What Harrow's seventeen sixth-form providers entered for A-level Biology in 2024/25, which figures separate from zero, and which specification each names.
Book a Free ConsultationHarrow is a London borough whose 2024/25 A-level Biology data covers seventeen sixth-form providers and sixteen value-added rows. One of those rows is not a school: Harrow Collegiate is an aggregate, and its 223 entries are the same entries already counted under the ten school sixth forms the Department for Education links to it. Count each entry once and the borough made 514, of which 220 were sat at St Dominic's Sixth Form College.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors help students across Harrow on the specification their own sixth form enters, rather than a generic scheme of work. Sessions start from the course the student is actually sitting.
Harrow is its own local authority in this dataset, code 310, so every sixth form inside the borough carries a row and nothing from Barnet, Brent or Hillingdon is folded in. That is the whole of what this page covers: the seventeen providers whose DfE reference number begins 310, named individually, with the figures each of them publishes.
Harrow Collegiate (URN 135469) is listed on the Department for Education's register of schools as a "Sixth form centres" establishment for ages 16 to 19, open since 1 September 2008. It teaches no one under its own name. Its Links tab lists exactly ten establishments tied to it, every one of them typed "Sixth Form Centre School".
Harrow Council names fourteen members of what it calls the Harrow Sixth Form Collegiate partnership, and tells applicants to contact the school or college directly. Fourteen is the council's membership list. Ten is what the DfE register links, and ten is the number the published figures reconcile to. The two lists are maintained by different bodies and a reader can check each against its own source.
Each of those ten schools carries its own A-level Biology row in the 2024/25 value-added file, and those same entries also sit inside the Collegiate's row. Whitmore High School describes the arrangement in its own words, saying the breadth of courses in its sixth form is significantly enhanced by its collaboration with local high schools and colleges as part of the Harrow Sixth Form Collegiate. DfE's technical guidance for the 16-19 measures sets out the allocation rule behind it: where a student studies in two colleges in one year, all of their results are attributed to a single college.
The addition is short enough to redo. The ten linked schools' own entry counts are set out below against the single figure the Collegiate publishes.

Three separate counts agree. The value-added entries sum to 223 against a published 223. The A-level entries Compare reports sum to 232 against a published 232. The AS entries sum to 145 against a published 145. A pooled figure that matches its components on one count could be coincidence; matching on three is the arrangement itself.
The practical consequence for anyone reading Harrow's Biology table straight down the page is that 223 entries are read twice, once under the Collegiate and once under the schools that made them.
Adding the fifteen published rows in the value-added file from top to bottom gives 737 entries. That total contains the Collegiate's 223 twice, once as the pooled row and once spread across the ten schools that made them. Counting each entry a single time gives 514 for the borough.
The same exercise on the Compare service, which counts entries rather than the value-added subset, gives 529. The two totals differ because the columns are not the same measure. The value-added file labels its column "Number of entries", and it is a subset of what Compare reports for the same provider and year: eight of the fourteen published single-institution rows carry the identical figure in both, and six are lower in the value-added file, by between one and four entries. The table below carries both columns so the difference is visible provider by provider rather than asserted.

Source: each provider's Compare school and college performance 16-to-18 subjects-entered page and the DfE qualification and subject value added dataset 019c2960, both 2024/25, retrieved 29 September 2026. Sorted by cohort size, measured as Compare A-level Biology entries, not by any score. Harrow Collegiate is not a row here: it is an aggregate of the ten schools shown in the previous table, and including it would count 223 entries a second time.
St Dominic's Sixth Form College accounts for 220 of the 514 entries, the largest single-institution row in the borough's value-added file. It is a sixth form college, and Harrow Council lists it among the providers with sixth form places that are not part of the Harrow Collegiate.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors work with students at Harrow sixth forms and colleges across both years of the course. Where a school enters an AS series at the end of Year 12, the first year is planned around that sitting.
Stanmore College is a further education college in its own right. Compare lists one A-level Biology entry for it in 2024/25, and its row in the value-added file is suppressed: the score, both interval bounds and the entry count are all published as "c".
North London Collegiate School carries no A-level Biology row at all. Compare lists Biology for the school only as International Baccalaureate Standard level and Higher level components, not as a GCE A level, which is why the borough has seventeen providers and sixteen Biology rows.
The AS column is worth a second look, because it is where two Harrow schools diverge sharply from the rest. Nower Hill High School states plainly that its students do not sit AS Level exams, and Compare lists no AS Biology row for it. Bentley Wood High School does the opposite: its key stage 5 Biology page says students sit two exams of 90 minutes each at the end of Year 12, and that this AS qualification will not count towards the final A-level grade. Compare records 57 AS Biology entries for Bentley Wood against 44 at A level. Whitmore High School also records 57 AS entries. For a Year 12 student, that is the difference between a summer of formal examinations and one without.
DfE publishes a 95% confidence interval alongside every value-added score. Its 16-19 accountability technical guidance defines that interval as the score plus or minus 1.96 standard errors of the score. A figure is a finding only when the whole interval lies on one side of zero. Where the interval spans zero, the honest reading is that the data cannot tell that provider apart from the national average for the subject, in either direction.
The fifteen single-institution rows are below, sorted by number of entries and not by score. Every row was checked to confirm the published interval brackets its own published score.
| Provider (URN) | Entries | A-level Biology value added 2024/25 | 95% confidence interval |

Source: DfE qualification and subject value added dataset 019c2960, A level cohort, GCE A level, subject Biology, 2024/25, retrieved 29 September 2026. Sorted by number of entries, never by score. Harrow Collegiate is deliberately absent: its row is an aggregate of the ten schools listed earlier and does not describe a separate cohort. North London Collegiate School has no row in this subject.
Three of the fifteen rows have an interval that lies wholly on one side of zero. They are given here in the table's own order, by cohort size, and the order carries no meaning beyond that.
Nower Hill High School's A-level Biology value added for 2024/25 is 0.35, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.02 to 0.67 from 41 entries. This is DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.
Pinner High School's A-level Biology value added for 2024/25 is -0.37, with a 95% confidence interval of -0.7 to -0.03 from 39 entries. This is DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.
Rooks Heath School's A-level Biology value added for 2024/25 is 0.8, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.14 to 1.46 from 10 entries. This is DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.
All three are among the ten schools the DfE register links to Harrow Collegiate. Two of the three lie above zero and one below.
The question in this section's heading has a clear answer in Harrow's numbers, and it is no. A larger cohort narrows the interval; it does not push the score to either side of zero. St Dominic's Sixth Form College sits on 220 entries, the largest single-institution row in the borough, and its interval is 0.28 wide, the narrowest of the fourteen rows that carry a published figure. Its value added for 2024/25 is -0.14, with a 95% confidence interval of -0.28 to 0 from those 220 entries, so the upper bound is published as exactly zero and the row does not separate. This is DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.
My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
My daughter had never found maths her strongest subject, but after finding Leading Tuition and starting one to one lessons, her confidence improved and she began coming away from lessons happy.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors teach the whole A-level course across Harrow, not a single weak topic. The teaching starts from a student's own marked work and the topics their department has already covered.
At the other end of the table the arithmetic of small cohorts is unforgiving. Thirteen of the fourteen rows with a published entry count rest on fewer than 50 entries, and the narrowest interval among those thirteen is 0.63 wide. An interval that wide is compatible with a great deal of performance either way, which is the reason a parent cannot read a single year's subject score at a small sixth form as a verdict on the department.
Harrow Collegiate's own row, the aggregate of those ten schools, is 0.1 with a 95% confidence interval of -0.04 to 0.24 from 223 entries. That interval spans zero, so the pooled figure separates from the average in neither direction. This is DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and is not a measure of teaching quality.
For a fuller account of how the measure is built and what it does and does not control for, the A-level Biology subject page and the borough's A-level Maths page for Harrow both work from the same DfE release in other subjects.
This is where a Year 11 decision actually turns, and the published bars are not the same across the borough. Five Harrow providers set out a Biology-specific requirement on their own pages. Each is given below as that provider states it, with the year the page applies to, because entry criteria are re-issued annually and a requirement read out of date is worse than none.
| Provider | Published A-level Biology entry requirement | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Nower Hill High School | Grade 6 or above in GCSE Biology and grade 5 or above in both GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics, or at least 8-7 in Combined Science | 2026/27 course outline |
| Pinner High School | A 6 in Biology and a 5 in Chemistry and Physics, or 7-7 in Combined Science | Courses on offer for 2026-27 |
| Park High School | Grade 6 in Biology and 6 in Chemistry or Physics, or 6-6 in Combined Science; 5 in English Language; 5 in Mathematics; at least six grades 9-4 overall | Undated course page |
| Bentley Wood High School | Sixth form entry table, Biology row: English 5, Maths 6, Science 6 6, with the subject column left blank | Undated entry-requirements table |
| St Dominic's Sixth Form College | English Language 5, Maths 6, Biology 7, Science 7,6 | Requirements for A Level courses, August 2027 |
Source: each provider's own published sixth form entry information, retrieved 29 September 2026.
The Combined Science route shows the spread plainly. A student holding 7-7 in Combined Science meets Pinner High School's published bar and clears Park High School's 6-6. The same grades fall below the 8-7 Nower Hill High School publishes. Three schools inside one borough, three different thresholds on the same qualification, and a student choosing between them on the strength of one set of GCSE results.
St Dominic's Sixth Form College asks for a 7 in Biology itself for August 2027 entry, alongside a 5 in English Language and a 6 in Maths, and a 7,6 where the science was taken as Combined Science. Bentley Wood High School's table leaves the subject column blank on the Biology row, setting English at 5, Maths at 6 and Science at 6 6.
For the remaining Harrow providers no Biology-specific grade requirement could be found on the provider's own pages. That is a statement about what was located on 29 September 2026, not a statement about what those providers ask. Entry criteria are often published only in a prospectus issued to Year 11 or handed out at an open evening, and the sixth form itself is the reliable source.
A-level Biology is not one course. The awarding bodies set different content, different practical arrangements and different paper structures, so a tutor who does not know which specification a student is entered for is guessing at half the syllabus. Three Harrow providers make the answer plain on their own pages.
St Dominic's Sixth Form College names OCR A as the exam board for its A-level Biology course. Nower Hill High School names the same specification and adds the detail: exams are 100% of the grade, there is a practical endorsement alongside, and the A level consists of three papers at the end of Year 13. Park High School names Edexcel, gives the specification code as 9BI0, and identifies the qualification as the Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Biology B.
Bentley Wood High School is a more interesting case, and it needs stating carefully. Its key stage 5 Biology page names no awarding body. It does list the eight units its students study: lifestyle, health and risk; genes and health; voice of the genome; and biodiversity and natural resources in Year 12, then on the wild side; immunity, infection and forensics; run for your life; and grey matter in Year 13. Those eight titles are, word for word, the eight topic titles of Pearson's Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Biology A (Salters-Nuffield), specification 9BN0. That identifies the course content a student will meet. It is not the school naming a board, and this page does not name one on the school's behalf.
The distinction matters in practice, because Pearson publishes two separate A-level Biology specifications. Park High School names 9BI0, Biology B. The unit titles Bentley Wood lists belong to 9BN0, Biology A. A student moving between those two courses is not moving between two arrangements of the same material.
For Hatch End High School, Canons High School, Rooks Heath School, Harrow High School, Whitefriars School, Whitmore High School, Harrow School and The John Lyon School, no awarding body could be found on the provider's own pages. Whitmore High School and The John Lyon School both list A-level Biology among their sixth form courses without naming a board. Again, that is what could be located rather than a claim about what those schools enter, and the department itself will answer the question in a sentence.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors support students across Harrow on OCR A, on either Pearson Edexcel specification, and on AQA and Eduqas. The first session establishes which specification the sixth form has entered.
Anything about how a given specification is structured belongs to the board pages rather than here: OCR A-level Biology, Edexcel A-level Biology, AQA A-level Biology and Eduqas A-level Biology each set out papers, content and assessment in full.
Everything above points at one practical problem. Inside a single London borough, a Harrow A-level Biology student may be sitting OCR A or one of two different Pearson specifications, may or may not face a formal AS series at the end of Year 12, and will have entered on a GCSE bar running from 6-6 to 8-7 in Combined Science depending on which sixth form accepted them. A programme built on the subject in general will miss most of that.
Our expert A-level Biology tutors teach across Harrow's sixth forms and colleges, and each programme starts from three things the student's own provider publishes: the specification, the assessment pattern, and the entry grades the department expected. From there the work is ordinary and specific. The topics the department has already taught. The practical endorsement record. Past-paper technique on the papers that student will actually sit, and the extended-response marking that separates grades at the top of this subject.
91% of our students achieve their desired grades. Tuition is one-to-one, in person across Harrow or online, and a free consultation is the way to begin: a conversation about the student, their sixth form and the specification.
No. Harrow Collegiate (URN 135469) is registered as a sixth form centre for ages 16 to 19, and the DfE register links exactly ten establishments to it. Its 2024/25 A-level Biology figures are an aggregate of those ten: 223 value-added entries against a sum of 223, 232 A-level entries on Compare against a sum of 232, and 145 AS entries against a sum of 145. Harrow Council separately names fourteen members of the partnership, which is the council's own membership list rather than the DfE register. A student applies to one of the schools, not to the Collegiate itself.
Counting each entry once, 514 in the DfE value-added file for 2024/25 and 529 on the Compare service, which counts a slightly wider set of entries. Reading the value-added table straight down instead gives 737, because Harrow Collegiate's 223 entries appear both in its own pooled row and in the rows of the ten schools that made them. St Dominic's Sixth Form College accounts for 220 of the 514. The rest are spread across thirteen school sixth forms, the largest of them on 44 entries.
Three of the fifteen single-institution rows for 2024/25. Nower Hill High School is 0.35, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.02 to 0.67 from 41 entries. Pinner High School is -0.37, with an interval of -0.7 to -0.03 from 39 entries. Rooks Heath School is 0.8, with an interval of 0.14 to 1.46 from 10 entries. These are DfE's value-added progress measure for 2024/25 entrants and are not measures of teaching quality. Every other row in the borough has an interval spanning zero, so the data cannot separate it from the subject average in either direction.
Because Compare lists Biology at North London Collegiate School (URN 102257) only as International Baccalaureate Standard level and Higher level components, not as a GCE A level, and the DfE value-added file scores GCE A level entries. The school was open on the DfE register when this page was researched on 29 September 2026 and appears among Harrow's seventeen providers in the dataset. It simply carries no row for this qualification in this subject, which is why the borough has seventeen providers and sixteen A-level Biology rows.
Stanmore College (URN 130440) is a further education college, and its A-level Biology row in the 2024/25 value-added file is suppressed: the score, both confidence interval bounds and the entry count are all published as the letter c. Its Compare page for the same year lists one A-level Biology entry. A suppressed row carries no published figure at all, so it can be read neither as a good result nor as a poor one, and it is the reason the borough has sixteen Biology rows but only fifteen published ones.
It depends entirely on the school. Nower Hill High School states that its students do not sit AS Level exams, and Compare lists no AS Biology row for it. Bentley Wood High School's key stage 5 Biology page says students sit two exams of 90 minutes each at the end of Year 12, and that this AS qualification will not count towards the final A-level grade. Compare records 57 AS Biology entries for Bentley Wood against 44 at A level. Whitmore High School also records 57, Hatch End High School 17 and Harrow High School 8.
The published bars differ inside one borough, and the Combined Science route shows the spread clearly. Park High School asks for 6-6 in Combined Science, or a 6 in Biology with a 6 in Chemistry or Physics. Pinner High School asks 7-7 in Combined Science for 2026-27. Nower Hill High School asks at least 8-7. St Dominic's Sixth Form College, for August 2027 entry, publishes English Language 5, Maths 6, Biology 7 and Science 7,6. Bentley Wood High School's entry table gives its Biology row as English 5, Maths 6 and Science 6 6.
Tell us which sixth form the student attends and which specification it enters, and our expert A-level Biology tutors will build the programme around that course rather than a generic one. Harrow students also work with us on A-level Maths and on GCSE subjects.
