Croydon's 2024/25 DfE A-level Chemistry table, its sixth form centre row unpicked, and what each school's own documents say.
Book a Free ConsultationCroydon's A-level Chemistry table in the Department for Education's 2024/25 value-added data lists 24 providers registered in local authority 306, and its largest row is not a school. Harris Federation Post 16 publishes 123 of the table's 420 entries. Subtract the eight linked academies that publish Chemistry rows of their own and five entries are left over — the cohort DfE suppresses at Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich.
Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students across Croydon with the written papers and the practical work their department reports, working from the specification their own sixth form teaches. The borough splits between AQA and OCR, so establishing which papers a student will sit is the first job in any programme.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppCroydon is its own local authority for this dataset, code 306, so the sweep is the borough and no neighbouring area is folded in. Filtering the dataset's location list on that code returns 27 establishments registered in Croydon. Twenty-four of them carry an A-level Chemistry row for 2024/25.
The three without one are worth naming, because absence from a table is easy to misread. BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology appears in the very same dataset for A-level Mathematics, where it records a value-added score of −1.25 from 16 entries, and it has a suppressed Physics row. It has no Chemistry row and no Biology row. Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form and Thomas More Catholic School return no row in any of those four subjects. What that establishes is narrow and worth stating precisely: these providers are not missing from the data, and for BRIT School the gap is specific to the subject.
Membership of the table is decided by the local authority the Get Information about Schools register records for a provider, not by where a student lives or where a building stands. That matters more here than in most boroughs, because one of Croydon's 24 rows belongs to a sixth form centre whose linked academies are registered across four local authorities. A school a short walk away in Sutton stays out of Croydon's table; two academies in Bromley are inside it, through that centre.
Three of the 24 providers have closed since the 2024/25 cohort sat its exams, each confirmed against its own GIAS record. Cambridge Tutors College closed on 30 June 2025 and Old Palace of John Whitgift School on 31 July 2025, both recorded as "Closure". The Cedars School closed on 1 September 2025, recorded as "Result of Amalgamation/Merger". Their 2024/25 figures remain a true record of what that year's students achieved, but none is a sixth form a family can now apply to. That leaves 21 open providers in the table.
Harris Federation Post 16 is registered at Norfolk House on Wellesley Road and holds the biggest Chemistry row in the borough: 123 entries, a value-added score of −0.24 and a 95% confidence interval running from −0.45 to −0.04. GIAS types it as a sixth form centre and links exactly ten establishments to it with the link type "Sixth Form Centre School". Eight of those ten publish an A-level Chemistry row of their own in the 2024/25 data.
| Linked academy | Registered in | A-level Chemistry entries, 2024/25 |
|---|---|---|
| Harris Academy Merton | Merton | 22 |
| Harris City Academy Crystal Palace | Croydon | 21 |
| Harris Academy South Norwood | Croydon | 16 |
| Harris Academy Beckenham | Bromley | 15 |
| Harris Academy Purley | Croydon | 14 |
| Harris Invictus Academy Croydon | Croydon | 13 |
| Harris Girls' Academy East Dulwich | Southwark | 10 |
| Harris Girls Academy Bromley | Bromley | 7 |
| Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich | Southwark | suppressed ('c') |
| Harris Academy Beulah Hill | Croydon | no row in this dataset |
| Harris Federation Post 16 (the centre) | Croydon | 123 |
The ten establishments GIAS links to Harris Federation Post 16 as "Sixth Form Centre School", with each one's own A-level Chemistry entry count from DfE's 2024/25 institution-level subject value-added data set. Sorted by entries, not by score.
The addition, so it can be redone: 22 + 21 + 16 + 15 + 14 + 13 + 10 + 7 = 118. The centre publishes 123. Five entries are unaccounted for, and two of the ten linked academies could in principle hold them — the one whose row is suppressed and the one with no row at all. A shortfall split between two schools would name neither, so the arithmetic alone is not enough.
DfE's Compare School and College Performance service settles it. For Harris Academy Beulah Hill it returns no 16-to-18 subject data of any kind: "There is no data available for subjects and qualifications achieved by students at the end of 16 to 18 in this school or college." That academy was linked to the centre on 1 September 2024 and appears nowhere in the value-added dataset. It contributed nothing, and that is read from a published page rather than inferred from the gap.
One linked academy is therefore left, and Compare publishes its figure directly. Under "Subjects entered at 16 to 18", in a column headed "Number of exam entries", Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich records Chemistry, 5, GCE A level. That is the same number the subtraction leaves. Two DfE services, built on different counting rules, agree.
Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students at the Harris Single Centre campuses and across Croydon's other sixth forms, working from the board and past papers that campus actually uses rather than a federation-wide average.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppThe counting rules are genuinely different and the distinction is worth holding onto. The value-added dataset counts only students whose prior attainment could be matched, while Compare counts exam entries, and the two diverge at the centre itself: Compare gives it 127 A-level Chemistry entries against the 123 matched, and 152 Biology entries against 146. The subtraction above uses value-added figures throughout and never mixes the two measures.
What makes the result trustworthy is that the identical test in Biology comes out exactly even. The same ten links, read for A-level Biology in the same year, give nine published rows that sum to 146 — precisely the centre's own Biology total of 146, with nothing left over. That is the proof that a centre row is its linked academies added together rather than a separate cohort, and it is why the Chemistry shortfall can be read as a real missing member rather than an artefact.
The same school supplies the neatest illustration of where the publication line falls. Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich has six A-level Biology entries in 2024/25 and its Biology score is published, at −0.61. It has five in Chemistry and its Chemistry score is withheld. One school, one year, two sciences, either side of the line. Across Croydon's Chemistry table the smallest entry count DfE publishes anywhere is six, at three providers, which is consistent with where those two rows fall.
For a family reading the table, the practical consequence is the double count. Four of the linked academies — Crystal Palace, South Norwood, Purley and Invictus — are registered in Croydon and carry their own rows, so reading down the entries column and adding it up counts those 64 students twice. The centre also carries students at academies in Bromley, Southwark and Merton who appear in Croydon's table without attending a Croydon school. Set the centre's row aside and 297 of the table's 420 published entries sit at the other providers.
Croydon's A-level Chemistry and A-level Biology tables cover an identical set of 24 providers for 2024/25. Not one provider appears in a Chemistry row without a Biology row, or the reverse. That makes the difference in how much each subject publishes a clean comparison rather than an artefact of which schools are in which table.
Chemistry suppresses four of the 24 rows; Biology suppresses three. The extra one is Shirley High School Performing Arts College. Its Biology row is published, at six entries with a score of −1.09, while its Chemistry row is marked 'c' for the score, both interval bounds and the entry count alike.
It would be easy, and wrong, to read that as the school not teaching the subject. Shirley High's own sixth form course booklet for 2026 to 2028 lists Chemistry among its A-levels, heads the subject page "Chemistry A Level -OCR", sets an entry requirement of "6 in Maths and 6 in combined/separate science incl. Chemistry", and describes the practical endorsement as assessed for A level only. The course runs. What the suppression records is how many students were entered and matched in one year, which is a fact about cohort size and nothing else.
That is the useful thing for a parent whose sixth form shows no score. Of the 21 open providers in the Chemistry table, 19 have a published score and two do not: Croydon College and Shirley High. A blank is not a poor result, and it is not a verdict on the department. It means the published figure would rest on too few matched students for DfE to stand behind, and the questions worth asking the school instead are which specification it teaches, how many students are in the current Year 13 set, and how it reports the practical endorsement.

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
Value added compares a group of students' A-level grades against the grades achieved nationally by students who started from similar GCSE results. Zero is the national average, and DfE treats a score as distinguishable from average only when its 95% confidence interval sits wholly on one side of zero. The fuller definition, and what it does not measure, is set out on our Croydon A-level Maths page rather than repeated here.
Croydon's Chemistry cohorts are small. The median published row has 14 entries and 13 of the 20 have 15 or fewer, which is why most of the intervals below are wide enough to include zero. Across all 20 published rows the interval half-width multiplied by the square root of the entry count stays between 2.239 and 2.278, so cohort size alone predicts interval width closely: the row with 123 entries has an interval 0.41 of a grade wide, and the rows with six entries are about 1.83 wide.

All 24 rows in DfE's 2024/25 institution-level A-level Chemistry value-added data set for local authority 306, sorted by number of entries, largest first, never by score. This is not a ranking, and value added is a progress measure for one cohort in one year rather than a measure of teaching quality. 'Suppressed' is DfE's 'c'.
Five of the 20 published intervals sit wholly on one side of zero, and all five sit below it. No Croydon provider has a 2024/25 A-level Chemistry score that DfE's own rule can distinguish from average and call above it. That is a statement about this subject, this borough and this cohort, and it is not a statement about teaching: the measure already adjusts for where students started.
Two of those five overlap, which is easy to miss. Harris Invictus Academy Croydon's 13 entries are already inside Harris Federation Post 16's 123, so the five rows describe four separate groups of students rather than five. Reading the column as five independent findings counts one group twice, exactly as adding the entries column does.
The line at zero is also blunter than a table makes it look. Two of the five intervals stop at −0.04, a twenty-fifth of a grade from zero, and a slightly smaller cohort at either school would have widened the interval past the line and removed it from the list. The table reads more honestly as a spread of results carrying different amounts of doubt than as a set of passes and failures.
Comparing two Croydon sixth forms on figures like these? Our expert A-level Chemistry tutors help students build a strong Chemistry result wherever they study, working from that department's own specification and the grade their child is working at now.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppThe first job in any Croydon programme is establishing which papers the student will actually sit, because the borough is split and the split is not always visible from a school prospectus. Riddlesdown Collegiate states that its Key Stage 5 students study AQA Chemistry and OCR Biology, so a student taking both sciences there sits two awarding bodies at once. Coloma Convent Girls' School names AQA with specification code 7404/7405. Croydon High School states it follows the AQA specification, as does Oasis Academy Shirley Park. Archbishop Tenison's names OCR Chemistry A, and Norbury High School for Girls and Shirley High School Performing Arts College both name OCR. For the remaining open providers we found no Chemistry board on the pages we read, so that is a question for the department rather than an assumption to make. The full board and entry-grade picture for these same providers is set out on our Croydon A-level Biology page.
Entry grades are set school by school too, and Chemistry is not always asked for on the same terms as Biology. Coloma asks for grade 6 in Chemistry or 7-6 in Combined Science together with grade 6 in Maths, where the Biology row directly above it in the same table asks for grade 5 in Maths. Croydon High School asks for grade 8 in Chemistry GCSE and grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics, the highest Chemistry bar we found in the borough. Royal Russell School asks grade 7 for both sciences, so the Coloma gap is a feature of one school's table and not a borough-wide rule. A Year 11 student working towards any of these starts earlier, on GCSE Chemistry and on the maths that sits inside it, alongside our GCSE tuition in Croydon page.
From there a programme is built on the student's own working grade and their department's scheme of work. Lessons run one to one online with a shared whiteboard, working through that board's past papers and marking against the real mark scheme. Where a school reports the practical endorsement separately — Riddlesdown describes it as a separate certificate, and Archbishop Tenison's and Shirley High both name it for Chemistry — the written papers still carry the practical content, so we work through the required practicals as exam material rather than treating them as a side task. How the specifications differ paper by paper is covered on our A-level Chemistry page, and on the AQA and OCR pages for each board.
One practical caution about school documents, found while checking the providers above. Woodcote High School publishes three Chemistry documents that disagree with one another on both the board and the entry grade, and the current handbook that would settle it is published through a viewer we could not read. St Joseph's College states the first entry requirement on its Chemistry sheet in terms of GCSE Biology, and gives its exam board only as a logo image with no text. Where a school's own documents conflict, the department is the only reliable source, and it is worth asking before a student commits to a subject combination.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppHarris Federation Post 16 is registered in Croydon and holds the largest row in the borough's 2024/25 A-level Chemistry table, with 123 entries. It is a sixth form centre rather than a single school: the Get Information about Schools register links ten Harris academies to it with the link type Sixth Form Centre School, and those academies are registered across Croydon, Bromley, Southwark and Merton. Eight of the ten publish their own Chemistry rows in the same table. A family should read the row as a route into those campuses rather than as one site, and ask the individual campus about its own teaching.
Croydon's 20 published rows carry 420 A-level Chemistry entries between them. Harris Federation Post 16 accounts for 123 of those, which leaves 297 at the other providers. The centre's row is not additional to the table, though: four of its linked academies are registered in Croydon and already appear with rows of their own, so adding the entries column from top to bottom counts those students twice. The centre also brings in students at academies registered in Bromley, Southwark and Merton, who sit in Croydon's table without attending a Croydon school.
Four of the 24 rows in Croydon's 2024/25 Chemistry table are suppressed, shown as 'c' for the score, both interval bounds and the entry count. Two belong to providers that have since closed, Cambridge Tutors College and The Cedars School. The other two are open: Croydon College and Shirley High School Performing Arts College. Suppression reflects how many students were entered and matched, not the quality of the department or whether the course runs. Shirley High's own course booklet for 2026 to 2028 names OCR for A-level Chemistry and sets an entry requirement.
It is set school by school and the two sciences can differ inside one department. Riddlesdown Collegiate, which entered 36 students, states that its Key Stage 5 students study AQA Chemistry and OCR Biology. Coloma Convent Girls' School names AQA with specification code 7404/7405. Croydon High School and Oasis Academy Shirley Park also name AQA, while Archbishop Tenison's names OCR Chemistry A, and Norbury High School for Girls and Shirley High name OCR. For the remaining providers we found no board on the pages we read, so ask the department directly.
Several do, and at one school the bar is higher for Chemistry than for Biology. Coloma Convent Girls' School asks for grade 6 in Chemistry or 7-6 in Combined Science together with grade 6 in Maths, while the Biology row immediately above it in the same table asks for grade 5 in Maths. Croydon High School asks for grade 8 in Chemistry GCSE and grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics. Royal Russell School asks grade 7 for both sciences, so this is not a borough-wide rule and the grade should be checked per school.
Value added compares a group of students' A-level grades with the grades achieved nationally by students who began from similar GCSE results, so it measures progress from a starting point rather than the grades themselves. Zero is the national average. DfE counts a score as distinguishable from average only when its 95% confidence interval sits wholly on one side of zero. Five of Croydon's 20 published Chemistry rows meet that test and all five sit below zero. The full definition is on our Croydon A-level Maths page.
Interval width follows cohort size. The median published Croydon Chemistry row has 14 entries and 13 of the 20 have 15 or fewer, so most intervals are wide enough to include zero. Across all 20 published rows, the interval half-width multiplied by the square root of the entry count falls between 2.239 and 2.278. In practice that means the row with 123 entries has an interval about 0.41 of a grade wide, while a row with 6 entries is about 1.83 wide. A small cohort is not a weak department.
