The counts come from the Department for Education's school-level exam data for the 2025/26 academic year, which DfE published on 15 October 2026 under the title Key stage 4 performance. They cover separate GCSE (9-1) Biology only. Combined Science is a different qualification with its own rows and is not counted anywhere on this page. For the wider picture of GCSE support in the borough, the hub for tutoring in Harrow lists every subject we cover there.

Does your child sit separate Biology? Entries beside pupils at the end of KS4

The first question for a Harrow family is whether the child belongs to the group these counts describe. At every school below, the Biology entries are a subset of the cohort: DfE's "pupils at the end of KS4" figure gives the cohort, and the entries figure gives how many pupils were entered for the separate qualification. Entries as a share of pupils run from 16.7% to 47.8% across the ten schools.

Working for the last column, entries divided by pupils at the end of KS4:

These are counts of entries. Which pupils a school enters, and for which qualification, is the school's decision, so ask the school which one your child is working towards before relying on any grade count below. If the answer is Combined Science, this page's counts do not describe the child's exam, and our GCSE Biology tutoring page covers the separate qualification in general.

What are the grade 4, grade 7 and grade 9 counts at each Harrow school?

DfE publishes entries at each grade from 9 down to 1, plus U (ungraded) and X. The table adds grades 4 to 9 for the first count and grades 7 to 9 for the second. The percentages are shares of that school's Biology entries, not of all its pupils: a school that enters 35 pupils and one that enters 155 are both measured against their own entries.

Ten schools together656635 (96.8%)364 (55.5%)122117

Across the ten schools, 635 of 656 entries are at grade 4 or above (96.8%) and 364 are at grade 7 or above (55.5%). There are 122 entries at grade 9 and 117 at grade 8. Below, each school's own rows are set out with the working, in the order of the table.

Nower Hill High School has 155 separate Biology entries from 324 pupils at the end of KS4 (47.8%). DfE's rows: grade 4 = 2, grade 5 = 12, grade 6 = 32, grade 7 = 31, grade 8 = 41, grade 9 = 37. That makes 155 entries at grade 4 or above (100.0% of its entries) and 109 at grade 7 or above (31 + 41 + 37 = 109; 70.3%). Of the 155 entries, 109 are at grade 7 or above, so for a child here our plan spends most of its time on extended open-response answers and on holding marks across topics, with the 46 entries at grades 4 to 6 in mind for the topics that cost marks.

Bentley Wood High School has 86 separate Biology entries from 220 pupils at the end of KS4 (39.1%). DfE's rows: grade 4 = 1, grade 5 = 9, grade 6 = 27, grade 7 = 19, grade 8 = 17, grade 9 = 13. That makes 86 entries at grade 4 or above (100.0% of its entries) and 49 at grade 7 or above (19 + 17 + 13 = 49; 57.0%). The 86 entries split 37 at grades 4 to 6 and 49 at grade 7 or above, so a plan here carries both kinds of session: securing the middle-band topics and then moving the marks on questions that ask for an explained, joined-up answer.

Avanti House School has 67 separate Biology entries from 180 pupils at the end of KS4 (37.2%). DfE's rows: grade 4 = 2, grade 5 = 7, grade 6 = 22, grade 7 = 18, grade 8 = 11, grade 9 = 7. That makes 67 entries at grade 4 or above (100.0% of its entries) and 36 at grade 7 or above (18 + 11 + 7 = 36; 53.7%). The 67 entries split 31 at grades 4 to 6 and 36 at grade 7 or above; our plan for a child here is built around moving a secure 5 or 6 towards 7, with the paper-by-paper sequence set by the child's own mock marks.

Whitmore High School has 65 separate Biology entries from 251 pupils at the end of KS4 (25.9%). DfE's rows: grade 2 = 1, grade 4 = 6, grade 5 = 7, grade 6 = 13, grade 7 = 8, grade 8 = 10, grade 9 = 20. That makes 64 entries at grade 4 or above (98.5% of its entries) and 38 at grade 7 or above (8 + 10 + 20 = 38; 58.5%). Of the 65 entries, 38 are at grade 7 or above and 26 at grades 4 to 6, with 1 entry at grade 2, so a plan here can start from the child's mock marks rather than from a general assumption about the cohort.

Pinner High School has 57 separate Biology entries from 172 pupils at the end of KS4 (33.1%). DfE's rows: grade 5 = 1, grade 6 = 11, grade 7 = 14, grade 8 = 13, grade 9 = 18. That makes 57 entries at grade 4 or above (100.0% of its entries) and 45 at grade 7 or above (14 + 13 + 18 = 45; 78.9%). All 57 entries are at grade 5 or above, and 45 are at grade 7 or above, so for a child here the useful work is at the top of the mark range: precise use of terms and full-mark open-response answers, with 12 entries at grades 4 to 6 in the plan for the topics behind them.

Hatch End High School has 57 separate Biology entries from 203 pupils at the end of KS4 (28.1%). DfE's rows: grade 3 = 2, grade 4 = 6, grade 5 = 13, grade 6 = 16, grade 7 = 9, grade 8 = 9, grade 9 = 1, U = 1. That makes 54 entries at grade 4 or above (94.7% of its entries) and 19 at grade 7 or above (9 + 9 + 1 = 19; 33.3%). Of the 57 entries, 35 are at grades 4 to 6 and 19 at grade 7 or above, with 3 entries below grade 4 (2 at grade 3, 1 recorded as U), so the plan here is weighted towards the 4-to-6 band and the step from there to 7.

Canons High School has 49 separate Biology entries from 191 pupils at the end of KS4 (25.7%). DfE's rows: grade 1 = 1, grade 2 = 2, grade 3 = 10, grade 4 = 9, grade 5 = 10, grade 6 = 5, grade 7 = 7, grade 8 = 2, grade 9 = 2, X = 1. That makes 35 entries at grade 4 or above (71.4% of its entries) and 11 at grade 7 or above (7 + 2 + 2 = 11; 22.4%). Of the 49 entries, 35 are at grade 4 or above and 14 are below it: 13 at grades 1 to 3 (1 + 2 + 10) and 1 recorded as X. For a child here, our plan starts by securing grade 4 topic by topic, then builds towards the 11 entries at grade 7 or above.

Salvatorian Roman Catholic College has 43 separate Biology entries from 141 pupils at the end of KS4 (30.5%). DfE's rows: grade 4 = 7, grade 5 = 4, grade 6 = 14, grade 7 = 7, grade 8 = 2, grade 9 = 9. That makes 43 entries at grade 4 or above (100.0% of its entries) and 18 at grade 7 or above (7 + 2 + 9 = 18; 41.9%). All 43 entries are at grade 4 or above, with 25 at grades 4 to 6 and 18 at grade 7 or above, so the plan here moves a secure middle-band child up the marks on the papers, using the child's own mock results to choose the first topics.

Park High School has 42 separate Biology entries from 252 pupils at the end of KS4 (16.7%). DfE's rows: grade 5 = 5, grade 6 = 10, grade 7 = 10, grade 8 = 5, grade 9 = 12. That makes 42 entries at grade 4 or above (100.0% of its entries) and 27 at grade 7 or above (10 + 5 + 12 = 27; 64.3%). All 42 entries are at grade 5 or above, with 15 at grades 4 to 6 and 27 at grade 7 or above, so for a child here the plan leans to the upper marks, including the 12 entries at grade 9.

Rooks Heath School has 35 separate Biology entries from 204 pupils at the end of KS4 (17.2%). DfE's rows: grade 1 = 2, grade 2 = 1, grade 4 = 3, grade 5 = 5, grade 6 = 12, grade 7 = 2, grade 8 = 7, grade 9 = 3. That makes 32 entries at grade 4 or above (91.4% of its entries) and 12 at grade 7 or above (2 + 7 + 3 = 12; 34.3%). Of the 35 entries, 32 are at grade 4 or above and 3 are below it (2 at grade 1, 1 at grade 2); 20 are at grades 4 to 6 and 12 at grade 7 or above, so the plan here covers securing grade 4 and moving the 4-to-6 band upwards.

Which band does a Harrow child start in? Our planning frame

This frame is ours, not a DfE or AQA classification. We use it to decide where a Harrow child's first sessions go, and the counts in each band come from the table above. A child's own mock papers, not the school's total, decide which band they start in.

Band one: securing grade 4

Across the ten schools, 21 entries sit below grade 4 or are coded U or X, spread over four of the ten schools; each school's own rows are set out above. For a child working at this level the plan is topic-by-topic: find the topics that cost the most marks, rebuild them with short structured and closed questions, then test them under timed conditions.

Band two: grades 4 to 6 towards 7

Across the ten schools, 271 entries sit at grades 4, 5 and 6. Sessions here shift from recall to explanation, because open-response questions are where a secure 5 or 6 usually stops short of a 7.

Band three: grades 7 to 9

364 entries are at grade 7 or above, including 117 at grade 8 and 122 at grade 9. The work is the last marks on each paper: precise terminology, full-mark extended answers and questions that join topics. A student continuing to sixth form can read how we approach the next stage on our A-level Biology tutors in Harrow page.

How do the two AQA GCSE Biology 8461 papers divide the revision?

Boards differ by school, and this page makes no claim about which Harrow school sits which board. Where a child does sit AQA 8461, the board's specification at a glance sets the structure: a linear qualification in which all exams are sat at the end of the course.

AQA lists both papers at Foundation and Higher Tier, with multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response questions. Because each paper carries 100 marks, we split revision by paper and check each against the child's mock marks. A pupil whose Paper 2 marks are lower starts with Homeostasis and response, Inheritance, variation and evolution, and Ecology. If the school enters the child with another board, we plan the same way from that board's own papers.

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

What does GIAS record beside the entry rates: girls only, boys only, faith and mixed?

Get Information about Schools (GIAS), the DfE register of schools, records each school's type, gender and admissions policy. It is given here as context for the entry rates, not as an explanation of them. Bentley Wood High School is recorded as girls only, with 86 entries from 220 pupils (39.1%). Salvatorian Roman Catholic College is recorded as boys only and Roman Catholic, with 43 entries from 141 pupils (30.5%). Avanti House School is recorded with a Hindu religious character, with 67 entries from 180 pupils (37.2%).

The other eight schools are recorded as mixed and non-selective, and Avanti House School is the one of them with a religious character. Whitmore High School is a community school, Pinner High School and Avanti House School are free schools, and Nower Hill High School, Park High School, Rooks Heath School, Canons High School and Hatch End High School are academy converters. GIAS records The Sacred Heart Language College as girls only and Roman Catholic, and The John Lyon School as an independent school. For tutoring this tells us which kind of class a child is in, and we draw no conclusion about teaching, selection or why any entry rate differs.

Which four Harrow schools fall below the 30-entry cut?

DfE's Harrow rows hold 14 schools with a Biology total. Ten have 30 or more entries and are in the tables above. The other four are named here so that no Harrow school in the file is left out, with their entries and pupil numbers exactly as DfE lists them.

Whitefriars School has 26 entries from 148 pupils, The Sacred Heart Language College has 24 from 148, and Harrow High School has 23 from 169. Their grade rows are published, and we hold them below the cut because a count built on fewer than 30 entries moves a lot with every pupil. For The John Lyon School, DfE lists 1 entry against 123 pupils at the end of KS4 and withholds the grade breakdown. No grade count appears for it here, and we make no statement about its pupils.

How should a parent read provisional school counts?

DfE says the data in its Key stage 4 performance release is provisional and is based on results data supplied by awarding organisations. The release was published on 15 October 2026 and last updated on 28 October 2026, and we read the Harrow rows on 2 November 2026 from DfE's subject school level exam data (version 2.0). Counts can be revised, so treat them as a planning guide.

Three limits matter for a parent. First, the file counts entries, so the shares above are shares of entries. Second, DfE states that Progress 8 cannot be calculated for 2024/25 and 2025/26, which means there is no Progress 8 figure for these cohorts and this page uses none. Third, grade counts describe a cohort of entries, never one child or the teaching a school provides.

What we do with the counts is practical. On the first call we ask for the school, the exam board and the latest mock marks, then use the school's split to decide the weighting between securing grade 4, moving 4 to 6 towards 7, and protecting the top. If your child also sits maths or English, our pages for GCSE maths tutors in Harrow and GCSE English tutors in Harrow work the same way, and our GCSE tuition in Harrow page brings the subjects together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is separate GCSE Biology the same as Combined Science for a Harrow pupil?

No. DfE lists Biology and Combined Science as separate subject options, and the 656 entries on this page are separate GCSE (9-1) Biology only, from 2,138 pupils at the end of KS4 in the ten schools with 30 or more entries. Combined Science is a different qualification with its own rows, so a pupil sitting it is not described by these counts. Ask the school which qualification your child is entered for before using any figure here.

How many pupils at each Harrow school sit separate GCSE Biology?

DfE's provisional summer 2026 rows give Nower Hill High School 155 entries, Bentley Wood High School 86, Avanti House School 67, Whitmore High School 65, Pinner High School 57, Hatch End High School 57, Canons High School 49, Salvatorian Roman Catholic College 43, Park High School 42 and Rooks Heath School 35. Set against pupils at the end of KS4, that is 16.7% to 47.8% across the ten.

Are the Harrow GCSE Biology grades on this page final?

No. DfE states that the data in its Key stage 4 performance release is provisional, and the release was published on 15 October 2026 and last updated on 28 October 2026. We read the Harrow rows on 2 November 2026. Progress 8 cannot be calculated for 2024/25 and 2025/26, so this page uses none. Treat every count as provisional until DfE revises or confirms it.

Why are four Harrow schools missing from the main Biology table?

The table keeps schools with 30 or more entries. Whitefriars School (26 entries), The Sacred Heart Language College (24) and Harrow High School (23) fall below that cut, so only their entries and pupil numbers are named. DfE lists The John Lyon School with 1 entry against 123 pupils and withholds its grade breakdown, so no grade count is shown for it and we make no statement about its pupils.

What does AQA GCSE Biology 8461 examine, and does my child's school sit it?

AQA 8461 has two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, 50% of the GCSE: Paper 1 covers topics 1 to 4 (cell biology, organisation, infection and response, bioenergetics) and Paper 2 covers topics 5 to 7. This page does not say which Harrow schools sit AQA, and none is claimed. Ask the school for the board and tier, and we plan the papers around that.

How does a one-to-one online Biology tutor use my child's school counts?

We use them to choose where the plan starts. Across the ten schools, 21 entries sit below grade 4 or are coded U or X, 271 are at grades 4 to 6 and 364 are at grade 7 or above, and each school's own split decides the weighting. The first session then checks the child's own mock marks topic by topic, because a school total describes a cohort, never one pupil.

How do I start with a Harrow GCSE Biology tutor from Leading Tuition?

There are three steps. Book the free consultation through the form or WhatsApp, tell us the child's school, exam board and target grade, and then we set out a one-to-one online plan for the papers still to sit. Leading Tuition states that 91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and the consultation is where we explain how that applies to Biology for your child's school.
