It is a rule about registration, not about where a student lives or where a building stands: a school across the border in Sutton stays out of the table, while two Bromley academies are in it, through the centre.

DfE's technical guidance says each student is allocated to one school or college, normally the one where they are on roll in the spring school census. The edition we could locate is the September 2026 guidance for the 2025 to 2026 measures, not the 2024/25 edition, and it does not mention sixth form centres or say where a centre's students live. The reading above, that the centre's row is its academies' rows added together, is ours, and it rests on the arithmetic in the table.

How many of Croydon's 24 providers can a family still apply to?

Start from the 24 rows. Three providers have closed, so 24 - 3 = 21 are open. One open provider, Croydon College, has its Biology score suppressed, which leaves 20 with a published score, and one of those 20 is the Harris centre. Set the centre aside and 19 school and college rows remain, with 324 entries between them. The centre itself is a route rather than a place: Harris says its Single Centre sixth forms share one application process, and that applications for September 2027 entry open in October 2026.

GIAS records all three closures with dates: Cambridge Tutors College closed on 30 June 2025, Old Palace of John Whitgift School on 31 July 2025, and The Cedars School on 1 September 2025 (an amalgamation or merger, in GIAS's words). Old Palace's 13 Biology entries were its last A-level cohort, because the John Whitgift Foundation says it deferred the closure by two years so that students taking public exams in 2025 could complete them there. Cambridge Tutors College and The Cedars are two of the three suppressed rows, so neither has a Biology score.

Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students at Croydon's open sixth forms, from the Harris campuses to the independent schools, working from the papers the student's own department sets rather than a generic revision list.

Which exam board and GCSE grade do Croydon's sixth forms publish for A-level Biology?

Boards and entry grades are set school by school, and only three of the 21 open providers, Archbishop Tenison's, Royal Russell School and Oasis Academy Shirley Park, put both a board and a Biology grade on pages we could find. We read each open provider's own website and the prospectus documents it links to on 29 September 2026, between 4 and 45 pages and documents per school, and record only what a page says. 'Not found' means we did not find it on the pages we read, not that the school lacks it. The table lists every provider where we found a board, a Biology-relevant GCSE grade or a statement that Biology is offered, in alphabetical order.

Eight providers name a board. Two name OCR (Riddlesdown Collegiate and Royal Russell School), four name AQA (Coombe Wood School, Oasis Academy Shirley Park, Shirley High School Performing Arts College and The Quest Academy) and two name Edexcel's Biology A, the Salters-Nuffield course (Archbishop Tenison's and Woodcote High School). For the other 13 of the 21 open providers we did not find a board on the pages we read. We found neither a board nor a Biology grade on pages of their own for Trinity School, Croydon High School, Norbury High School for Girls or Croydon College. Harris City Academy Crystal Palace has no board on the pages we read either; as a Single Centre campus, its grade is the one in Harris Sixth Form's 2026-27 document.

Where a Biology grade is stated it is 6 or 7. Grade 6 is the bar at Coloma Convent Girls' School, Archbishop Tenison's, Harris Academy South Norwood and in Harris Sixth Form's 2026-27 document for its Single Centre campuses. Grade 7 is the bar at Royal Russell School and Oasis Academy Shirley Park. The Harris Invictus brochure says 7, but it was created on 12 May 2025 for 2025-26 entry, and Harris Sixth Form's document for 2026-27 says 6, so a family should ask the campus which applies to their year of entry.

Two providers say something useful to a student who is not already on their roll. Archbishop Tenison's Sixth Form Course Guide 2026 says there would be at least 50 places available to Year 12 students from other schools in September 2026; the figure and the grade for September 2027 entry are worth confirming with the school. Croydon Metropolitan College, an independent college, lists Biology among its A-level subjects and says it supports tailored one-year retake pathways as well as two-year courses.

What each board's papers contain is on our AQA, Edexcel and OCR A-level Biology pages, and the comparison between them is on our A-level Biology page. This page only records which Croydon school says it teaches which.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Biology finally clicked

My daughter was struggling to see how the different topics in A-level Biology connected to each other before her mocks. A few sessions focused on exam technique and past papers made a real difference to her confidence.

What can a cohort of 14 entries show?

Value added compares a group of students' A-level grades with the grades achieved nationally by students who started from similar GCSE results. A score of zero is the national average, and DfE counts a score as different from average only when its 95% confidence interval sits wholly on one side of zero. Across the 21 published Croydon rows the median cohort is 14 entries: sorted from largest to smallest, the eleventh is 14, and twelve of the 21 have 15 entries or fewer.

Cohort size sets how wide the interval is. DfE's technical guidance says the size of an interval is largely determined by the number of students and that fewer students give wider intervals; the edition we could locate is the September 2026 guidance describing the 2025 to 2026 measures, with a worked example of an interval half a grade either side of a score. Croydon's own rows show the pattern closely: on all 21, an interval's width multiplied by the square root of its entries lies between 4.11 and 4.22. The row with 146 entries has an interval 0.34 wide, the row with 14 entries 1.11 wide and the rows with 6 entries 1.71 wide. At 14 entries a score has to sit more than about 0.56 of a grade from zero before DfE's rule counts it.

The table gives all 21 published rows and the three suppressed ones. It is sorted by number of entries, largest first, never by score, and it is not a ranking. Each figure is DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, given with its 95% confidence interval and its Number of entries (the field's own label), and none of them is a measure of teaching quality.

Sorted by number of entries (largest first), not by score. Value added is DfE's progress measure for 2024/25 entrants, not a measure of teaching quality. 'c' means DfE suppressed the figure. Which intervals clear zero, and are they separate findings?

Six of the 21 published intervals sit wholly on one side of zero, five below and one above, as the table's fifth column shows. The other 15 include zero, so DfE's rule cannot tell those groups of students from the national average. Two of the six overlap. The Harris Invictus Academy Croydon row is 15 entries that are already inside the centre's 146, so the six rows describe five separate groups of students, not six.

Nor do the six say why. DfE's measure compares students with others who started from similar prior attainment, but it says nothing about teaching, about which subjects a school steers students towards, or about students who joined a sixth form from elsewhere.

The line at zero is also blunter than a table makes it look. Two intervals end exactly 0.01 from zero, one just inside it and one just outside. A hundredth of a grade decides which group is called a finding, so the table reads better as a spread of results carrying different amounts of doubt than as passes and fails. For those five groups of students, in one subject and one year, the result was distinguishable from the national average. That is all the data settles.

How does Leading Tuition tutor A-level Biology when Croydon's boards differ from school to school?

The schools that state a board split three ways, so the first job in any programme is to establish which papers the student will sit. A Riddlesdown or Royal Russell student works to OCR, a student at The Quest, Coombe Wood, Oasis Shirley Park or Shirley High to AQA, and an Archbishop Tenison's or Woodcote student to Edexcel's Salters-Nuffield course. Students at the other Croydon sixth forms should ask their department, because the board was not on the pages we read.

Our expert A-level Biology tutors then work from that board's past papers and mark schemes and from the student's current working grade, in one-to-one online lessons that use a shared whiteboard. Students weighing Biology against Mathematics at the same school can read the Mathematics picture on our A-level Maths tutors in Croydon page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Harris Federation Post 16 a Croydon sixth form?

Harris Federation Post 16 is registered in Croydon, at Norfolk House on Wellesley Road, but it is a sixth form centre rather than a single school. The Get Information about Schools register links it to ten Harris academies: five in Croydon, two in Bromley, two in Southwark and one in Merton. Its 146 A-level Biology entries in 2024/25 equal the nine academies with Biology rows added together, so a family should treat it as a route into Harris's Single Centre sixth forms, which share one application process, not as one site.

How many A-level Biology entries in Croydon's table belong to students at Croydon providers?

Of the 483 published entries in DfE's 2024/25 Croydon table, 146 sit on the Harris centre's row. That row repeats 72 entries already in four Croydon academy rows and adds 74 from academies in Bromley, Southwark and Merton. Removing it leaves 337 entries at providers registered in Croydon, of which 13 belong to Old Palace of John Whitgift School, which closed in 2025. That leaves 324 entries at open providers.

Which exam board do Croydon schools name for A-level Biology?

Eight open providers name a board on their own pages. Riddlesdown Collegiate and Royal Russell School name OCR. Coombe Wood School, Oasis Academy Shirley Park, Shirley High School Performing Arts College and The Quest Academy name AQA. Archbishop Tenison's and Woodcote High School name Edexcel's Biology A, the Salters-Nuffield course. We found no board on the pages we read for the other 13 open providers, so a family there should ask the school directly.

What GCSE grade do Croydon sixth forms ask for in Biology?

Where a grade is published it is 6 or 7. Coloma Convent Girls' School asks for grade 6 in Biology, or 7-6 in Combined Science with a 5 in Maths. Archbishop Tenison's applies grade 6 to the sciences rigidly. Royal Russell School asks for 7 in Biology and Oasis Academy Shirley Park for sciences at grade 7. Harris Sixth Form's 2026-27 document sets grade 6 for its Single Centre campuses, while an older Harris Invictus brochure for 2025-26 said 7.

Can a student from another school join Archbishop Tenison's sixth form for A-level Biology?

Archbishop Tenison's Sixth Form Course Guide 2026 says there would be at least 50 places available to Year 12 students from other schools in September 2026, in addition to places for its own students. The guide asks for at least a grade 6 in the subjects a student chooses, applied rigidly to the sciences, and names Edexcel as the Biology examining body. Families should confirm the number of places and the grade for September 2027 entry with the school.

Is Old Palace of John Whitgift School still open?

No. GIAS records Old Palace of John Whitgift School as closed on 31 July 2025. The John Whitgift Foundation says it announced the closure in September 2023 and deferred it by two years so that students taking public exams in 2025 could complete them there, which makes the school's 13 A-level Biology entries in the 2024/25 data its last A-level cohort.

Why are so many Croydon Biology score intervals so wide?

Interval width follows cohort size. The median published Croydon row has 14 entries, and twelve of the 21 have 15 or fewer. On all 21 rows an interval's width multiplied by the square root of its entries lies between 4.11 and 4.22, so a row with 6 entries has an interval 1.71 wide and a row with 146 entries one 0.34 wide. DfE's technical guidance, in its September 2026 edition for the 2025 to 2026 measures, says fewer students give wider intervals.

Does Croydon Metropolitan College offer A-level Biology?

Croydon Metropolitan College, an independent college in South Croydon, lists Biology among its A-level subjects and says it supports tailored one-year retake pathways alongside two-year routes. It had 6 entries in DfE's 2024/25 Croydon Biology data. We did not find its exam board or a Biology entry grade on the four pages of its site that we read, so ask its admissions team for both.
